Georgia-Oregon games canceled; Georgia-Tennessee game time set

Georgia and Oregon have agreed to cancel a home-and-home football series that was scheduled in 2015 and 2016.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said today that the decision was a mutual one between him and Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens.

On Georgia’s end, the move reflects McGarity’s preference to have seven home games each season. The 2015 game was to have been played in Eugene, Ore., and the 2016 game in Athens.

Since both schools wanted out of the series, no buyout was involved, McGarity said.

“It had to be a win-win,” McGarity said. “I don’t feel comfortable at all about buying out contracts. . . . If [Mullens] had said, ‘We really need to play these games,’ then they would still be on the schedule. We would not [buy out contracts]; I don’t think that’s the right thing to do as an institution.”

The Georgia-Tennessee football game in Athens on Oct. 9 will kick off at 12:21 p.m. and be televised by the SEC Network, it was announced today.

The game, of course, will mark the return of a Dooley to the sideline at Sanford Stadium — Tennessee coach Derek Dooley, son of  legendary former Georgia coach and athletic director Vince Dooley.

The game will be Georgia’s third at home this season. The first two also had noon-ish kickoffs.

Tennessee is 2-2 (0-1 SEC) and plays at LSU on Saturday. Georgia is 1-3 (0-3 SEC) and plays a non-conference game at Colorado on Saturday.

CBS will televise either the Alabama-South Carolina or LSU-Florida game at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 9, with the other at 7:30 p.m. on either ESPN or ESPN2. CBS will choose between the two games by Sunday.

Saturday’s Georgia-Colorado game in Boulder will kick off at 7:10 p.m. ET and be televised on Fox Sports Net.

I like the idea that Richt recruits troubled youth in order to minister to them. If that is true, he is failing in his ministry and in his coaching. Perhaps he should stick with selling trucks.

This team has no class , i have never seen a uga team with no emotional feeling as this one. i have never seen an oc blame his freshman qb for losing a game for holding the ball too long. bobo your the problem, you sucked as a qb & still suck as an oc. murray is the only one with any pride on this team. i am sick of hearing how great c king and w ealey are and wait to we get AJ back crap!!! AJ is part of the problem!! brake those rules buddy. murray should try and get a hardship transfer for non support. put bobo on the road tonight. can you name the only division 1a school to down size it ’s stadium in the past 10 years. can you spell ga tech? great support guys keep buying those season tickets..

McGarity = Gutless

Why do you have to say that it was a mutual decision… the only one commenting on it is McGarity. After his comments last week about scheduling you know this was completely his idea and not something Oregon came to UGA about. You don’t want to play Oregon? Own it…. don’t cower behind your bogus claim this was a mutual decision.

These early kickoff times will lead me to drop my tickets faster than the numbers of games lost.

AJ is back this week – finally.
CMR – take over play calling. Bobo – coach the QBs (then bye-bye after the seaon).
Murray’s doing a great job. How about some protection from the OL???
Oh, and maybe a little fan support – I’m sure the team feels really great about how the seaon has started. Yeah – they love losing.
New DC with a new sceme, freshman QB – I guess everyone thought this was a natl championship team. Since eveyone knows so much, maybe McGarity should start contacting you and getting advice. Problem solved. Now let’s bash McGarity – are you kidding? Great hire. And who cares about Oregon??? Anything else you can bitch about? I’m sure.

Whew, what a relief! I mean, who wants to see a Georgia-Oregon series? Now we can get down with some real football teams like Louisiana-Monroe, Charleston or Florida International. Who knows, maybe we can entice Eastern Washington to fly over for what’s sure to be a barnburner. Get out your wallets, fans!

Losing respect for this new AD fast, If you don’t want to play anyone, don’t schedule new games. But to take off scheduled games shows just how fearful the Dawgs are of any competition. By 2016 Ga State will be the premiere program in the state. as UGA will fall to a second tier team in the SEC.

I don’t know Marie – I wasn’t interested much in a game against a PAC 10 power, but if Georgia replaces them with someone like Montana State or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo…well, I’m only human.

The new AD is going to have a schedule like UF does no tough occ games. UF doesnt even travel out of state for occ games. They play an easy occ every year. Going out west and then coming back and playing UT the following week is crazy.

And the news out of Athens just keeps getting worse. Unbelievable. I was REALLY looking forward to those games. I guess Georgia will schedule St. Mary’s Sister’s Nursing School instead. What a bunch of cowards.

What was up with all the White shirts at the GT game Saturday. Were all that half empty stadium trying to surrender even before kickoff? I think those sweat bees got the message. They were in surrender mode from the start.

Murray doing a “great job”? Give me a break. He’s slightly better than Tereshinski. He consistently underthrows, and throws behind, receivers. Liked to have gotten Kris Durham killed on what should have been an easy pass last week. If you can’t hit ‘em in stride, you can’t get any yards after the catch. He’s a decent runner. They should put him in the option. Maybe bring back the Veer. He’s not a good passer.

“Win-win”????! Who are you going to schedule in Oregon’s place, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels? This is a lose-lose for fans.

I’m very disappointed about the Oreg0n cancellation and even more disappointed about the comment from McGarity that Georgia wants to play seven home games every season. With the neutal site Florida game, Georgia alternates between 3 and 4 home conference games with the GT game at home in the years with 3 home conference games. To get 7 home games every year means not playing any other home and away series against real competition.

Frankly, I wouldn’t have minded UGA dropping Oregon to play in the Chick-Fil-A kick-off game against an ACC team or if they wanted to play a home and home against someone like Clemson or VT. The travel to the Oregon game is a valid concern – it can really hurt you the following week when you travel that far. However, I suspect Oregon will be replaced with a Charleston Southern level game.

another SEC team afraid to travel West…How surprising is that…I guess UGA can now schedule Georgia State Univ. or Atlanta Community College. SEC out of confernce schedules are awful.

Georgia should have eight home games like Florida. The game in Jacksonville is in reality is a Florida home game.

Sanford Stadium should be used for football games more than six days per year.

I truly believe UGAY wanted out of the Oregon series because they can foresee a butt kicking that far in the future and Oregon agree because they didn’t want to play someone that would hurt their BCS rankings.

also we are know as not playing a tough out of confrnece schedule. How many time have you seen UGA out west cost out of there comfort zone. They wanted out of the Oregon game becuase we know we can not match the ducks and we give the SEC a black eye

I’m so disappointed that the Oregon series got cancelled. I make a college football roadtrip every year and I’ve had that game in Eugene circled on my calendar for a long time. Was going to fit in a trip to Crater Lake, etc. I hate the way scheduling is trending in college football. Why can’t the big boys play big boy schedules and let the chips fall where they may? Everybody’s so worried about their BCS rankings that they forsake the ideal of competition for competition’s sake.

UGA is appealing to the SEC to cancel all hard SEC games for a few years until “they get better” as mcgarity said. So far, no response from the league office.
