‘It was my fault,’ Dogs’ Shawn Williams says

From AJC correspondent Andy Johnston in Athens:

Georgia safety Shawn Williams is shouldering the responsibility for Saturday’s loss.

He missed tackling Arkansas wide receiver Greg Childs at the 25-yard line, and Childs ran into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown with 15 seconds left.

“It was my fault,” Williams said Monday night, following Georgia’s practice. “I missed the tackle.”

Williams played most of the second half, his first extended playing time of the season. He saw the play on game film on Sunday.

“I just had to move on,” Williams said. “There was nothing I could do about it.”

Your missed tackle made the games final score a differance of 4 points. The Missed Block to force a punt, then a bad punt were as big plays as yours. Arkansas was going to get a shot to kick a field goal and win by 3 anyway.

GATA means “Get After Their A–” and based on what I remember, Erk Russell had it stamped on the teams gray Georgia T-Shirts and the letters GATA was placed on the defense units helmets, middle above the eyes, for a GT vs. UGA game in the late 70’s. It stuck and the letters are mentioned today but not sure if it is used around the team.
Some of you that go back before the 70’s may know if it was used then, but I believe Coach Erk was the man behind GATA.

Now this is an impressive young man. I don’t know how well he plays football, but I assume he’s pretty good at that too. Still, the thing that impresses most is his willingness to accept his responsibility for the Hogs’ last score. We all know that this one play didn’t really “lose the game”, but it’s refreshing to see someone who’s disappointed in his own performance. (I should emphasize that it’s a refreshing CHANGE when compared with the Dogs’ coaching staff … none of whom have admitted any responsibility for the outcomes of the last two games.)

The Bulldogs played without Shaun Chapas, Brenden Smith, Caleb King our best Blocking Back, and A.J. Green. We have not has all of our experince on the field in one game this year. Mike BoBo, I think you will call a better game back upstairs in the box or either give the calls back to Mark Richt. The playcalling is extremely vanilla. No mixing it up and playing to your players strength like wooten in the slot catching short passes or letting Murray run the offense from the Shotgun. I mean Dang, by the time he took 5 steps back it was time to throw or he was being hit. Help the Young man out. Every single time he was under center he was throwing with hands in his face and traffic. Am I the only one who saw that.

I totally agree with the other posters in that Mike Bobo and Mark Richt could learn a little something about taking responsibility from this young man. I would have loved to hear something like “We didn’t put our kids in the best position to win the game” from the coaching staff…rather than “Murray holds on to the ball too long” or “If the players aren’t where they are supposed to be they are going to give up big plays.” Our coaches are like politicians: No accountability and only looking out for number 1 (and I don’t mean Branden Smith).

I admire the young man for accepting his part in the loss but the game should not have come down to his error. Two dropped interceptions – very questionable playcalling at crucial times – no running game – other players not executing blocks – etc. etc. We could have just as easily won the last two as lost them – still, I see improvement and heart on this team – it’s time to go on the 10 game win streak.. This is where this team is lacking we don’t have enough akeem dents, arbry jones, christian robinson’s shawn williams, ben jones ( the ones who you could on television playing with passion) and conversely to many washaun ealey’s baccari rambo’s the one’s who should shut up for the rest of season and study the playbook. the latter guys are coach killers Coach Richt doesn’t deserve this. That fouth quarter pep talk was the warrior many say the wish he was.it is sad he has a shortage of warriors on saturdays,(coaches included) what these guys don’t get losing isn’t the main issue here. GA fans are not like Tenn ALA fans in that they don’t think they should ever loose. You can swallow loosing if you play smart, play hard and leave everything on field. Nope…never. 2 years running we have heard nothing but great things from Richt about camp and practices leading up to the games. You would think Joe Cox was David Greene coming into last season! Like the other poster said…he mentions all these people that never show up in games. Now I am not expecting him to poor mouth the players in the press. But at the same time maybe he needs to raise his expectations. If you see greatness everyday in practice, one would think you would see greatness on Saturdays…at least some of the time! Maybe we need to tackle more in practice. You play like you practice…so if you only go to initial contact in practice (not a full tackle) that is exactly what you will do when you are tired in the 4th quarter of a game. If we can’t tackle in practice without everyone getting injured, our strength and conditioning needs work. We are soft and getting softer!

Thank you for taking the 1st step in recovery, ask the rest of the team where they stand! Action speaks LOUDER than words. the real mistake,

Yes we do have some crappy fans like all programs. Fans who turn against the team over a few losses. However, every team does have them and most have the same qualities.

1) most never played sports of any kind
2) most live vicariously thru the team because their lives are so pathetic.
3) some actually played but were pathetic therefore they have to make up for it by trying to be badasses and say they won’t tolerate losing
4) most of these loser fans are inbreeds
5) most have no idea of the hard work and sweat these players go thru

Shawn is one helluva football player and kid. He gives 100% on every play and busts his butt off the field as well. Look at the big hits we’ve seen on ST’s this year……Shawn’s delivered every single one of them. There was one play Saturday in which he fell attempting to make a tackle, got up, ran down field and ended up making the tackle. That’s the kind of effort this kid gives.

On that final play, we were out of position which led to confusion. Both the LB and DB covered the TE leaving the S to cover the WR one on one. Shawn is not to blame for losing the game. It’s a team game and the team lost.

The kids never quit on Saturday even though the fans quit on the team. UGA students whine about not getting tickets yet those who do don’t show up until the end of the 1st quarter and leave at the end of the 3rd. If you really bleed Red & Black, you’ll be in the stands when the team runs out on the field on October 9 against the Vols. Say what you want about the coaching staff but get behind these kids. Shawn and his teammates deserve our support.

I said this earlier today but will repeat it tonight for everyone’s benefit. In society when you bring someone new into your office, system, club, team, etc the new person generally adapts to the environment around them. You can take a slacker and put him with a team of go getters, what generally happens to the slackers performance. Vice versa, you take a high performer and place him in an environment with a bunch of low performers with low expectations. Guess what you get.

Motivation is a product of the environment you place an individual in. Performance is directly related to the level of expectation desired. Along with discipline if necessary. CMR apparently lacks the knowledge required to be an effective CEO. To build an organization and environment conducive to success takes special Leadership qualities..

Way to man up Shawn, but in NO way was this loss your fault. It was all on Bobo and his awful play call on third down and FOUR. Why in the world were all our receivers running 20 yards down the field? Why not throw a screen pass to Ealey or pass to the fullback in the flats? All we needed was to get a first down to keep the drive alive, then run a couple more plays to get in field goal range for Walsh, run out the clock, and kick the game winning field goal. Arkansas should have never gotten the ball back. So, again, I applaud you for taking the blame, but I do not share your belief in that. It was Bobo and Bobo alone!

Tech fan here – way to man up – but it is needless.

Football is a team sport – and you would have tackled the Arkansas player – on what – the 20 or 25 yard line with 17/18 seconds left.

Arkansas would have hit another pass or run to set up the FG – and they had the game won anyway.

There is a lot out of sync with UGA. Ealy’s pass blocking is terrible, the O-Line is not gashing the defense and is struggling. They could not pick up any blitzs. And Bobo is out of sync with his play calling.

The defense is also struggling – 3 huge busted coverages resulting in TD’s -= made it real easy for Arkansas.

ONe thing I noticed – Arkansas had 46 seconds left in the first half – drove 60 plus yards for FG
Second half – had the ball with under a minute – took them 41 seconds to score om 3 plays – running a no huddle – UGA defensive coaching staff was not prepared – the defense was not getting set.

UGA just flat got out-coached during critical momemts. Richt is a good HC – but the game day coaching really lacked and so far Spurrier and Petrino have out coached Richt this season.

WDE

September 20th, 2010
10:21 pm

You know, the more the players catch the blame (either by their own press comments or the coaches’), the better UGA’s outlook gets!

A team of 5- and 4-stars. Talent goes to Athens to die.

I challenge someone, anyone, to justify to me why UGA, which sits in the geographic center of recruiting heaven, has the 6th-highest paid head coach, and consistently sells out a 90k capacity stadium is taking positives of “improving” while losing to teams like South Carolina and Arkansas.

As much as I HATE Georgia fans, even I think you should expect better than this out of your program.

The post kind of reminds me of Joe Cox saying “”most of these people never even played football.” Well you and Joe are right. I never played football. But I do watch more teams than Georgia play. I see teams tackling well…not getting tired…with creative offensive plays that actually fool the defense! I see teams not dancing on the sidelines or in the huddle…I see teams whose coaches manage the clock well in close games. I see teams play that don’t get personal foul penalties for taking a swing at other players. I read articles about other teams that are more about football and less about who is suspended or who got arrested. I see other coaches saying things like “I need to coach better.” I wonder…why can’t my favorite team do that?

All that said I was impressed and proud of the fight the kids showed this weekend. Go Dawgs…get better!

Bake- I imagine you are a 14 year old that bought a UGA hat in a gas station and has been a ‘loyal’ fan ever since, but let me enlighten you.

Believe it or not, there was a time when two polls separately anointed national champions- there was no “BCS” to dictate who was the true champion. That said, GT finished number 1 in the UPI poll and Colorado number 1 in the AP poll. A small little factoid too- Colorado only went undefeated because of the infamous “5th down” they got one drive against Missouri, where they were given an extra play beyond the 4 downs:

“The Fifth Down Game was a college football game that included a play that the crew officiating the game permitted to occur in error. That play enabled the Colorado Buffaloes to defeat the Missouri Tigers by scoring a touchdown on the last play of their game on October 6, 1990. The ensuing controversy cast doubt on Colorado’s claim to Division I-A’s 1990 national championship, which it shares with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. It has been called one of the top memorable moments and blunders in college football history.[1][2]”

I’m sorry UGA only has one national title in its 118 year history. Just remember, too- you are one Herschel Walker away from being South Carolina version 2

That play was his fault, but not the loss. Ark. shouldn’t of even had the ball at that point. And in the telecast the announcers showed another UGA player who bit inside and should have been back – we were playing a two deep – he shouldn’t have been back there by himself. Notice how Mallet hit his TE on the 1st two plays of that last series? Why didn’t we on the preceding series?

I’m a Tech fan to the end, and not sad to say that I root against the Bullpups every game of the year; but I will say this kid is the type of player UGA should be proud to have. He has shown more guts than your entire coaching staff in this one simple statement. I’ve been saying for years that Richt is a terrible head coach, but when the Puppies were winning SEC championships, everyone on these boards couldn’t acknowledge the terrible game management he showed. The few big games you guys won a few years ago, his only tactic was to resort to gimmicks. His time management was so bad, he had to be replaced as offensive play caller, but apparently it just trickles down to whoever he chooses to take over that part of the game. I really appreciate the fact that it takes you guys so long to get it, he’s bought at least another three years off of your support. The only way this meltdown could be better is if you give him a lifetime contract a la Paul Hewitt, then we Tech fans can enjoy the endless whining (albeit well deserved) for the next few years until UGA can raise enough money to buy him out. At least this kid gets it! THWG!

And I’ll assume you are on some Oconee County drugs, because 6 in a row isn’t something you dismiss. Don’t be jealous that Auburn let the sliding stop and made a change- something UGA doesn’t have the juevos to do. I loved TT but its hard to argue a change was needed and made without the 5-year “wait till next year” approach the Athens School for Wayward Boys is taking.

Your Wikipedia claims 3 national titles- two of which were in the WWII era during and immediately after our country was at war, and most able-bodied men were serving their country. Takes guts to be a national champ those years…

Face the facts: UGA is on a downward slide, has been for 3 years (nice job in 2008 with your preseason #1 team). Auburn’s moving on up and has real results to back that up- its not Kool-Aid.

And before you get into the UGA 4-year streak on us, I just want you to think about your season and tell me if you honestly think you aren’t due for a good ole-fashioned butt wooping.

Mobile dawg my comments are not Vanilla. I was simply pointing out that the coaches are not putting us in the best position to win and that we have not played with out best players and our full arsonal of players which has put too much on our freshman QB. These are facts regardless of what anybody has had to go through. It is worth pointing out that when we get everyone back and if the coaches actually step up and change some things, maybe we can salvage the season. That can still be considered taking accountability. So there you go, Im saying the exact same thing as everyoneelse. Poor playcalling and we are shorthanded. A recipe for disaster. That’s not an excuse, its a fact pimp.

True, the fans are getting restless — but they aren’t giving up on this team. You obviously didn’t read the stories about the UGA fan base during the Alabama game when the Dawgs were getting stomped at half time. WDE, I think you need some education on national championships. Even though the polls were separate back then — if you won both you were considered “concensus national champions”. UGA won both polls in 1980. Also, UGA won what most sports historians call a concensus national championship in 1942 because more polls selected UGA than Ohio State. Ohio State won the AP that year, but only because the AP voting was done at the end of the regular season. Ohio State didn’t go to a bowl game that year — UGA won the Rose Bowl (the grand daddy of them all at the time). UGA and Tech have also won other national championships in other polls along the way as well but the point of the post was “concensus national championships”. Back in the day if teh AP and UPI polls split — the two teams were considered co-national champions.

We won’t be ranked in the top ten at the end of the season. We will probably lose to Fla and GT. We have a poor excuse for an OC that makes the game so dull you go to sleep. We have a head coach without passion and fire. Where are the glory days for the Dawgs? I am so tired of excuses and “O, shucks”. Georgia football has reached the stage where it’s just not worth it anymore. We’ve lagged behind so long now that we will never catch up under CMR. I have loved the quality person CMR is but I have tremendous doubts about his ability to get his team up for big games. AF Dawg-

You obviously didn’t read the most important part. UGA claims one of their national championships (1942, and pretty much 1946) during a time of selective service. Who care is if you won the Rose Bowl that year? Our country was at WAR and most 18-22 year olds were in North Africa or Guadalcanal by then. The fact of the matter is, MANY colleges didn’t field teams during the time of war. If you want to claim a national championship those years, be my guest.

Common sense says when you are installing a NEW Defense. You should play a Safety in the rear position in case someone fails on an assignment. Where was the common sense against a passing team like Ark. Why was it not changed during the game after 4 FOUR complete breakdowns for TOUCHDOWNS, Do you think Saban would have continued to do that. That is the main problem with GA. Richt doesn’t make the decisions that he should be making. So “who the hell is”? That was a disgrace people. 4 times!

If I recall correctly, Shawn Williams was the player that hit the punter on the bobbled snap and subsequent run. He hit him with his right shoulder and got a stinger for his effort.
At least SOMEBODY hit the punter after he made the first down.

Speaking of punt returns, why are we standing around when the opponent punts- we look like we are in the service and have to stand at attention. No punt rush at all.
We are a miracle- we not only refuse to pressure the punter, we don’t even set up the return.
I thought we got rid of the “old” special teams coach and philosophy.

I’m sorry, even in a year of transition from one defense to another this is unacceptable. Coach who sees lack of toughness in team but no need for two-a-days out of fear of injuries. Little evidence of strength and conditioning. Annual suspensions for stupid Dawg tricks. Recruits who seem to regress from a lack of coaching when they get to Athens. Suspect evaluation of talent that we do recruit. A divided fan base. Ans a stubborn refusal to believe that there are problems in the program that need to be addressed. UGA’s claim to fame is the playing in the SEC and nothing else. Well, you better start focusing on programs and not conferences, just ask Alabama about Utah a couple years ago in the Sugar Bowl.

Everyone in Athens continues to stick their heads in the sand and blames someone else. It is never CMR’s fault, only the OC, DC, or Special Teams coach.

UGA cannot let CMR go, because they are insecure about who they can get to replace CMR. This program is so tainted that no credible head coach wants to take over the damaged program. This is a rebuilding year and I really believe that we are close to having some good things going here. I agree that back-to-back SEC losses is not acceptable on a more-than-once every-tean-years basis, but the lack of fortitude by some of my fellow UGA fans is very disppointing, i.e. all you folks who left when it was 24-10 in the fourth on Saturday. Murray and his offense did not quit, though, and this quote from Williams is a very positive sign that the D is “working the problem” moving forward, as well. I certainly didn’t see anything to indicate that we can’t beat UT, UF, Auburn, Tech, etc. on Saturday, so let’s stick with it, Georgia fans, it’s a long season and we can draw our conclusions at the end.

And it isn’t like you are Tennessee, either, who really has just had the smite of God on their program.

You’ve had a stable staff, steady top-ranked recruiting, and years of consecutive sell-outs between the hedges. The fact that you are 1-2 (0-2) is the sign of a program with fundamental flaws.

With the economy the way it is, and with the atletic dept, accumilating untold wealth we could buy out everyones contract, and begin anew. I am sure UGA will have no problem filling all of those positions with people that actually do care about UGA enough to restore the sense of pride, the program once had.

The Furman coach apparently told his D men to “tackle low around the ankles” and they did that.

I saw the UGA /Penn State Sugar Bowl in 81 or 82 and we lost. Why? Joe Pa told his men to tackle Walker low ……….around his ankles and they did that and held on. He was close to breaking long ones but they hit him LOW ……….like Furman did Lattimore.

I guess UGA has not figured out how to tackle great, squared up, low running backs ….like Joe Pa did nearly 30 years ago.

As a UGA grad, I am disgusted by the current UGA squad’s LACK of complete game preparation, like the missed opportunity to drop Arkansas deep on that bad punt snap that was run out for a first down. They scored later.

It’s a rebuilding year because we have a freshman qb, a new d-coordinator, and have had our best player taken away based on a disproportionate sentence by the NCAA. Last year we weren’t even rebuilding after the loss of Stafford and Moreno, but we still beat Tech silly in Atlanta.

In retrospect, we probably should’ve bitten the bullet and pulled the red shirt off Murray last year, but he is there now and has the capability to be a special college player. I’m not saying it’s a perfect situation, and if we are sitting at the same spot at the end of the season, let alone next year, I will have my pitchfork out, too, but I believe that there is a chance that we could have a good run under Murray (even if Green goes pro) if Grantham’s defense can get the kinks worked out (they did do SOME things well on Saturday, while they did others horrendously). Tavarres King’s touchdown was a great “effort” play on Saturday, Aron White had a beautiful catch, and even Marlon Brown seems to be developing. Ealey is not Knowshon, but he is a perfectly viable SEC back. I’m not saying it’s a sure thing that things turn around, but all is not lost at this juncture. It’s time for the coaches to earn their money. We will know at the end of the season.

CMR’s decision to play neither Murray or Burger last season is a clear indication that he doesn’t have what it takes to win in this conference. While Burger, in hindsight, wouldn’t have mattered anyways- you simply cannot go into a season without a QB option with some kind of experience. Now, Murray personally hasn’t disappointed, but I bet right now you are wishing he had the chance to beat out Joe Cox last year. He would be getting the ball out quicker and would have better pocket presence.

I believe he will eventually be a solid strength for the team, but UGA has done an excellent job of having half of its team be good while the other half is terrible. Except this season’s “strength”, the OL, is also terrible.

Where fine upstanding young men are turned into arrested criminals.
Where Bobo the Clown performs his famous “head butt” without a helmet trick every other week.

Athens….. It’s where it’s at.

What a Joke and the Cesspool of the South…. you guys need to come up to Knoxville to see what a real college town is like. See you there next year…. this year we are going to come down there on 10/9 and destroy you in that smelly hole of a stadium where you let your dogs sh*t everywhere.

How about W. Ealy wiffing on all his blocks that caused big issues. Blocking and tackeling are the main reason UGA is 1-2. They are not dominating in any category. And the question mark of QB, the biggest concern to start the season has proven to be a non issue. A Murray has performed well in all three games. He is going to get better and better but if they don’t learn how to dowminate on the line and block and tackle right it will not matter. I can’t remember when UGA were so inept at dominating the play of the game.
