UGA adds Charleston Southern, Georgia Southern to future football schedules
Georgia has added Charleston Southern to its home football schedule for 2014 and Georgia Southern for 2016, UGA associate athletic director Arthur Johnson said this morning.
The Nov. 22, 2014, game will be Georgia’s first ever against Charleston Southern, while the Nov. 19, 2016, game will continue the Bulldogs’ trend of playing Georgia Southern once every four years.
Georgia will pay Charleston Southern $450,000 and Georgia Southern $525,000 for making the trips to Athens.
Both schools are Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) members. FCS teams command payouts considerably smaller than Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) teams. The going rate for getting a FBS team to play in your stadium without demanding a return trip is close to $1 million.
Georgia typically plays one FCS opponent per season.
Charleston Southern played at Florida last season and lost to the Gators 62-3. Georgia is 4-0 against Georgia Southern; the teams played in 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2008 and also are scheduled to play in 2012.

Dean, you’re a good Dawg fan. Yep, Oregon ran us off the field, but I’d rather get ran off the field playing a GOOD team than playing a small school looking for a paycheck (CSU). Not picking on the Buccaneers since I live in Charleston, but there is NO WAY Georgia loses to the Bucs. It’s a glorified scrimmage…no, wait, it’s an exhibition game.

It’s strictly to get 7 home game a year. GA-FL may not be in J’ville much longer.
F almost always plays 2 cupcakes before getting into the meat of their schedule. Could this help break in a new QB, defense, etc.? Maybe.
Other teams don’t seem to spaz as much as UGA about a new QB.

Good move from McGarity! I have been saying it forever. Playing all these tough non-conference games does not help it can only hurt your team. Look at UF they have been scheduling cupcakes for years now and it seems to work for them.

Think Georgia State may have some open dates and I hear Oglethorpe and Mercer would like to bring back football. The schedule possiblities are endless.
Must say my Jackets are not much better. Gardner-Webb? And we have Elon in the future.
One quality Southern Conference (Georgia Southern) team a year is okay.
Anything more is a rip-off. It’s like the pros charging full price for pre-season games.

Third, where did you go to school, cause you sound illiterate and they may need to get some of that stimulus money that the state won. Other SEC schools are playing West Coast schools? WHO? Name one, cause Alabama’s big OOC games are what, Duke, Georgia State, San Jose St. and Penn State. And Penn State is always weak, they just never play anyone. Florida is Miami (OH), USF, FSU (that ones every year though) and the mighty Appalachain St. Think about that.

While I’m on a roll, we enjoyed the banter with the Ducks fans. Good thing is, we don’t make the return trip to Eugene until 2013. Hopefully, we’ll give them a better game. Win or lose, can’t wait until the Oklahoma games (and the Nebraska games, and the Ohio State games)!

Go and look at Tennessee’s past OOC schedule over the past 10 years. Yes they have some very soft ones but over the past decade they played Notre Dame, Oregon, Cal , UCLA, Miami (FL), the list goes on. Ga went out and played OK State and ?
You dont move up the top 20 when you wont even put 1 challenging OOC game. Yes you play GT as most schools do play an in state rival !

These “cupcakes” serve a purpose. When you play in the toughest conference and have a natural in state rival that is in another BCS conference you don’t need to schedule these other games. The cupcakes give your team a chance to gel (early season), or get healthy (mid-late season)and most importantly get your backups a chance to play. I keep hearing folks bring up Tenn and Alabama, well sure they schedule a big name opponent they don’t have a natural out of conference rival. When Bama schedules a Penn State or Tenn an Oregon those games are their FSU or GT. Why is that so hard to see? Get a grip people! We want to win championships so we go out and bring a local home grown product in McGarity who worked for one of the most successful programs over the last 20yrs, and he starts making changes to put us in the best possible situation to compete for a championship and you’re whinning?! Again I’d rather go to Atlanta in Dec than Eugene in October!

Thank you McGarity for doing more to embarrass, ruin and take the fun out of our program in one month than even Ray Goff did in his entire tenure. I’ve been a die hard dawg for 30 years, but i’m at at the end of my rope. Every day we seem to sink lower than the day before. theres not a single thing to get excited about anymore.
