‘It was my fault,’ Dogs’ Shawn Williams says

From AJC correspondent Andy Johnston in Athens:

Georgia safety Shawn Williams is shouldering the responsibility for Saturday’s loss.

He missed tackling Arkansas wide receiver Greg Childs at the 25-yard line, and Childs ran into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown with 15 seconds left.

“It was my fault,” Williams said Monday night, following Georgia’s practice. “I missed the tackle.”

Williams played most of the second half, his first extended playing time of the season. He saw the play on game film on Sunday.

“I just had to move on,” Williams said. “There was nothing I could do about it.”

Haha, I was talking football: you know- players, coaches, X’s & O’s. You, of course as a UGA fan, have nothing good to say about any of those. You are the one who took the fight to the dirt, and I was happy to come out ahead on that to. Your only exit was to call me a Techie- quite an elegant surrender.

Being a metro-Atlanta resident and seeing links on the AJC homepage is all the invitation I need to come talk football with you guys. You’ll deny it, but you must also be aware of the countless WE RUN THIS STATE signatures throughout the AJC sports section.

What is amazing is the fact that we have a mobile QB and we keep him in the pocket to get sacked. Especially at the end of the game when it was third down and four and he gets sacked standing still and never saw it coming. He shoild have rolled out and had a chance to run or pass for the first down, We only needed a few more yards and would have been able to possibly kick a game winning field goal. We need a new play designer and caller. Right now our offense is too tame.

Brian Evans, You’re wrong about UGA fans — you’re making this stuff up to try and make people look bad. Most programs would love to have the support the Dawgs have. True, the fans are getting restless — but they aren’t giving up on this team. You obviously didn’t read the stories about the UGA fan base during the Alabama game when the Dawgs were getting stomped at half time. All of the announcers covering the game talked about how impressed they were with how the fans stood behind the team the entire game. I’ll believe their live reporting before I’ll believe your exaggerations.

WDE, I think you need some education on national championships. Even though the polls were separate back then — if you won both you were considered “concensus national champions”. UGA won both polls in 1980. Also, UGA won what most sports historians call a concensus national championship in 1942 because more polls selected UGA than Ohio State. Ohio State won the AP that year, but only because the AP voting was done at the end of the regular season. Ohio State didn’t go to a bowl game that year — UGA won the Rose Bowl (the grand daddy of them all at the time). UGA and Tech have also won other national championships in other polls along the way as well but the point of the post was “concensus national championships”. Back in the day if teh AP and UPI polls split — the two teams were considered co-national champions.

Who cares about the remainder of the season? We’re unranked, we can’t win the SEC east or play in the SEC championship. We have not shot at the NC. We won’t be ranked in the top ten at the end of the season. We will probably lose to Fla and GT. We have a poor excuse for an OC that makes the game so dull you go to sleep. We have a head coach without passion and fire. Where are the glory days for the Dawgs? I am so tired of excuses and “O, shucks”. Georgia football has reached the stage where it’s just not worth it anymore. We’ve lagged behind so long now that we will never catch up under CMR. I have loved the quality person CMR is but I have tremendous doubts about his ability to get his team up for big games. He’s got a bad record in the SEC over the past two to three years …. look at Tenn, Fla, SC, Kentucky, LSU … they have had his number. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired of hearing CMR’s excuses. Get em up or get out … that’s the way I feel.

Arkansas fan here. Mr. Williams, to say that means you have more guts than most of us; so always keep your head up. Also, I really don’t think the loss was your fault because the whole team just couldn’t get it done. Best wishes on the rest of your season and collegiate career.

It is a team game and a 60 minute game. What about Mike Bobo with the bonehead call to send the wide receivers 20 yards out on a 3rd and 4. How about the bonehead decision by Coach Grantham to play prevent defense on the last drive when your defesne had played balls to the wall the entire 4th quarter. There is enough blame to go around but this is a team game. There is no me in team. Shake it off and get ready for next week. This is no time for the blame game. Go Dawgs

Our chance to win that game was lost when Murray was sacked on 3rd and 4. We were not going to beat that team in overtime. Ryan Mallet can fall forward and pick up 25 yards.

Time to move on Shawn. No game is a gimme anymore. If they are sulking around about Arkansas we will lose to Miss State.

How long is CMR going to stay with Bobo. He moved him down to the field last year thinking that would help, but the fact is our offense has progressively gotten worse since Bobo took over play calling. The facts are there, fire Bobo or CMR will soon be out the door with him.

No Shawn not only did you miss the tackle but you didn’t break up the catch and the defensive line didn’t pressure the QB and the offensive line didn’t block and the running backs didn’t run hard. No Shawn it was a total team loss from the coaches to the waterboy.

AF Dawg, were you there on Saturday? Did you look around? Did you see the stands in the west endzone or the NE corner of the 300 level in the 1st & 4th quarters? Did you see all of the folks leaving early in the 4th? I was there and could have given you a live report if that’s what you need to see the truth.

I was at the Bama game in ‘08 and there were a lot of us who did stay around til the very end. Same thing for Tech in ‘08. But on Saturday, folks were late arriving and left early. You don’t need goons from ESPN to tell you that if you saw it in person.

AF Dawg-

You obviously didn’t read the most important part. UGA claims one of their national championships (1942, and pretty much 1946) during a time of selective service. Who care is if you won the Rose Bowl that year? Our country was at WAR and most 18-22 year olds were in North Africa or Guadalcanal by then. The fact of the matter is, MANY colleges didn’t field teams during the time of war. If you want to claim a national championship those years, be my guest.

Common sense says when you are installing a NEW Defense. You should play a Safety in the rear position in case someone fails on an assignment. Where was the common sense against a passing team like Ark. Why was it not changed during the game after 4 FOUR complete breakdowns for TOUCHDOWNS, Do you think Saban would have continued to do that. That is the main problem with GA. Richt doesn’t make the decisions that he should be making. So “who the hell is”? That was a disgrace people. 4 times!

If I recall correctly, Shawn Williams was the player that hit the punter on the bobbled snap and subsequent run. He hit him with his right shoulder and got a stinger for his effort.
At least SOMEBODY hit the punter after he made the first down.

Speaking of punt returns, why are we standing around when the opponent punts- we look like we are in the service and have to stand at attention. No punt rush at all.
We are a miracle- we not only refuse to pressure the punter, we don’t even set up the return.
I thought we got rid of the “old” special teams coach and philosophy.

Beamer Ball is the way to go.

Line can’t block. No imagination in play calling. OC who blames his rookie quarterback for problems. Secondary that leaves receivers wide open . . . I’m sorry, even in a year of transition from one defense to another this is unacceptable. Coach who sees lack of toughness in team but no need for two-a-days out of fear of injuries. Little evidence of strength and conditioning. Annual suspensions for stupid Dawg tricks. Recruits who seem to regress from a lack of coaching when they get to Athens. Suspect evaluation of talent that we do recruit. A divided fan base. Ans a stubborn refusal to believe that there are problems in the program that need to be addressed. For goodness sakes don’t blame Coach Richt, he’s a good man. Wake up folks! The buck stops at his desk!

Season is over. At year’s end, Grads will insist on changes that WE CAN count one.

Richt has had 10 years with only mediocre results, time for some new blood. If it is not Williams, then it is Ealey and if it not Ealey, then it is AJ Green and the beat goes on.

UGA is not a team. It is a group of kids that must be low IQ or something. I’ve had way too much of them all.
