Grantham returns Spurrier’s barb

ATHENS — Todd Grantham took note of Saturday’s barb from Steve Spurrier –- and returned the volley Tuesday night with a reference to Spurrier’s lack of success in the NFL.

Spurrier, the South Carolina coach, poked at Grantham, the Georgia defensive coordinator and long-time NFL assistant, after Gamecocks running back Marcus Lattimore had 182 yards rushing against the Bulldogs by saying: “That little inside zone play, the NFL doesn’t run that play. That’s a new scheme, I guess.”

Grantham was asked after Georgia’s practice Tuesday if he saw Spurrier’s comment.

“Yeah, that was texted to me,” Grantham replied with a grin. “I appreciate his assistance, you know. But we actually knew what plays they were running. And they actually run that play in pro ball, and our offense actually runs that play, too. So we’re kind of on top of our game.

“It was kind of an out-of-left-field comment,” Grantham added. “I kind of took it more as a shot at the NFL. I really wasn’t sure if it was because of his lack of success there or what. So I kind of took it more like that than anything.”

Spurrier was 12-20 in two seasons as coach of the NFL’s Washington Redskins.

Grantham coached in the NFL for 11 seasons before being hired as Georgia’s defensive coordinator this year.

South Carolina beat Georgia 17-6 on Saturday.

Dan Mullen-
Grantham saying that they were on top of their game is like Custer saying ” We had them right where we wanted them”

Mike T. Did Tennessee beat Georgia last year? I can remember that game being a blowout but who won?

Mike T- I’d be more concerned about the offense that Coach Grantham is going up against Sat, not what SC is going to do.

I’am, however I just thought I throw out that out there
since your someone who don’t when to shutup and move on,
and want’s to keep gloating.

Well, geez, Todd, if you knew what play they were going to run, why couldn’t you stop it? They ran the zone read to Lattimore seven straight times on their last drive in the fourth quarter. I knew it was coming. You knew it was coming. Everyone in the stadium knew it was coming. No one stopped it.

Talk trash when you win.

Every team around has a game like Georgia’s last week.
Florida once got killed by Nebraska.
Alabama got ran over by UTAH
Mississippi State about every game they play
SC the second half of every season.

It is very obvious that all the people on this blog come from a bunch of looser schools. They have nothing to brag about on their own blog. Besides, they way you all spout off at the mouth only proves that you are a bunch of TN, SC, FL inbreds. I live in the state of Alabama which has the most monoric inbreds in the world but you people are right up there with them. And FL fans, although you have beaten us 17 of the last 20 the DAWGS still has the lead in the overall series. All of you go back to your mothers er sisters you simpleton retards.

Tucker – Don’t be so harsh on Grantham. Frankly, UGA and USC are close enough in talent that all along we expected USC to be capable of some big plays against the Dawgs. In fact, that didn’t so much happen. Maybe Grantham can reinforce tackling more with the defense, which Lattimore physically abused, but Grantham did have guys in place schematically to contest Lattimore, so his scheme wasn’t garbage. Rather, Mike BoZo, that offensive coordinator guy, limited a talented freshman QB that played well, and is the biggest reason UGA scored 6 points. Bozo = worst performer. Ealey = worst mistake. Grantham = not perfect, but good enough that UGA could have won if the offense played average football.

I believe UGA will be better this Saturday and hope they smash Prick Petrino’s team, but let’s keep the heat on Richt and Bozo, not Grantham as far as coaching goes.

When you have the best freshamn RB in the country, I agree, why throw the ball( especially since I’ll agree with GA fans here about Garcia not being very good )

But we dont have to have a great QB when we have Lattimore ( and we have several more good RB behind him )

By responding to Spurrier,

Oh my word, he responded to the evil genius.
Spurrier isn’t a good coach,he is 2-5 against Richt,(not counting the losses he had while Richt was at FSU)
he’s lost every where he’s been expect Florida, and the only
reason he won there is because the talent was so good, even
Zook could win there.
