Read all about it: the aftermath of Georgia’s loss to Arkansas (updated)

(Updated 10 p.m. Sunday)

A roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s loss to Arkansas:

My game story, which notes the calendar seemed turned back:

ATHENS — It felt a lot like 1993 in Sanford Stadium on Saturday.

For the first time in 17 years, Georgia lost to Arkansas. For the first time in 17 years, the Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 in the SEC.

Georgia tried to avoid this daunting hole by rallying from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to tie the game 24-24 with about four minutes to play, but the Dogs’ defense, which twice earlier had allowed easy touchdowns on blown coverages, committed another gaffe at the end as Arkansas clinched a 31-24 victory.

Jeff Schultz’s column, which notes Georgia’s 2-6 record in its past eight SEC games:

ATHENS – It’s not about one player not being here. It’s not about playing a freshman quarterback or having a certain soft spot on the depth chart or the big, bad NCAA being out to get Georgia.

When a program sinks to lows not seen since the Ray Goff administration, it’s not an aberration.

Andy Johnston’s sidebar on what the heck happened on those three Arkansas TD passes:

ATHENS — Ryan Mallett’s three touchdown passes were remarkably similar in Arkansas’ 31-24 victory over Georgia on Saturday. On all three, his receivers were wide open, leaving Bulldogs defenders and coaches searching for answers to the breakdowns.

Andy Johnston’s sidebar on what the heck happened on those six sacks of Aaron Murray:

ATHENS — Mike Bobo didn’t place all the blame for Georgia’s offensive problems on the offensive line.

He said the six sacks in Arkansas’ 31-24 victory Saturday were a combination of poor play from an offensive line that missed injured starting guard Chris Davis and of redshirt freshman quarterback Aaron Murray taking too much time in the pocket.

My notebook from the game, including Michael Adams’ comments on the A.J. Green case and football arrests, plus other items:

ATHENS — University of Georgia president Michael Adams said Saturday the school did everything it could to get star wide receiver A.J. Green’s suspension reduced, but Adams did not quarrel with the NCAA’s rejection of the appeal.

. . . On another topic, Adams said he spoke to “every employee” of the Athletic Association in a recent staff meeting, delivering the message that he wants a stop put to the off-field problems on the football team. Nine players have been arrested this year.

Andy Johnston’s report on Mark Richt’s Sunday conference call:

. . . Arkansas’ six sacks were a combination of the offensive line breaking down, poor protection from the running backs and Aaron Murray hanging onto the ball too long.

“I don’t want to throw out anything that would sound like dirty laundry or anything on these kids,” Richt said. “[The blame] was spread out across the board. It wasn’t just one culprit.”

The AJC’s weekly feature looking back at the past  game and peeking ahead to the next, which is Saturday at Mississippi State:

Mississippi State, like Georgia, is on a two-game SEC losing streak after opening the season with an easy victory. Coach Dan Mullen’s quarterbacks –- starter Chris Relf and backup Tyler Russell -– combined to throw five interceptions in Saturday’s 29-7 loss to LSU. Mississippi State trailed just 12-7 in the third quarter, but the Tigers scored the final 17 points. Mullen said LSU’s average starting field position was Mississippi State’s 48, thanks to the five interceptions. He added that Relf will start against Georgia.

And here’s Brant Sanderlin’s 23-photo gallery from the Georgia-Arkansas game.

This is how the game ended, Arkansas' Tramain Thomas breaking up a last-gasp 70-yard Aaron Murray heave in the end zone in front of Aron White.

Arrests / Suspensions / Injuries, we don’t even know if we should practice. And, distracted by 1 of Coach Richt’s players arrested or suspended EVERY SINGLE MONTH since 2001.

I said we could not keep up with Ryan Mallett in scoring.

We did NOT.

None the fault of strength and conditioning and Mike Bobo is GREAT ?

Who’s the CULPRIT ?

Coach Richt said spread it all around. That is fairly accurate, but there is 1 person who is ACCOUNTABLE. He is the same person given CREDIT for the recruiting. Given CREDIT for the 91 wins. He is the same person ACCOUNTABLE then for the 29 losses after 9 years and 3 games.

7-4 he might achieve and then beat lowly Georgia tek WHO IS NOT RANKED. 8-4 then some bowl game against some MEANINGLESS OPPONENT, as Coach Richt has ACCOMPLISHED all 10 years now.

Beating Georgia tek at 8-1 is how we measure, how we hold Coach Richt ACCOUNTABLE ? Is this really where we are as a FOOTBALL PROGRAM the # 11 football program in America All-Time in 1-A wins, yet for the time after 2005, there are in fact 18 teams whom Coach Richt does not have more wins than coming in to this season, and at 1-2, there are MORE TEAMS THAN 18 whom Coach Richt does NOT have more wins than.

9-win season. 9-4. “Coach Richt won 9 games. No coach in the nation is better. 99 wins in 10 seasons.” That is the mantra here.

Excuse me of the 10 seasons all but 2 were in fact 14-game seasons.

29 LOSSES now.

We have been kept from beating a Top 10 Final AP Poll team in EVERY BOWL GAME.

Yet, DISNEYdawgs.com want to say we won 10 games.

This is 2010.

14-game seasons. Win 10 games and THIS is the type of year you are YAPPING about.

Shut up about 10-win seasons for God’s Sake. I am not satisfied with this season, and Coach Richt OFFICIALLY is on the hot seat. He will coach next year, here. He will lose 15 seniors and 4-5 juniors after this season, and cannot possibly be great in 2011 either. And, for all his proclamations about “DREAM TEAM” how has Coach Richt and his “coaching staff” done in-state getting Offensive Players to help out this woebegone # 81 in the nation Offense ? It is an Abysmal Failure. Coach Richt can go take over at Florida State; Jimbo Fisher is not their answer they say. Maybe he won’t make the same mistake he did here and hire NOBODIES as his ENTIRE COACHING STAFF his entire 10-Year UGA career.

Kirby Smart, Will Muschamp, Chris Petersen – would ANY of them have HIRED 1 single coach on Coach Richt’s “coaching staff” the entire 10-year Coach Richt Era ? How would a DREAM TEAM in the state of Georgia look with any of those 3 as our Head Coach ? Who would be their Offensive Coordinator ? Would any of them have these 4 tight ends and have 1 guy catch 1 pass all day long yesterday ? Would any of them have redshirted Knowshon Moreno so we only got to see him 2 years ? Would any of them try to motivate the players BEFORE the game 2 weeks ago or BEFORE the game yesterday, or wait until the 4th quarter to prove that you do MOTIVATE Georgia football players – as Erk Russell proved every Saturday.

I must have missed that.

Greg McGarity and Michael F. Adams BOTH after SEC week 2 now have issued absolute clear and undeniable REBUKES of the arrests / suspensions. Where are their it is all the fault of the Police and all the fault of the NCAA ?

I said last year the CMR will have another esacpe goat to keep his job. The escape goat was having a freshman QB. If you notice Alabama had a freshman last year and Texas have one this year. All the problems Ga have are contributed to coaching bottom line.

I been a supporter of the dawg nation for over 30 years and about tired of the excuses. Why and how did Alabama and Florida find a way to win and all we get are excuses. We have the best high school players in the southeast, but they come to Ga and it seems that they underachieve with this coaching group. Go figure.

folks, UGA has had numerous changes this year with the new D and freshman QB. we’re going to get smacked around this year, so look at it like a rebuilding year. granted, bobo is getting on my nerves and the secondary looked horrible on saturday, but everything will improve.

Hey this is almost as brilliant a redshirting Moreno– – – – lets go it on 4th down on our own 30 IN THE SECOND QUARTER.

We’re down by 7 and cant given them the ball back with a short field – except, of course, if we dont make it.

I am outraged by Sunday’s article where Bobo is quoted as saying [the last sack was Aaron Murray's fault]. How about taking some responsability yourself Bobo for a lack of creativity and coaching!!! Do not put the game on one kid’s shoulders!

*We’d rather have Richt than Saban because at least he’s a good man.
*Saban wanted Grantham but Richt stole him.
*Grantham coached Bama’s D last summer not Saban.
*King and Ealey are better than Ingram and Richardson.
*Phil Steele has us at #3 and he is the best of all predictors.
*Richt has the highest winning percentage of any coach last 10 years.
*Saban follows his good seasons with 7-6 seasons.
*This is the best O-Line in the country.
*Saban will leave Bama in ___ years.
*UGA will own Florida this year.
*UGA wins the East and beats Bama for the SEC.

Peterson may leave BSU eventually but it will not be for UGA. Why go to a place where one loss

He has more sense than that.
Its a cycle teams come and go. Those with memories longer than one day might remember
Bama not being good. Oh I forgot Saban is GOD so is Meyer.

Maybe the O Line can read what worked for the Falcons!

His linemates kept up the high energy. The Falcons wound up scoring four times in their first five possessions.

“It was just a mindset,” center Todd McClure said. “A lot of people after that game last week kind of doubted us and didn’t know if we had it anymore. We played with that little chip on our shoulders.”

GoDawgs is spot on with one of his comments:

“Richt has had ten years to win and he has struggled. Saban-three years National Title
Meyer-one to three years National Titles
LSU – National Title.
It is time for a change.”

Not saying time for a change, but the other part makes you think a lot… If you are getting top 10 talent pretty much every year and it takes these other coaches 1, 2, 3 or 4 years to win it all and/or CONTINUALLY get to big games like the SEC Championship, BCS bowl games why can UGA only get there once every 10 years and to the National Title game on Herchel’s back?

Herschel and Bo Jackson were amazing and there will never be two like them again, but the running backs at UGA are always going pro and doing well so how come Florida goes every year, Bama now is going every year again and LSU always is putting the hurt to 90% of its schedule no matter who is playing QB or RB?????

The EXCUSES of we are in Florida’s division have to STOP. Their talent ebbs and flows like UGA and without Tebow they will probably win this side AGAIN (unless Spurrier can beat them)….

Has it really been 10 years and ONLY 1, one stinking SEC Chamionship with NO National Title shots??? Not even playing in the big game!

BUT THE FINAL BLOW COMES WITH BOBO’S POINTING THE FINGER AT A REDSHIRT FRESHMAN INSTEAD OF LOOKING TO FIX THE PROBLEM BOBO LOOKS TO AFIX THE BLAME. LAST I LOOKED FOOTBALL IS A TEAM GAME AND THE COACHES ARE PART OF THAT TEAM IF THE TEAM IS TO BE SUCCESSFUL. WE DON’T NEED TO WAIT UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR AS WE HAVE SEEN ENOUGH. MR NEEDS TO TAKE OVER THE OFFENSE AND HE NEEDS TO DO IT NOW. WE DON’T NEED A MANAGER, WE NEED A COACH.

Uh, JD, we won the SEC in 2002, won the east in 2003 and won the SEC in 2005.

Dooley won 6 SEC titles in 25 years and he is the best we ever had according to some folks.

My standards are a little higher.

Richt needs to demote Bobo.
Richt needs to take over calling plays.
This is his team.
He is ultimately responsible.

Now is the time.

GREAT NEWS !!!

UGA President met with EVERY football coach and informed them he wanted ALL ARRESTS & OFF FIELD ISSUES STOPPED and CONTROLLED.

There will be NO MORE ARRESTS !!!!

Way to go Adams!! Good job!

Way to right this ship!!!

Have you ever heard ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS???

Make an example of actually disciplining the coaching staff and I guarantee that will filter down to the players through LONG practices and a LOT of wind sprints… That is how it was done in the old days…

Quit babying the team and toughen them up through DISCIPLINE!!

What a S-O-F-T age we have entered…

DISCIPLINE envokes FEAR which enovkes DESIRE TO DO RIGHT…

Maybe after another arrest Adams will TALK to each player ….. Then after another maybe he will hold a press conference ….

DISCIPLINE the football coaching staff by taking away a few perks and I GUARANTEE THEY TRANSFER THAT TO THE TEAM AND GET CONTROL OF THE PLAYERS OR THE ONES THAT KEEP ON WILL HIT THE HIGHWAY..

Heck the seniors are supposed to do this so the coaches do not have to babysit..

Oh well, done ranting and feel better now.

Mike Dumbo Bobo made a terrible play call. 3rd and 4 from mid-field with 2 minutes to go. Why do you drop your QB 5-8 yards back in a pocket for a pass only. Murray has proven he can run. The option rollout was the ticket. At least give the kid a choice. Run or throw. I like our chances with Walsh and a field goal. Dumbo cost us that chance!

Defense blows...

Come on guys… Last time we lost to Arkansas was 17 years ago, aren’t we being a little harsh. Did we really think we’d run the table this year with a freshman QB? Even when we where ranking number 1 we couldn’t get it done. Lower those expectations and you’ll stop kicking the dog as much. In CMR defense, both SC and ARK were ranked above us, SC is 13th and ARK is 19th…

As expected, the story line from Richt after the latest loss Saturday (6 losses in the last 8 SEC games)is the same: we played a very good team, we made some mistakes and need to improve, and we are getting better. If this was the storyline at Duke or Vanderbilt, that would sound O.K., but this is Georgia. According to several College Football Magazines this fall, Georgia is considered “one of the top ten most desired coaching positions in the BCS.” An interesting question: Does Georgia have one of the top ten coaching staffs in the BCS? I think not.

JD, have you not been paying attention. CMR takes the guys swimming. What more do you want. I’m old enough to remember the days when Woody Hayes, Bear Bryant Erk Russell, all those old school coaches used to take the teams for ice cream and putt putt. Richt has a proven methodology and I see no reason to change now. I’m sure he has enough time put aside on his schedule to make sure that after he gets his spraytan touched up, he and the staff can personally see every player tucked into bed with cookies and milk and a sweet lullaby. If you know of a better way to instill discipline and mental toughness in young men, I’d like to hear it.

I don’t care how you spin it, a loss to Mississippi State proves we are a terrible, TER-RI-BULL-DAWG team at a time when the SEC EAST was up for grabs and our very experienced coach, with years of his own recruits, has led us to a 1-2 start, 0-2 against any team with the potential to play.
