A roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s loss to Arkansas:
My game story, which notes the calendar seemed turned back:
ATHENS — It felt a lot like 1993 in Sanford Stadium on Saturday.
For the first time in 17 years, Georgia lost to Arkansas. For the first time in 17 years, the Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 in the SEC.
Georgia tried to avoid this daunting hole by rallying from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to tie the game 24-24 with about four minutes to play, but the Dogs’ defense, which twice earlier had allowed easy touchdowns on blown coverages, committed another gaffe at the end as Arkansas clinched a 31-24 victory.
Jeff Schultz’s column, which notes Georgia’s 2-6 record in its past eight SEC games:
ATHENS – It’s not about one player not being here. It’s not about playing a freshman quarterback or having a certain soft spot on the depth chart or the big, bad NCAA being out to get Georgia.
When a program sinks to lows not seen since the Ray Goff administration, it’s not an aberration.
Andy Johnston’s sidebar on what the heck happened on those three Arkansas TD passes:
ATHENS — Ryan Mallett’s three touchdown passes were remarkably similar in Arkansas’ 31-24 victory over Georgia on Saturday. On all three, his receivers were wide open, leaving Bulldogs defenders and coaches searching for answers to the breakdowns.
Andy Johnston’s sidebar on what the heck happened on those six sacks of Aaron Murray:
ATHENS — Mike Bobo didn’t place all the blame for Georgia’s offensive problems on the offensive line.
He said the six sacks in Arkansas’ 31-24 victory Saturday were a combination of poor play from an offensive line that missed injured starting guard Chris Davis and of redshirt freshman quarterback Aaron Murray taking too much time in the pocket.
My notebook from the game, including Michael Adams’ comments on the A.J. Green case and football arrests, plus other items:
ATHENS — University of Georgia president Michael Adams said Saturday the school did everything it could to get star wide receiver A.J. Green’s suspension reduced, but Adams did not quarrel with the NCAA’s rejection of the appeal.
. . . On another topic, Adams said he spoke to “every employee” of the Athletic Association in a recent staff meeting, delivering the message that he wants a stop put to the off-field problems on the football team. Nine players have been arrested this year.
Andy Johnston’s report on Mark Richt’s Sunday conference call:
. . . Arkansas’ six sacks were a combination of the offensive line breaking down, poor protection from the running backs and Aaron Murray hanging onto the ball too long.
“I don’t want to throw out anything that would sound like dirty laundry or anything on these kids,” Richt said. “[The blame] was spread out across the board. It wasn’t just one culprit.”
The AJC’s weekly feature looking back at the past game and peeking ahead to the next, which is Saturday at Mississippi State:
Mississippi State, like Georgia, is on a two-game SEC losing streak after opening the season with an easy victory. Coach Dan Mullen’s quarterbacks –- starter Chris Relf and backup Tyler Russell -– combined to throw five interceptions in Saturday’s 29-7 loss to LSU. Mississippi State trailed just 12-7 in the third quarter, but the Tigers scored the final 17 points. Mullen said LSU’s average starting field position was Mississippi State’s 48, thanks to the five interceptions. He added that Relf will start against Georgia.
And here’s Brant Sanderlin’s 23-photo gallery from the Georgia-Arkansas game.

This is how the game ended, Arkansas' Tramain Thomas breaking up a last-gasp 70-yard Aaron Murray heave in the end zone in front of Aron White.

Ealey missed at least two blocks that led directly to two sacks. The last one was when we were driving for a winning kick. He may have been responsible for more missed blocks.

I said it last year and I will say it again. The coach and his entire staff need to be fired. The recruiting at UGA is at best “garbage”. 33 of the players on the South Carolina team are from Georgia schools. Wow, now how did they slip out of our hands. Oh wait, I know, we recruited Thugs who showboat at every “perceived great tackle” and forget to play the game while the coaches look on in dumb bewilderment thinking that if you do the same thing over and over you will get different results. Outcoached, outthought and outplayed but a “ready-to-run-when-things-go-wrong” Bobby Petrino. UGA has become a JOKE.

Even when the dawgs are winning – which they’re not – I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?
As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.
Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.
So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?
Is it Richt’s great salon suntan or those cool looking shades he wears, or is it his red panties?
Just asking.

That’s a very accurate observation. Unfortunately, the UGA coaches show zero inclination to change anything.

Lets say UGA beats Miss. St and Colorado. Record now 3-2.
UGA may or may not beat Tenn, lets say they do. Now 4-2.
Beat vandy. Now 5-2. You homers will be chanting NC and program is back on track
Split Ky and Fl. now 6-3
Beat Idaho State. now 7-3. Morons chanting we are the greatest.
Lose to Auburn. If Auburn can field a team, those boys will clean our clocks as UGA is a soft team. Now 7-4.
Lose to GT. Now 7-5.
Homerss chanting wait till next year when the pervert LeMay is on team.
Odds are UGA will lose to TN, Miss State and both Ky and FL. Record now 5-7. This is reality!
This is a realistic scenario to play out. Are you really satisfied with this? Yet you morons will be telling us all what a great coach MR is and how we will win it all next year. Wake up this is the best it will be until MR and this coaching staff is gone. No SEC titles, No NC’s, more thugs and perverts on team. UGA football is in a sad state of affairs!

@Foster Grant who wrote: “How can we continue to have top 10 recruiting classes almost every year and get beat by teams that are lucky if they have a top 30 recruiting class?”
That’s because the recruiting evaluators are fools….and if you just go out and get “Rivals” four/five stars you end up with a defense like Georgia has. Remember…Toby Gerhart was a “two-star” “fullback” and led the nation in rushing last year (should have won the Heisman); Dallas Clark, the best tightend in the NFL, had to walk on at Iowa; Wes Welker barely got a D-1 offer at the last minute and went undrafted. Mark Richt would never have recruited those players or Jake Scott or Scott Woerner to play defense at UGA….think about it.

What is up with that playaction passing? This s–t does not work in the I Formation because the QB has to turn his back for a few moments and then go through his progression and it’s a tough thing to do for a young QB. Please put the kid in shotgun formation and allow him to see the field until he’s fully developed. You can still do playaction with the RB faking the handoff.

This is doing wonders for recruiting. Maybe we should turn the IQ notch down from the current 85 and see if 80 is the right level for our “student” athletes. Heck, why not aim for 75 if we could beat Florida? They for sure don’t worry about academics. Why should we?

Nothing to do with Bobo’s play calling nor Searels’ coaching the O line. Everything to do with starting a RS Freshman QB with no experience; EG standing in the pocket too long, missing checkdowns and progressions, etc. If Mallett were our QB we woulda kicked the R’backs butts. OK, that, and the 3 breakdones on the D. One breakdown can getcha beat; but three spells BIG trouble.
L. Gray really musta been pretty bad in the Spring and Summer for CMR to start Murray.
They WERE fired up and they DID play hard. Just outa position on three big plays. I hate to put it all on the QB, but it boils down to that and 3 big plays.

The problem with georgia is they are not tough mentally or physically. When a team goes away from two a days because they are worried about players getting hurt that is sign of weak team. You train as you fight as the miltitary saying goes!!! The coaching staff was also worried about not being to physical in practice and getting players hurt. When coaches think like that your team will never win. You wonder why players can’t tackle. Another indicator is when a coach has to head butt a player to fire up a player. I was totally embrassed as a Ga Fan and hope we pulled it together.

Not a UGA fan but I watched the entire game………..more troubling than any aspect of UGA’s game that folks think was inadequate (QB, OL, DB’s, play calling, missed blocks) was the AJC coverage on Sunday that had your DC blaming the players and your OC blaming the QB. What these two coaches may have said might actually be true, but what does it say to the players and the public when the coaches say it to the media???

I figured we’d split (1-1) with SC & Ark, but not shocked by 0-2. A combination of poor play calling (at times), inconsistent play by the OL & poor play by DBs has cost UGA. Part of my says SC & ARK are 2 of the best teams in the SEC this year (& we still have a shot at a 9-3 season), but the skeptic says another 8-5 disappointment. I’m hoping for a turn-around, but won’t be suprised by another letdown.

Harsh Reality

Richt has made two deciscions that have hurt UGA dearly:
1. Hiring his best friend CWM and promoting him after VanGorder’s departure.
2. Promoting M.Bobo to OC WAAAAY too soon. Bobo is in over his head. When the average fan can predict an OCs play calling what do you think our opponent’s DCs do. Right now if I’m a DC facing UGA I’m licking my chops and breathing a sigh of relief because I know I’ve got an easy week of preperation.
UGA has MAJOR problems right now and those who want to continue to blindly support CMR have their head in the sand.
I’m tired of excuses, I’m tired of watching a coach on the sideline who doesn’t seem to care whether or not we win the game or not. I don’t want to hear any more about that’s his personality, if it is then maybe he’s not suited for coaching. He was able to motivate the team to rally and tie the game, my problem is where was that effort and motivation the first 3 1/2 quarters of the game?!
Now I’m hearing about all this youth we have and they’re learning?!
Are you kidding me?! What happened to we’ve got all this experience around A.Murray. 10 of 11 starters returning and several on the two deep is not youth. Granted we’ve been missing AJ, but he’s ONE player. As I watched college football on Sat. I saw several examples of coaching staffs that do much more with less talent.
Are we to believe that man for man on each roster that Arkansas and SC have better talent than UGA? I’m not knocking the talent on either squad, but my point is the coaching is the difference.
And Bobo blaming Murray for holding the ball too long is the biggest joke of all. The two sacks were because Ealy whiffed on two critical blocks.
As for the last play, BOBO IS COMPLETELY AT FAULT. How do you send everyone 20yds deep on a 3rd and 6 and not have at LEAST ONE checkdown?!!
I’m tired of the coaches trying to lay the blame on the players but we have the “Jimmys and Joes” the problem is the Xs and Os!
Coaches MAN UP and admit you didn’t properly prepare these boys. (Granthum excluded).
Enough excuses how about some answers and results?!
