Georgia has added Charleston Southern to its home football schedule for 2014 and Georgia Southern for 2016, UGA associate athletic director Arthur Johnson said this morning.
The Nov. 22, 2014, game will be Georgia’s first ever against Charleston Southern, while the Nov. 19, 2016, game will continue the Bulldogs’ trend of playing Georgia Southern once every four years.
Georgia will pay Charleston Southern $450,000 and Georgia Southern $525,000 for making the trips to Athens.
Both schools are Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) members. FCS teams command payouts considerably smaller than Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) teams. The going rate for getting a FBS team to play in your stadium without demanding a return trip is close to $1 million.
Georgia typically plays one FCS opponent per season.
Charleston Southern played at Florida last season and lost to the Gators 62-3. Georgia is 4-0 against Georgia Southern; the teams played in 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2008 and also are scheduled to play in 2012.

I am disappointed that we haven’t struck a deal to play Georgia State yet. They are still trying to put together future schedules so they’ve got to be open. Drop Charleston Southern for Georgia State!

Can’t wait to spend $100-plus for the likes of Charleston Southern and Ga. Southern. Let me call the Hotel Indigo now and book my room before the place sells-out.
I had a hard time enough time giving away the Louisiana-Lafayette and Idaho State tickets.
Who gives a rat’s ass what Florida does with its schedule. They have the “extra” home game every year with the UGA/Fla game being in-state.
If McGarity wants to have the extra home game help the Athens economy why not make the Florida game rotate?…Gainesville, Athens, Jacksonville, Atlanta.
McGarity seems to be afraid of the Chick Fil A kickoff game.
Another idea would be to schedule Ga. State every year. The game in Atlanta would be essentially another home game.
I guess these ideas make too much sense.
Can’t wait to see what other powerhouses the new AD will be lining-up next. Louisiana-Monroe? Savannah State? Hey wait Kennesaw State will be starting a program soon.
I hear Coastal Carolina is looking for an opponent in ‘16…or was that Coast Guard?

Alabama: / Penn State , Michigan
Tennessee/ Oregon, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ohio State, NC State
LSU/ Oregon, Washington, TCU, Arizona State
Auburn/ Clemson, Kansas St
Arkansas/ Tex AM annually, Texas
Ole Miss/ Boise State, Fresno St, Texas
Again UGA plays GT EVERY YEAR, UF plays FSU EVERY YEAR, SC plays Clemson EVERY YEAR.
All of the schools listed above have their natural rival within the conference (except Arkansas who does play one of the Texas schools as that continues tradition from SWC days).
If you want UGA to play all of these different schools then we should drop GT. None of those schools play TWO BCS schools in the same year regularly, so quit touting them like they’re doing something special because they’re not!

playing CHARLESTON SOUTHERN IS a DISGRACE just like FL playing them. WHAT A JOKE. UGA is better off having Damon Evans back. What a gutless decision. The only reason Charleston Southern’s football program is Div I AA is because NCAA rules state the football and basketball program have to be in the same class otherwise the football team would have stayed in DIv III. Has anyone at all seen their football stadium? It is similar to junior high school. Yes that is right, junior high school. The power house high schools would not be seen at the place. What in the name of God are you recruiting 5 stars to play these schools? Are you so down on yourselves this is the best you can do? MAN UP fans and tell the clown(AD) that is ludicrous. WHAT A BUNCH OF COWARDS, but I guess that is the SEC way. Bama playing Ga State. GOD help all of you.

I don’t want to see UGA travel across the globe to get bent over if they’re having a bad year and fully agree with taking Oregon off the schedule. I can’t speak for Charleston Southern, but I’m an Athens native and Georgia Southern graduate, and you can always expect GSU to put up a great fight vs. larger schools (past ones being UGA and UNC) and this year, Navy (whom we nearly beat). I will continue to go to games no matter who they play because that’s what real fans do and I can’t wait for the GSU/UGA game in 2012. As for fans of other conferences, keep assuming the position when you play SEC schools and then you can laugh all the way back to the bus when it starts getting warmed up before halftime.

I can appreciate your frustration over your donations for seats and feeling like you are not getting a good value in scheduling an FCS opponent.
I cannot make a case for Charleston Southern, however, the Georgia Southern game I am sure will be a good experience. They play competitive football. Discussions with their alumni, etc will hopefully make it worth it.

Notice that Richt’s won/loss record is mostly against patsies just like these two. Whenever he plays a top 50 program during the football season he usually loses with one exception…GT. But I really could care less about those wins. Most were against their old coach Gailey and we all know Richt was the better coach. We can’t say that anymore. He is at best 3rd or 4th from the bottom in the SEC coaches and likely in the bottom two. Luckily our talent compensates on most weekends. Why can’t we go out and get a coach worthy of our talent? Bama did! Florida did! Shoot even Miss. St. did even though they’ll will never have the talent to compete in the SEC…they have the better coach!

Looks like Patsy Schedule lives again ! The old Vince Dooley method of scheduling is back. Did it ever leave ? If it did, it didn’t for long enough. This is a tried and true way of assuring W’s but it also will assure that people will lose interest in a program that doesn’t need to give their fans any more reasons to get their entertainment elsewhere. If you don’t think you can beat the better teams, petition to move the program to a lower level. Then you can play all the Charleston Southerns you want.

McGarity is clearly trying to implement the Florida model of “don’t play anyone competitive out of your conference except for your ACC rival” at UGA, and I honestly don’t care for it. Florida hasn’t left the state to play a regular season out of conference game in THREE DECADES, and that’s shameful. I don’t want to be like that, guaranteed wins or not.
Yeah, the SEC is hard, and you don’t wanna overload your schedule, but these big out of conference games (UGA/Azzie State, OK State, etc) are really fun and give the fans a chance to see different kinds of matchups that we normally wouldn’t see outside of bowl season. How many cupcake games do you expect us to go see? Heck, it seems like we barely sold out the LALA game this year, and that was our first game of the year. How’s that going to help ticket sales when we start with three straight cupcakes down the line?
Though, to be fair, I understand the GA Southern game. It’s becoming somewhat of a four-year tradition, and there are a lot of fans that like to see (and pay to see) that matchup. So that makes sense.
Back to the broad picture, though. I would also argue that big non-conference games are more valuable than cupcakes. “How so,” you ask? Well, if you win a cupcake, it’s a given. If you win a touch nonconference matchup, it’s an accomplishment and weighs heavily in your strength of schedule ranking. If you lose a tough matchup, you get a little slack from pollsters (unless you get blown out). If you lose to a cupcake, you’re embarrassed totally, and it’s impossible to come back in the rankings. Remember Appie State against Michigan? Jacksonville State against Ole Miss? James Madison against Virginia Tech?
And don’t say you can’t win if you schedule these big games. ‘Bama has done pretty dang well and they’ve played Penn State, Virginia Tech and Clemson the last three years. LSU played (a depleted, granted) North Carolina team to start this year, and they’re still undefeated, last time I checked, though they may not be for much longer (their offense is almost as bad as ours!).
Of course, if it were up to me, I’d make us play Clemson every year or at least every other year. I loved that matchup/rivalry.

Some Dawg fans just aren’t happy unless they’re complaining about SOMETHING!
I’m willing to bet the same folks criticizing McGarity are the very folks who were begging the administration to hire him in the first place.
Look the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting a different result. The “tough schedule” experiment failed, get over it. Tennessee HAS to schedule these games because they have a low talent pool in Tenn and have to recruit nationwide.
UGA simply needs to keep homegrown talent at home PERIOD! Much like UF.
Again, the man comes from a successful program and was born and raised in Athens so I know he cares about UGA, so until he proves otherwise I’ll trust his judgement. It’s not like the same philosophy hasn’t worked at UF.
No wonder our fans are a laughing stock. NEVER SATISFIED with anything anyone decides and have all the answers. Most here probably think they could tell Eskimos how to better build igloos!

Rumor has it that Richt and the new AD are pushing the Athletic Association to allow us to play in Conference USA or the MEAC. They want to leave the SEC so that UGA has the potential to win more championships. The Out of Conference games would be with Valdosta State, West Georgia and Mars Hill. Richt was overheard telling the AD and his current team, “Well if we can’t beat’em we’ll simply leave’m”.

Georgia’s athletic director, McGarity canceled a series that would have had the Bulldogs play Oregon in 2015 and 2016 — the first game in Eugene, the second in Athens. Oregon’s new athletic director also wanted out of that cross-country series..

I absolutely hate the fact that we dropped Oregon and added these cupcake teams. Since I no longer live in Atlanta I am not able to go home and watch games as often as I like, but I am willing to go see games against schools we don’t normally play like ASU, Colorado and Oregon. I am not willing to spend my money on coming home to watch us play these little cupcake teams (no offense to them), and sure it may toughen our schedule and we may lose a game or two, but atleast we are on the field and playing football, not patty-cake. I think McGarity is a great hire, but we are not Florida, don’t treat us like Florida, we don’t want to pad our schedule. I would rather go 3-9 playing tough teams, then 9-3 playing cupcakes!

I’ll be the 1st to tell you Georgia has ALWAYS been a joke program. The ONLY reason you won in 1980 was because of Herschel. Ever since then, people go on and on and on and on and on……..and on. The nation doesn’t care. Do you ESPN giving cuodo’s? No. Nobody cares about your constant trips to Shreveport, Memphis, Nashville. When you go to BCS games as constantly as FLORIDA, I’ll be impressed. You can’t back your crap up and you’re finally paying for the bragging.
