Georgia will have to play without star wide receiver A.J. Green for two more games, including Saturday’s against Arkansas in Sanford Stadium.
An NCAA committee Friday rejected Georgia’s appeal of the four-game suspension handed Green last week for selling his Independence Bowl jersey for $1,000 to a person the NCAA considers an agent.
Georgia had hoped to have the suspension shortened, but the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee, after hearing the appeal by conference call Friday morning, informed UGA officials late in the day that the original penalty will stand.
That means Green, who sat out Georgia’s first two games, will remain sidelined for the crucial game against No. 12 Arkansas and the Sept. 25 game at Mississippi State. He’ll be eligible to return for the Oct. 2 game at Colorado.
While the original suspension was imposed by NCAA staff, the appeal was heard by a committee consisting of officials from colleges and conferences across the country. The committee rejected Georgia’s appeal without public comment. The ruling was disclosed by UGA on Friday evening.
“We respect the committee’s decision and will focus on moving forward,” athletic director Greg McGarity said in a statement.
The NCAA’s investigation of Green, a junior who is widely projected as a high NFL draft pick if he turns pro next year, began in July as part of a series of probes at a number of schools into dealings between football players and agents.
The NCAA said last week that “according to the facts of the case submitted by Georgia,” Green sold the jersey to “an individual who meets the NCAA definition of an agent,” later identified as former North Carolina football player Chris Hawkins.
The NCAA defines an agent as “any individual who markets or promotes a student-athlete.” Hawkins has denied being an agent. It also would be against NCAA rules for a student-athlete to sell memorabilia to a non-agent.
Georgia has declined to release the “facts of the case” or other related documents. In response to an open-records request from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, UGA said it would not release the documents because doing so “would directly identify one particular student,” Green. The university said that would violate a federal law protecting student education records, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Green’s four-game suspension has drawn criticism from some Georgia fans because of another recent case in which Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus received a two-game suspension for accepting about $1,800 in benefits from an agent. In that case, the NCAA said Dareus received a two-game ban, rather than four games, “based on mitigating circumstances.”
Another recent case, involving Middle Tennessee State quarterback Dwight Dasher, resulted in the same penalty as Green’s. The NCAA on Thursday suspended Dasher for four games for accepting $1,500 in “an impermissible loan from an individual in the community.”
Asked for comment on Friday’s ruling and the reason the appeal was denied, NCAA associate director of public and media relations Stacey Osburn said by e-mail “we do not have any further to share” beyond confirming the decision.
Georgia coach Mark Richt had held out hope that the appeal might put Green back on the field for Saturday’s game, but Richt said several times this week that the coaches were preparing the game plan on the premise that Green would not be available.
In a statement after Friday’s ruling, Richt said: “Our concentration is the same as the last two weeks, which is preparing for the next game. We’ll look forward to A.J.’s return for the Colorado game on Oct. 2.”
Green, who can continue to practice with the team during the suspension, was not available for comment.
His teammates were hoping for, but not necessarily expecting, good news on the appeal.
“It’s not something you can bank on because you never know,” tight end Aron White said at mid-week. “We’ve been preparing to where if he comes back great but if he doesn’t we’ve got to still go out and get these games. We’re still the Bulldogs, with or without A.J.”

No surprise, Dareus at Alabama takes $2000, and gets a 2 game suspension. Green takes $1000, and gets a 4 game suspension. The SEC refs got Georgia in the LSU game last year too. This is absurb.
But it doesn’t matter. You gotta win without AJ. But AJ really let his team down. Big time.

Don’t worry brother AJ we will both be back on the field in due time, although Urban told me that I can come back next week I know that it is the right thing to do to hold up your punishment for a jersey. And also wanted to mention,
although I do believe 4 games is too much, selling your jersey is a little more black in white in violation than going to a party. Then again, we don’t know if AJ Green lied to NCAA investigators when they came to Athens originally to investigate.
Some players have had much tighter punishments just for holding up an investigation, and not to say he did, but it is possible.

Actually, no he isn’t that strict on them. I can name SEVERAL cases where he should have been more strict.
For one, Alec Ogletree was not suppose to play in the first game because of a warrant, and he got to play in the last quarter. We had players that it took two domestic assaults (violent ones too) in order to get kicked off the team.
I love the Dawgs, and I support my own school through and through, but no one can say CMR hasn’t been a little lenient.

Kicking Green off the team for doing something that is only illegal to the NCAA would be crazy. Then he would have to remove everyone else that has broken the law because thats worse anyway right? Doing something that is against the law is worse than doing something thats against the NCAA rules? If he does that he effectively loses his two best players in ealey and green and then he loses a s!*t ton of games and then he is criticized and eventually fired. The NCAA is an effing joke. They CLAIM they are concerned about the student-athlete yet they don’t suspend kids who make helmet to helmet contact and injure other players. Yet, sell your jersey and you sit for four games? They are all high and mighty about kids going to classes but an athlete who has a chance of going pro cannot hire an agent? Hell, maybe all employers and recruiters should be banned from campuses and students contacting potential employers before graduation should be expelled.

Today’s NCAA setup is modern day slavery. Some of these athletes come from very poor socio-economic backgrounds. They can’t have a part time job to earn some spending money but the NCAA and the schools make millions and millions of dollars in profit off these young people. How does that make sense. We need to pay these athletes a stipend so they don’t have to live like moles. The system needs to be changed. I don’t know what the UGA officials argued but is it even legal to tell an athlete that they can’t sell property which belongs to them.

The NCAA is so logical, so consistent. Whatever! What’s up with the four-game to two-game reduction for Alabama? Is the NCAA going to strip South Carolina of last week’s win because some of their players got unsanctioned financial perks by staying in a hotel at a dirt-cheap price? I understand the Massoli deal is a technical issue, but still, come on, how crazy is it that a guy who is dismissed after a burglary charge at Oregon faces no suspension when he goes to play for another team? Why the constant delays by the NCAA on the case? Why the run-around? The NCAA needs to explain their actions. The juxtaposition of these current cases is truly unsettling. There is a real belief now among many UGA fans that there is some unseen agenda at play against them. I have long been annoyed by conspiracy-minded screaming. My buddies feel that this is tied back to this 2007 day in Jacksonville, a long-held, institutional grudge against Richt and his decision against Florida. I try not to be that guy who buys into such talk. But I’m getting pulled that way more and more. By the way, why did the NCAA move to tighten restrictions on celebrations this past year? After last year’s phantom celebration by A.J. Green was flagged, there were official apologies from the SEC. And I figured the NCAA would finally relax this rule and let the players have some fun. Nope. They went the other way. We’re looking at touchdowns taken off the scoreboard in the future. What the heck? Where’s the logic?

I still think the NCAA can fark off about these things. These kids for the most part don’t come from particularly wealthy families. They go on athletic scholarships that A) absolutely do NOT allow them to have even an on-campus part-time job, and B) require them to pretty much be on-campus ALL YEAR LONG. These kids don’t have any money, and no way to make any money, and yet they’re required to stay at school 24-7. Is it any wonder that so many of them get in trouble for stupid things like underage drinking and shenanigans? Or that they try to make a little beer money on the side, so that they can at least go out and not have to limit their entire college existence to the weight room, practice field, class, and the dorm, as the NCAA apparently wants all student athletes on scholarship to do? But the NCAA and the universities have to protect their cash-cows, don’t they?

Did they really have to make us wait all day to give us this BS? If we lose this game Richt is done IMO. I am fed up with this crap year after year with the same old excuses. We recruit better than anybody but we always seem to get beat by teams with lesser talent. I’m starting to remember why I quit following UGA and college football in the mid-late 90’s. Whether he played or not, I still stand by my argument that our coach is a man that handles everything “internally” and sometimes when the boys are sitting on the bench, they should really be sitting behind bars.
Sorry, but its about time he has a zero tolerance policy. Remember when he threatened to bench anyone that had a foul against GT last year…we had maybe one (if I recall correctly) penalty the whole game after a season of penalties right and left.

Now that Washedup Early has replaced KnowLess Moron as the “feature back” at Sanford & Son Stadium, I seriously doubt he could have two game-changing fumbles in consecutive weeks.
Ryan Mullett throws for a mile-and-a-half, but the Mutts will win by 10. Something like 55-45; a score indicative of a great defensive struggle ….

The NCAA probably left the penalty like it was because they didn’t believe Green didn’t have something to hide.
Why would Green even talked to a shyster , hustler, low life like Chris Hawkins. Green must have really thought he was a big man when Hawkins , America’s number one roll model , payed him attention.

As for the harshness of the suspension compared to others: I think perhaps when he was initially questioned about it, AJ must have lied to the investigators, whereas the others maybe came right out and admitted it. That’s the only thing I can think of as to why he’d get four games as opposed to less, as well as why his appeal was denied. If he hadn’t lied, it might have been one or two games and no harm done.

You’re going to see great athletes missing their junior and senior year and seasons because the system doesn’t work.
“Obviously something has to be changed. You’ve got universities making millions of dollars off these kids and they don’t get paid. The majority of college athletes who come in on scholarship come in [with] nothing. That’s where you have a problem. You’re making all this money off these kids and you’re giving them crumbs and then you’re surrounding these kids with money and telling them not to touch it,” he said.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
The reason the Alabama player got less time, and Florida players get a pass. The NCAA gets more $$$ from Alabama and Florida, and Saban and Meyer are hooked up with the NCAA, just like USC was for years until the Reggie Bush fiasco…………
Do you really think USC would have been punished for violations if it had not got in the public media about Reggie Bush?? I dont think so lol
Real reason AJ is punished more games is to set an example for any player who might take revenue away from the NCAA from the sales of Jerseys etc.

Listen Muttlanders, the reason why Dareus got just 2 games and AJ Greenbacks got 4 is because Alabama SELF-REPORTED the infraction. When you approach the NCAA FIRST and tell them what happened and they investigate and find nothing else, you get the 2 game suspension. But when one of your players, (1) turns up in rumors about a Miami agent party, and then (2) shouts to the heavens that ‘I was never in Miami’, he didn’t tell the WHOLE story about what he might’ve been involved in. EVERYONE knows when the NCAA comes to your campus, they don’t just limit their investigation to the issue at hand. If they find ANYTHING else, they will bust you for it – this isn’t the legal system you’re dealing with and the NCAA is not bound to look into only the issue at hand.
When you cry innocence on one hand but the other hand is even slightly dirty – and the NCAA finds out about it ***without you [thUGA] coming to them about it from the jump***, you ask for 4 games. Add to this that the WHOLE REASON why the NCAA has a rule against sales of memorabilia happened because of ug[sic]a, what do you expect??? Stop whining and learn not to rely on just one player to win!
Richt = Bobby Bowden…except Bobby got much better talent than Richt can get now with Alabama, LSU, Florida, Miami, etc., drawing from the pool. He’s too lenient. He’ll win you 8-9 games a year, but he’s not gonna win you a national title. Wake up from your doggy dreams and accept the truth.

Several years ago there was a linebacker who played for Oklahoma named Brian Bosworth; he coined the perfect words for the NCAA “National
Communist Against Athletes!” This is just another one of their BS performances to show people that they are perfect; I would bet the farm that not one of them has never made a bonehead mistake before, “the penality does not fit the crime.” The NCAA has proven this year that they are not consistent on their decisions concerning suspensions. That committee needs to be appealed, and a fait committee formed. Another shot at Georgia by the NCAA; could it been because UGA did have a legitimate shot at playing in Atlanta for the SEC crown? UGA athetes are penalized by the NCAA very harsh, WHY? Other schools placed penalities against their players that did worst things than A.J. and they are playing tommorrow! The NCAA needs to express the reasoning behind their false findings, but they choose not to respond to their decision. The NCAA is punishing this athlete to harshly, not only to mention the university, fans, and alumni.
NCAA, you suck!

What I can’t believe is the seniors not voting Green off the team . That’s the kind of leadership we have on our team now. I have heard that Green is remorseful but everybody is after they get caught for something that’s not right . Green didn’t give a da## about his teammates before he got caught. And I would repay the consideration to Green if I was a senior on this team.

The NCAA is the one on thin ice in my opinion. A few more seasons of this crap and the big time programs will tell the NCAA to “F” off. The board of regents determines the academic viability of an institution, while the NCAA merely profits from TV contracts of major conferences/programs. At some point, the SEC and USC, Miami, TX, ND, and other “relevant” programs will say, enough…We’ll play football in OUR stadiums and F off NCAA. Guess what, the NFL has deeper pockets, and we play better football than those who follow your rules. Take away 1/3 of a 1st round draft pick’s final season (after already suffering a loss) in Green and away let that THUG at UT (Ra”Dick Rogers) off with nothing for a major bar fight, not to mention the Vol Hookers from last years recruiting circuit. OK. This is a blog about a UGA player. You all read the title…and I’d wager several of you read the article. So why in the world are there idiots calling people “homers”? A Journalist should be unbiased and objective. Bloggers do not have that same requirement. WTF are some of you thinking? Here is the news…UGA fans post on UGA blogs. A UGA fan posting on a UGA blog is not a homer–they are merely a fan. The same thing happens on every team’s blog all over the country. Anyone surprised to find UGA fans posting UGA sympathetic things on a UGA blog is dumb as a rock.
Next, the suspension is too long–based on the facts made available to the public. If nothing more has gone on, the NCAA’s decision is horendous.
Finally, Alec Ogletree was suspended and did not play in the opener. His twin brother…who also sports A. Ogletree on his jersey, played on special teams in game one.

Every school and program has compliance officers who explan the rules of play to the athletes. It is not a comparaive thing, in my opinion. You were informed that if you did this action, whatever it is, you can expect a punishment. Don’t compare AJ’s trnsgressions to anyone else. Like we try to teach ou own, “non college superstar” kids, here are the rules and here is the consequence. To blame it on anyone else is alued at about $80, and he decided because o ego that his is worth way more, despite the rules. The kid had to kow that a jersey is worth about $80, but because of masive ego, thought his was worth more than ten times that much. That just makes him stupid and feeling that he is aove the rules becasue of his sature as a player. Dont defend him. The NCAA is messed up, but that does not mean that all programs have to be messed. @Boca…the reason u[sic]ga held him out was because of the Miami agent party issue. His hold out was continued when the NCAA started to dig and uncovered the current issue.
Stop letting red & black color your vision. u[sic]ga is losing institutional control. Richt gets paid a LOT of money to coach your team and control your football program. He HAD to see the current environment (Southern Cal, UNC, etc.). How could he have not???!!! Listen, I don’t like speed traps anymore than any other driver. But if I KNOW BEFOREHAND that the cops are out there – ESPECIALLY in a certain location – I make sure to go the limit AT LEAST until I know they aren’t looking as hard. THIS IS COMMON SENSE. This needs to filter down to the kids you bring into your program.
u[sic]ga is showing itself to be the collegiate athletics equivalent of Hurricane Katrina – you know what’s coming beforehand and yet you do nothing and then want to b!tch & moan when you get bit in the backside afterwards. Stop with your conspiracy theories that the NCAA is somehow ‘out to get you’, stop whining about Florida and their 30+ arrests, clean up YOUR program (i.e., stop winning Fulmer Cups), and tout your school/program and what they have to offer to get the best players.
Look at it from the NCAA’s perspective – their AD is caught drunk with red draws – that don’t belong to his wife – in his lap in his BMW…their players are getting arrested for stupid stuff in the offseason…and their star player thinks he can sell a jersey with no one finding out the back story. This is looking like ‘lack of institutional control’.

NCAA=Big Brother is Watching (and is worth a lot of money.)
The NCAA finacial statements for 2008 are available for download. I Googled “NCAA Financial Statements.”
KPMG did the audit. Here’s a short breakdown of their “income statement”:
Total Revenues: – $633,453,972
Expenses:
Distrubution to Div. 1 members – $359,349,169
Div. 1, II and III championships and programs – $118,654,394
Association-wide programs – $108,882,664
Management and genral expenses – $26,060,135
Total expenses: $612,946,562
Change in net assets: **$24,814,212** (Would be “net income” if it were a private company)
Net assets-beginning of year: $276,312,342
Net assets-end of year: $301,126,544
Bottom line: The NCAA is an organization worth over $300 million (in 2008)

I’m a UGA grad (1975) and season ticket holder. While I think the NCAA tends to be be inconsistent in its enforcement, I must agree that A.J. Green deserves some sort of suspension. (Four games – I’m not sure why 33% of the schedule, but …) Surely he knew the selling of a game jersey (I assume a souvenir of the Independence Bowl given to all the kids who dressed) was a violation of the NCAA rules. I don’t know A.J., but I assume he’s a good kid who made a serious error in judgment. I think the suspension sends a pretty clear message to everyone in collegiate athletics – stay within the rules or face the wrath of the NCAA enforcement folks.

Screw the NCAA , Zack –I agree. AJ should have known better –that’s not the point; The point is the NCAA has NO business telling someone what they can & can’t do. The NCAA is like a polotician; once they get the power they abuse it. Once these players get their millions they should sue the NCAA & let the Supreme Court decide. Funny how an employer can recruit potential students for a job but a NFL agent can’t. I hope the day will come when a few colleges break away from the NCAA. Could you imagine offering players a chance to play outside the limitations of the NCAA? That would be a MAJOR selling point.

@5150 P.O.A.D – you are wrong. Most major schools (with the exceptions of Southern Cal, Ohio State, and a FEW others) own their OWN copyrights to their logos, uniforms, mascots, – even their colors (! – court cases in Louisiana ruled so in regards to some t-shirts that used LSU’s colors but not the actual name “LSU”) and license them to the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC – headquartered here in Atlanta). The NCAA only makes regulations regarding depicting student-athletes while they have eligibility. Coaches – especially coaches of big time universities – generally have their OWN marketing arrangements for their names, images, etc.
How do I know this? A year’s worth of research when we started our t-shirt company. SCHOOLS/UNIVERSITIES control their copyrights, trademarks, and images, NOT the NCAA – just talk to God-talented artist Daniel Moore and his noble fight against the U. of Alabama about that – and license them to the CLC. NCAA regulations apply only to schools who are dutiful and voluntary members of it. u[sic]ga is definitely one of those. Boycotting the NCAA does nothing. They control player/coach regulations, bowl games, etc. only because their membership AGREES to those regulations. When u[sic]ga violates those, they are violating NCAA regulations that they AGREED TO FOLLOW IN THE FIRST PLACE. For you yahoos that want to leave the NCAA, u[sic]ga is more than welcome to leave and join the NAIA or whatever…good luck keeping SEC membership and all the other financial perks that come with that and NCAA membership.

North GA Retiree , YOU are missing the (larger) point. The POINT is not that he was suspended for breaking a rule, or that he would be the difference in the outcome of a game. The POINT IS that the rule was there in the first place. A player has to be removed from HS for 3-yrs to go to the NFL, and needs to go to college (or play ball somewhere) to do that. The ‘rules’ are in place before they arrive, so they really have no choice in the matter, and I believe it is morally WRONG to make millions on these guys while telling them that they can’t sell their own cloths. Tell me, wonder how much money the NCAA makes of players like GREEN by selling hundreds & thousands of the #8 jersey?

So UGA players, keep doing what you have been doing, like stealing helmets, hit and run, dealing with agents. Green over the years as an example of an athlete who conducts himself “the right way.” Now it appears that the one constant, the one bright spot of this UGA team is just as corrupt and dishonest as the rest of the troublemakers. CMR has known the real story now for a month, he’s just not saying because his a$$ is on the line. And if you don’t think there’s more to this story than meets the eye, then you’re just plain stupid. If Richt had anything between his legs he’d suspend A.J. for the season, red-shirt him and let him have next year to prove himself to his teammates, coaches, fans, school and to NFL execs, who just automatically shaved 5 mil off of any potential signing bonus due to character issues. Hope the 1000 clams was worth it A.J. To CMR, I can hear him already in the postgame interview: “Well even though we’re 1-2, we’re thankful we still have our season ahead of us. All of our goals are still attainable, it’ll be just a tougher road to get there. Our guys are disappointed, but I’m confident we’ll bounce back with a great showing on the road at Miss. It could be that since they control all of their own copyrights, they deal directly with the NCAA with that. I’m not sure when it comes to non-CLC schools. I doubt it, however. Why does that make it alright for fans to shine a negative light on the university with their hateful, distasteful, and embarrassing comments. It takes a lot of work to build an image, and very little to tear it down. Remember that. Like I said earlier, no university no football team. Keep it in perspective.
Bottom Line
September 17th, 2010
9:23 pm
Main thing we UGA fans need to do is:
1. Recognize AJ is out.
2. Recognize that CMR is in. Like it or not…it is the fact. Agree with previous guys. Richt can retire here if he wants. I support that. Rather have Richt than anyone else out there coaching right now. At least he does not tell lies.
3. Rally around the troops. We need the support of everyone to get through what may be a difficult year. Constructive criticism is great–bloated phrases filled with venom is not.
4. Really…do we want the Boise State coach? Really? Do we really want a former NFL guy as our HC? Really? Do we really want BVG as our representative? Really? We have a coach. IT is exciting to have an experienced coach that is still so young. He is offensive genius. As much as I like Bobo and hope he stays around. I wish Richt would take over the offense–run it and be more hands on on defense as well. Make Bobo assistant HC–give him more administrative stuff and let CMR light a fire under the offense.

Character issues? You act like this guy commited a crime. He made a huge error in judgment but let’s not carried away. I seriously doubt the NFL will “shave” anything off his earning potential.

I think it is time to tell AJ to move on to the NFL. Obviously he knew what he was doing was wrong and could have a major impact on the school and team. He made a decision that affected everyone of his teammates and the goals they set at the beginning of the year. It is time to fully move on without this very selfish young man. By the way, he is not a kid, he is a young man and should be fully held accountable for his actions. GOOD BYE AJ!

James Madison’s coach had an interesting comment before the VT game. He said that the top 6 or 7 FCS schools could be competitive playing FBS opponents. They allow only 63 scholarships in the FCS.
N. Dakota St., who beat Kansas, lost last week to Northern Iowa and dropped to #18 in the FCS poll this week. Northern Iowa is the team that had 2 short FG attempts blocked in the last 7 seconds to fall to Iowa, 17-16 last season. You just never know when it’s going to happen.

This is the problem with You UGA fans, who by far are the worst people to be around on a game day with the exception of LSU fans. The first thing you guys do is start pointing fingers at other programs and what their players got other offenses. That is exactly what Phil Fulmer did while at Tennessee.
Now onto AJ Green and his case. If you guys do not realize it or do not want to face the facts, AJ was not truthful with the NCAA and it caught up with him. He was used by an Agent, and a drug dealer and now is under the microscope with the N.C. State Attorney interviewing Marvin Austin about his knowledge and what he and who he asked to get involved. Be thankful that the full investigation did not take place in the spring and this would have cost AJ his entire junior year.
Now you UGA fans need to get a grip and understand you are on the verge with a loss on Saturday to Arkansas to falling to new lows…and CMR will not be a favorite.
One more thing you guys need to understand….When a high high number of media, athletic supporters are on a coach and put a coach on the hot seat list, very very rarely does that coach come off that hot seat and is usually fired or not retained withing the next 3 years….this is year 2 of the hot seat talk..and a BCS title and SEC title ARE NOT in the bulldogs near future…You can not turn back now..Days are numbered..and too many teams are getting better while UGA is staying the same or going backwards.

GO Dawgs- Last yr. Murray was coming off an injury in high school, & he also was hurt last yr. as well. I believe in practice. I don’t believe he enrolled early in school either, & apparently was having trouble grasping the offense. UGA was coming off losing Stafford, Moreno, & Massaquio. The O-Line started out not being as good as expected…partly bc of injuries, & inexperence. The running game took a while to get going…partly bc of the O-Line. Remember, they had R. Samuel at RB early in the yr., & didn’t play Ealey until half way through the yr., & I believe C. King was hurt early too. It very well may have been hard for any QB to have a great overall yr. last yr., bc the team around him wasn’t as good as everybody thought it would be. The defense was terrible too. The team wasn’t blocking for Cox, the running game was non-existant, & the receivers weren’t catching the ball. Cox played better at the end of the yr. once the team started to play better. He actually had a lot of passing yards, & I believe he came close to tying Stafford’s TD record to. He just threw too many Ints., which are bad, but that’s not always all the QB’s fault too. Cox had one more yards than most QBs in the SEC last yr. Not all, but most. Cox was also play ing w/ harly any experience also. I think Murray will be better, bc he’s only a Fr., but that doesn’t mean that he should’ve played last yr. though.

Delbert D….I read your post..you are sensible and really get it and keep a level head..so I will speak to you and others can read and get mad, but I know you will get what I am going to say.
Every, I mean Every Four Star or Five Star Player who comes from a disadvantaged background and some that come from middle class background ALL recieve preferential treatment throughout high school and are give extra benefits starting early as their junior years in high school. Now with that being said, alot of these kids get used to “living” a certain lifestyle, this is transferred over to their “college experience’. If anyone thinks that even smaller underfunded programs are exempt from kids getting “freebies” and are given advantages while playing for their respective schools, get a clue. AJ is just one of those guys who got greedy and could not wait for that payday next spring when the NFL will call out his name.
These agents have gotten out of control and the kids who are told not to step over that line by their university or college or institution decide they need that extra money and have to pay the cost with their greed. Now I will be the first to say..these schools make millions off these kids, and their jerseys, likeness, and promote everything on “picture day” during summer pracitce and these kids are taken advantage of. These kids need something and in this current environment and economy it will not be allowed. These College Presidents and NCAA chiefs are affected by the economic downturn and will not give up one dollar. The Bowl Season verse Playoff scenario is proof in pudding.
If the NCAA went to a playoff then every school in FBS would get a cut of every game whether they played in the playoffs or not, that is the root of that deal and it is all about the money.
AJ knew better, he got greedy and he got hooked up with the wrong clowns and now must pay for the greed. But that is the same greed every school President, AD, Football coach uses to go out an get that five star player, that jumbotron, and anything else to promote their “greatness”
Thanks Delbert…

Monkey Says – That is a very succinct description of the problem train. On their web site, The NCAA has a page on commercialism, not only including players not being allowed to accept gifts or sell “their likenesses”, but also the issue of how far the schools should go in capitalizing on the image of the student athletes. They have a short statement that says a committee of member institution representatives is currently addressing these issues.
The NCAA makes a point that they are not affiliated with the BCS, and they do not recognize the BCS final game winner as an NCAA championship. Whether the NCAA takes on the BCS and institutes a playoff system is ultimately decided, as you pointed out, by the schools. It sure looks like the big conferences and big influential schools do not want a playoff. They get more money from the BCS system. How is that going to change?

Delbert D….you are very correct…we have approximately 68 schools in the major conferences sharing most of the bowl money ..around 84% of the bowl money, televsion money and marketing money. These large schools know if they institute a playoff you would have about 40 more FCS schools jumping up to FBS and then the number of schools dividing the pie would go to about 150 schools and the money would be proportioned. That money would be alot more money than they are getting now so their investment would be about 15 to 20% on return of their investment each year..not bad when fortune 500 companies average 6% to 10% margins if lucky. These kids are taken advantage of and on the other hand their greed is alot of their own making.
It is a vicious cycle…

I am a Bama fan, but there is no way that GT would win a NC before UGA. Considering that GT has a cupcake ACC schedule one would think it’s possible, but GT can’t seem to win out each year. GT is irrelevant and will remain so while the SEC keeps winning NC’s. With that aside, I predict a UGA win tomorrow. UGA has a good team that has the potential to become a great team once kinks are worked out. Murray is impressive and will be a force come next year. Green will be back soon enough and then the team will roll through the rest of the schedule. I think that they can compete with UF this yr, that will be a great game to watch. RTR!

I have not sold a jersey since early summer. I started selling jerseys after a guy who said he was “collector” loved my game and said he wanted to buy one. “Georgia has declined to release the “facts of the case” or other related documents. In response to an open-records request from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, UGA said it would not release the documents because doing so “would directly identify one particular student,” Green. The university said that would violate a federal law protecting student education records, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).”
I think that the AJC will still get the “facts of the case.” I read the Act, and it applies to “educational records” and “directory information.” The points being, the information is not “education records”, and the single student has already been identified, as Richt says. The fallacy is that the university’s response posits that a student could literally get away with anything, and as long as he is over 18, he can prohibit the school from releasing information about it.

Saban referred to agents as pimps, but I guess the NCAA refers to agents as dopemen. Cuz…..the dopeman A.J. just sold his jersey to just got popped with coke and weed.
This “agent-like” individual, is not an agent, and A.J. sold his own jersey to him.

Despite his so called winning record at UGA, the most striking thing that RICHT’s football teams has done in the last 2 or so seasons is make mediocre players look great. He will lavish praises on the players of the other team so much to the point that you would think the other team is invincible that I wonder if his players believe this so much that they come out of the gates already defeated. In his last few games his teams have made mediocre players look like “Heisman” winners. Remember how he praised Lattimore.

it saddens me to read some of the comments about AJ on here, but i guess he basically did it to himself…with that being said i don’t know his full reason, maybe he really neede the money, maybe his family needed it or maybe the jersey had no significant value to him..whatever his reason i think AJ has done severe damage to his image with the dawg fans and not sure if he will be looked at favorably later on…I would say that if AJ were to come back his Senior to atone to try and help the dawgs win next year, alot of this would be forgiven and he could take his rightful place as one of the best receivere to play at UGA…this may be selfish of the dawg fans part, but it could restore his image among fans…Depending what happens the rest of the season will go a long way into how AJ is viewed among dawg supporters..I’m not going bash the young man because i don’t know his whole story..he will probably be very rich and have a successful career in the NFL and i hope he does…i know the money would be hard to resist, but if he wanted to really make things right, he could stay and play his Senior year…of course you do risk a career ending injury…I know their are alot of people disappointed in AJ and hopefully people can forgive him…Some never will and this will probably always tarnish his image at UGA among dawg fans for years..I really do wish him well…go dawgs..

just kidding..just trying to rile you up….AJ is a heck of a player….and that is my point,,,look at Alabama, they lost A Heisman trophy winner, and their best Defensive player was suspended and they just moved on, All good teams find a way to win and one player should not be so dominant in a great program….

None of this is going to matter if UGA doesn’t become more physical. Playing “thud” in practice ain’t gonna cut it. Neither is doing a more “intense version of thud.” UGA is soft and will be mediocre until they decide to get serious about football.

The report can be disclosed under FERPA if the names and individually identifying information is redacted. It is not that difficult. UGa is trying to hide something else. I am a true Dawg, for the entire University, and I am sick of the football team embarrassing us. And, I am not talking about losses. I would be happier to lose with intelligent and respectful players, than win with ignorant and dishonest (Ogletree, etc.) players. If you cannot say the same thing, go cheer for an NFL or NBA team.

Say it’s Richt’s move now. If he suspends or “redshirts” Green for the rest of the season, that means the NFL will have to base his on-field performance of his sophomore year, which will be over a year since he has played. That would be the “devaluation” strategy to try to convince Green to come back for another year. I think that is BS.

It’s not surprising that the same organization that created the BCS has created another situation where it seems like it’s rules are randomly applied in favor of whichever team is most popular with the media at the moment. If the NCAA was willing to discuss the reason for the difference in punishments, we might understand and agree that what AJ did was more serious than what the Alabama player did. Without any other information, it sure looks like favoritism.
Using FERPA to circumvent Georgia’s Open Records laws is a load of crap. No one cares about AJ’s education records at UGA any more than they care about Matt Ryan’s high school report card. It’s all about football, TV, and money. Back when the AJC had money and ran a real newspaper, their lawyers would have been in court challenging UGA’s refusal to comply with Georgia law as soon as the doors opened. These days it’s easier to simply post a blog saying Tech players don’t like Georgia players, then sit back and watch the page views add up.

Lets really look at the Razorbacks at UGA game on Saturday as related to AJ Green not being able to play. Last year UGA had a veteran quarterback who probably had his best game as a bulldog by throwing for over 350 yards and 4 touchdowns…i think..not sure on that touchdown number. AJ Green at 7 catches for over 130 yards and two touchdowns. Now you have a darn good freshman quarterback who will have to throw the football to win and play without your best Wideout. UGA will need a big game out of Durham. UGA will need to win the turnovers game and keep Arkansas from scoring under 24 points if UGA is going to have a chance to win. If Arkansas scores early then UGA will really have to keep Murray without turnovers and forced passes.
UGA wins the kicking game, but the experience factor goes to Arkansas…losing AJ in a game like this will hurt as Arkansas will score more points than USC did last week

AJ Green case vs Marcel Dareus case
September 18th, 2010
12:07 am
Fascinating to watch all the dawg fans whining and complaining about the bama player only getting a 2 game suspension and AJ getting 4 games.
Sometimes it is truly amazing just how stupid you dawg fans really are. Its amazing. These 2 cases are like apples and oranges.
The difference is that AJ was not very truthful or very forthcoming. In the case of the Bama player he left the party when he found out an agent hosted it, he brought it up to coach Saban and Alabama compliance. The NCAA didn’t have to come looking for dareus. He and Bama alerted the ncaa to what happened and fully investigated and reported the findings. It was handled in the exact fashion that the NCAA wants these things to be handled. In Green’s case the NCAA had to come to campus to find out what was happening.
And regarding Dareus in his testimony the NCAA stated that Dareus was probably the most truthful student athlete they had ever interviewed. Those are the NCAA’s words. Not mine. Had AJ been as forthcoming perhaps he wouldn’t be serving a 4 game suspension. He has only himself to blame. Get over it dog fans.

We need to pay these athletes a stipend so they don’t have to live like moles – Gooddawg……….These students? are given a free education, free food, free lodging and a monthly stipend. You know, this is life – they need to learn discipline which Marc Richt and his staff are not giving them…….you fire Richt and part of the problem goes away.

[...] you no doubt learned by now from my comrade, Tim Tucker, Georgia’s appeal to have Green’s four-game suspension reduced was rejected by the NCAA. Maybe you believe four games is too harsh of a penalty, or maybe you believe Chris [...]

Mediocre is as mediocre does… If they have mediocre championship UGA would win.
Dump Richt, get someone who wants to win championships!

It appears AJ let his team down like so many others. “Ring of Honor” now seams like a fading memory. He now becomes just another good player at UGA and nothing more. Too bad.

Green lied to the NCAA and that is the worst thing a player can do. They often punish that more than even the offense…see Dez Bryant from last season.
And to the people saying that the transaction was no big deal, they have to be naive youngsters otherwise they would understand that the rules are the way they are because in the past schools and boosters created all types of ways to get around rules.
Such as “buying” shirts from recruits for 20K or in the case of Clemson, players “working” at auto dealerships for exorbinant pay and driving complimentary cars home.

Let the beatings begin. In typical Richt fashion another one of our thugs is caught with his hand in the cookie jar and CMR wants to blame Keeblers. Other top flight programs regardless of the players talent would and have dismissed players under similar circumstances. We will use this as an excuse for failure. Please explain to Boca that this is not Tallahasee.

Perhaps the NCAa should have mandatory 6 game suspensions, no matter the offense. Period. If the six games includes postseason, forfeit the right to go to a bowl for the whole team. Until the NCAA puts its foot down completely, with no more “judgement calls”, this crap will escalate, and folks will compare how one guy got punished vs. some other guy. A second offense means a year of sabatical. A third would be no more NCAA participation.
Easy, quick, attention-getting, to the point, no arguements. Everyone the same.
I am willing to bet we would see a great improvment in student behavior, or more competitive ball games with these students out!

If life, we always have to move on after an era or such, be is in bidnezz or sports. Period.
When UGA saw Walker turn pro with the NJ Generals and Donald Trump, they simply wrnt out ALL SEASON and played big boy call and ended up in the Cotton Bowl …….when it was a biggie bowl …………played Texas and they ( UT ) were only ranked at the time …….#1. UGA defeated them 10-9 annd it will forver be 10-9 in Dallas. UGA the year that Walker bolted ended up in the FINAL rankings around # 4.
NO program rises or falls on the one kid. UGA ………..let us move on without AJ Green. NO games should be be allowed to play and that should create some opportunities for kids that do want to play for UGA ……..now.
Use the UGA post Hershal Walker era as the template. Cotton Bowl, defeated # 1 Texas and final #4 rankings for UGA.
By the way, Walker was only about 5 times better than AJ in every apples to apples category. Walker had dedication …………..see?
Go Dogs.

Those of you who know me know that I have been asking for RIcht’s head since year three. He is a dunce when it comes to game management. Has been, always will be. He is not a “great” coach as many have suggested. He is a great recruiter and a mediocre coach. He can’t take talent to the next level. He can’t get more out his players than what is already there. Just look at all the top ten recruiting classes and the results. I could go on but I will close with…
No national championship with Richt. Never.

Since neither UGA nor the NCAA will release the facts of the case, none of you have a clue as to the details of the case. The AJC has no details of the case and can report nothing to you. Since you do not know anything about the case, what do you base your opinions on?
Wishful thinking?
You are all like Sgt Schultz – you “know nutheeng!”.
Let it go. The important deal is Arkansas and whether Smith can play at CB.

I wish Richt has the guts(or B—-Ls) to get rid of Green. And that other loser Washing Easly. Any coach with any smarts at all knows that people like Green are trouble and are not part of a team—-he is only thinking of himself!!!!!!!!!!!!—-Get a life Richt and pull the plug and move on————–life isnt going to get any worse!!———That Easly guy runs sideways into the defense—what a loser!!!!!!!!!!!—–get rid of the punks and lets play some football man, come on. Act like you got a pair.
Most fans agree with you, but Richt is never going to grow b*lls and be a man.

AJ should hold a press conference now and release ALL the details that the NCAA wants kept secret. All of them. Of course they’d probably call that a violation as well and try to suspend him forever.
I think it’s well beyond time that Congress and holds a public investigation into the racketeering and corruption that is the NCAA.

Richt’s example of “fire” is to take the team to a soup kitchen, or habitat for humanity event, or some other Mother of Theresa B.S.
Which is fine and dandy…but doesn’t win championship anymore.
Saban is a leader and motivator.
Saban doesn’t use ping pong as a recruitment tool.
I am so over Richt and his excuses.
The new AD is gonna run him off….you heard it hear first.

AJ Green knew what he was doing and let GA Team and fans down big time.I believe we can compete with everybody eles on the schedule and can win without Green. Ga should play the new Receivers to gain experience. Since Green is leaving after this year and he put himself before the team we should not let him display his talents for the pros. We need to give the other guys every bit of experience.
