Georgia has not lost a football game to Mississippi State since 1974. Georgia has not lost in Starkville, Miss., since 1951.
But as of Wednesday night most Vegas sports books had Mississippi State as a 1-point favorite over Georgia in Saturday’s game in Starkville.
These are strange times, indeed, in UGA football.
As you know all too well, Georgia lost at South Carolina for the first time in 10 years and lost to Arkansas for the first time in 17 years and is 0-2 in the SEC for the first time in 17 years.
The next streak on the line is Georgia’s nine consecutive victories over Mississippi State. That streak dates to a 38-14 UGA loss in 1974 in Jackson, Miss.
The schools have played only 21 times in football despite both being charter members of the SEC. They have met only twice since 1997. Georgia leads the series 16-5.
Georgia’s all-time record in Starkville is 4-1, the lone loss a 6-0 defeat in 1951. Georgia won in Starkville in 1982, 1988, 1996 and 2005.
The teams also played three times in Jackson, most recently in 1974. Georgia was 1-2 in those games.

Coaches kill me. they dont read the blogs. But maybe they should.
Because some of the crap that happens in these games you have to wonder how the bloggers can be Nostradamus when it comes to how the coach will waste timeouts, call the same dumb play, or make the same stupid comment to the media. The bloggers scout the Georgia coaches better than the team does.
IF we beat Miss State, it will be because we got some breaks we have not received recently.
Oh and what is up with our return game, we have gotten nothing on kick returns or punt returns and that use to be something we could count on. Seems we are doing more fair catches than ever.
Lets hope we get some better play calling on offense, the line steps up, and the creek dont rise.
And lets get a W.

Dawgs73 – I think CMR has to go 9-3 this year. Will it happen? Not so sure. If the Dawgs end end up having a substandard year ( 500 or less )I think the angry crowd will grow into a mob. He’ll have to dump Bobo at the end of the season to save his position. I’m not for firing him but Bobo has to go away.

Ozzfest,
I hear the argument that Donnan was better than Richt, but I’m not sure I’m buying it. Richt has won with his own recruits has well. Donnan never won an SEC title and lost 3 in a row to Tech even with that great talent, which is just terrible! So no,I’m not going to say that Donnan was the better as a head coach.
Now if you want to make the argument that Donnan was a better RECRUITER than Richt, I think that’s a fair statement. Donnan had legit NFL talent on his roster that Richt benefited from his first few seasons. The caliber on talent on defense now is not even close to where it was 10 years ago with Seymour, Stroud, Champ Bailey etc. And that is a huge knock on Richt and his staff over the last few years.
Also, if you want to say that Richt and Donnan have underachieved with the talent they had, I think that is a fair statement.
But to say that Donnan was better than Richt as a head coach? I’m not so sure. I think both are pretty equal in terms of X’s and O’s, but Richt was a better fit for the UGA job than Donnan, which is why he has been more successful.

13 NATIONAL TITLES – 22 SEC TITLES!!!
Well – I have to admit – I really over estimated UGA this year – and thought there was a good chance to that UGA would be undefeated headed into WLOCP in Jacksonville.
Who would have thought UGA would be irrelevent in the SEC before Fall!!! Not me. I knew SC and ARK would be tough games – but I really believed that UGA would win those games behind stellar offensive line play – an improved defense that would show a few issues here and there as the adjusted to 3-4.
What I saw was UGA totally being outclassed, out performed, out prepared, out coached by SC and ARK. Regardless of how UGA kept the score close in both games – both SC and ARK were clearly better teams.
Forget about the SEC EAST race – and UGA’s chances to win the SEC EAST at this point and focus on trying to win ONE SEC game – and improvement in all phases of the game.
I compare UGA athletic ability to Alabama and Florida – and the difference is HUGE. Heck, SC and ARK looked mor athletic and deeper than UGA.
Again – I really thought UGA was in position to have a very good year – but this team is just not ready mentally and physically – athletically is average and maybe below average as compared to the rest of the SEC.
Last Spring – I predicted UGA regular season to be 10-2 – 9-3 worst, and maybe 11-1 if everything fell into place. I really thought offensively – UGA would come out ready to play. This is not about ONE WR name AJ Green. The entire offense lacks.
I am totally at a total loss with what to expect from this team.
I could easily see UGA go 5-7 or wind up 8-4.
I would like to see UGA successfull becasue I would like to see MARK RICHT successful. He is a great man – and did such an outstanding job at UGA up until a few years ago. – but the something is wrong – the team has slid back into the pack – and UGA is in danger of trading places with the KY’s and SC’s of the world.
Good think Tennessee is basically starting from scratch and UGA does not have to play BAMA or LSU this year. I would not chalk up Tennessee as a win – they have spamnked UGA 3 of the last 4 years with less talent.
Good luck in StarkVegas!

I hate to put a number on Richt’s head, so to speak, but I’d envision that UGA would go at least 8-5 or better with at least improvement at the O-line, D, and just better overall discipline. I would like to think that Richt can make this team fundamentally sound, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen the Dawgs play a clean game. If this team doesn’t show marked improvement here quickly, then this year’s record maybe Richt’s downfall.

Months ago, i made a prediction right here that the pups could very possibly lose to Missy St., because I thought they would be the most improved team in the SEC. They still might lose, because this team is seriously under-coached. They have talent galore, but no heart. CMR has done a fantastic job of coaching them down, just like I have said on many occasions, With that said, I will add that if the offense is this bad just because AJ is not playing, there are more problems than you think. I refer back to LSU in ‘08. Great O-line, untested QB, good running backs, new DC. They went 7-5. I will say this for probably the 50th time… consider 8-4 a GREAT season. I said it months ago, and I still maintain it to be true. Your pups COULD still lose to Missy St., Kty, Fla., Auburn, and GT. That would be a 5-7 record and no bowl. Not saying it will happen, but it would be sweet, I must admit. And by the way, YOU DON’T RUN CRAP ANYMORE.

Lose this one and there are no guarantees against anybody left on the schedule.
If we go to 0-3 in the SEC, CMR is gone unless he can manage to pretty much win out the rest of the way– which ain’t gonna happen.
CMR knows it and we all know it.
This is THE game to begin to right the ship. Lose this one and all hell will break looose.

@theReelDeal – FYI, since it is important to you for some reason, the latest on The Georgia Tech football APR:
“The football team’s score increased for the third consecutive year, reaching 993, the fourth-highest score nationally and tops in the conference, according to the ACC. The team’s multi-year average of 967 is tied for the third-best score among ACC teams, behind Duke and Miami.
The ACC led all conferences for the fourth straight year in APR (962.4 avg.). Seven ACC schools were ranked in the Top 32 including Clemson (tied for 11th with Vanderbilt, 982). Additionally, Duke (19th, 976), Wake Forest (23rd, 974), Virginia (28th, 972), Boston College (971, 30th) and Miami (32nd, 969) were ranked in the Top 32.”

I’ve heard the rumour about Richt being torn between coaching and missionary work way up here in Virginia. And I tend to believe it’s true from the way he acts. I know every coach has his own style, but Richt doesn’t seem to be especially interested in coaching any more. No one chooses Christian mission work as a vocation . . . it’s a calling. And he may be going through some type of internal conflict regarding what to do if he has been truly called. At the very least, he seems to me to be distracted and detached. Look I believe missionary work is a great deal more important than football. But if his convictions are truly at the heart of this, it’s even more reason that he should not be leading our program.

No disrespect meant to MSU here but nothing I’ve seen from it makes me think it has turned any corner. There’s a football adage that says “if you are playing two quarterbacks it means you don’t have one.” That’s what I see in Starkville this year. Georgia wins and probably by double digits.

The previous blog about the meaning of the point spread is right on. Point spreads are directly related to bet distributions. If too much money is placed on any given team, the people who collect the bets try to skew the point spread, hoping to make betting on the other team more attractive. Hey Dog Fans: CMR has the same demeanor today that he displayed when David Greene hit the Hob-Nail-Boot TD play in Knoxville. In that setting, CMR was Joe Cool to the highest exponent. With the current losing streak, when CMR’s patina is a replica of the one he showed in Knoxville, he is criticized. I am no UGA fan, but I like, respect and admire CMR and the job he has done since his arrival in Athens. I don’t believe MSU is capable of defeating UGA. I do believe UGA is capable of losing to MSU.

59,
Makes sense. CMR just doesnt have the drive anymore. You can see it in his actions or lack of.
In this high intensity sport, how can a coach keep from getting excited good plays or bad. Hell, Im jumping up and down, throwing things at home and I’m not even on the field. The players need to see and feel that from their leader. Laid back and calm doesn’t get the job done.
Styles of teams in two leagues
September 23rd, 2010
12:42 pm
On offense, GT is a physical team or at least in the ACC they are. They win there too, usually. This fact helps me make my point about the SEC style of play and UGA. Mark Richt has built a team that has some speed but no bulk. For years that was the 1990s FSU model ………….FSU was a finess team.
UGA today is more like North Carolina or mayne Miami or FSU or Maryland. We are not built to compete in the SEC and that is why now, UGA cannot win even vs the lower echelon SEC teams like MSU or SC or Arkansas. Watch these latter two teams and see where they end up at season’s end. Theya re 8-3 teams …………like UGA used to be under Richt.
Now, UGA has been found out …………you outmuscle UGA and you will very likely win. Richt won initially at UGA because of the speed. Now? That is all over the league PLUS the line play that is very physical.
Why Richt has not adjusted his line recruiting is beyond me and it will cost him his job.Listen to Kevn Butler on the WSB post game and Sunday call in radio broadcast and you will hear him speak often about how “small UGA’s linemen and backers and corner back are”. This is it in a nutshell.

It’s embarrassing Richt has let this program fall into the depths of mediocrity. The next step down is losing seasons. Who would have thought that a program could go from SEC champs to underdogs in Starkvegas under one regime? But then again, it happened with UT. I’ve lost faith in this coaching staff to win championships, what a shame.

I agree with the guys who said that Richt seems to be acting like a zombie or something. It’s true, and it is obvious that his heart is elsewhere right now. Not looking to offend anyone, but you got to watch these ultra religious types because sometimes they get “the calling” and think they are needed more elsewhere. I’ve seen preachers give up great churches and move their family to different States only to preach out of a shack, because they were called by God.

59bulldawg,
I think you might be on to something there. I really don’t think football is a passion of Richt’s anymore. At one point it was, but now it isn’t. I could defintely see Richt in some form of missionary work. I think he’s a great human being, and I think that he would be the kind of coach that would never return to the game if he ever left. If the season doesn’t go well, then I would appreciate it if Richt resigned. I certainly would not hold it against him. Richt’s a family man in a profession that doesn’t always value it. Being a head coach for a major university is stressful, but then again he’s getting paid millions so the trade off is fair IMO. Bottom line Coach: if your passion is football, then let’s turn this thing around! But if it isn’t then get out now! It’s what’s fair for you, the UGA fan base, and the players.
