Richt: ‘We’ve got to look within, starting with me, as to the things that have kept us’ from success

For a complete roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s loss to Mississippi State, please click here.

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Partial transcript of Mark Richt’s news conference following Saturday night’s 24-12 loss to Mississippi State:

Opening comments: “We’re definitely in  a position that I’ve never been in as  a player or a coach. . . .  It’s certainly not a good place to be, but we are where we are. We’ve got to stay together, and I’ve seen no signs of change in my mindset that we’re a close-knit family. But we’ve also got to look within, starting with me, as to the things that have kept us from having the success that we want. That’s what we’re going to do.” (Later, asked for specifics, Richt said:  “I’m not going to say anything right now, because I’m not sure. I need time to watch and reflect.”)

“I want to congratulate Coach Mullen and Mississippi State on the great job they did. They came out ready to play. They played hard, and they did what they had to do to win the game. Their fans did a wonderful job of supporting them.”

On Georgia’s lack of scoring: “We had a turnover inside the red zone and a penalty on a touchdown that got called back, so that’s at least one touchdown and possibly two touchdowns right there that got taken away.”

On where the team is: “If you go by watching film down by down, you’d say we’re not as far off as some people might think, but if you look at the record, then we are pretty far off of where we want to be.”

On Mississippi State’s defense: “They were blitzing a lot and out-numbering the running game and trying to pressure the quarterback. They were blitzing the quarterback a lot because he was a freshman, but they blitz a lot anyway, period. My guess is that there were a higher percentage than most of their games. At times we just called running plays blindly. We were going to run the play no matter what, and there were times where we had success and times where we got hit in the mouth.”

On being 0-3 in the SEC: “I never would’ve predicted it, but that’s where we’re at.”

On Mississippi State’s opening touchdown: “You’d like to get a stop and get points on the board yourself. It’s a 60-minute football game, though, so it wasn’t the difference in the ballgame. It was good for Mississippi State to build momentum, but we didn’t feel like that had a tremendous effect on the football game.”

With that kind of strategy and the nonchalance about the other team scoring, no wonder UGA is 1-3. This kind of thinking in a must win game is astounding.

We might be the worst team in the SEC. Maybe the team should have had more contact during summer practice. Yeah, we made it through with no injuries but these players seem really timid.

The “called running plays blindly” thing is the tip of the s*** iceberg as far as the play-calling is concerned.

Chris Petersen of Boise State has never had a five star and only two star recruits in his time there. Heck he has never had a top 50 recruiting class and often finishes 2nd or 3rd in recruiting classes in the WAC!!! Imagine if he was at UGA? Been a DAWGS fan for 35 years and this is as bad as I remember. Seems like Richt has lost control over the team. No discipline off the field, no discipline on the field. Fumbles, penalties, blown coverages, etc. Time to blow it up and start again…

According to the Rivals.com rankings, Boise State has 11 commitments in its 2011 class, five of which are three-star prospects. Still, it’s not enough to land Boise State in the Top 50 of Rivals.com’s 2011 rankings.

Boise State’s 2010 recruiting class wasn’t even best among WAC schools. Or second-best. The 10-member class featured a four-star and six three-stars, but the Broncos finished behind Hawaii and Fresno State in their own league.

Go Get Chris should be the new chant at UGA

Not scrimmaging is the root of all of UGA’s problems. If you don’t scrimmage, then you can’t be physical enough to win in the SEC. With supposed talent up and down the roster, CMR shouldn’t be worried about injuries. Just plug in the next player. I would rather have scrimmaged hardened 2nd teamer in there than a mentally/physically weak starter, who gives in when the game gets physical. CMR supposedly learned this lesson a couple of years ago, but apparently he was just giving lip service to the notion of scrimmaging. I wonder if Saban scrimmages..LOL. THIS IS FOOTBALL! Time for UGA to man up. They are way too soft.

We all have been watching and reflecting too….this is awful. I certainly hope for his job’s sake this is a deer n the headlights wake up call. I love Coach Richt and believe he is an honest Christian man with a wonderful family. However we all need to wake up in the reality that if your heart isn’t in being a coach anymore and championships aren’t the motivation to be a coach its time to move on. This has been “rebuilding” time after time. This was a terrible game played no matter how you cut it, dice it, and slice it.
Look to do the fans of UGA a disservice and make 2 million a year…thats a crime in my opinion… if your goal is not to win championships. Its fine to be a a Christian with a great Christian testimony its another to steal the fans and base blindly with a nonchalant caring attitude. I hope this watching and reflecting means”real” change is coming. You know who says the same thing too…OBAMA.

Well i should be in bed right now….thought i would get some perspective for the “dawgtalk” call-in show for the fans, but Jeff D. wouldd rather talk about all the georgia history…i think they took, maybe 4 phone calls in two hours…the show is awful..I miss the fifth quarter show…but anyway i don’t know how the season will go, but i worry that recruiting is going to take a big hit…we have some big time committments and are really working on some others, but the talk is going to get nasty on the radio shows and in the paper and i’m afraid if the recruits think Coach Richt will not be there, then we will lose many of them…I am thru defending Coach Bobo….we need a OC in here, keep Coach Bobo as QB coach, but get a OC in here…I know he has not had a full alottment of starters and of course AJ bing out does not help him..I also know that it is not his fault for the fumbles and penalties either, but the playcalling is too predictable most of the time…I believe it is time for a change…As far as the defense, i have been disappointed in what i see, it may be we just do not have the right players to run the 3-4…I think Coach Grantham will be fine, but our secondary does not seem to be able to cover receivers at all…and the most discouraging thing with the defense tonight was even though we knew they were going to run the ball, we had no answer for that..Coach Richt looked like as down as i have ever seen him…I know he wants nothing but the best for the dawgs, but right now, nothing, and i mean nothing is working…If i were Coach Richt i would take over the playcalling…may not change anything, but its his team, and i would want to be doing all that i could to make some things happen…We still do not get our tight ends involved in the game as much as i would like, but some of that has to do with what the defense is taking away from us…One final thought…there is a fantastic RB in South Ga that we are recruiting heavily…and from what i have seen and been told about this young man, he would and could have an immediate impact on our offense…Our other RB’s appear to be average at best….I don’t know what happened to the RB’s we saw in the Tech win last season…maybe it truly was just a very lousy Tech defense…go dawgs, i am still with you, just frustrated right now as i know the team is…

If Richt waits til the end of the year like last year to make changes then I hate to say it, but he needs to go! I’m tired of the BS! This is GA football and GA football doesn’t lose to SC, ARK and Miss State! Just doesn’t happen! Its time for a change and its time a change now not at the end of the season being lucky to go to a “who gives a crap” bowl game in early December! We have a new AD and he needs to step in!! No SEC Championship in a long time and still no where even close to a National Championship! I’m not OK with just getting to Atlanta in early December! With all the talent in GA there is no reason why UGA should not be racking up championship after championship! Look at the majority of the Alabama team… Most come from GA!

Show some support for our team, our community, and for our HC. We are privileged to have him. He has one of the best records over the past decade in the NCAA and has proven that he can take care of business. We all go through times when we are tested and this is no doubt one of those times for CMR and the Dawgs, but I believe that this terrible start to the season will serve as a much needed wakeup call for our head coach and his boys, and that we will see a CMR and a Bulldog team that is driven, physical, and has something to prove in the games to follow.

I’m just saying give the man a chance to work the kinks out. We have a true freshman QB who is learning from every single play of every single game, a new DC with a completely new defensive scheme for us, and our star receiver hasn’t played in a single game this season. I’m not making excuses, I’m just saying…we are still rounding the edges out.

With the way Durham has looked over the past two games, and with Green back next week, we will have some nice depth with the passing game. And once Bobo is gone, which he almost assuredly will be before next season, our running game will be another step in the right direction as well. Just give it some time.

Hey Stick with Richt…I have aloways been a big Coach Richt supporter, but when does the time come that we say it just ain’t getting done anymore…I know we have an outstanding recruiting class it appears and if a certain RB would commit, i believe he would be a piece of the puzzle that we need…Our RB’s are just not getting it done and not just because of the O-line problems..i know it all starts up there…but how many tackles do they break, very few…they are average backs at best…..we need a game breaker that can keep the defense a little nervous…What has happened to the use of the tight ends…there are so many problems with this team as i see it right now, and i just don’t know if the current coaching staff can turn them around…but i am a true dawg fan so i will support them and be behind them the rest of the season…but what happens at seasons end…what if it doesn’t turn around..I hope Coach Richt will take over the play calling, may not change anything, but something on offense has to change…maybe it was alot of people say, we just don’t have the talent that everyone thought…i don’t know…go dawgs…

I too believe CMR is a good man, to much to a fault, he has got to get rid of bobo, or it will be to late to save his own job. Same with willie, he waited to long. He showed a little more spunk on the sideline than usual, but he should have went over, smacked bobo in the head and told him to get his sorry no play calling a$$ off the field. Play the kids that really want to play for the rest of the season, sit down the scared to hit prima-donnas, and get rid of the clowns that make the STUPID penalites! If you show you care, and figure this out after you “reflect”, maybe you can salvage something of the season, if not maybe the new AD can show you the door. Yes i am loyal through and through and i will not quit on the dawgs, but dang, something really needs to change and i am falling to the other side of the fence…in other words tired of defending these nonchalant coaches and players!

You people on here wanting a non proven assistant to coach our dawgs are nuts! Also i feel quite sure these WAC, MAC, or whatever lower tier conferences these coaches you also want do not have to face SEC talent week in and week out, look beyond right in front of your faces. We need someone proven…but as hard as i am on him, who has a better ecord than RICHT, that we could get? Richt needs to take care of the problems with his assistants, and just get another grip on the program. I still hurt from the goff years, and i i really think Richt will right the ship NOW or we may just get another coach and we may not be happy with the results, i myself even need to calm down and….oh ya….reflect

Our defense let them convert too many 3rd down situations. Several times on 2nd and 9, we called running plays that got 1 yard or no gain, putting pressure on Murray to convert 3 and 9. He did a good job, but no QB can do that consistently.

I was glad to see caleb king come back,he didn’t get many carries though.Being the 84th team in the NCAA in rushing we need all the help we can get.Why in the world would they moved Tony Ball from RB coach to WR coach this year anyway. He was a really good RB coach,he played RB at UTC.Bryan McClendon took over for tony ball and bryan played WR at UGA makes no sense.Bad choices are being made as far as coaches go.My concern is what happens to Tony Ball or Rodney Garner or even Stacy Searels if CMR gets fired. Those first two coaches we can’t lose,I know our OL has not been great, but I believe stacy is a good coach from his good OL he has had at UGA in the past and other places he has been.I’m not saying don’t get rid of Richt,I think he drug the wille thing out way to long and should have been fired with wille. As far as BOBO goes,I like BOBO.I think if we can get the running game going then we can get the passing game to open up.Think about it who called the plays before BOBO,it was CMR right,he was the one who also gave up play calling to BOBO.So why would UGA have to go out and get some great OC to replace Bobo when Richt has been a OC and has called the plays at UGA.I can’t blame CMR for the defence because he didn’t play or coach that side of the ball, but offence is diffrent he played it and coached it.CMR needs to take some blame too.I Think he needs to roll up his sleaves and go to work with BOBO to see what they can do too get this offence going, instead of CMR stepping back from the problem and not trying to get it solved. We’ve had some really good offences under Mike Bobo,so we need to find out what the problem is.We know our defence isn’t going to do anything, so the offence has to get going so it can carry the load just like every year accept CMR gave this DC 800,000 a year. One more thing why is UGA going up to NJ and else where to recruit players, and not recruiting players in GA that play the same position.Leave the NJ running back alone and make sure you get Isaiah Crowell.(I know their after Isaiah supposably,we’ve heard the before, and saw GA players go elsewhere, their are other players UGA is not after in GA and instead are in other states looking.)Why don’t we go after these players and get them at UGA, Nick Saban, and urben meyer and others get thier guys, why can’t we put a fence around GA recruits and have the goal no other School can have them and compete for these players and get them at UGA.Georgia High school plays who have come in to UGA are the ones that have put UGA on the map.CMR has to get the GA players, because if he doesn’t other teams in the sec and other schools will.I’ll be glad to see either the coach from Oregon or the coach from Boise State coaching at UGA.Go Dawgs
