ATHENS – University of Georgia president Michael Adams said the school did everything it could to get star wide receiver A.J. Green’s suspension reduced, but he did not quarrel with the NCAA’s rejection of the appeal.
“It’s certainly not too light,” Adams said of Green’s four-game suspension,”and yet I’m not in a position to criticize the NCAA. They are trying to send a message about contact with agents and agent runners and representatives.”
Green was suspended for selling his Independence Bowl jersey to a person the NCAA considers an agent, former North Carolina football player Chris Hawkins. An NCAA committee late Friday rejected Georgia’s attempt to get the suspension shortened.
“I don’t think A.J. knew what he was dealing with,” Adams said, meaning an agent. But the fact Hawkins met the NCAA definition of an agent is “part of why I believe they stuck with four games instead of less,” Adams said.
Adams, in an interview before Saturday’s game against Arkansas, said the university got “the best counsel and advice you can get to make an appeal. . . . I think the university did everything to help [Green] that the university could have done.”
Adams acknowledged it “clearly” would be against the rules for a player to sell a jersey to a non-agent as well.
“It was a mistake, and frankly I think it’s time to move on,” Adams said. “He’s a star player and an important player, I understand all of that. . . . But you don’t build a whole season around one player.
“At the end of the year, maybe he’s fresher than some of the defensive backs that are covering him. I’ll try to look on the bright side.”
++++++++++++++
On another topic, Adams said he spoke to “every employee” of the Athletic Association in a recent staff meeting, delivering the message that he wants a stop put to the off-field problems on the football team. Nine players have been arrested this year.
“They don’t like it any better than I do, and I think they’ll deal with it,” Adams said of the athletics staff. “You’re dealing with 19-year-olds, and we have more [arrests] in the general student body than I would like. But we have had too much in the football team. And so we expect the coaches and the AD’s to provide role models and leadership for their players, and I told the whole Athletic Association staff that.”
He reiterated what he calls the “three Adams rules”:
“You follow NCAA and SEC guidelines. You go to class. And you stay out of trouble.
“You don’t have to be Phi Beta Kappa, but you have to do those three things to play here,” Adams said. “It’s an honor to put on the jersey that says Georgia. And so we expect people to represent us in a positive fashion, on and off the field. That is not an unrealistic expectation.”
Adams wasn’t specific on how the coaches and athletics staff should address the problem. “I don’t tell them how to do their jobs, and they don’t tell me how to do mine,” he said. “But the message there is pretty clear, and I think everybody is in sync now.”
Adams said new athletic director Greg McGarity “feels as strongly or more strongly about [the issue] than I do, and I’m going to depend on him and the coaches to manage it.”

Arkansas won the game and they did not have AJ Green! I wonder how they did it? Georgia should really look into this. By the way, I don’t care if it is Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Alabama, or anyone else; people who commit criminal acts should loose their scholarships and not be allowed to play college football.

These guys need to step up and call this what it is – CRAP!!!! There is no way that Dareus gets 2 games and Green gets 4! If there is a reason why there is a difference in punishment then the NCAA should have to come out and say it! I bet you that Dareus started naming names and that is why he got 2 instead of 4!!!!
Oh, get over it ARM…..he, along with all the rest of the THUGS, should have been kicked in the A$$ and told to get out of Athens. You truly don’t understand what’s really been going on, do you? UGA is a THUG Football Factory…..they don’t care if you can read or write, all they care about (they couldn’t care less about football players as persons) is how fast you can run with the football, tackle, block, etc.. I will give them this…..they do care whether you actually graduate or not because if you didn’t, it would make the University of Football THUGS look bad……as if they’re really having any problems doing that
Richt should be fired immediately along with his whole staff…….all of them are stinking up Athens and the whole State of Georgia……they are an embarassment. BTW…….GO BEES

Ole Miss is on the way DOWN
UGA is on the way DOWN….
We are at best a middle of the pack team this year and we right now are in last place in the SEC East.
If we can’t win with 4 and 5 star recruits, things are going to get ugly…. we are losing recruits left and right ….. how will we do when being a Bulldog dont mean sh%# anymore and we have 2 and 3 star recruits to put on the field.

A.J. KNEW HIS JERSEY WAS NOT WORTH $1,000 AND HE KNEW HE WAS GETTING “SOMETHING EXTRA”. THAT SAID, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ALL THE BCS DIVISION SCHOOLS PAY THE PLAYERS MINIMUM WAGE AT 40 HOURS PER WEEK FOR THE ENTIRE TIME THEY ARE ON SCHOLARSHIP AND IN SCHOOL — INCLUDING SUMMERS. THE BCS SCHOOLS CAN AFFORD IT AND FOR THE ONES THAT SAY THEY CAN’T, INCREASE YOUR TICKET PRICES OR DROP THE SPORT. THIS IS ONLY FAIR FOR THE PLAYERS WHO WORK SO HARD AND SACRIFICE THEIR HEALTH AND BODIES FOR THEIR TEAMS. YES, THEY DO THIS FOR THEMSELVES IN HOPES OR A PRO CAREER (SOME OF THEM DO), BUT WHY NOT LET THEM HAVE A LITTLE CASH AND BE ABLE TO ENJOY THEIR COLLEGE YEARS A LITTLE? I WAS BROKE AND WORKED BY WAY THRU UGA, BUT BY WORKING I HAD A LITTLE CASH TO TAKE MY GIRL OUT FOR A MOVIE OR A LUNCH AND TO BUY A FEW CLOTHES. ITS TIME FOR THE BCS SCHOOLS TO PUT UP OR SHUT UP AND IT THE NCASS DOESN’T LIKE IT, THEN THEY CAN GO TO HELL.

Georgia looks terrible in every facet of the game. They were completely out-coached. Mike Bobo has got to be the worst play caller that I have seen. I mean it is 3rd and 5 and he calls a play that has all the receivers running routs 20 yards down the field and all we needed is 5 yards to keep the possible game winning drive alive. He plays not to lose, when he should be calling plays to win the game. Bobo is about as sorry as it gets when it comes to play calling.

Change the Attitude

I have to believe that we need to get back to basics and start with greatly enhancing the players’ attitudes and try to present a more professional look among the team. When they have made a good play, get up, congratulate one another and get back to the huddle. ACT LIKE YOU HAVE BEEN THERE BEFORE. Surely it’s not the first time you’ve made a stop, gained 3 yards, caught a pass, made a touchdown or grabbed an interception. The jumping up and down, beating your chest, shaking your hand in front of your face (what is up with that anyway?), running toward the crowd, all the thug-like hand motions…knock it off. Act a little more professional. Respect yourselves, the coaches, the fans and your opponents. All that jumping around and acting like nuts does nothing but reflect badly on you and the program. Besides, YOU would not have made that play without your teammates doing their job. Why can’t the coaches get that through to them? I am an alumni and been watching the Dawgs for over 50 years and I cannot remember when I have been more embarrassed by their actions on and off the field. I, for one, am sick of it. …by the wayand starting off 0-2 in the SEC, you have to realize that none of you are “all that”. Get back to basics, act like professionals, play like we know you can and make the Dawg Nation proud.

Tim, quit writing about AJ Green. We just don’t care anymore about his situation anymore. What happened, why Adams is still talking about it. He broke the rules and pays the price.
Write instead about the kid who is and deserves to be our #1 WR. Kris Durham. That’s who you should be writing about.
Write instead about WHY the kids don’t know the rules. Isn’t there some class that the athletic dept teaches these kids the rules? Find out why that isn’t happening. I would think the coaches and AD would make sure that the kids are aware of the basic rules.

Adams is working for Green? I would think he would be working for the University and thinking of kicking Green off the campus, not representing him. What do these fraternity houses do that is so wrong that the need to kick them off campus is the only alternative, when you have a key player associating with a gangster, maybe effecting the outcome of Georgia games. This certainly would explain the under productivity of this team. They are on the take.

Hey Awful – NCAA reported that Dareus was most forthcoming and honest of any player that they ever interviewed. Exactly the opposite of Dez Bryant who got the entire 2009 season off for lying
(well he did play against UGA early in the season). I have to believe that AJ Green was not totally forthcoming……he may have been honest about not travelling to Miami but I suspect he was less than totally honest about the jersey. So he got 2 games for the misconduct and 2 more for lying to the judge.
Why does it require the President of the university to hold a meeting and tell the Athletic Dept that everyone will follow the rules, students will attend class, and everyone will stay out of trouble??. The fact that Adams felt such was necessary is a biting commentary on where the Athletic Program at UGA has gone………

ZM was on moron and he is gone. The other UGA moron trouble makers, all except D. Jackson and M. Robinson, are still on campus. If any team leader stands up and says ENOUGH ……….then it just might divide this team. I say that is what has happened and THAT IS WHY UGA is not playing decent ball. We are a divided ……….selfish squad right now.
If the voters do not like the POTUS is it “becaus of R—-m” and that is the UGA affliction. The main man is AJ Green and his single, selfish action has destoyed UGA ball for this year.
With that in mind, I as Coach would let the under class men play now and let AJ and two or three others walk. Set the tone now.

UGA won vs Arkansas their first SEC title in nearly 20+ years under Richt. Then, UGA was a well coached, oiled football team with heads up players like R Brown, and D Greene and Pollack and Thomas Davis and Sean Jones and Musa Smith, etc.
In that SEC title game in the Dome, UGA blocked a punt from Arkasas that was a bad, low snap and it may have even bounced and UGA picked it up and scored. TD !! Heads up ball, baby.
Last Saturday the same thing happened to Arkansas and in about the same spot around the Ark 45 and the snap was low, bouncing and UGA TURNED THEIR BACK on an opportunity to score or at LEAST PUT UGA in a spot for a nice FG. The punter, after he quit guffawing, RAN for a 16 yd first down. See? A tale of two teams this is.
UGA under this same man is only NOW going through the motions. We are lifeless and flat just like Mark Richt. He has family health issues, he wants to be a missionary and all are wonderful but resign please.
This comment proves all of the nay sayers right. 2010 will be one ugly year. Sad, it should not be happening and it will adversely impact our 2011 recruiting too. Too much un certainty going forward at UGA.

82Dawg – I understand the law……….however, the exemption is essentially meaningless for a public figure like AJ Green……….If UGA was interested in letting its fans know what happened, we would know regardless of any withholding of information. All UGA fans believe that the NCAA is out to get them, but there may be a real basis for the difference in suspensions for Green and Dareus. On the other hand, I have no love for the NCAA (who does?) and Green and UGA may have been treated unfairly.

Can’t gripe about AJ Green getting suspended.
But it does seem strange that Dareus accepts an outright $1700 gift just free and clear and only gets a two game suspension, while Green sells a jersey for $1000 and gets suspended twice as long. If there are any “extra” factors there that influence the decisions, then release all the info. If Green was not as forthcoming as he should have been, then tell us. If this is going to be a “teaching moment”, then let everyone know what the lesson should be…and maybe it’ll keep another player from a similar action in the future.

Adams is playing light on this issue. It is obvious how ignorant he is on the importance of A J Green to this football team. Every team has one player, that if they lose that one player, the objectivity of the team is totally effected. A J Green was and is that player for this year, for this team.
Two weeks in a row. Two games in a row, that we have lost by a small enough amount, that if A J Green was active, there is the likelyhood that he would have made the difference. I presented this very example several weeks ago. I said then, maybe in slightly different wording, “If we miss winning a game that he is out, by one touchdown, or each game by one touchdown, would A J Green not be worth at least the average of one touchdown per game?”
We lost by that margin, and yes, he would have mede the difference, numerous times over, on numerous plays. My point is this. The punishment does not meet the offense. Too long of a punishment, for this low level amount of a rule break, when others committed worse offenses, with people who are agents. The idiot that caused the problem does not even claim to be an agent, he claims to be a collector, and he supposedly still has the jersey.
The NCAA may think they are helping, but, what good does this do in the long run, to the quality of one team to be put in question, because of as minor of an offense as this one? What if UGA wins out, all of the games, once A J Green returns? What does that say about the quality of our team, in comparison to the last two games? Especially if there is not way otherwise to win the east and to play the west winner, which probably will be Alabama.
