Miss. State coach recruited Murray for Gators (and lots more notes)

Cleaning out the notebook before heading to Starkville:

  • If Dan Mullen, the Mississippi State coach and former Florida offensive coordinator, had gotten  his way, Aaron Murray would be a Gator. Mullen said this week that he has known Murray since the UGA QB was a freshman at Plant High School in Tampa. That’s when Murray came on the Gators’ recruiting radar.

“Watching him develop now,” Mullen said, “you see a guy who has a lot of talent,  has a very, very strong arm and has the athletic ability to improvise and get himself out of trouble and make plays with his legs.”

  • One day this week, Kris Durham was wearing the gear of two of pro sports’ losingest franchises — a Detroit Lions T-shirt and a Kansas City Royals cap. There’s an explanation. Durham’s former roommate is Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, and his brother-in-law is Royals relief pitcher Blake Wood.
  • On the practice field early this week, defensive backs coach Scott Lakatos was heard reminding his players, loudly: “380! You gave up 380 [passing] yards last game!”
  • Georgia and Mississippi State are the only teams that are 0-2 in the SEC. The other teams that have played two conference games are LSU (2-0) and Vanderbilt (1-1).
  • It has been 20 years since Georgia lost three games in a row.
  • Georgia was on a two-game losing streak the last time it played Mississippi State, too. Georgia won 27-24 on Oct. 21, 2006, in Athens as freshman Stafford threw two TD passes and defensive end Charles Johnson stripped the ball from MSU QB Michael Henig at the UGA 23 in the final seconds.
  • Georgia opponents have committed only one turnover the past two weeks. Mississippi State committed five against LSU last week.
  • Akeem Dent said  he doesn’t get over a loss “till I get the next win. . . . You have a nasty taste in your mouth until you get the next victory.”
  • Georgia players will get to do something Saturday they haven’t been able to do before any game this season: sleep in a bit.  It’s the Bulldogs’ first night game of the season.
  • Surprised that, after three games, Rantavious Wooten has only two catches for 14 yards.
  • Saturday night’s game will be played in the nation’s second oldest Division I-A on-campus football stadium. Mississippi State’s Davis Wade Stadium was built in 1914, making it one year younger than Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium. “We are going,” Mark Richt said, “to the home of the cowbells.”

Joe, nice post @ 3:55. I say the kids are still playing hard, they don’t quit, and that they are even more disappointed than us about the losses. CMR is still the coach to lead the team back to a nice finish to the season. Maybe Arky and SC are for real this year. We will find out a lot this Saturday. Glad we have two SEC games under our belts. It will be a tremendous help down the line.

gdawginkalamzoo, You need to take Mark Richt’s member out of your mouth. Now, take a deep breath and open your brain.
UGA is the big deal, not CMR. I want UGA to have a great football program. I am not concerned abour CMR. This coach has had around 10 years and we are going backwards. UGA is being laughed at. We are the butt of jokes. Blackouts, black helmets. Losses to inferior teams.
CMR is an experiment gone terribly wrong. UGA fans and alumni deserve better.

Time for a new regime. Richt’s record has been very so so for the last 5 years. Now, I count wins vs Florida, Auburn, GT and Tennessee and LSU when they are on the schedule, along with Alabama.

Too many blow outs to these teams. Tennesse should not have blown us out at home two years back but they did, as the wheels fell of the UGA wagon that day. Last year they did it again. Same with Florida and Alabama, a couple of years back. The SEC has passed Mark Richt by. Too rugged for his nes style it is. Period.

NO, it is time for a change. As a UGA grad. I have had enough. Tons and tons of my friends are also UGA grads and they agree. A 9-3 Outback or a Chic Fil A season will not cut it. SEC East will. Sorry, that is the way it is.

McGarity is looking and thinking and last year’s ugly record coupled with the one that we have so far, show a very bad trend in the SEC ………….. McGarity will not allow that to roll along into 2011. At a minimum for 2011 ………..RIcht will have to dump most of his O coaches, I suspect.

Go Dogs.

As a tech fan that watches all of UGA’s games as well, honestly what do you all expect?…
1.) Inexperienced quarterback
2.) Underachieving (so far) OL play
3.) new defensive scheme
4.) Starting the season playing two really good football teams
5.) A back in Ealey that can’t pass block to save his life.
6.) No AJ Greene( best receiver in the country)

Miss State is nowhere near what you guys saw last week. I think you guys handle them easily winning by at least 10 and roll into Gainsville 6-2 with some good momentum. I know it sucks now( I literally almost cried when we lost to Kansas) but you are better than your next 5 opponents and should beat all of those teams. Oh and Tax Jacket or whatever your screen name is, posting a score from two years ago on a UGA blog when they beat us last year makes you and I and tech fans in general look like complete tools. Give it up bro.

LowcountryBulldawg….

What kind of post is this:

“If you didn’t have playmakers on D and Jeff Demps you boys would be in a little trouble.” The Gators DO HAVE THEM…..DUH!! Sort of like….”If Florida didn’t have good players, they wouldn’t be any good.” Sorry…but they do! Georgia doesn’t have Florida’s playmakers on D and Jeff Demps…if you did….you wouldn’t be 1-2…you’d probably be 3-0. Plus…the Gators have Meyer and you have Richt….DUH!!!

Also…..Brantley has done just fine when he has received a good center snap. His passing stats are good. 4 Td passes and no interceptions in 3 games even with the center snap problems. I am expecting an even better performance from him this weekend now that all the starting offensive linemen (Nixon back at LT, Gilbert back to RT, Hurt back to RG) are back in place and Pouncey is snapping better….plus the receivers are playing much better.

Kentucky is still going to give the Gators all they want and probably more this weekend….the Wildcats are good this year…they might be real good. Right now…they look better than Georgia for sure.

I still need your Dawgs to win this weekend….please. You let me down last weekend. The Gators need the Dawgs to come to Jacksonville with a good record….please. Tell Bobo to become a genius OC. Tell your DC to stop yelling so much and coach ‘em up a little better….and actually do some game day adjustments to help you win. And tell Richt to leave the Bible at home and read the playbook more….please.

Easy does it TampaGator- the Gators have yet to prove a thing this season. Sure they’re better than UGA- so what? They still look like fool’s gold to a lot of the nation. Can they win the SEC East in a down year? Sure. Can they do anything beyond that? Not looking like it so far my friend. They have a lot to prove. Right now, I’m saying Florida loses both the SEC title game and their bowl game.

Not to worry, Georgia should be assured of a bowl game this year. I just saw this on Fos Sports:

Last year, there were 34 bowl games and 71 teams with at least a 6-6 record, leaving the NCAA with a margin of three extra “bowl eligible” teams. This year, with USC ineligible but pinning losses on its Football Bowl Subdivision opponents, there’s a good chance there simply will not be 70 teams with six wins.
The NCAA’s contingency plan for falling short of 70 six-win teams has not been made public, but it’s hardly a secret. The 35 bowl games are guaranteed. If there are only 69 teams with six wins, a 70th team with a 5-7 record is playing in a bowl. Period.

While making a 5-7 team bowl eligible may seem absurd, there is one silver lining: It gives Notre Dame something to do over the holidays.

Wow. A Bama and a Tech fan pump more sunshine into this blog than all the Uggas combined. Makes me feel downright friendly and halfway optimistic.

Still, CMR has to take responsibility for the last 3 years of decline… he could lift all spirits really quickly by implementing BLACK PANTS. Wait… I mean by TAKING OVER THE DAMN PLAY CALLING. At least then he’s done all he could this year and was decisive for once.

I actually wish he hadn’t screwed up the black jerseys by trying them against Alabama. Should have just made it last home game of the year with bowl game optional for seniors. Or if everyone stayed out of jail.

It’s actually kind of amusing to hear Gator fans bragging about winning the SEC East in 2010 when everyone knows it’s a down year for the SEC East. The reality is that the Gators are afraid to make any other claims because they know deep down that their team is fraud on the national stage and can’t compete with the big boys this year. So I guess congrats on being the best of a mediocre division.

Aside from the fact that what Bobo said about Murray was exactly true, he didn’t exactly seek out an opportunity to throw his QB under the bus. He was asked a pointed question, and he responded with pretty guarded words I thought. If he wanted to go after somebody, how about his RB who clearly had no idea what he was supposed to do on that play.

Murray is the starting QB on a SEC team. It’s pretty smart to give him some criticism in a very controlled manner. Soon enough, the kid is going to be taking blame for any and everything the team does. I would be willing to bet that Murray’s parent’s didn’t have a problem with it.
