(Updated 8 p.m.)
ATHENS – After entering the season “as healthy as we’ve been in a long time” — coach Mark Richt’s assessment early this month — Georgia’s football team has seen its injury list grow lengthy in a hurry.
Several key players remain questionable for Saturday’s game at Mississippi State: cornerback-punt returner Branden Smith (concussion), fullback Shaun Chapas (ankle) and offensive guard Chris Davis (knee and hip).
The news is better for Georgia on another key player, tailback Caleb King, who is expected to play Saturday after missing the past 2 ½ games with a sprained right ankle.
“I know 100 percent I’m playing in this game,” King said after practice Tuesday night.
King acknowledged that he thought he would play last week, too. This time, though, running backs coach Bryan McClendon agrees with him.
“He’s definitely going to play,” McClendon said.
Smith, who suffered a concussion in practice early last week, is “getting better,” Richt said, but has not been cleared to resume practice. As with all players who suffer concussions, Smith must pass medical tests before returning to the field.
“We think before the week is over he will have a chance” to practice, said Richt, who added: “Believe me, we will not rush a guy [after a concussion]. There is no way. We’ll be real careful with him.”
Richt and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo expressed hope that Davis and Chapas will be able to play Saturday. However, Davis was riding a stationary bike during Tuesday’s practice, and Chapas was on the field in a green non-contact jersey.

Get used to more and more players for all teams missing games due to concussions. The more we learn about the long term effects of brain injuries, the scarier it gets for these kids. No win is worth anyone’s long term brain health.

Is it just bad luck but seems like year in and year out the dawgs have crucial injuries that are either season ending or that we have the many, many nagging injuries that keep players out especially at key positions…i know this happens at all schools, but the dawgs seem to have a knack for it more often than not…I’m not makinbg an excuse so please don’t accuse me of that, but its just an observation..maybe if we had more depth in some of these positions we wouldn’t notice as much or it wouldn’t affect us as much, but it never seems we are at full speed…Thats i believe is separating us from some of the elite schools such as Bama, Gators…this years recruiting class is so important…so lets stay behind the dawgs throughout the season…

I think it’s fair to say that CMR has to address our strength and conditioning program at seasons end. Everyone has injuries but UGA the past few years has looked small and punie to some of the other rival programs. Also, there is no reason in the world our 300+ pounders should be pushed around like rag dolls as they were the past three games. Also, our linebackers look very undersized as well except Justin Houston.

I know all the stories and I’m disappointed, too. But we have lost to two teams that were ranked in the top 12 in the nation! C’mon, people….I want to win as bad as the other guy, but just because we aren’t undefeated I’m not going to throw in the towel! USCar is going to beat a LOT of people this year and so is Arkansas. We almost beat Arkansas and are getting better, Let’s not act like a bunch of school graders when we have only played 3 games and they may be the two best teams we see all year. Relax, take a pill and watch the rest of the season before passing judgement.

I hate to say it, but CMR seems, to me anyway, to be coaching scared. I don’t care how many plays you have in your playbook, they are worthless if the other team knows what is coming. Time for Richt to go, or get an OC with a brain and some imagination!!

destin dawg, I agree with you. It’s only effective with a fast offensive line who will get down field and create some running room. I’d like to mix in some shotgun earlier in the game too. It was sad having to wait until the 4th quarter to see some shotgun calls… which is more reason why I think Richt was calling plays in the last two quarters. Anyone have any word on what sparked our comeback in the 4th quarter? We went from flat to fire, despite the loss. Hopefully we can put these two games behind us and get back on the winning track against Mississippi State…

Great Danny Ware…I mean Caleb King is back to run 2 yards per carry again. But, given the other option, the fumbling, non-blocking Ealey, This may be good news. Now that I think of it, Ealey has played key roles in both of our losses, not as much as Booboo but still…What would happen if we had a decent running back.

I’ll give King 5 plays before he is hurt again. Once again this is a case of not evaluating talent. UGA should have went after Dwyer. King has not earned his scholarship at UGA. The problem at UGA is strength and conditioning. Once again this is a position where Richt has one of his buddies.

Because we play in the SEC you will always have an issue with injury to the first team. That being a fact I am a 100% advocate of playing Freshmen as soon as they learn enough of the plays. If they are good enough they will leave after their junior year, anyway. So don’t lose a year when you could have gotten help from a player for three years like we did with Moreno. We red shirted him and then he only stayed 2 more years, when he had two more years eligibility.

I think the strength and conditioning program at UGA is outdated, based on what I see on the field. Have you ever noticed CMR’s teams physically look like the FSU teams of the ’90s, finesse and speed. Watch an Alabama game, and Saban has his team looking like an NFL team. They are physically imposing. That is what is required to endure the rigors of SEC play. Georgia consistently has problems keeping guys healthy. Combine the physical stature of this team with its lack of “nastiness” attitude-wise, and it’s no wonder they get punched in the face and wilt like 7 day old lettuce.

I can recall UGA once being known as “Tailback U”. Not sure that CMR or his staff really know what to look for at that position, or do they really care? We have not had a “bruiser” at that position in who knows when. Our guys , if they hit the hole, seem to go down as soon as someone trips them up. We need a power back that give you that always needed 5 to 6 yds. In other words, a Lattimore or Ingram or Richardson type. Surely there some out there that we could have a shot at, but as I said, I don’t think CMR or staff looks for that guy. Like someone else mentioned, we seem to go for the”finesse” type, whatever that is. Like FSU, seems that way to me. Chadd, you are correct, what can we really expect out of King that would make much of a difference?

I think it would be hard for a first year coach that played receiver in college to be an effective RB coach. Someone mentioned Samuel….What a waste of a young athletic player. He is still 19. King is 22, Ealey is 20 will be 21 in June and A.J. Green is 22. But yet Samuel has kept a clean slate and a great academic record. Hope they are smart enough to redshirt him this year.

We have Ealey, who can’t pass block effectively
King, who stays hurt and IMO is a bust
Carlton Thomas- too small to be in there frequently carrying the rock….
Ken Malcome- has a concussion…..was it Ogletree again??
Dontavious Jackson- Kicked off the team
Chapas- injured……and Munzenmeier, who is not a tailback

Very similar to how the other WR’s need Green back in the mix. I think they have stepped up , within thier own game but at this point we don’t have 2 WR that can take the pressure off of each other.

First, let me say I am not one who wants to remove CMR. He is entitled to a few more years to turn this program around… which I think he WILL within the next 2 seasons. But I think you folks lobbying for a new head coach are forgetting a really sharp, young coach who has performed miracles (see USC upset at home 2 years ago), by the name of Jim Harbaugh at Stanford. This is one guy who could turn the UGA program (or any other) into a perennial winner. I’d vote for him before John Gruden or even Kirby Smart (whom I think will never be offered the job due to his rejection of UGA last year).
All that being said, I still believe the Dawgs will go on a run that impresses even the most doubtful antagonists of this coaching staff. GO DAWGS – SIC ‘EM!

We need to recruit kids that have heart, discipline, leadership and work ethic. All these make a good football player. I believe alot of our recruiting comes from combines and recruiting services. I have often wondered if Terry Hoage, a Georgia All-American and 13 NFL veteran, would have been offered a scholarship by his perfromance in a combine. This is just an example of the type of player UGA is lacking. That has been the biggest decline in the program.

All we can talk about is injuries and why we can’t get it together. At some point ole Mark has to be held accountable for his deep funk over the last couple of years. Ever since he started making a couple of million a year, the team has steadily declined in quality. Now we are underdogs to the once also rans of the SEC! It must be nice to be all laid back knocking down about $38,000 a week saying that we are making progress. 1 win against the weak sisters and 2 losses against the former dregs of the conference makes for a bright outlook on the rest of the year. Bring on Idaho State! The home record has been dismal and there are no signs that it will improve….with Richt and Bobo only mediocrity will prevail. If that’s what we want, fine…….perhaps I shouldn’t end with the word fine since it implies something that might be imposed by a court of law.

But he hurts just as much when a hobnail boot is on his face.

Maybe if we could get Furman’s players (or coaches) we could have scored 19 on USC instead of 6.
Maybe we could have held Lattimore to under 100 yards like Furman did instead of letting him run over and through us.
Just face it, we were overated and so is USC…. I think we will find that Arkansas is not that great either, I mean that was their QB’s first Road Win in how long??????
Geesh how the mighty have fallen.
I am embarrased that my dawgs are in last place in our SEC division.

Did anyone see how intense the hitting was in the Aub vs Clemson game last Saturday?
That was an eye-opener because I haven’t seen UGA play with that kind of intensity and fire in a long time. If we keep playing like we’re afraid of our own shadow, the injuries will continue to increase and it’s going to be a LONG season. Where is the “junkyard Dawg” mentality?

I never thought I would see the day when people belittle a man for his Christian belief. Some of the remarks made about CMR are really below the belt. For instance, ” he needs to go find a church and preach.” “maybe he will learn something in Sunday school”. I love college football but UGA winning or loseing a ball game is not gonna affect my life on bit. I would love to see them have good seasons every year, and beat those flapping mouth gators, but it isn’t going to ruin my life if they don’t. COME ON, GET REAL PEOPLE.

Our backs are NOT explosive. Let me repeat that, Georgia’s backs ARE NOT EXPLOSIVE. Has anyone else noticed how long it takes our offense to get it’s sh*t together – at least 6 games? Both issues, are coaching problems, not a personel problem.

Interesting question regarding the “comeback” Saturday. WHy did that occur? What happened to spark that? Did Richt start calling the plays? Or if not, why did Bobo change up the plays and spark the points on the board.
I am proud of this team for not quiting. For fighting back and trying their damnest to win. That fight will go a long way this season.

We all know the deal with Stafford. Big arm, tall, strong and potential as frosh at UGA with basically no results. He lost to GT too. He will soon be a faint memory only. Not a damned good Dog. Sort of like AJ Green will be.
Jumping Joe Cox came to UGA from Independence HS in Charlotte with an equally big …….HS resume. After 45 years ( yes, I said 45 ) on the UGA bench backing up MS and being “mentored” by Richt AND Bobo, lousy horrible results and he had the audacity to get the flu on opening day last fall. He is all but forgotten.
In comes Aaron Murray with one year as the QB understudy and mentoring. He is playing with heart, fight and desire. He might have a bright UGA future if events do not get him down. He has to feel frustated but he needs to keep his head on and get his passes down somewhat ……..3 or 4 TDs have been missed by being under or badly over thrown.
Folks are not really talking about this ………….we have blown three or four TDs in the last two games with under thrown or over thrown balls that SHOULD HAVE BEEN TDs. Three in the SC game would be 21 points. Two or three in the Arkansas game were badly arched or underthrown.
This is what a frosh QB will do. This year is gonna take time for the guy to get his game down. Couple this reality with the lousy attititude of about 65% of the players, it will end up being awful.
We have to just sit and wait it out.
Change will be forthcoming. There is not one offensive coach on that staff worth keeping. Not one. Richt should have dumped them last year. He may not have a chance to, come December.

People that type in all caps on a sport blog must suffer from a limited IQ, which is why no one need any attention to the idiotic things they type.
The Dawgs roster says that Murray is 6-1. My guess would have been 5-10 at best. What can be expected from a red-shirt Freshman, keeping in mind that our likely starting QB got booted off the team?

@TheTaxJacket – The ACC is 17-11 so far this year against other conferences, which is a far cry from winning all of their regular season games, with the many patsies played in these early games. The SEC is 19-3.

Youse guys need more excuses. Both the loses at South Carolina and to Arkansas were caused by the games starting at noon. When you’ve got a hangover you just can’t function that early in the day. If the MissState Bulldogs beat the Red Panties Puppies will Coach Richie Rich come back to Athens or apply for a job with ESPN. That Lou Holtz guy is just too old.

The reason we have so many shoulder injuries is because we do way to much shoulder tackling. It’s a proven fact if you rap the ball carriers feet up he can’t RUN but no that’s not cool in football today. If the first man to the ball would focus on the ball carriers feet we would be 3 and 0 today.

hind tit – if we focus on the feet, we will be in trouble. Focus on the belt and wrap up. I get your point though. We are trying for the Kill Shot (lower shoulder and run into) instead of making a good form tackle. The problem is our D-fense can hit with the Kill Shot against the scout team in practice and look great. This doesn’t translate on to the field.

We had better find a way to get Crowell here. He could start at UGA today. Crowell and Malcom are the real deals. We have a lot of issues. Defense will get better with Granthem. We did not have the best recruiting last year which will hurt- 2011 is a must for the rebuilding that we obviously have to do. Rocky next 2 seasons for the Dawgs.
