Notebook: King’s return, Green’s absence and, oh yes, cowbells

For a complete roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s loss to Mississippi State, please click here.

(Updated 11:45 p.m.)

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Georgia got a number of players back on the field from injuries Saturday night.

Tailback Caleb King, who had missed the previous 2 ½ games with a sprained right ankle, entered the game against Mississippi State late in the first quarter.

He was the third Georgia tailback into the game, following starter Washaun Ealey and Carlton Thomas. King entered the game on Georgia’s next possession after a goal-line fumble by Ealey thwarted a scoring opportunity. King broke free for a 12-yard gain on his first play since the season opener, but that proved to be the highlight of his night. He finished with 23 yards on nine carries.

Meanwhile, Branden Smith, Shaun Chapas and Marcus Dowtin returned to action after missing the previous game with a concussion, sprained ankle and shoulder stinger, respectively.

Smith started Saturday at cornerback. Chapas entered at fullback, in relief of Fred Munzenmaier, on the first play of the second quarter. And Dowtin came into the game at linebacker early in the second quarter.

Football games here have a unique sound: cowbells.

Before Saturday night’s game, messages played on Davis Wade Stadium’s video board, imploring fans to “respect the bell” and “ring responsibly.”

The SEC has a rule against artificial noisemakers, but the league in June passed an exception on a one-year trial basis to officially allow Mississippi State fans to continue their decades-old tradition of ringing cowbells. The catch is that the bells are supposed to be rung only at certain times -– pregame, between quarters, halftime and after MSU touchdowns. The school will be fined by the conference for violations of the policy.

Early-arriving fans started ringing the bells two hours before kickoff Saturday. During the game, the upper right corner of the video board offered a constant reminder of whether it was time to “ring” or “yell.”

++++++++++

Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green was not allowed under NCAA rules to accompany the team to Mississippi State. He was serving the final game of his suspension for selling his Independence Bowl jersey to a person the NCAA considers an agent, former North Carolina football player Chris Hawkins. Green is scheduled to return to action next Saturday at Colorado.

He has played in only two of Georgia’s past nine games, missing three of the final five last season because of lung and shoulder injuries and the first four this season because of the suspension. In one of the games Green played late last season, he left with a shoulder injury early in the second quarter against Auburn. So his only full game out of Georgia’s past nine was the Independence Bowl victory over Texas A&M.

++++++++++

Georgia has more former players currently serving as captains of NFL teams than any other school.

That’s according to this report by the Dallas Morning News, which counted the colleges of the 124 players who were elected full-season captains by votes of their teammates on 26 NFL teams. The other six NFL teams have captains appointed weekly by their coaches.

Six of the 124 permanent captains are former Georgia players: Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward, Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey, Saints offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb, Bills defensive tackle Marcus Stroud and Panthers kicker John Kasay.

Stafford was quoted by the Dallas paper as attributing his captaincy to this: “We have a great coach, a great leader at Georgia [in Mark Richt]. It probably rubs off on us.”

++++++++++

Davis Wade Stadium is the nation’s second oldest Division I-A on-campus football stadium. It was built in 1914, making it one year younger than Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium. But Mississippi State’s old stadium has a new-age feature the largest high-definition video board in the SEC and the second largest (behind Texas’) in college football. The screen is 111 feet wide by 47 feet high. In square footage, it is slightly smaller than Turner Field’s video board.

I just wanna puk ! Congrats to CMR for putting us in the cellar, what a stellar effort you’ve done for UGA coach. thanks a lot. don’t know what it’s going to take to turn things around coach , but I don’t think you’ve got that one in your bag. Fire Bobo,he’s in too deep for the task at hand. I think Georgia, based on the performances i’ve seen so far, will be doing well to win 4 games this season.

boWeevil – Man lighten up some tonight. 2-7 in the last 9 games is no where near the worst record in football. You made a moronic comment and got called out on it. Come on Mr, “I’ve been posting on here for 3 years”. it is so much fun getting people like you stirred up. Still waiting on true facts about the worst record in college football versus Richt’s during let’s say the last two years.

Mutts should not lose more than 3 more rest of way. UF will spank ya’ll again. Auburn and Tech will be good games. Could be 6-6, could be 8-4. Breaking in a freshman QB is not always as easy as it was with Green. But what the heck has happened to ya’ll O-line???

I need your input on this. Doesn’t it seem like ever since Mark Richt kept apologizing for the celebration when we be Florida the dogs have been neutered? Vince Dooley never would have apologized. What can we do to get to Tommy Tubberville from Texas Tech? We need a coach with some balls. He never apologized for kicking the crap out of the GAYTORS. The Richt era has come and gone. Todd Grantham is the second coming of Willie Martinez and my 4 year old daughter who lives in England and knows more about the European version of football can call a better offensive game than Mike Bobo. I know Richt is a Christian and believes in the Lord. I get it. But we need a football coach not a preacher. I hope they buried Erk Russell (may he rest in peace) at the pet cemetery because he needs to be resurrected. I am sick to my damn stomach. Mark Richt has got to go.

okay time’s up. the best name for a new coach to replace Richt was Harbaugh. Runs a west coast offense against teams that have very slow team speed. Kirby Smart is always going to be Satan’s I mean Saban’s yes man. Will never take the step away from security of Saban to be a HC. Muschamp. Drank the kool aid that he will be the next head coach at Texas when Brown retires in 20 years. let’s see, Texas, No. 7, got beat by UCLA at Texas today. And the score was 34 -12. Muschamp’s defense look really good today against a team that was beat 35-0 a few weeks back. So people, the choices that are out there right now are not to good. Be careful what you wish for you just might get it then you could be much worse off! that being said, I’m outta here tonight.

Yes change needs to come soon!!! We have recruiting and NEXT year to worry about now……damn we may loose to Tennessee!! This is beyond bad….It may be obvious to say…but I believe talent has carried this program for a long time(Stafford and Moreno!).

Anyone remember the Bama game from two years ago!? That is the problem….they didn’t come out to play! They were not fired up or prepared! That is the problem…as well as getting thugs and yer average dumb arses…they are not coached. CMR needs to be worried!!!!

All the fire in this team burned out in 2007. Harbaugh is a damn good choice. Like I said earlier, we need a coach that can breath some fire in this team. I have more confidence in Georgia State who I think will be fighting for a national championship in a few years and this is their first year ever playing football.

Richt lost my respect and control of the team YEARS ago. It all started in ‘07 when UGA played Auburn and players were allowed to do that stupid “Superman” dance while on the field (did Richt even know what that meant???). UGA fans loved it and thought it was so cute and funny. Well, it was the beginning of the end. I had never seen Richt allow something like that and knew he was started to lose it. So, it serves you right. Let your players do what they want to pander to your fan base and it won’t be long before you’ll be updating your resume. WDE

Why is every team we play more physical than us? Recruits are better? NOPE, wrong answer, think really hard. How about how they are coached. Richt is a finesse guy. That’s the trade mark of his teams, high skills guys. We’ll outscore you and beat you because our recruits are better than yours. We’ll throw it around alot and run just enough. But we don’t want to get down and dirty in the trenches. When is the last time our defense just whooped up on a decent team? Please don’t say Hawaii.You have to think way back don’t you? Anyone watch the Auburn-Clemson game? You won’t see that kind of hitting from a GA team. Last year we had what 5-6 guys make the pros from our defense and still we couldn’t stop anybody. Grantham obviously needs a different type player to play the defense he runs. My guess is more physical, less touchy feely.

You are absolutely correct. Richt has lost this team and this program.

Your SENIOR center takes a cheap shot at a player – he should be dismissed.
There is no discipline whatsoever. The program appears to be without a dirver at the wheel at the moment.

The last time I visited Athens you guys showed us MState fans very warm hospitality (other than the whipping your Dawgs put on ours). I did all I could to be very hospitable to the UGA fans tonight. South Carolina fans were pretty easy going as well when I last visited Columbia. I will be damned if I ever set foot on the Florida campus again…LSU as well. Two of the biggest bunch of jackasses I’ve ever seen. I won’t start on Ole Miss. What makes Oxford tolerable is we actually beat them a good bit. I’ve been reading some of the UGA comments and most of you are true when you say you lost to a bad team tonight. MState is an improved team from the past few years but still will have to fight hard to get the required 6 wins for a bowl game. I will tell you Georgia fans how bad it has gotten for you guys. A friend of mine who happens to be an Ole Miss student called me right after the game tonight and said MState has nothing to be proud of by beating Georgia. Now let me tell you… If Ole Miss being as HORRIBLE as they are can make the statement “beating UGA is nothing to be proud of”…. IT has gotten bad in Athens. Anyway…good game tonight UGA. Hope we find a way to beat you guys again before another 34 years passes. Be careful headed home.

UGA is not the worst team in the league even if the record shows it. Just wait until next year when Crowell is ripping off the long TD runs and you faithless “dawg” fans will try to get back on the bandwagon. As UGA fans your judgment rivals that of the idiots that voted in our inept President H. Obama. Just kidding no real dawg fan would have voted for that educated idiot unless you are an idiot. They will not want to be part of a footbal program that is in as much turmoil as this one is. You couldn’t blame the recruits who have already given verbals to switch before signing day in Feb 2011. He’s given UGA 2 SEC titles and over 90 w’s in the last 10 years. No doubt he’s feeling the pressure. I believe it depends upon the number of w’s this year. Although, the powers to be may give him another year to turn it around. However, I’m not sure it will do any good. Good luck to the Miss. Bulldogs. I’m not sure CMR is the problem. He is just to loyat to Bobo. Bobo has five kids under five years old I think. Big time college offensive coordinator needs to spend a lot of hours turning around a crappy offence. This guy Bobo needs and should spend time with his family. He cannot give both the effort needed. Let’s face it, the defense is not great, but those guys need the offense to give them more than field goals. It is possible we could gon thru the season with only 5 wins.

[...] My notebook, which covers the return of a number of players from injury, the continued absence of A.J. Green, the cowbells and this nugget: Georgia has more former players currently serving as captains of NFL teams than any other school. [...]

Cobra, if you’re going to write a threatening letter to the AD and have it taken seriously, you might want to learn to spell LOSE correctly. Also, this Mississippi State team isn’t “horrible” or a “high school team” as a couple people have said. I think all of you will realize this as the season progresses even though you should already. And whoever was dogging Murray, you’re an idiot. He can sling it and he has the balls to take a couple hits when he’s trying to run for a first down. And he’s a friggin freshman QB playing in the SEC!
