Read all about it: Complete coverage of UGA’s loss to Mississippi State

A Sunday morning roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s loss to Mississippi State:

My game story, which notes the Bulldogs are on their first three-game losing streak in 20 years:

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Bad turned to worse — much worse — for Georgia’s football team here Saturday night.

The Bulldogs lost their third consecutive game in an already ugly season, failing to score a touchdown until it was too late to matter and falling to Mississippi State 24-12.

The loss was Georgia’s first in Starkville since 1951 and first anywhere to Mississippi State since 1974, and it gave the Bulldogs (1-3, 0-3 SEC) their first three-game losing streak since 1990 and first 0-3 SEC record since 1993.

Jeff Schultz’s column, which notes the Dogs are 2-7 in their past nine SEC games:

… The Bulldogs are 0-3 in the SEC. They stand alone in the conference in that regard. Behind Mississippi State, behind Vanderbilt, behind the schools you used to joke about. They are no longer the team that can beat everybody except Alabama and Florida. They are the team that can lose to every team well below Alabama and Florida.

… This is about more than one assistant coach or one suspended player. Once again, Richt did not have his team ready to play. The Dogs should have played desperate. They didn’t. They certainly didn’t play smart or play well.

Paul Jones’ sidebar on Washaun Ealey’s latest goal-line debacle, which kept the Bulldogs from scoring a first-quarter touchdown:

STARKVILLE, Miss. — This time, Washaun Ealey’s fumble into the opponent’s end zone came in the first quarter. It was the second time that situation arose for Georgia’s sophomore tailback, and as in the South Carolina game, it was a critical play.

My notebook, which covers the return of a number of players from injury, the continued absence of A.J. Green, the cowbells and this nugget:

Georgia has more former players currently serving as captains of NFL teams than any other school.

That’s according to a report by the Dallas Morning News, which counted the colleges of the 124 players who were elected full-season captains by votes of their teammates on 26 NFL teams.

. . . “We have a great coach, a great leader at Georgia [in Mark Richt],” Matthew Stafford, a Detroit Lions captain, told the Dallas paper. “It probably rubs off on us.”

Transcript of Mark Richt’s post-game news conference, including this comment:

“But we’ve also got to look within, starting with me, as to the things that have kept us from having the success that we want. That’s what we’re going to do.”

And a photo gallery from the game, including this shot:

one of the worst performances for the dawgs in a very long time. Ealey needs to be benched. All he had to do was reach out and put his hand on the ball in the endzone. The offensive line may have a wealth of experience but they ain’t very good!! Only bright spots, Murray and Durham. Bench the rest.

As a two-time graduate of UGA, I find myself pulling for Auburn each week. They are playing with passion. Also, I bought an orange Florida knit shirt at Publix yesterday. For real. Are you hearing me, Mike Adams? Where is the passion…the passion exhibited by Coach Erk Russell? This calm demeanor crap is driving me crazy.

It’s bad karma. Ever since the Dawgs rushed on the field after the TD against UF in 2007 it’s been downhill. A small lack of discipline goes a long way.

Coach Richt stays. Keeps revamping the staff. Starting this week,
Coach Bobo becomes QB Coach. Coach Richt assumes OC role. The 3-4,
is it too complicated or do we not have the right personnel as some suggest?

Something’s gotta give. In the earlier games, Murray played well enough for us to win but was failed by the rest of the offense. It is clear that they don’t believe in him. Either they need to come together as a team or we need to start playing Mason. I would prefer that they get with the program because I do believe that Murray could be a star in the SEC. I still think that LeMay pulls a Da’Rick on us even though he must be smiling along with his dad while watching UGA.

JB…..I have said for the last 3 years that when I watch Richt, he gives out signals that he really doesn’t want to be here. He is not a true Dawg fan in his bones. He will always have a connection to the state of Florida and I believe that he sincerely wants to go back there. I think he took the UGA job to be able to say he had some head coaching experience and always intended to go back……to FSU or Miami. He coaches as if he is homesick and just wants the time to pass quickly so he can get on back to Florida. This team has his personality and demeanor. Richt doesn’t have a firey bone in his body. He is incapable of firing up a team. The coaching of this team shows ineptitude all around. It’s sad.

Great loss in Starkville last night! As much as i love GT, I really enjoy seeing the Dawgs lose more than Tech winning. The Ga and Tech game this year will mean nothing-just two losers trying to give the game away. But will say that Nesbit at GT deserves better. He is a grown MAN> Will some loser Dawg fan now tell us that the Dawgs are still in the hunt. They may not win a game this year in conference. Green should be given his walking papers. As much as i enjoy seeing the rednecks lose,Ga could have won all three games if he had been on the field. Now four games into the season, the season is OVER. Suck it up and get over it. Does anybody have any Tech and Georgia tickets for sale. Get ready for another ass whipping in JAX this year. This is soooo great. this makes up for every nuance in my life this year.

For the first time in 15 years, I walked away from watching the Dawgs before the game was over. This is sickening, Murray is a star in the making. Durham is a good receiver. Every loss this year I have witnessed Ealey involved in a play either fumbling away the momentum (TDs), or missing a critical block (Arkansas game). We may not lose another game with the return of Green, but so far, this is sickening,

There is a saying that if you keep doing the same thing you will get the same result. Georgia’s offensive scheme worked great for FSU ok for a while for Georgia. Coach Richt needs to change with the times and spread the offense across the field. I want Georgia to hire Mike Leach as the OC.

A team that cannot be controlled off the field, can’t be controlled on the field. A one game suspension for criminal conduct is an example of weak ladership. A.J. Green would never have sold his jeresy if he had known he would be punished by the coaches and the university. It took the NCAA to do the right thing.

Richt is an excellent coach and a fine man. Get off his back. Don’t forget he loses player’s early who go to the NFL. That hurts the current team. The staff does need to quit signing criminal type players. A coach can’t spend time rebuilding the character of a player who has had 18 yrs. of rearing in the wrong way. He can only try and many of the athletes coming in are self-centered and are not the most receptive to learning new things. By the way, MSU is on the up swing with coach Mullen in his 2nd year. MSU lost to Auburn and LSU, two top 20 teams so they are NO slouch. They are getting better each week.

I can live with losing games IF our players are men of character. But losing games AND having thugs and (let’s be honest with ourselves), not very bright kids as players should not be acceptable to CMR, McGarrity, Adams or Bulldog supporters. CMR is a nice guy who just doesn’t get it. Must be his FSU upbringing that trained him to get 5-star athletes who aren’t very bright and can’t learn new systems and, by the way, can’t stay out of trouble. I would rather have a team of classy, smart players and be 0-4 than to have this current roster and be 1-3 with 10 arrests.

I have supported CMR since he has been there. He has lost the team. I thought the DC move last
year was the answer. Not so much. I never thought I would say this, but CMR may have to go. He cant keep his players out of trouble, cant get those that are not suspended ready to play, UGA does not lose to Miss State. UGA has one of the weakiest schedules in a while, perfect for a year
you are somewhat rebuilding. You cant tell me the atheletes are not there, they are, the coaching staff just cant get it out of them. I predict that Bobo will either be demoted to QB coach, or fired this week.

Regarding the starters. Murrey, Durham would keep there jobs, bench the rest on both sides of the ball. I just cant believe how the annoucers talk about how good our O-line is, the are terrible. Just watch them, every play whether pass or run, they stand straight up on the snap. If I see this why cant the coaches, that is why the coaching staff needs a change.

I think you will see Richt make the OC move this week, hoping he can win out (doubtful) to get 8 wins and a bowl. If he does the above he will be around next year. If not the new AD will remove Richt and the end of the season, he will not be fired, the AD will allow him to resign and make it look like it was his decision.

I am a TRUE Dawg Fan. Win or lose, I would still support the Dawgs. But I must say that Coach Richt had better get a lot more assertive with his players, and coaching staff. He has to get very tough on the Coaches, and the players as well. As mush as I am a rivalry with Steve Spurrier, (being anywhere and playing against the Dawgs) I have to admit that Coach Steve Spurrier makes champions out of his players. He also has absolutely no tact when it comes to his players, and his coaching staff. If there is something wrong with either of them, he will definitely make it known to them, and to the public. Last night, against Auburn, he took out Garcia (Quarterback) and benched him. In Garcia’s replacement, he put in a freshman quarterback without any hesitation. You see, Coach Steve Spurrier, says what he means, and he mean what he says. Being quiet and passive with your players and coaching staff and not holding each and everyone them accountable for their actions and performance, in unacceptable and it will get you in the hot seat to be fired. Coach Richt appears as if he does not have control of his players, and the entire team. Coach Mark Richt had better wake up and get total control of his players and coaching staff. If the players are not performing up to his potential, Coach Mark Richt have a duty, and a responsibility as a Head Football Coach to bench that player. if your Offensive Coordinator are not performing to your standards, and the team is not responding well to the play calling, then you need to take over the play calling and terminate the Offensive Coordinator. The time is now Coach Mark Richt to take control of your Team before your team and coaching staff take control of you. Food For Thought.

Ten Reasons Why Richt Must Go and Quickly to follow…

Snoop Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:14 pm

Ten Reasons to Fire Marked Wrecked.

1. He has no passion for the game, or for his team. Players are energized by the passion of their coach. Richt has none. A buddha on the sidelines would have more passion.

Snoop Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:15 pm

2. Richt instills no discipline. We lead the SEC in player arrests and penalties. This is a function of the coach. Did you notice Waushaun Ealey break dancing on the field against Ark last week while waiting during a TV timeout for a crucial third down conversion? No we did not convert. Who is responsible: Ealey or the coach?

Mobile Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:15 pm

The symptoms for the disease we have today were being planted years in advance. The body can overcome sickness and still perform until it becomes overwhelming, often terminal. At the least some very bad medicine is in order.

Snoop Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:19 pm

4. Richt cannot recruit. Our recruiting has consistently slipped, and our recruits cannot actually perform. Evidently, Richt is no judge of talent anymore. Let the stats speak for themselves. You could build an all-SEC team from Georgia high school stars now performing for other teams, not UGA.

Mobile Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:19 pm

If we start breaking it down to simple terms, does anyone remember what the Florida Gators were doing the morning after the UGA victory in 2007? It also became the theme of their season in 2008. I believe it was push ups for every yard the defense gave up in that 07 game. Every practice. How could that not leave a lasting impression?

Mobile Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:21 pm

Snoop, you missed #3.

I have to disagree with you on recruiting. I know people say Rivals and Scout aren’t always right, but they are all we have to really judge by other than results. We’ve been top 10 every year I remember.

Snoop Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:23 pm

Mobile Dawg, I believe the Friends of Richt are censoring me.

Snoop Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:25 pm

5. Richt cannot build a coaching staff. Richt hand picked his staff. They are ineffective at best, and clowns by most objective standards.

Snoop Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:25 pm

6. Richt is not good value. We are paying him and the water girl over three million a year. For what?

Snoop Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:26 pm

7. Richt has no backbone. He cannot get rid of his friends that he hires on the staff who cannot perform, nor can he punish or enforce those players who violate team rules. The players obviously do not respect his rules or his power to punish or discipline.
.

Snoop Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:27 pm

8. Richt is not really a beacon of character. A man with honor or character would step down if he could not get the job done and earn his pay. Richt will not step down for the good of the University; rather, we will have to fire him and pay him millions to leave. It will, however, be a bargain because

Snoop Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:28 pm

9. The UGA fan base is no longer motivated or proud enough of the Dawgs to continue buying fan apparel to bring millions each year into Athens’ coffers. In order to restore this valuable source of revenue, we must win and Richt must go.

Snoop Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:28 pm

10. Richt may be a nice man. Someone once said that nice guys finish last. Richt is indeed last in the SEC and patsies are now routinely performing smackdowns of our team and our proud tradiition. If the current generation of Bulldogs want to protect UGA’s 7th best record in the NCAA or improve on it, they will stop calling people like me Haters and put pressure on the AD to fire Richt and get a real ball coach to Athens.

Snoop Dawg

September 26th, 2010
5:31 pm

3. Richt is not really a coach but an imposter. He’s nothing more than a figurehead. The gig is up.

Truth is nothing most of us say here holds any weight. If we knew the real deal we would probably know Richt was pressured into having to fire WM, probably due to fear of losing revenue, or an actual drop off in revenue through supporters and team apparel as you pointed out.

Maybe I’m a bandwagon fan and didn’t realize it. I’m finding myself with no passion at all in general for the games. I didn’t get upset with the loss last night. I honestly expected it. The most surprising thing of all was CMR being so out of character that he actually spoke the words that maybe “he’s part of the problem”. That’s one of the things I most wanted to hear, a public acknowledgement that maybe he needs to change or improve what he does.

Mack Brown is a class guy, inherited a great program at Texas and has continued to keep the program at a high level. First thing out of his mouth after their loss was that “I did a poor job coaching”. It’s taken CMR 5 years to admit that. That’s what gets me passionate at this point, his ineptitude, and lack of responsibility.

Big Dog 98, If Ga is such a class act why do they lead the league in arrest? Oh yea, what about the whole team charging the field to celebrate a touchdown against Fl. You call that class??? I call it poor sportsmanship, a complete lack of discipline and a childish approach to teaching the young men how to become real men and winners.

As many said, discipline, where is it. We kick off a potential red shirt freshman for drinking under age, but we are all anxiously waiting for a star that was only punished by the NCAA for breaking a rule that he knew was wrong just for $1,000. Somehow that seems a lot worse than the freshman’s misbehavior, which is something done by most of the freshman. I am not condoning it but then I also don’t condone AJ’s. I do think he should sit out the rest of the year as recognition of how his actions have harmed the team and the school. Let them the ones who have followed the rules, play the game. He can come back next year if he wants to be a DAWG.

Lemay will not be a Dawg. Bobo and Richt will probably be gone after this horrible season and when that happens most recruits don’t understand that a better coach will be brought in to right the ship. Bobo should have never been given the playcalling duties and for those that want Richt to stay, look at the emotionless team and also Grantham’s demeanor since the SC game. I guess Richt didn’t want him to yell or curse at the players anymore. The program is too timid and it shows on the football field. Murray and Durham have played well but the rest of the team needs to be benched. We need to do a better job of recruiting RB and a meaner type of football player. Sad to keep singing the same song every week, but whether people want to face the fact or not, we need a new regime. It took Bobby Bowden a long time for FSU to start looking bad, but after ten years the UGA program seems to have lost its desire to compete for CMR and I do feel like it is all his fault because he is the captain of this Titanic.

Cullowheedawg you’re an idiot. One player does not make a team and his return won’t change anything due to the incompetent coach that is calling the plays and running the offense. Again, this is Richt’s mess due to his lack of leadership. 3-4 is not hard to learn. Just need the proper personnel and a dictator type HC to manage the program better. St. Richt needs to do more coaching and less preaching on the football field.

I’m not givng up on Richt yet. I can remeber when Ga. fans were happy with a 8 and 4 season under Dooley. I think we might be a little spoiled. Mark is a good coach and will get it straightened out. I would start with taking the play calling back from BoBo. Which I have to admit I’m not used to this either. Come on coach you can do it.

I believe Mark Richt is not the problem. Bobo is. You have to be stupid to not see the plays, run 1st down, run 2nd down, throw 3rd. Duh!!!!!!! Even us girls can figure that out. Richt doesn’t want to be a preacher-he wants to set a good example. He lives what he preaches-do you Snoop Dawg.????? You think a devil worshiper would be a better coach?????

Bobo is PART of the overall problem.
Take a look at the creative play calling by MSU last night- misdirection, bubble screens, quick slants, etc… this is some heady stuff for sure, so maybe it is all over Bobo’s head.
After all, the SEC is NO PLACE to cut your teeth as an OC.

Another part of the overall program, and in my humble opinion is this:
The players are not motivated / geeked up / jacked up / whatever you want to call it. They are not inspired, they are not well prepared.

Boys will be boys. You have to control them, teach them, coach them. Again, its not the players it the coaches. coach Richt is burned out or has some hiddeen personal problem (divorce?). He has lost control. The best for UGA is to fire now, bring in new blood and build for the future. It looks to me like a new coach brought in now would do no worse the Richt is doing. I’m a Tech fan but I feel your pain and want to play a strong UGA team in Nov. The state needs a strong Georgia and a strong Georgia Tech.

This program has arrived at it’s lowest point in the modern era. When you consider all of the alleged talent & the high dollar coaches, one has to wonder how the fans have been suckered into believing the hype!

Remember two weeks ago when UGA lost to S. Carolina? it was because they had the GREATEST freshman running back in the HISTORY of college football ….. WELL, this past Saturday against Auburn, the Greatest freshman running back in the history of college football rushed for 33 yards on 14 carries!!

And then against Arkansas, UGA lost to the BEST quarterback in the country …. WELL, this past weekend, in Fayetteville, before his home crowd, the BEST quarterback in the country blew a 20 – 7 lead with two terrible interceptions!!

Then against the vaunted offense & much feared defense of Mississippi State, UGA gave up 24 points & couldn’t score a touchdown until 1 minute to go in the game! PATHETIC!

This team & organization has pulled the wool over all of our eyes. While the other SEC schools are out getting good players & making them better, UGA is more worried about who is gonna be arrested or suspended! You have a coaching staff that is one of the highest paid in the country & they are producing results that are at the bottom of their league!

People whine & cry that “if we only had AJ Greene, we would be so much better”! YEAH RIGHT!! While he could probably run block, tackle, pass cover & devise better offensive schemes, non of these are included in the roll of wide receiver. Besides, it was his own idiotic actions that got him suspended!

So you fans keep drinking the koolaid & believing that it’s gonna get better! HA HA HA! It’s not.
If it looks like a duck & quacks like a duck & swims like a duck … IT’S A DUCK! This is team(?) that has been over-valued as high schoolers & poorly coached as players by an overpaid coaching staff.

I have attended 121 straight games (home & away). I have never missed a game in the Mark Richt era. I am a DAWG to the core. But, Colorado will be my last road trip with the current regime. I have had alot of great times & suffered through some low times as well. However, through it all, I always had the belief that UGA had a leader to keep the competitive & bring them back. I no longer feel that way.

The problem with this team starts at the top. Richt has had 10 years to have a system in place, recruit the right players, get the right assistants & get this program where it needs to be. Hell, he has $3 million reasons!! But he is not getting it done.

Anyway, you diehards keep on drinking that koolaid they are passing out!! While your at it, get a fresh sheet of paper out to keep tallying up those arrests!

I think that Mark Richt kicking Demetre Baker off the team after one offense was wrong. I know that he is frustrated with the poor showing at Miss State and he fed up with the DUI’’s, etc. but Baker was kicked off the team for doing far less than some of the players that only got suspended for two games..It is a difficult situation but this was his first offense and he is a freshman. Suspend him for 3 games the first time and kick him off the team the second time. We all deserve a second chance.

cmac and you other closet Nerds and Reptiles need to take your hate some where else. You are all hypocrites. I doubt if any of you ever played a single down of football in your pathetic little lives. UGA lost a very close game to Arkansas – and #1 ranked Bama was lucky to escape Arkansas with a win on a couple of questionable calls by the refs. Arkansas dominated Bama for 3 1/2 quarters. Losing after such a great effort to Arkansas took a lot out of Georgia and they played hard the 1st half against Miss State but couldn’t get in the end zone. We are loyal to the Dawgs and Richt and we KNOW that UGA will rebound from this.

ga. chick, I’m calling you out. It’s none of your business what I do or do not do. I am not the head coach of a fabled program in last place in the SEC drawing three million dollars a year.
You are factually incorrect. Mark Richt does not practice what he preaches. He is a slickster of the first order. He cannot coach, manage, discipline, motivate, or lead his players or coaching staff to the performance standards expected of the Bulldog Nation. UGA is the 7th best football program in NCAA history. It is disappointing that so many Dawg fans seem to be intoxicated by da Preacha Man’s sweet elixir of Koolaid. If the fan base does not demand results, you need to stay intoxicated because the Dawgs will lose until we hire a real ball coach. How many SEC teams would trade their coach for Markt Richt? Answer: None of them…

I weigh in like cmac…I have always, until now, given Coach Richt a “pass” becasue I believe he is a fine man with a good value system. I would be happy to have my son play for such a man. However, my son is not the same quality individual that many of the current Dawgs are. The current dawgs are recruited, it seems, mostly based on talent. Talent without character in many instances. The most recent arrest (assuming there has not been one today) is an example. Richt is also trying to make an example of the player. I am willing to bet that they have already discovered that the kid is not as he seemed from a football perspective, so they can throw him out and try to make a statement. A real statement would be to send AJ packing…however far $1000 will take him. Compliance officvers make it very clear what you can and can not do, and in his case the “agent” designation has nothing to do with the suspension or transgression. Richt looks disinterested, as do his players. Football is an emotional, violent game. Once on the field, it is very difficult to raise the level of excitment or emotion. The Dawgs are consistantly not prepared for the games they play.

Time for a new “Head Dawg” I an sorry to say. I wish Coach Richt and his family the very best, but believe we would be better off chasing the rest of the SEC with a different type of leader.

I will not get off Coach Richt’s back! He should have better control of his players. He’s the coach, he needs to bring some discipline to his team. They run amok and he seems to care less. If he is homesick for Florida, as has been stated by some here, then he needs to get back to Florida. What was he doing here anyway, if he loves Florida so much? He has done a great job in the past, but was it just luck and good players? Who knows? I say it is time for a change in the coaching staff for UGA. I hate the way things are looking now. I used to proud to be a Bulldog fan, but not any longer. ROLL TIDE!!!!

We are looking at 4-4 or 5-3 heading to Jacksonville.

I thought we had a shot to hang with the gators and maybe pull one out hoping that the defense would get better by the end of the year.

now I say, just keep it respectable.

We can win the next one.
then go to auburn and watch Newton break the streak.
Then watch Tech run it down our throats while Murray plays Eric Zeier and tries to score enough to offset the defense.

Murray=Zeier

We have to stop recruiting morons like Ealey. We have to start doing what happened to Baker to all the players, regardless of year, playing status, ability etc.

Bobo must be fired.

Richt has to go back to calling plays and take this team over.

If he is not willing to do that, then he should leave too.

I’m hoping he is willing.
