Georgia-Oregon games canceled; Georgia-Tennessee game time set

Georgia and Oregon have agreed to cancel a home-and-home football series that was scheduled in 2015 and 2016.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said today that the decision was a mutual one between him and Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens.

On Georgia’s end, the move reflects McGarity’s preference to have seven home games each season. The 2015 game was to have been played in Eugene, Ore., and the 2016 game in Athens.

Since both schools wanted out of the series, no buyout was involved, McGarity said.

“It had to be a win-win,” McGarity said. “I don’t feel comfortable at all about buying out contracts. . . . If [Mullens] had said, ‘We really need to play these games,’ then they would still be on the schedule. We would not [buy out contracts]; I don’t think that’s the right thing to do as an institution.”

The Georgia-Tennessee football game in Athens on Oct. 9 will kick off at 12:21 p.m. and be televised by the SEC Network, it was announced today.

The game, of course, will mark the return of a Dooley to the sideline at Sanford Stadium — Tennessee coach Derek Dooley, son of  legendary former Georgia coach and athletic director Vince Dooley.

The game will be Georgia’s third at home this season. The first two also had noon-ish kickoffs.

Tennessee is 2-2 (0-1 SEC) and plays at LSU on Saturday. Georgia is 1-3 (0-3 SEC) and plays a non-conference game at Colorado on Saturday.

CBS will televise either the Alabama-South Carolina or LSU-Florida game at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 9, with the other at 7:30 p.m. on either ESPN or ESPN2. CBS will choose between the two games by Sunday.

Saturday’s Georgia-Colorado game in Boulder will kick off at 7:10 p.m. ET and be televised on Fox Sports Net.

Hire Dabo? Are you nuts? No chance he would step down to the likes of thUGA. If you want an ACC coach, call Wake or Duke.

Now maybe we could get one of Dabo’s assistants like how we Richt from FSU. Maybe N.C. State has an assistant, say Tenuta?

Nine games against SEC teams plus GT equals four home games, four road games, and one neutral site game.

UGA football, a program that generates millions in profit every year, insists on seven home games every year.

That means no high-profile opponents. That means no national prominence.

Since UGA can afford a road game every other year (or every third year or fourth year), the scheduling philosophy is absurd.

Evans had it right in scheduling recognized opponents. Tennessee does it (UCLA). Auburn does it (Clemson). LSU does it (UNC). What is UGA afraid of?

I liked the ideas of the home and home series, I already don’t like this Florida Gator AD we hired!! But, if he says we only need to play one other BCS conference school every year, can we get rid of GT? I don’t consider them or the ACC a BCS team or Conference.

thUGA is afraid of the first tier football schools which make the SEC appear to be a tough conference. They need cream puffs and a bye. They have to play and lose to Florida and Auburn. They still fear Alabama and LSU. Obviously USC, UK, and UT can bite them. Tech as late is a toss-up.

ThUGA is not a contender, but a poser pretender.

The Dawgs have no heart….they quit before they started. They are terrible. Not playing as a unit…no respect for the school or the coach. Richt can’t get it done….how much longer till there is a change…how many more losses this year? At least 4……wow 5-7!!! This has been coming for a long time…

There was a poll on another site..50% said get rid of Richt, he won’t win a NC
25% said keep him cause he will win a NC
25 % said he wont but stick w him anyway????????Who are these people.

This is too much……..we have a bunch of heartless wusses for as team and a jesus freak coach that commands no respect….we are pitiful!

If McGarity is gonna schedule another cupcake, I least fine one with some alumni base in Atlanta or of some local interest. Not Idaho State or New Mexico State. Hell, I’d rather pay to see The Citadel, Furman, FA&M.

Alabama can BEAT teams like that. thUGA gets rolled by the second and third tier teams in the SEC like UT, UK, USC, and now MSU. thUGA simply can’t get past the necessary first tier teams in the SEC, so why would they schedule an outside first tier team (can’t include N.D. there).

Richt and McGarity want nothing to do with playing oregon and getting blown out on national tv. Instead, they can schedule a creampuff for an easy win like florida does every year—smarter move.

I don’t agree with the comments that the Oregon-UGA series was cancelled to get an easy win – although I am sure that the replacement will be a weaker team than Oregon. Both teams cancelled for exactly the same reason – to not have a road game. UGA (and a bunch of other schools – UF, PSU, UM, etc) schedule as many home games as possible for the $$$ – kind of like exhibition games in the NFL.

Captain Dave, you asked what is UGA scared of? Embarrassement is the word. I think on Oregon’s side the cancellation might have had to do with them coming 3 times zones east very early in the season, but for UGA I think it had more to do with the fear of losing to a legitimate team west of the Mississippi River. Oklahoma State last year gave you all the info you needed into why they never play legitimate non conference opponents who hail west of the Mississippi at their place…..they get beat convincingly. You have to go all the way back to 1967 (if you don’t count Stillwater last year) to find the last time UGA played a non conference opponent on the road west of Louisiana. They lost to Houston. Do think its a coincidence that in 42 years (1967-2009) they didn’t play a single OOC road game from Texas westward (bowl games don’t count)? I know I don’t.

Oregon backed out of the series because they have nothing to gain by playing a Sun Belt Conference team. Which is about the level UGA is playing at now. With any luck the Sun Belt folks will open up a spot for us before out SEC losing streak reaches 50.

All you anti-Richt posters are idiots…..Sure–we’re in a down cycle. All schools go through them. Georgia is 2 seasons and four games removed from finishing second in the nation…..Richt will make the changes he needs to make. All you would-be fans are of the same ilk as the Tech-mites. 90% of you haven’t bought a ticket in years anyway….one guy even bragged that he would “turn off the TV.” Who gives a rat’s a$$ what you morons say. Richt doesn’t. Adams doesn’t. McGarrity doesn’t. When Georgia is back on top–and she will be–stay your a$$es away!

UGA shouldn’t pander to media and fans who think a team needs to travel cross country just to prove they can play outside the southeast. There’s plenty of quality opponents to find without that much regular season travel.

What a joke! Who the heck cares about a 7th home game when it is against the likes of Idaho State. I don’t need anymore information… the McGarity hire was a big mistake!! Well I’ll admit the seventh home game means less to me living in Boise and I am very dissapointed as I was hoping to make my first trip to Eugene for a game. It will just mean one less game I can see on TV as I am sure whatever the scheduled replacement team will be will not be televised nationally.

Halsey this has nothing to do with scheduling nationally… basically McGarity’s philosophy is to not schedule home and home games with other BCS teams, so Georgia can have 7 home games. This will include not scheduling even ACC teams other than Tech. He’d rather pay cream puffs for guaranteed wins…so instead of getting to see a home game against another major school have fun watching more of Louisiana Lafayette.

I hope UGA gets it together. I do think that paying fans have a right to feel upset & let down. Some may probably think that the players feel worse, but the truth is most of them don’t seem to feel worse (there are a few exceptions). For the most part the ‘fans’ that complained about Martinez 3+ yrs ago were right. These ‘fans’ that complained about the arrest rate in Athens getting out of control one day, were right. These ‘fans’ that have said Bobo isn’t a very good offensive cord. were right. These ‘fans’ that were worried about Mark Richt’s teams slipping into mediocrity were right.
I hope they’re wrong, but I have my doubts. One other thing: When a coach arrives much like Richt did in 2001, and players ‘buy into’ their system, it gives the players something to believe in. When the players stop believing, all you have left is a bunch of players without confidence. At that point it doesn’t matter what Coach tells them in the locker room at half-time. If they stop believing, all hope is gone.
