ATHENS — Georgia, which ranks last in the SEC in rushing two weeks into the season, expects to have its tailback tandem intact for the first time this year Saturday against Arkansas.
Caleb King, who missed last week’s game at South Carolina because of a sprained ankle suffered in the season opener, “should practice this week and be fine,” coach Mark Richt said Tuesday.
Washaun Ealey, who was suspended from the opener because of an off-season arrest, returned against South Carolina but seemed less effective without running mate King.
King and Ealey formed a formidable tandem at the position in the second half of last season.
Georgia is averaging 122.5 yards rushing through two games, ranking 89th among the nation’s 120 major-college teams. King had 47 yards on 10 carries against Louisiana-Lafayette, getting just one carry in the second half after injuring an ankle late in the first. Ealey had 75 yards on 19 carries against South Carolina and lost a critical fumble near the goal line late in the third quarter.
The tailbacks’ absences and inconsistency haven’t been the only problems for Georgia’s running game. A veteran offensive line hasn’t been nearly as stellar as expected.
Richt said the run blocking last week was only “fair.”
“If I had a bunch of freshman linemen, I’d say it was a pretty decent day,” Richt said Tuesday. “But for that group of guys, I think we can do better. We’re challenging our runners to get more out of what’s being blocked too.
“That kid from South Carolina did,” he added, referring to freshman Marcus Lattimore’s 182-yard performance against the Bulldogs.
Georgia offensive tackle Josh Davis vowed that the Dogs’ running game will improve.
“We’re going to run the ball, and we’re going to do it very well,” he said. “When we have an experienced offensive line, we should be able to run the ball. I think [the South Carolina game] was a good learning experience, but it’s not going to happen again.”
++++++++++++
Shaun Chapas, Georgia’s starting fullback, is questionable for Saturday’s game because of a sprained ankle, Richt said Tuesday.
Chapas injured the ankle in the first half of the South Carolina game and did not play in the second half.
If Chapas can’t play against Arkansas, Fred Munzenmaier will start at fullback.

Richt agrees with caller who says Dogs were ‘timid’ at times.

Time for this great O line to put up or shut up. Dawgs need to be more physical. They are big and strong but don’t play fast and hit hard. Why I don’t know. If they don’t come around and take the game to the opponent it will be a long season. Now is the time to show your power O line.

We’ve been hearing about this great offensive line all off-season, but what is all the hype based on? Everyone is basing this on all the experience the O line has. Well guess what? Just because the O line has experience, that doesn’t equate to being better. Playing like crap for 2 or 3 years does not equate to being outstanding your junior and senior years. It’s quite possible these guys weren’t good as freshman and sophomores, and they’re still not good as juniors or seniors. Just like the defense, these offense is soft. There is no “dog” in them.

I don’t understand why 2 TBs make you a lot better and if that is the case I’m glad South C. didn’t have 2 great one’s because they beat the he– out of us with only one.
Either one of our TBs should have been enough.

I am so tired of this crap about open up the playbook. He is a redshirt freshmen QB. He knows the darn playbook. It cannot be as complicated as the Oregon playbook or the Michigan playbook and they are both redshirt freshmen tearing it up on Saturdays. The offense is trying to blame it on AJ Green and even Richt is trying to say that is part of the problem by talking about a change in gameplan, etc… The change needs to be with Bobo. Richt got rid of Martinez and that is a good thing. I remember when Tennessee lost David Cutcliffe to Ole Miss and they promoted from within and gave the job to Randy Sanders. He was horrible and almost cost them the NC game in 98. They got rid of him and then Cutcliffe came back. Tennessee was good again and Fulmer was safe. Then Cutcliffe went to Duke and Tennessee had Dave Clawson (Div 2 Coordinator) for half the season and Fulmer was out of a job. Loyalty is admirable but it can get you fired quick in the SEC. Help Bobo get a job at UAB or something so he can feed his 15 kids and either have Richt call the plays or go get a proven OC. Oh yeah, I would comment on running the football but they don’t know how to do that. Last in the SEC? Really Tailback U?

Mark Richt is a good man who is often praised by his fellow coaches. If he doesn’t beat the better teams and can still get us to the Peach Bowl, it is a good season. Just remember he is developing character in these young men and working on graduation rates. Never mind mediocrity for 5 years and early success was with Jim Donnan’s players and Van Gorder as defensive coach.

Just move Bobo back to QB coach and have Coach RIcht dust off some of those films when he was one of the top OC’s in the country.
Back to the topic. If the O-line cannot open holes neither King nor Ealey will get many yards. The Carolina game Ealey was getting hit in the backfield and still making positive yards. Now that is some tough running.

Since dawgtards seem to love living in the past, how about remembering the Jan Kemp trial, which exposed UGA and Vince Dooley for the jokes that they were. My favorite quote from the trial was this one:
O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
The best thing about the trial was that it completely killed Vince Dooley’s shot at Congress, since he was exposed as a fraud and a cheat during the trial. Make no mistake – Dooley knew everything that was going on.
Nothing has changed in the almost three decades since the trial. If anything, the abuses are even worse. Exhibit #1: Jim Harrick and son.
Today the players are even more illiterate and felonious and, well, just plain stupid, as evidenced by their arrest records and record number of penalties. Even Vince Dooley couldn’t have controlled this mob, much less Mark Richt. And now even the AD is a drunk debaucherer.
There’s a reason why UGA is known as The Cesspool of the South.
Congratulations on winning the Fulmer Cup.

Glen coming off of a bout with mono is a bigger deal than expected. It may be another 2-3 games before he’s back to 100 percent. The guards got no push in the run game sat if we don’t step it up we will be in trouble. Why Bobo stopped running off tackle or toss sweeps is a mystery. After watching the game again Rambo played well..he eased off of a head on collision with that big WR in the 2nd half but that was it.Hamilton bounced off of about 10 tackles sat(this aint JC Jakar)I give him some credit though no 23 was around the football all day.Wrapping up or going low is something he has to work on but the kid is a ballhawk.I was also impressed with Gamble…that was the most physical I have ever seen him play.Bobo….he has some work to do…the heat is on and his place on the staff will be in jeopardy if we finish in the bottom half of the SEC on offense this year.

Callaway, another “good ole boy” from Georgia was the fool that evaluated Marcus McNeil as “lazy.” McNeil, from Atlanta of course, killed Georgia while at Auburn, and is now an all-pro OT with the Chargers. Searles, another Georgia “Good ole boy” is apparently the second coming of Callaway. It never ends up there. Every day at UGA is “Grounddog day.” Throw in the “good ole s. ga. boy from T’ville,” Country Mike Bobo, and you end up with an offensive line like you have ,and Cam “Bam” Newton at Auburn. Please no more “georgia good ole boys” on the staff.

I don’t understand why these players are not conditioned better. It seems that every year a key player (or players) is out with some form of injury. I know that injuries will happen but it seems to happen more often to the Dawgs compared to other teams. With that said, the Dawgs must improve greatly this weekend or it will be a long day. Our D must contain Mallett and our O-line must play aggressively. I hope to see a Ealey and King combination that lives up to the hype. Go Dawgs!

Arkansas has not shown a particularly stout defense under Petrino. Might be able to establish the run to keep their defense honest. The pressure will surely be on the CBs and safeties with Mallett flinging the ball. Blitz and the crossing patterns are open. Should be very interesting.
Not looking ahead, of course, but Mississippi State, based on the Auburn game, has gotten physically tougher on D, and with the two QBs that have distinctly different games, that can stress the new defense.
That is a couple of games that could go either way depending on a couple of turnovers and field position.

Ealey was not effective on last Saturday because the OLine was not effective in blocking! Has nothing to do with King being out of the line up. The truth is that Richt likes 1 dementional football by the pass NOT the run. He has not had a true running game since he came to GA and barely discovered Moreno late. We had a running game by accident – not design.
And another thing – if this defense is “timid” then what in the heck is going on with a new DC hired at record amounts of money to produce an aggressive defense? Football coaches should be paid on the basis of the number of wins they can produce. The passion has gone out of Richt it seems to me! And to hear him tell it – he has a passionless defense.

Kind of long, but I included the most relevant info:
Phil Steele on Arkansas:
“If you go back to the offensive line, they still opened holes for 4.3 yards per carry last year. They trimmed the sack total from 46 to 23. This year, they’ve got four starters back on the offensive line. So, quite honestly, I’m not too concerned with the offensive line. In fact, I rate it the number 22 offensive line in the country.”
“Really, I do not have an offensive question mark on Arkansas. In fact, I rate ‘em either number one or number two in the country offensively this year. I think they’ll be among the most explosive offenses – them and Houston probably will come up the best statistically this year.”
On receivers:”Greg Childs – I think he’s got a chance of being the top guy. They’ve got so much speed at the receiver position – Joe Adams, Jarius Wright. If we’re talking about wide receivers, I can’t give you a breakout guy.”
“If we’re talking about the overall receiving corp, the guy who I think is really going to emerge this year is D.J. Williams. I think D.J. Williams, the tight end, is a guy that was underutilized last year.”
On Ryan Mallett: “Even though the schedule is still difficult on the road, he’s not taking on two of the top five defenses in the country on the road. I think you’re going to see his road stats improve to match his outstanding home stats. And you’ll see him be one of the top quarterbacks in the country.”
“Part of the reason is, is the receiving corp he’s throwing to. He’s got receivers with great speed. He’s got an outstanding tight end. He’s got running backs that can catch the football. He’s got a solid offensive line in front of him that kept getting better as far as the sacks allowed goes. I think Ryan Mallett’s got a great supporting cast. He’s got a cannon for an arm. He’s got the size you want in a QB, and I just think he’s going to have a phenomenal year.”
Phil Steele on Arkansas Defense:
“When I looked at Arkansas heading into last year, I said, in Petrino’s first year, they lost their top seven tacklers from the previous year, so I expected them to be weak. They gave up 31 points per game, and they gave up 375 yards per game. That’s right about where I projected them.”
“Last year, they had nine returning starters on defense, and I thought they’d be a much-improved defense. You look at the points per game – the points per game was better. They went from 31 points per game down to 25 points per game, almost a touchdown less allowed per game. But a lot of that was due to the plus-15 [turnover margin] that they had, so they did catch a few breaks from here to there.”
“Probably the most alarming number to me was that the yards per game actually went up. I was very surprised that last year they allowed 401 yards per game as opposed to 375 the previous year.”
“You look at this year’s squad – they only [lost] five lettermen. They have seven starters returning. On paper, you’d have to say this should be a much-improved defense. Factor in the fact that last year’s defense underperformed a little bit.”
“So not an overwhelming defense but to have a top 30 to top 35 defense would be enough for this team.”

Ealey was fine if he hadn’t fumbled. Mike BoZo is the one at fault for conservative play calling. Bozo gotta go.
Ealey is better than King at running, but I wonder why Carlton Thomas didn’t get a bigger shot – he’s got nice speed and vision, and now, fumbling can’t be too big of a concern compared to his peers…
