Georgia-Oregon games canceled; Georgia-Tennessee game time set

Georgia and Oregon have agreed to cancel a home-and-home football series that was scheduled in 2015 and 2016.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said today that the decision was a mutual one between him and Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens.

On Georgia’s end, the move reflects McGarity’s preference to have seven home games each season. The 2015 game was to have been played in Eugene, Ore., and the 2016 game in Athens.

Since both schools wanted out of the series, no buyout was involved, McGarity said.

“It had to be a win-win,” McGarity said. “I don’t feel comfortable at all about buying out contracts. . . . If [Mullens] had said, ‘We really need to play these games,’ then they would still be on the schedule. We would not [buy out contracts]; I don’t think that’s the right thing to do as an institution.”

++++++++++

The Georgia-Tennessee football game in Athens on Oct. 9 will kick off at 12:21 p.m. and be televised by the SEC Network, it was announced today.

The game, of course, will mark the return of a Dooley to the sideline at Sanford Stadium — Tennessee coach Derek Dooley, son of  legendary former Georgia coach and athletic director Vince Dooley.

The game will be Georgia’s third at home this season. The first two also had noon-ish kickoffs.

Tennessee is 2-2 (0-1 SEC) and plays at LSU on Saturday. Georgia is 1-3 (0-3 SEC) and plays a non-conference game at Colorado on Saturday.

CBS will televise either the Alabama-South Carolina or LSU-Florida game at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 9, with the other at 7:30 p.m. on either ESPN or ESPN2. CBS will choose between the two games by Sunday.

Saturday’s Georgia-Colorado game in Boulder will kick off at 7:10 p.m. ET and be televised on Fox Sports Net.

Doesn’t matter who wins last place in the SEC (isn’t that what this game is about?) thUGA stole the Fulmer Cup and renamed it the Richt Cup.

And no, it can’t be stolen back – thUGA isn’t done taking a commanding lead to keep it.

I spend so much time and money for this to go on. We wait all year for efforts like this. Now we have no hope and its not even Ocotober yet. You can blame the University for all the noon kickoffs. If you don’t think they have something to do with it you are crazy. All because a $25 million dollar profit organazation doesn’t want to pay minimum wage for people to pick up trash.

There would be no other coach available out there with those resumes. Both Kirby Smart and Will Muschamp have zero experience as head coaches and would be huge risks. Personally, i think we need to scrap the pro-style offense and implement the spread. We need to replace Bobo and pay megabucks for a hot shot coordinator. Defensively, i think we will be fine and should be much better next year under Grantham.

UGA has cancelled its home and home series with Oregon and the new AD has indicated UGA will not be scheduling games against more than one competitive BCS game outside the conference in the future. Assuming that tech is considered competitive, this means UGA will be playing three LA-Monroe types each year in the future.

If this is not throwing in the towel to developing a nationally competitive program with a national following, then tell me what this is?

I very rarely post on these Blogs, i read them most days on lunch or during down time at work. However i have one thing to say. Does the Tax Jacket have anything else to do other than troll these UGA blogs and make fun of GA football? How can he even talk? Tech hasn’t been in any kind of real hunt for anything other than a whipping by GA and Iowa with their best team in 20 years. When was the last time Tech had any relevance? This is true that UGA is awful this year and yes it is true that Tech won one a couple years back, but at least that GA won a BCS Bowl in the last decade, at least they won a couple of conference titles, yeah Georgia Sucks, their record is and most likely will stay awful for the rest of the season, but at least we Will get better, Tech’s story of mediocrity will continue long after GA has climbed fom the cellar, if they didn’t play in such a patsy conference they would have won nothing…ever. TaxCollector, find something relevant to speak about instead of your continuous drolling about our record this season, take a look at your own. We lost to SC, ARK, Miss ST. You have been beaten by Kansas and NC state, both of whom would be continuous bottom dwellers in the SEC. Go back to your mommy’s basement, put your thumb in your mouth and keep on crying for attention. God knows you Techies can’t get it from anywhere else but on these blogs.

At this point, he has 8 games to prove to me he deserves to be back next year. 5-3 won’t be enough for me in the next 8. He needs to show improvement each week as well. He got a break last year and was allowed to make the changes he felt he had to. Obviously, many more changes needed to be made at that time and he didn’t see it. Now is the time to make it happen.

Nine games against SEC teams plus GT equals four home games, four road games, and one neutral site game.

UGA football, a program that generates millions in profit every year, insists on seven home games every year.

That means no high-profile opponents. That means no national prominence.

Since UGA can afford a road game every other year (or every third year or fourth year), the scheduling philosophy is absurd.

Evans had it right in scheduling recognized opponents. Tennessee does it (UCLA). Auburn does it (Clemson). LSU does it (UNC). What is UGA afraid of?

I don’t agree with the comments that the Oregon-UGA series was cancelled to get an easy win – although I am sure that the replacement will be a weaker team than Oregon. Both teams cancelled for exactly the same reason – to not have a road game. Captain Dave, you asked what is UGA scared of? Embarrassement is the word. I think on Oregon’s side the cancellation might have had to do with them coming 3 times zones east very early in the season, but for UGA I think it had more to do with the fear of losing to a legitimate team west of the Mississippi River. Oklahoma State last year gave you all the info you needed into why they never play legitimate non conference opponents who hail west of the Mississippi at their place…..they get beat convincingly. You have to go all the way back to 1967 (if you don’t count Stillwater last year) to find the last time UGA played a non conference opponent on the road west of Louisiana. They lost to Houston. Do think its a coincidence that in 42 years (1967-2009) they didn’t play a single OOC road game from Texas westward (bowl games don’t count)? I know I don’t.

I hope UGA gets it together. I do think that paying fans have a right to feel upset & let down. Some may probably think that the players feel worse, but the truth is most of them don’t seem to feel worse (there are a few exceptions). For the most part the ‘fans’ that complained about Martinez 3+ yrs ago were right. These ‘fans’ that complained about the arrest rate in Athens getting out of control one day, were right. These ‘fans’ that have said Bobo isn’t a very good offensive cord. were right. These ‘fans’ that were worried about Mark Richt’s teams slipping into mediocrity were right.
I hope they’re wrong, but I have my doubts. One other thing: When a coach arrives much like Richt did in 2001, and players ‘buy into’ their system, it gives the players something to believe in. When the players stop believing, all you have left is a bunch of players without confidence. At that point it doesn’t matter what Coach tells them in the locker room at half-time. If they stop believing, all hope is gone.

Liked to have gotten Kris Durham killed on what should have been an easy pass last week. If you can’t hit ‘em in stride, you can’t get any yards after the catch. He’s a decent runner. They should put him in the option. Maybe bring back the Veer. He’s not a good passer.

“Win-win”????! Who are you going to schedule in Oregon’s place, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels? This is a lose-lose for fans.

I’m very disappointed about the Oreg0n cancellation and even more disappointed about the comment from McGarity that Georgia wants to play seven home games every season. With the neutal site Florida game, Georgia alternates between 3 and 4 home conference games with the GT game at home in the years with 3 home conference games. To get 7 home games every year means not playing any other home and away series against real competition.

Frankly, I wouldn’t have minded UGA dropping Oregon to play in the Chick-Fil-A kick-off game against an ACC team or if they wanted to play a home and home against someone like Clemson or VT. The travel to the Oregon game is a valid concern – it can really hurt you the following week when you travel that far. However, I suspect Oregon will be replaced with a Charleston Southern level game.

another SEC team afraid to travel West…How surprising is that…I guess UGA can now schedule Georgia State Univ. or Atlanta Community College. SEC out of confernce schedules are awful.

Georgia should have eight home games like Florida. The game in Jacksonville is in reality is a Florida home game.

Sanford Stadium should be used for football games more than six days per year.

Seriously, you know things are bad when we are running from the likes of Oregon. I’m not liking this new AD’s philosophy. We are turning pathetic.

I truly believe UGAY wanted out of the Oregon series because they can foresee a butt kicking that far in the future and Oregon agree because they didn’t want to play someone that would hurt their BCS rankings.

I think mowing the grass is looking good. You are a joker to go the game and put more effort in driving there than this bunch does on the Grid iron…

also we are know as not playing a tough out of confrnece schedule. How many time have you seen UGA out west cost out of there comfort zone. They wanted out of the Oregon game becuase we know we can not match the ducks and we give the SEC a black eye

I’m so disappointed that the Oregon series got cancelled. I make a college football roadtrip every year and I’ve had that game in Eugene circled on my calendar for a long time. Was going to fit in a trip to Crater Lake, etc. I hate the way scheduling is trending in college football. Why can’t the big boys play big boy schedules and let the chips fall where they may? Everybody’s so worried about their BCS rankings that they forsake the ideal of competition for competition’s sake.

Cancelations

September 29th, 2010

UGA is appealing to the SEC to cancel all hard SEC games for a few years until “they get better” as mcgarity said. So far, no response from the league office.
