UGA adds Charleston Southern, Georgia Southern to future football schedules

Georgia has added Charleston Southern to its home football schedule for 2014 and Georgia Southern for 2016, UGA associate athletic director Arthur Johnson said this morning.

The Nov. 22, 2014, game will be Georgia’s first ever against Charleston Southern, while the Nov. 19, 2016, game will continue the Bulldogs’ trend of playing Georgia Southern once every four years.

Georgia will pay Charleston Southern $450,000 and Georgia Southern $525,000 for making the trips to Athens.

Both schools are Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) members.  FCS teams command payouts considerably smaller than Football Bowl  Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) teams. The going rate for getting a FBS team to play in your stadium without demanding a return trip is close to $1 million.

Georgia typically plays one FCS opponent per season.

Charleston Southern played at Florida last season and lost to the Gators 62-3.  Georgia is 4-0 against Georgia Southern; the teams played in 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2008 and also are scheduled to play in 2012.

At the rate GSU and UGA are going, GSU will be running the score up on UGA next time they play each other.

Games like these are needed so players who have been arrested can serve their one game suspension. One is needed at the beginning of the season for the summer arrests, and one later in the season for the fall arrests. This is a brilliant move by McGarity, and an example of why he makes the big bucks.

Maybe McGarity should have checked with Michigan first. They could tell him how far back it sets a program if you slip up and lose to one of these “cupcakes”. Sadly, right now I wouldn’t bet a lot that this Dawgs team could beat GSU.

McGarity just screwed all the UGA season ticket holders.

Here’s how:

Ohio State just recently agreed to pay Colorado $1.2 Million
for a Home/Home series in a couple of years.

It probably costs upwards of $1 Million for UGA to schedule Oregon.
Thats money UGA has to pay Oregon for a Home/Home series.

It costs UGA a WHOLE LOT LESS to schedule a cupcake
like Charleston Southern.

So, while UGA season ticket prices STAY THE SAME, OR EVEN RISE,
the COST of the schedule opponent just went WAAAAAY DOWN.

Kind of like when you go to the grocery store and pay $4.00 for
a half-gallon of ice cream. Except the container is no longer a REAL half-gallon. Its about a 30% smaller carton.

So you end up paying the SAME PRICE as before, for LESS PRODUCT.

Thats what McGarity has just done to UGA because Charelston Southern
is definitely “less product.”.

So you see, McGarity has SCREWED the season ticket holders.

You see UGA fans…to the UGA Athletic Association….
you’re really just…CUSTOMERS…in a STRICTLY Business sense.

The UGA-AA really doesnt care about you.
They care about PROFIT MARGINS.
And hey, there’s nothing wrong with profit margins,
as long as you know thats ALL fans really mean to the UGA-AA.

Its this SAME reasoning that was why the UGA-AA was charging the $10,000 lifetime fee during the 2008 pre-season “hype-fest.”

And the hits just keep on coming !!

I will say this about D. Evans, he had the right idea about taking UGA nationally. It seems McGarrity plans to keep UGA relevant just in the SEC with scheduling weaker opponents. D. Evans had UGA playing OSU, ASU and Oregon, this would’ve open up recruiting for UGA on a National Level.

UGA will never be on the level of Alabam or Florida as long as MR is the head coach. In order to beat the best, you must first play them. It is sad that our CHAMPIONSHIP GAME every year is Florida.

Pathetic.

Keep thinking Georgia Southern is a Cupcake. Ole Miss thought FCS Jacksonville State was a cupcake. Virginia Tech thought FCS James Madison was a cupcake. Kansas thought FCS North Dakota State was a cupcake and they all got beat. This was in this year alone. Georgia Southern beat App State in the same year they beat Michigan. That same Michigan team went on to beat the Florida Gators in the Bowl that year. So yeah I want you to keep thinking Southern is a cupcake. Btw how’s 0-3 treating you?

I think we should toughen the schedule by dropping Georgia Tech and adding Georgia State.

Georgia State has a better class of people too.

Home and home with Oregon. How many season ticket holders going to Oregon? How much does it cost if they do? How many home games are left after the team goes to Oregon? All FCS games Georgia plays will be in Athens year in and year out.

404,

Why would UGA have to pay Oregon $1M for a home and home series? Each team has to travel one year, and each team gets the benefit of a marquee opponent on their non-conference schedule. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m just curious.

It takes these kind of games to servive in the SEC.You can’t play herculies ever saturday and expect to play for a championship. These games are like preseason games, even though they count in the schedule.it gets your timing down along with your head and body, and ready for the big boys on saturday afternoons.

hey folks, look on the bright side of this – your new AD is scheduling some games that your pups at least have a chance to win. After all at UGA, under CMR, the intent is to field a mediocre team. You know, a team good enough to win 9-10 games (most seasons), but not good enough to compete with the big boys for titles. Trust me when I say that playing a team like Oregon will help the name of UGA more than Charleston Southern will, but the big L that the Beavers hang on you will hurt more. UGA is nothing more than a pretty decent REGIONAL football team, and will remain so if your new AD has his say.
What brought Florida to the forefront was the boldness of Steve Spurrier, and it has continued under Meyer. Unfortunately for the pups they do not have a coach with the boldness, the charisma, the cutthroat mentality of a Spurrier.

Eating crap, and howling at the moon.

Every major team in the country does this. Look at MOST schedules and you’ll see three “cupcakes”. For those complaining about dropping Oregon…were you planning on attending? Were you planning on getting back to GA in the middle of the night and have to prepare for…?…as soon as you got back?

Granted, I’d rather see Clempsum (or Louisville, or Cincy etc) than Chas.Southern. But, right now they’ve decided with good reason not to schedule western time zone teams any longer. Just too much wear and tear on players, coaches, and fans. Plus, we don’t recruit Oregon (nor Oklahoma), so why play em other than the little bit of national exposure?

Go Dawgs!

@Delusional, even though UGA is 0-3, know one really cares or knows where Georgia Southern is unless you live south of Macon, GA :(

Plus from what I have heard everyone who goes to that school either went there because they didnt get excepted to UGA or Tech, and unless again you grew up south of Macon you never really supported that college. Most people in the Atlanta area or North think Georgia State University is the real GSU anyway.

One more point is that FCS or Div 2 Championships do not mean much either unfortunately :( said but true *sniff*…Maybe one day Georgia Southern will drop the kiddie ball option and then they can get promoted up to 1-A by 2030. Sadly that probably wont happen because the people in Statesboro wouldnt want that stadium to be circular and get rid of that green hill that people sit on.

At least UGA even though they suck this year, has prestige and is a nationally recognized team, I doubt you will see Georgia Southern on ESPN at the top of the hour or on Sports Illustrated Magazine.

People laughed when BAMA scheduled Georgia State. WELL………………………Georgia State took Jacksonville State to overtime before Jacksonville State won. Guess what………………………Jacksonville State beat OLE MISS.

This makes BAMA schedule even stronger. I guess this means UGA will not be scheduling Georgia State anytime soon.

A strong schedule plays a great deal in getting to the BCS Championship. That is why BOISE STATE will probably never get there with the creme puffs they play.

BAMA has 2012 and 2013 games in Atlanta against an ACC oponent that I hear will probably be MIAMI, NC, NCSTATE, OR FSU. Also games in Dallas with Michigan for two years.

UGA is just afraid to play the bigger schools because they know they will lose. SABAN is not afraid. So what if you lose, your schedule will look better than playing the creme puffs like UGA.

Best thing for UGA would have been to play OREGON and beat them. UGA will not win until CMR is gone and you start playing quality teams outside of the conference.

NEXT YEAR the MNC is a JOKE. Yes it make money and PUB, bu winning the SEC should mean more if your team does that. Sorry I hate Tech lost to UGA last year, but winning the ACC was more important to me. BAMA playing Ga State this year is nice for Bama to give some money to Curry, but I think my buddy that is a huge BAMA fan could probably play QB and I could be Middle Lindbacker in that game by the middle of the 2nd quarter. If you want to break the BSC then have HUGE OOC games as to make the BCS MNC be between a no loss App St vs a no loss Sayracuse. Make the bowl matchups a joke because the teams playing got to the game by playing nobodys. I know I would love to see a Haiwii v Bosie St for the MNC when you have Bama, UF, Texas, USC west, Ohio St and Oklahoma all having 2-3 losses and playing in crapy bowls, but they could all beat the teams playing in the BCS MNC game. THAT is the cure to killing the BCS.

to:5150 P.O.A.D; I agree I dislike the current system as well…Many UGA fans fill bitter because the 2 years UGA won the SEC they did not play in the MNC game. In fact since 2002 UGA and Auburn are the only 2 teams to win the SEC and not play in the MNC game..It happened to UGA twice, many people think winning SEC= Playing in the MNC game……

.To me here is UGA’s keys to success:
1. Beat UF and UT in the same year..on a regular basis
2. Recruit good players that have great character.
3. If Richt is not willing to do what it takes to win, hire somebody new
4. Demand better results not making excuses.

That is 570 Student Athletes. If “PAY UP” has their way that is $570,000 min. a month to $1,140,000 a month or $13,680,000/yr. HAHAHAHAHAHHA RIGHT UGA can afford that. As someone posted UGAA is like #2 in money rasing and there is no way in HELL UGA can pay PLAYERS. TITLE IX leveled the field. Pay ONE you pay them ALL. Let’s set the record straight. Georgia Southern is not a cupcake team in the FCS or the FBS, they are in a rebuilding program at the moment…kinda like UGA. Second, Georgia Southern does play UGA TOUGH when we play between the hedges…the difference in the game comes down to special teams and depth at key positions…you guys don’t exactly destroy Georgia Southern when you play them…scores like 27-7 back when Quincy Carter was QB, and 45-21 back when UGA was ranked #1(what a joke then and now) in the country doesn’t exactly seem like a complete domination by a ’superior’ team. Yeah you won the game…but a truly impressive FBS team like a Florida or Alabama squad wouldn’t have let a team with the personnel of GSU score that many points if any…and let’s not forget that at halftime the score is usually something like 10-7…so stop with the belittling of schools like Georgia Southern…everybody is beatable, just ask Michigan. And when UGA can win and win convincingly and effortlessly then maybe they can ‘toughen’ the schedule…until then why don’t ya’ll focus on trying to win this season…your team is pathetic 1-3…Georgia Southern is at least 3-1…So that being said GO EAGLES…GATA!!!! and WAR EAGLE!!!! SEE YOU PANSIES IN NOVEMBER…
