Gamecocks ‘really controlled line of scrimmage’, Spurrier says; changes ahead for Dogs?

Georgia needs to play more — and bigger — people on the defensive line. And it needs to get better play from a couple of positions on the offensive line “or make some changes there.”

Those were Mark Richt’s answers Sunday when asked about an observation from South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier that the Gamecocks “really controlled the line of scrimmage” against the Dogs on Saturday.

“I don’t know if it was total domination. It was actually a pretty close game to the very end,” Richt said on a conference call. “But I think we’ve got to learn our personnel a little bit better.”

On the defensive line, he said, “we’ve probably got to get our bigger men in there, ‘Bean’ [Justin Anderson] and [Kwame] Geathers. We’ve got to find a way to get them in the game more, got to find the right combination in some of our looks. That’ll help us.”

Neither Anderson nor Geathers played against South Carolina, according to Georgia’s participation chart. Richt said the Dogs also need to get Abry Jones more playing time on the D-line.

South Carolina freshman running back Marcus Lattimore, who had 182 yards rushing on 37 carries, said afterward that the Gamecocks “knew coming into the game … we could gash them up the middle.” He said South Carolina center T.J. Johnson “did a great job of moving their nose guard,” DeAngelo Tyson.

The 6-4, 290-pound Tyson has started the Bulldogs’ first two games at nose but also can play end (and prefers it) if the 6-5, 326-pound Anderson and the 6-6, 325-pound Geathers get playing time at nose.

On the offensive line, Richt said the tackles (Clint Boling and Josh Davis) and the center (Ben Jones) “played pretty good” Saturday. “Our guards struggled more than anybody on offense,” Richt said. “We’ve got to either get better or make some changes there.”

Cordy Glenn and Chris Davis are the starting guards.

Razorback,
Petrino is no Spurrier. Also, your “D” is nowhere near what they have in Columbia. I’d be careful if I was you. You haven’t played anyone yet!

No it was not a blow out but we did not score a touchdown. You hold a team to 17 in their house you should win the game. Bobo is a complete joke as an OC but CMR does not have the stones to do anything about it. This is not a one game assessment on my part. Bobo has been horrible ever since he took over. Yes, he will have an occasional good game plan but not a consistent one. What is our “identity” on offense? Don’t have one do we? Supposed to be a pro style offense but you have to be able to run the ball in that offense to set up the pass. Our offensive line got ABUSED Saturday and that was supposed to be the strength of our team. Also, our strength and conditioning coach needs to go because I have noticed that our players accross the board in the SEC are smaller and less physical. SC had some mammoth offensive linemen and the pushed us around all day. The defense played hard and kept us in the game but did you know that Lattimore broke 28 tackles and had 121 yards rushing after contact. That cannot happen. Yes, he appears to be a stud but unless he is the next Herschel or Bo a true freshman should not run rampant on you like that.

Last year, it was the defensive coordinator; once that was changed, you guys were going to be GREAT….

This year, it’s the offensive coordinator; change that and you guys will be GREAT!

I have never understood how coordinators are supposed to be the ultimate deciding factor about the quality of the football team. I think you folks place too much importance on them. They are too easy to scapegoat……

I’ve been fed up with greedy/me only pro players and am now fed up with these college punks. This is what coach Dooley (UT) said of young punks of today:

Dooley said his players’ response to second half adversity was a microcosm of young people’s mentalities these days.

“I think it’s a little bit of a sociological issue,” he said. “I think that more than ever before, we are in such a results-oriented world that children are groomed from the beginning about winning and losing, and not competing. And I think it’s something that they all want success, and they want all this personal gratification, and they lose site of what it takes to get that.

“And I think you don’t just see it in sports. The sociologists have called this the entitlement generation. If you ask employers out there across the board, there’s a consensus across the board that this generation comes in expecting raises and expecting bonuses and wanting vacation more than any other generation of the past. And so I think their focus is on the wrong thing. It’s on kind of the show, it’s on they want everything easy. It’s not their fault. I think it’s a generational thing

“It’s important that we teach them the importance of process, and that you get your satisfaction from the investment you put into something.”

I’m sick of all the apologists — what the hell do you expect with an inept offense and an arm-tackling defense? Een if Lattimore may the next Herschel, that’s no excuse for what I saw Saturday. So you think Mr. Grantham’s the answer? And finally, A.J wouldn’t have saved the day.

Razorback,
Agreed that Richt is no Spurrier, but remember that UGA looked pretty awesome against an inferior opponent (La. Lafayette), just like your team has. It’s a whole other ballgame when you get into SEC play. Just a word of caution to you. You may have to eat those words. I wouldn’t expect UGA to just “lay down” this Saturday. I suspect they’ll be pretty fired up and ready to play after a tough road loss.

Well said URBAN ………….. but you also got to realize that as fans we also expect instant gratification and were not behind the lines on saturday so i’d ask some ppl not be so harsh on Richt because we’re not there and definitely not in his shoes. Im sure he knows that Bobo is a sorry O.C. but i also have heard that Vince Dooley had something to do possibly with them giving Bobo second and third chances. If this is true then i’d tell Dooley to stay out of the politics of the football program and let Richt get rid of Bobo and not keep him at the expense of the players, fans and the university.

The offensive line is my biggest issue. These guys were supposed to be one of the top groups in the nation. Their first two games have shown them to be overrated. They have not done the job up front to open holes for the running game. The same thing happened at the start of last season.

You can only blame so much on the RB. UGA has the talent there. Now its up to the O-line to make it happen. The Defense will have some growing pains in a new system. Still, they kept South Carolina off the scoreboard. UGA was in that ballgame all the way down to the end. Its no excuse for the O-line not to run block better than what they are doing.

It was only the 2nd game of the season, i think that the coaching staff will make the necessary adjustments and hopefully i pray to let Coach Richt start calling the plays again. If he doesnt then we will probably not score much against Arkansas and our defense will get worn down again. I would say that our 3 down linemen and CB’s had very poor performances last week and were outta shape upfront and the CB’s were too scared to tackle. Back to the fundamentals boys, lots of laps and hopefully youre all ashamed of how you got dominated. SC will lose to Alabama and Florida and possibly Tennessee so Georgia still has a chance to win it.
Todd Grantham i betcha will take out Rambo and dont you know hes all over the Defensive backs for their lack of enthusiasm and tackling skills and i hope we’ll see a different defense this saturday. Theres no miracles with the defense cause it takes awhile to adjust but we have a god awful offense and if i had any pull with Georgia……Bobo would be out and coaching the QB’s and that would take effect immediately. Todd you get a pass this year but Bobo should have never ever been a OC. He knows that, we know and the A.D. knows that so hopefully we’ll get some news about this before the week is up. But i’d say to get a very O.C. and not make it public if thats possible cause Georgia has the money.

I see we’re still in knee jerk mode, combined with a whole bunch of posers, lurkers and dawg haters.

I watched the game again and it was clear to me that Georgia’s DB’s did a very good job of containing Garcia and SC’s passing attack. Our players were in the right scheme for most of the game. Our problem was along the DL. The good news is Richt knows and Grantham will address it.

Our real problems are along the OL. They simply can not run block and our backs are making some very poor reads.

The sky isn’t falling. Remember SC still has to play UF and Bama. We aren’t out of this thing yet!!! Let’s keep cool and see what happens.

Bobo’s offense has to score 21 a game, minimum. Grantham is doing his job, holding offenses to under 18 a game. Just need for the offense to find a way to score when get in the red zone. Georgia moved the ball good enough to get inside the 10 yard line on 3 different drives. You can’t get inside the 10, on 3 drivs, and come away with 6 points. Should have been 21 points there and a win.

As for those Arkansas fans bashing Georgia, watch what you say you are 2-0 but playing Tennessee Tech, Louisiana Monroe doesnt guarantee you the SEC title game. Youre coming into Georgia this weekend thinking that you have a high powered offense and defense and were coming off an emotional game where the defense will be fired up to show the fans their no flukes, lot more intensity there with alot to prove. Tech fans i would be in hiding after the loss to Kansas and Kansas lost to N Dakota State 6-3 so make sure youre bashing the right team. You might should stay in Ga. Tech room scatratching your head and focusing on your own problems because believe me you have alot of them. Teams have already figured out your running game and since you have no passing game im afraid it will be a long year for you guys. So curl that finger backtoward yourself before you come in here pointing at others.

Georgia abandons the run too quick. Should have pounded them with 35 carries for Ealey. Ealey would get 125 a game. Smith should get 25 rushing, King 50, Murray 40, Chapas 20, should be at 260 a game on the ground–just too much talent.

Durham’s a 100 yard a game receiver. Can get 50 from TE’s, and 50 from Brown and Gray. 200 passing, right there.

SC is in the East driver’s seat more than we realize, maybe. They do play Alabama during the season and although winning that game would be their greatest win ever ………….ever ………it would not really be that important. Why?

If SC only loses to Alabama and they run the SEC table, even with a loss to Clemson, they will AGAIN face Bama but in the Dome. They could possibly win that game and end up like top 3- 7 in the nation. If they do this and lose to Bama twice ……………..still be top 10, easily too.

Now that Lattimore kid is the real deal. He will be soon getting tons of Heisman talk. By late October, if he continues to get 150-200 yds per game and they continue to win …………he will win it. He IS THE difference in SC being only average to great …………very much like UGA was in 80. hec an falt out catch that dump pass from their QWB and scat. SC did not do that vs UGA that i recall. Did not have to. Our fat slobs could not stop him up our middle. Disgraceful.

SC and Alabama for all the marbles come season end in the Dome.

My ala mater …….UGA ? We will be facing Dolly Madison in the Richmond Spider BIte Bowl.

We have no one but Aaron Murray who cares about winning. ealey and AJ need to call Greyhound and let them do the driving OUT OF TOWN. Richt and bobo need to be on there with them.

Go Dogs.

We did good in pass defense but ofcourse they didnt need to pass because the running game was good. I think Grantham defense will adjust to the run better but we gotta see more enthusiasm on both sides of the ball. Enthusiasm is contagious and it really pumps up the team. Before the season began alot of players on defense claimed on how good they were and were excited about the new D.C. so lets see how they will respond after the shallacking of a good football team. We’ll get better as the season goes folks so be down i just think this was the wake up call Georgia needed and thank God it happen sooner than later.

Hard for me to believe that 30 more pounds at nose is going to make any difference, especially if the player isn’t as strong. Pick up a 30 pound dumbell and see if you think placing one of those in someones back pocket would make them better able to stop the run. Makes no sense. We may have the back 8 players for this defense, but the front 3 just aren’t all that good. If we still had the three DL we lost to the NFL last year in this scheme it would be a great defense. But we don’t so it’s going to be difficult and will take several years to get the personnel needed to fit the scheme.

One play I thought was big in the game was a result of poor coaching from my view. First series of the game Murray rolled out threw a little behind to Orson who dropped a touchdown. When he rolled out he could have ran 15 yards EASY maybe all the way in. But that coaching he got during the first game not to run the ball and to make sure we get SOME points, COST us points and the lead and the momentum and all that stuff. Most games come down to a few plays and that one and Ealey’s fumble were the two I thought that cost us that game.
