Emptying the notebook before heading to Colorado …
11:00 pm September 30, 2010, by Tim Tucker
- An interesting observation from Mike Bobo about running back Carlton Thomas, the Bulldogs’ smallest player: “Carlton has never been in a green jersey his whole career here.” Green jerseys are worn at practice by players who have injuries that preclude them from contact.
- Drew Butler and Blair Walsh can’t wait to kick in Colorado’s mile-high air.
Butler visited a friend in Denver in May and took the opportunity to punt a few balls while he was there. He said they traveled about 3-5 yards longer and were in the air about two-tenths of a second longer, adding to his hang time. “When it’s humid and it’s wet here in the summer, the thick air just holds the ball down, but out there, it’s crisp and the ball flies,” Butler said. “It’s fun kicking.”
Walsh, whose career-long field goal is 53 yards at Oklahoma State in 2009, said he’d like to try a field goal of 60-plus yards in Saturday’s game and will try a kick from 70 yards in warm-ups.
- A 1-3 record is a shock to the system of Georgia fans — and players. “I don’t think anybody on the team right now had ever started any season of playing football one and three,” defensive lineman DeAngelo Tyson said.
- Georgia will be just the second SEC team ever to play a game in Boulder. The only other time an SEC team played there was on Sept. 15, 1979, when LSU beat the Buffaloes 44-0.
- Counting road and bowl games, Colorado has played a dozen games against SEC teams. The Buffaloes are 2-9-1, including a 14-13 loss at Georgia in 2006.
- This will be Georgia’s third game against a Big 12 team since the start of last season. The Bulldogs opened last season with a loss to Oklahoma State and ended it with an Independence Bowl victory over Texas A&M. Of course, Colorado won’t be in the Big 12 much longer; the Buffaloes join the Pac-10 next year.
- As A.J. Green returns from suspension, it’s not clear if Kris Durham, Georgia’s top receiver in Green’s absence, will be able to play. Durham suffered what he called a stretched nerve in his neck late in last week’s game. Durham said he’ll “be fine by Saturday,” but coach Mark Richt called him questionable.
- Offensive lineman Trinton Sturdivant continues to work his way back. He played 20-plus snaps last week. The plan is for him to play more each week.
- Todd Grantham has been stressing two things with the defense this week: “start and finish.” The defense has given up touchdowns on the opponent’s opening possession in the past three games. And then it’s tended to play pretty well until struggling again near the end of the games.
“If you go back to the South Carolina game, the score is 14-6 and it’s late in the fourth quarter and we can’t stop them and get the ball back,” Grantham said. “Go to Arkansas; the score is 24-24 and we have had some stops, we do stop them, then we have to go back out for a two-minute drive and we don’t stop them then. And then you go to this past game [against Mississippi State] and it’s 10-6 late in the fourth quarter and we don’t stop them.
“You’re going to be in all sorts of games, and whatever has happened up until then . . . you got to finish that game,” Grantham said. “That’s the thing in the last three games: We haven’t finished.”

Open letter:
Here’s the problem.
In your third paragraph, you say “…belittle and condemn student athletes who spend hours…honor to their school”
I have no problem with those guys. Look at Durden. Class act, and it shows when he plays. Same with Murray.
The problem is the “playas” who seem to be only interested in “me”. The 10 this year, and the others before them. I question whether some of these people are college material.
Dancing on the field when you’re getting your butt kicked? Give me a break.
Should they strive to bring honor to their school, they will have earned respect.
And btw, I was already working when you were doing yardwork for your Dad, so I too remember 1980. But I don’t ever remember seeing Herschel thumping his chest and bobbing his head.

Buffs were 3-9 last year for the 2nd year in a row and haven’t had a losing season in 5 years. This is a really bad program. Does Georgia ever schedule a top 1-3 tier team in a BCS conference- an OU, Ohio State, Penn State, VT, USC, or do they just take middle tier teams that suck like ASU, Colorado, Ok state- finished out of top 25 last year and have never won their division? Oh, wait. Dawgs did have Oregon scheduled which is now a power in the pac 10. Oh, what happened? Oh, that’s right. Dawgs canceled it. Cowards!

The best way to tell if the dawgs will win on Saturday is if they come out crossed arms like they used to on road games in the start of CMR era. Every time they did that they one and played together. Optimistic but if we lose this one man were really in trouble as far as recruiting goes.

Maybe the most important game for the DAWGS in the last decade. Not in light of most hyped match but because of the integrity of the program is at stake. 1-4 would be hard to comprehend as much or more than 1-3 with a loss to Mrs. State.
If we loose this week I am not sure the ships direction can be corrected with the current make up. Dooley’s Vols will be licking their chops.
This is a Man up week or should I say DAWG up. Are they DAWG enough?

Grantham should be stressing or emphasizing fundamental tackling and wrapping the runner up. I actually saw a UGA defensive player jump on a running back last Saturday. So sad.

Shut your piehole and go back to work you moron!
Colorado was a middle of the pack and on the rise program when Damon scheduled them. Oklahoma State was the same and actually ranked in the top 20 when UGA played them last year. Louisville was scheduled when Bobby Petrino had the Cardinals playing great ball. So, please save useless garbage that you’re spilling on our blog.

Finally, as in why are you the last to see, some positive recognition for Thomas by our coaching staff – he’s the only tough runner you got; King is an injury waiting to happen; and Ealey is better suited for Dancing with the Stars.

Scheduler, Oregon AND UGA decided to cancel the series. Mutual cancellation. Florida does it BAMA does it. Our new scheduling philosphy does not vary that much from any other program in the country. This season we are on the road for the third straight week. Arkansas, Miss State and now out to Colorado. That’s not easy even when you are in top notch shape and we aren’t.
Also everybody sees the Boise State schedule and sees that that will get you to #3 in the country.

…..furthermore, you idiot, schedules are made years in advance in most instances so there’s no way to predict where a team will rank by the time you actually play them. But, I guess a real sports follower would know this, unlike you.

Here’s a thought….UGA should move to Boise St’s conference and play their schedule with the toughest game at the beginning of the season where you can have all summer to game plan. Then play the powder puffs each week with maybe another BCS foe sprinkled in somewhere. Go undefeated then have the whole month of the season to prepare for a bowl game. This sounds like a good recipe for getting to (hmmm, where is Boise St ranked?)….umm #3. Yeah, that’s right, let’s do it….excuse me Mr. McGarity, do you have a moment……

Just a happy reminder about Colorado…they came to Athens in 2006 and almost beat us at the end of the game. Final was 14-13 UGA, but the Buffs missing a late field goal is all that saved us.
Considering their home advantage, thinner air and our travel time, this could be a very tough game for the Dawgs.

kgb you are right richt did get on defensive co and thats why he had to tune it down. harold you are right also but i take it further richt should have been fired after the arkansa game. give me a break this guy is not a good coach. georgia has the same number of players in the nfl as florida and yet have not played for 1 title in his time. this guy is a joke a fraud he won with superior talent not because he is a coach. why as fans do we have to suffer with this guy because he is nice. florida fired ron zook for going 8-4 and yet georgia rewards it. thats why we will be a bottom feeder forever with vanderbilt, kentucky. i support the players but richt and bobo must go now.

AJ and Durham are going to make Murray look like a superstar by the season’s end.Chris has stepped his game up and should get a lot of 1on1 looks with Green on the field. The quality of the D goes down these next 4 games so I look for the offense to improve.
Grantham has got to get teams off the field on 3rd down period. The O got the ball once in the 3rd quarter and with 4 minutes left in the game down 17-6 last week…that is unacceptable..

All I got to say is one thing:
How the HELL can you have a top 5 recruiting class EVERY YEAR but yet you suck so bad?! Us Yellow Jackets average 25-30th best recruiting class every year and we still compete and are ranked nationally EVERY YEAR. If Tech had a top 5 recruiting class every year we would be a CONSISTENTLY top 10 team. Just goes to show you the kind of hard working, motivated players/Individuals that go to Tech compared to the “4 and 5 star” lazy thug recruits that go to UGA just looking for a frat party to attend and an easy major that they can coast through. Straight up sorryness going on over there in Athens.
So tell me uGAY fans….How do you recruit so well and SUCK so bad? I dont get it.

And I wouldn’t be so sure about you guys beating us, we have NO defense to speak of but we do still have an offense capable of putting up a lot of points. UGA has NO defense AND NO offense. Unless ya’ll get some kinks (or knots) ironed out by Thanksgiving then we will be beating yall down in Athens for the SECOND TIME IN A ROW.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?
As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.
Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.
So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?
Just asking.

Since dawgtards seem to love living in the past, how about remembering the Jan Kemp trial, which exposed UGA and Vince Dooley for the jokes that they were. My favorite quote from the trial was this one:
O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
The best thing about the trial was that it completely killed Vince Dooley’s shot at Congress, since he was exposed as a fraud and a cheat during the trial. Make no mistake – Dooley knew everything that was going on.
Nothing has changed in the almost three decades since the trial. If anything, the abuses are even worse. Exhibit #1: Jim Harrick and son.
Today the players are even more illiterate and felonious and, well, just plain stupid, as evidenced by their arrest records and record number of penalties. Even Vince Dooley couldn’t have controlled this mob, much less Mark Richt. And now even the AD is a drunk debaucherer.
There’s a reason why UGA is known as The Cesspool of the South.

I have to agree that our running backs look below average thus far. I always think of UGA as having amongst the best in the country…..not this year.
Washaun has regressed as a football player. He is headed in the wrong direction. Caleb runs like he’s afraid to make a cut. Maybe we just line up with Carlton at TB and maybe but Chapas back there every now and again.
Agreed that repeated 3 and outs is tough on a defense. The “D” is not the problem.

I am surprised by the lack of ethics by rival fans on this board.
For starters, don’t y’all have a home of your own, or are you simply message board transients? Y’all remind me of the mentally challenged man outside the store who shouts Tourett’e Syndrome-like taunts at passers by. Sad.
Your own message boards could benefit from the wealth of knowledge you have to share. Surely you are welcome somewhere.
It boils down to class and basic home training. No one has shown y’all how to respect others. Technically, you should know better, as you have recieved some form of formal education. In other words, if you have the intelligence to come on here tryin’ to put down our program, you should have some basic understanding of values and ethics.
Morally, what’s worse? Getting a ticket and fleeing, or hiding behind a keyboard and slinging taunts toward your in-state brothers.
Getting caught for DUI as an 18 year-old, or wasting your intelligence on attempting to demoralize others.
Seems to me…….if you have all this knowledge, you should know better than to be on here TROLLING.
Y’all try to treat your own families better than you treat this one.
