ATHENS — Todd Grantham took note of Saturday’s barb from Steve Spurrier –- and returned the volley Tuesday night with a reference to Spurrier’s lack of success in the NFL.
Spurrier, the South Carolina coach, poked at Grantham, the Georgia defensive coordinator and long-time NFL assistant, after Gamecocks running back Marcus Lattimore had 182 yards rushing against the Bulldogs by saying: “That little inside zone play, the NFL doesn’t run that play. That’s a new scheme, I guess.”
Grantham was asked after Georgia’s practice Tuesday if he saw Spurrier’s comment.
“Yeah, that was texted to me,” Grantham replied with a grin. “I appreciate his assistance, you know. But we actually knew what plays they were running. And they actually run that play in pro ball, and our offense actually runs that play, too. So we’re kind of on top of our game.
“It was kind of an out-of-left-field comment,” Grantham added. “I kind of took it more as a shot at the NFL. I really wasn’t sure if it was because of his lack of success there or what. So I kind of took it more like that than anything.”
Spurrier was 12-20 in two seasons as coach of the NFL’s Washington Redskins.
Grantham coached in the NFL for 11 seasons before being hired as Georgia’s defensive coordinator this year.
South Carolina beat Georgia 17-6 on Saturday.

Spurrier also won the ACC title at Duke,
Whoa…..So he has had two successes in how many years?
And yes I do remember it, QB was Ben Bennett.

cctusc: No. It isn’t his record. Its his personality. He’s a sad sort of guy whose only joy comes from coaching a team to beat Georgia they way he never could himself. He won a Heisman but never won a single game with Georgia. It seems that, even with all the wins when he coached at Florida, those losses as a quarterback are still stuck in his craw and he just can’t help making jabs at the team responsible for his torment.

That’s right hold on to 1980, keep thinking that Hershel is still there.
I like to live in the present, and that would mean a SC win over GA

A defensive coord who just gave up 190 yds rushing in gm 1 should just say ” they were the better team and congratulations”…..I dont like to hear our coaches who just got their butts handed to them talking any smack…TG needs to hang out w Coach Richt more often and talk less…sorry guys Brad

TAKE YOUR SHOT SPURRIER, BUT BE CAREFUL, THERE’S A LOT OF FOOTBALL TO BE PLAYED BEFORE THIS SEASON OVER. OF GEORGIA’S DEFENSIVE TACKLING, WHY CAN’T THEY BE TAUGHT TO HIT AND GRAB AND HOLD ON. THIS ARM OR TRYING TO KNOCK THE BACK DOWN WITH A SHOULDER TACKLING WANT GET IT…YOU’VE GOT TO HIT GRAB AND HOLD. THIS IS A BASIC FUNDAMENTAL TAUGHT AT THE GRADE SCHOOL LEVEL. BOISE ST. KNOWS HOW TO TACKLE A RUNNING BACK.

Most fans dont want to give credit or admit that Lattimore broke several tackles and made GA miss tackles.
That what great running backs do, and he’s a great one.
It wasnt as much as Ga couldnt tackle as much as it was Lattimore making GA look bad

Really, fellas? You really think Toad told Spurrier off? Let me clue you…..Toad claims they knew the plays that were being called…BUT THEY STILL COULDNT STOP LATTIMORE. Further, Spurrier admits he wasn’t a good NFL coach. So when is Toad going to admit HE GOT SMOKED by South Carolina’s running game. Yeah, you boys keep talking. Deny it all you want, but the fact remains, South Carolina kicked your a$$es and it only gets worse for Jawjuh the rest of the year.

GT Fan – you have your own problems. Your defense had gotten worst over the years.
06 – 19.7 a game
07 – 22.5 a game.
08 – 22.0 a game – slight improvement
09 – 26.7 a game –
Last six games, Tech gave up 30,34,24,10 and 28. Take the 10 out from Savannah state and you are giving up 29 a game.
I’d worry about your own house…

Ok, let me splain it to ya.
Georgia’s defense in sec better than sc’s in:
sacks, int’s, tackles for loss, pass defense and total defense.
Looks like the only category that the SC defense is better than the UGA defense in the SEC is in the completely trivial one called “points conceded”
Points conceded in SEC games – UGA 17 SC 6

This is to funny I have never seen the dog fans hold on to so little after a loss to make themselves feel better. Come on now I know he’s your coach but a freshman RB made his Defense look like a highschool Defense. I know he had to say something but to say we knew what that play was they run it in the NFL just admitted you knew and still couldn’t do anything. He will be back as a life time assistant in the NFL next year.
