ATHENS – University of Georgia president Michael Adams said the school did everything it could to get star wide receiver A.J. Green’s suspension reduced, but he did not quarrel with the NCAA’s rejection of the appeal.
“It’s certainly not too light,” Adams said of Green’s four-game suspension,”and yet I’m not in a position to criticize the NCAA. They are trying to send a message about contact with agents and agent runners and representatives.”
Green was suspended for selling his Independence Bowl jersey to a person the NCAA considers an agent, former North Carolina football player Chris Hawkins. An NCAA committee late Friday rejected Georgia’s attempt to get the suspension shortened.
“I don’t think A.J. knew what he was dealing with,” Adams said, meaning an agent. But the fact Hawkins met the NCAA definition of an agent is “part of why I believe they stuck with four games instead of less,” Adams said.
Adams, in an interview before Saturday’s game against Arkansas, said the university got “the best counsel and advice you can get to make an appeal. . . . I think the university did everything to help [Green] that the university could have done.”
Adams acknowledged it “clearly” would be against the rules for a player to sell a jersey to a non-agent as well.
“It was a mistake, and frankly I think it’s time to move on,” Adams said. “He’s a star player and an important player, I understand all of that. . . . But you don’t build a whole season around one player.
“At the end of the year, maybe he’s fresher than some of the defensive backs that are covering him. I’ll try to look on the bright side.”
++++++++++++++
On another topic, Adams said he spoke to “every employee” of the Athletic Association in a recent staff meeting, delivering the message that he wants a stop put to the off-field problems on the football team. Nine players have been arrested this year.
“They don’t like it any better than I do, and I think they’ll deal with it,” Adams said of the athletics staff. “You’re dealing with 19-year-olds, and we have more [arrests] in the general student body than I would like. But we have had too much in the football team. And so we expect the coaches and the AD’s to provide role models and leadership for their players, and I told the whole Athletic Association staff that.”
He reiterated what he calls the “three Adams rules”:
“You follow NCAA and SEC guidelines. You go to class. And you stay out of trouble.
“You don’t have to be Phi Beta Kappa, but you have to do those three things to play here,” Adams said. “It’s an honor to put on the jersey that says Georgia. And so we expect people to represent us in a positive fashion, on and off the field. That is not an unrealistic expectation.”
Adams wasn’t specific on how the coaches and athletics staff should address the problem. “I don’t tell them how to do their jobs, and they don’t tell me how to do mine,” he said. “But the message there is pretty clear, and I think everybody is in sync now.”
Adams said new athletic director Greg McGarity “feels as strongly or more strongly about [the issue] than I do, and I’m going to depend on him and the coaches to manage it.”

I am sick of watching this bs the last couple of weekends, the offensive coordinator needs to go as well as seriously the though of calling Boise before someone else beats us to it! To hell with 4 and 5 star recruits! Look at what happens on the field! How many four star recruits does Boise State have? The defense is sickening and the offense line is not what I thought that they would be! I would rather watch Athens Tech play!

Apparently everyone knew this was cheating but three people: School Prez, Football Coach, and the player involved. Ludicrous! As soon as he heard someone say “I’ll give you a thousand dollars for a shirt” every mental whistle should have been blowing, “Warning, Warning, Warning, Something is not right here…College career IN JEOPARDY…WARNING, WARNING, WARNING!”

If selling a jersey is against the rules, it’s against the rules. I don’t have a problem with that. Any time any player gets caught selling football memorabilia the punishment should be the same. If that’s four games, it’s four games. I don’t have a problem with that, either.
Claiming that some common street thug drug dealer is an “agent” just because he is a football player groupie, then implying that selling the jersey to him, instead of to any other random fan, is going too far. Unless the NCAA sends each player a list of every person they consider an agent, it’s impossible for a player to distinguish an agent from anyone else in the world. The fact that selling a jersey to anyone should be all that matters. Whether the NCAA considers that person an agent, a fan, or a circus clown should have nothing to do with it.
All that aside, if UGA can’t win without one particular player, they have much deeper problems than AJ Green. After today’s game, that looks to be the case.

The bad news is that the Football team really, really sucks. Come on Dawgs redeem yourself and beat the other Bulldogs next Saturday.

I cannot for the life of me understand how these HUGE major college football schools, especially in the SEC, continue to allow the NCAA to dictate such ludicrous, unfair, and program damaging rulings against them. Also the players are pampered too much. I played college football as quarterback, offensive captain, and team captain during the period 1962-1966. In order to earn my “full football scholarship”, I had to maintain at least a B [3.0] average, borrow money from the National Defense Student Loan Program at the insistance of the school, AND work as a janitor at night after the season at a local junior high school cleaning 19 classrooms, 4 bathrooms, and 2 hallways each and EVERY night from November until the summer break. Myself and two other civilians cleaned the entire school during the summers. All of that money went to the school and my training table meal ticket was automatically cut off each year immediately after the last game of the football season. It was root little pig or die. I have no regrets and went on to a successful military career. Players during these times have it too easy. I realize with such emphasis on materialism nowadays within our society in general along with the fact that today’s student-athletes [and their families] are basically broke and often financially destitute — this makes makes them easy targets for unscrupulous characters of ALL types such as agents, win-at-all-costs coaches, overly enthusiastic alumni, and spurious interlopers. But, I say remove this guy A.J. Green from the team and when any other players are arrested, tried, and convicted of crimes, they too should be sent packing. That will clean up the program — trust me. Sometimes you must win off the field before you can win on the field and once again there will be a place for student-athletes who possess character, morals, a penchant for hard work, and strong values.

The same people who think AJ Green is a victim, the same people who think the Athens Police pick on UGA athletes, the same people who blame Mark Bradley, Jeff Schultz for writing anything negative, the same guys who think everyone else cheats but Georgia, the same people who think the referree cheated Georgia, the same people who think the SEC picks on Georgia, the same people who make excuses everytime we lose a game, the same people who start pointing fingers at everyone else to cover UGA and its flaws, the same people who will always think UGA is a top 10 program, …well you are all WRONG and are LOSERS…..JUST LIKE WE WERE TODAY and the staff in place is the problem and every other school and coach loves playing this second rate staff..

Shoot at least we won the 1980 National Championship! Who cares if we only beat three teams with winning records that year? (Forida 8-4; South Carolina 7-5; and Notre Dame 9-2-1 but tied winless GT). I know many media outlets like ESPN called us the weakest National Championship team ever….but hey…We still won it! With our CURRENT COACH we had better enjoy that 1980 title because we likely will never see another!

You doggies are going to have to give your head coach a raise. Looks like he gets his haircut at home with a bowl over his head.Or maybe he should spend less time in the tanning booth and spend some of that cash getting a decent haircut from someone other than a farm boy.
Don’t think AJ would have made a difference, looks like a bad year for the dawgs. 0-2, how many of you were not worried about SC or Ark? Looks like they took you to the woodshed and beat your so called 4 and 5 star recruits pretty bad. Too bad Bama does a better job of evaluating talent and then actually doing something with it.
Why would Crowell want to go to UGA when, he could actually have a good chance at the Heisman at Bama?
Nice game doggies, a few more in jail, and you won’t be able to beat Vandy.
