Gamecocks ‘really controlled line of scrimmage’, Spurrier says; changes ahead for Dogs?

Georgia needs to play more — and bigger — people on the defensive line. And it needs to get better play from a couple of positions on the offensive line “or make some changes there.”

Those were Mark Richt’s answers Sunday when asked about an observation from South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier that the Gamecocks “really controlled the line of scrimmage” against the Dogs on Saturday.

“I don’t know if it was total domination. It was actually a pretty close game to the very end,” Richt said on a conference call. “But I think we’ve got to learn our personnel a little bit better.”

On the defensive line, he said, “we’ve probably got to get our bigger men in there, ‘Bean’ [Justin Anderson] and [Kwame] Geathers. We’ve got to find a way to get them in the game more, got to find the right combination in some of our looks. That’ll help us.”

Neither Anderson nor Geathers played against South Carolina, according to Georgia’s participation chart. Richt said the Dogs also need to get Abry Jones more playing time on the D-line.

South Carolina freshman running back Marcus Lattimore, who had 182 yards rushing on 37 carries, said afterward that the Gamecocks “knew coming into the game … we could gash them up the middle.” He said South Carolina center T.J. Johnson “did a great job of moving their nose guard,” DeAngelo Tyson.

The 6-4, 290-pound Tyson has started the Bulldogs’ first two games at nose but also can play end (and prefers it) if the 6-5, 326-pound Anderson and the 6-6, 325-pound Geathers get playing time at nose.

On the offensive line, Richt said the tackles (Clint Boling and Josh Davis) and the center (Ben Jones) “played pretty good” Saturday. “Our guards struggled more than anybody on offense,” Richt said. “We’ve got to either get better or make some changes there.”

Cordy Glenn and Chris Davis are the starting guards.

“Murray “handled things pretty well in Games 1 and 2,” Richt said Sunday, so it’s time to “open it up more” in Game 3.”

Um, what would have been wrong with “opening it up more” in the second half last Saturday?

Yes, I remember, in 07′, the same cynical comments on the blogs after the loss to South Carolina in game 2. Bloggers declared the season over. Said Georgia was pathetic. Not so fast. 2007 turned out pretty well, the team did finish well.

Richt moves Bean Anderson and then says the Offensive guards didn’t play well! Sheesh. Did you guys see No. 73 for Carolina! Roke Watkins 6-5 320lb. offensive guard from Fairburn GEORGIA. Totally dominant. What is Searles doing? I think he Richt and Bobo have a problem with a certain type of kid on the offensive line. Anyway, James Carpenter from Augusta, and Chance Warmack from Atlanta Westlake ( the same School As CAMERON NEWTON), looked good at OT and OG for the tide. Jujuan James from N.Gwinnett started for Tenneesee at Rught tackle and will be an all american before he’s through. And A. J. Hawkins from MLK started at center for Ole Miss. He’s already better than your boy Ben Jones. It’s got to be tough being a Dog. Roll Tide!

Murray can be a great QB, but currently he only as good as Mike Bobo’s pathetic excuse of an offense will let him be.

And one more thing . ….. I’m gonna barf the next time someone from ESPN or Tony Barnhart brags on UGA’s offensive line being “one of the best in the country.” I think it’s high time sombody noted that, experience does not necessarily = greatness.

IF, Bobo had opened up the game plan for the freshman, in his first SEC game, on the road, in front of a loud crowd, and he had a bad day passing or worst, thrown several interceptions, you’d be calling for his head anyway. Not only that, you could ruin a talented kid.

Enough of the crying. We played a good game but not as good at SC. The game was left to the coaches and the best one won. Spurrier is one hell of a coach. He has been doing this all his life. UGA looked really good defensively except for RAMBO get him off the damn team. He would not dress out if left up to me. The announcers were even commiting on his slack ass. He use to be a stud and a head hunter. Guess that concussion rattled him some last year. BOBO we were calling your plays in the living room on saturday do you think SC didnt know what you were going to run? If you dont score how do you expect to win people? Why did we stop running Washum Ealey. I thought he looked good at times. The other running back is a joke.CMR has got to take control of the offense and use Murray, let him roll out and run or pass. The kid is a big play maker just let him do what he is good at doing. Teach him how to slide dont restrict him. CMR get your headset on and run the damn offense. Where were the Tight ends and full backs. Best in country and we dont use them? WHY????????????????????????

For anyone that thought this team was a 12-0 or a 11-1 team is either delusional, stupid or does not understand the game very well. We have a new DC installing a new scheme (I think it took Saban a year to get it right at Bama) and a new young QB. Can anyone name the last Freshman QB in the SEC to win a championship? I said this last year when everyone was clamoring to get rid of CWM. Live with the consequences. If we get rid of CMB now then you are talking about another two to three years of having 9-3 and 8-4 seasons.

As far as being predictable on offense, I can tell you 90% of the time in the game Saturday what SC was going to run before the play. I watched Bama and Penn state play and could tell you what they were going to run before the play. The offence we run is fine. It is a pro set offence and gets us some of the best QB’s in the country.

We lost Saturday because of the following reasons:

1: We sent three DL’s to the NFL and the ones playing this year are inexperienced and are not built for this system. They will get better but it will take some time.

2: Field position: We have a new QB, in his first SEC game on the road, without the best receiver in the SEC and had poor field position. Murray played well and feels good about his ability today. This is good for our future. Could he have done more? Maybe. Could he have thrown a couple of interception and be gun shy now if they would have “turned him loose” probably.

I see some very good things with this team in the future. It is time to step up and be a true DAW fan and support the team and yes the coaches. If you can not do that then it is time for you to find another team.

IT’S TIME TO SMELL THE ROSES. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH BOBO OR OTHERS. IT’S A PROBLEM WITH RICHT. IT’S GOING TO BE A VERY LONG YEAR, WE’VE DROPPED TO THE LOWER PART OF SEC WITH TOP TALENT. THERE IS JUST NO COACHING GOING ON FROM THE TOP.

UGAgrad71

September 13th, 2010
10:07 am

As much as Mike Bobo bleeds “red and black”, it is time for him to step aside as OC, and MR should call the plays. I just don’t think Mike Bobo is creative enough to hold the position of OC. Otherwise, UGA will be a second tier team in the SEC east. Too much talent and it is being wasted.

Lake Hartwell Dawg

September 13th, 2010
10:08 am

Great idea, let’s git rid of MR and get the best coach available. The two with the best winning percentage, Meyer & Saban, aren’t available, so let’s go for the third best. Oh, yeah, that’s Richt. Well then, let’s get someone whose won a national championship. Les Miles will probably be looking for a job soon. What a bunch of idiots you are. You would have fired Dooley (and Russell) in 1969 or 1970, right before the great team of 1971. Or, you would have fired Dooley in 1979 and we would never have won the national championship in ‘80. Leave Richt alone and he will get it done. “Way too much talent” at UGa? Git a grip. There’s not a true 3-4 nose guard on the roster, and none of the D tackles are SEC championship guality.
