Gamecocks ‘really controlled line of scrimmage’, Spurrier says; changes ahead for Dogs?

Georgia needs to play more — and bigger — people on the defensive line. And it needs to get better play from a couple of positions on the offensive line “or make some changes there.”

Those were Mark Richt’s answers Sunday when asked about an observation from South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier that the Gamecocks “really controlled the line of scrimmage” against the Dogs on Saturday.

“I don’t know if it was total domination. It was actually a pretty close game to the very end,” Richt said on a conference call. “But I think we’ve got to learn our personnel a little bit better.”

On the defensive line, he said, “we’ve probably got to get our bigger men in there, ‘Bean’ [Justin Anderson] and [Kwame] Geathers. We’ve got to find a way to get them in the game more, got to find the right combination in some of our looks. That’ll help us.”

Neither Anderson nor Geathers played against South Carolina, according to Georgia’s participation chart. Richt said the Dogs also need to get Abry Jones more playing time on the D-line.

South Carolina freshman running back Marcus Lattimore, who had 182 yards rushing on 37 carries, said afterward that the Gamecocks “knew coming into the game … we could gash them up the middle.” He said South Carolina center T.J. Johnson “did a great job of moving their nose guard,” DeAngelo Tyson.

The 6-4, 290-pound Tyson has started the Bulldogs’ first two games at nose but also can play end (and prefers it) if the 6-5, 326-pound Anderson and the 6-6, 325-pound Geathers get playing time at nose.

On the offensive line, Richt said the tackles (Clint Boling and Josh Davis) and the center (Ben Jones) “played pretty good” Saturday. “Our guards struggled more than anybody on offense,” Richt said. “We’ve got to either get better or make some changes there.”

Cordy Glenn and Chris Davis are the starting guards.

First, thank the Lord Tech lost to a Nancy pants team. That will keep most of them tied up with computer games and such today. Second, If McGarity is going to keep Richt, next year when all the expansion talk and conference talk comes up, Maybe we can move to the ACC and become a beast over there….LOL

Here is what needs to get better:
1) Play calling- please tell me why when you are passing almost at will on them, you suddenly decided you have to run the Wild Dawg- and get offside penalties and stopped for no gain…twice? :You should stay with something that works until they can stop it. Need an example Bobo? See Carolina’s running against us. They ran it and ran it and ran it, we could not stop it, and the won the game. Bobo needs to improve IMO..or he needs to go.
2) our offense line is suppose to be the strength of this team. Appears that is not the case. They were man handled.
3) tackling- they should have the defense carry tackling dummies to class.

bjohndawg, you are correct. Back when Erict Rhett was a running back for UF, I saw spurrier run the EXACT same play 8 our of 9 plays against UGA and Goff never did adjust. A good coach runs what works and a bad one never figures it out. Remember Dawgs, Spurrier had the guts to take the play calling away from his own son and Richt just cant do it to Bobo and it took him too long to fire willie. You really think that Bobo is the problem?

That being said, I hope Richt stays forever.

I’ve been defending Richt… even to my WIFE !!…( S.C. is really good ).. now it’s time to man-up and take over play calling.. we could still win out ( I’m an optimist )… Fla’ s rebuilding.. Ark.. will take some scoring plus good D… so if you can still Coach “em up Richt……

It will take a couple of more years of recruiting to get the right personnel to run Grantham’s 3-4 D. This year is a rebuilding year but the dogs should win 9-10 games.

Folks are right about Chris Peterson…… The SEC would not be kind to him…..He loads up on California talent and beats up on pretty weak teams. He almost couldn’t be a VT team that lost to Ms. Madison . I hate to say it, but Kirby Smart needs to come home…You ask what has he proved ? What had Mark “proved” when he got here ?…. After 6-8 years with Saban, He gets it. Kirby would have to lay out the bucks and bring in a top notch OC. It’s a business, it’s about results, and getting ” bitch slapped” by frigging Carolina has most Dawgs stomachs in a flux. Saturday was more than a loss Saturday. It was a Statement of where this program is after two years in decline. Saban won a National Title in year 3. We can’t beat Carolina Starting on three years of falling. Out of the top 25 week 2. Nuff said.

Alabama. Florida Arkansas, South Carolina, LSU, and Auburn are all
ranked in the top 16 in the country. They are 1,10,12,13,15,and 16 respectfully.

Hey Gainesville Dawg…good comments, i couldn’t agree more, i think the true dawg fans will continue to support this coaching staff…We made off season improvements and we will get better, however, with that being said, i am losing patient with Coach Bobo, although you can’t blame fumbles and dropped balls, or the O-line not run blocking as they should…I do however think he shows very little imagination on offense and with the talent we have. receivers, tight ends, we should be doing more…Our Rb’s are good but none in the class of the SC back, thats why eveyone in the nation wanted him… I think we have a good one in Murray, its time to let him do what he can do and we are going to have to live with the RS Freshman mistakes…I think a true dawg fan will see how the season plays out and if our offensive struggles continue i think Coach Richt will do what he needs to do…Remember, everyone, its just one game right now, lets focus on getting the job done against Ark..Go dawgs..

If Ealey doesn’t fumble then the game gets really close. SC was shut down in the second half. Plus Murray was handcuffed and still turned fine numbers. He has a bit of the Tarkenton in him perhaps. He’s smart and mobile with a good arm. The game was a lot closer than is being admitted in this space. Low on penalties. SC can beat Florida this year, but so can UGA with or without Green. It is encouraging to see Murray throwing so well without Green in the game and being double-covered.

In 07′, Georgia lost to SC in game 2, finished #2 in final polls. This team reminds me a lot of the 07′ team, gonna be a great year.

Thought SC would put up 50 points on our Fresh QB and brand new defense, but they didn’t even throw a single passing td.

If georgia doesn’t fumble on the 3 yard line, Georgia wins the game.

Bobo is on the hot seat…freshman or not he will be let go if we finish with less than 10 wins.We need better play calling and some fresh ideas.I was never in love with CMR’s play calling either to be honest.I am a bit shocked Kwame and Bean got no playing time at all in that game.Rodney Garner and Stacy Searles better get it together this year or 1 or both could be outta here too. Before Richt gets fired some other heads are going roll.RG is our Recruiting Coordinator and frankly we have been slipping for the past 2-3 years instate. If we lose out on a bunch of the top instate talent again this year look for him to move on.Bobo don’t have as long a leash as most seem to think…10 wins or else is what I’m hearing.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

I don’t think we are going to find out that South Carolina is a great football team. Lattimore is a good back, but they are not going to go to the SEC championship with Garcia at QB. The best you can say about him was he did not lose the game (though he did fumble), and in the past he has thrown bad interceptions. But Garcia missed half a dozen open receivers in the game. Shaw will probably be the best answer at QB long term but you aren’t going to win SEC with a freshman either. So Garcia remains the QB and Florida goes to another championship game. Congrats to USC for the win but Richt & Cos. inability to make the most of their talent is why this game is usually close and why sometimes we wind up on the losing end. Although Richt brought the program back his first 5 years, the last five have languished in mediocrity. His support among fans is dwindling as bad losses and his inability to control the players and the program becomes more apparent. If their is a problem with talent it is that our recruiting is off the mark. Caleb King and Logan Gray, both touted as big-time recruits, obviously did not havethe ability to complete at their positions in the SEC, so who recruited them and recommended we sign them. There are 8 or 10 other former “recruiting victories” that are serving out anonymous careers at UGA (Brandon Wood, Israel Troupe) If Georgia had signed Nick Saban3 years ago does anyone doubt UGA would be fielding a much stronger team today.

What a bunch of cry babies. One loss and it’s all over. The were too conservative with Murray. Whine about the defense but they gave us a chance to win. They came out flat but did improve in the second half. If this was CVM’s defense we lose 40-6. Dawgs head some chances in the red zone but were hurt by Charles’ drop and Ealey’s fumble and Bobo’s weak play calling. Bobo calls games like he is scared.

T.O.P-

At the 18 minute mark of the game USC had the ball 12 minutes, UGA 6. Uga forced a punt and on the first play of the drive they chucked the ball deep down field. Two plays later and less than 2 minutes of game clock having gone off, USC had the ball back.

It doesn’t seem like a big deal at the time, but at the end of the game when it turned into a field possesion game and the D needing a stop, offensive series like this are important. The D was gas by the USC running game.

O well, just one game and plenty more ball to be played. Just wanted to add my two cents!

With the depth at Bama and talent at Florida, UGA is dreaming of a SEC east or a SEC championship. They have one of the best atheltic facilities in college football, but they must decide were they want to go, or sit down, shut up and accept there irrelevance.

There was a handful of people that knew at least three years in advance that something was wrong with our defense and that Willie needed to go. There was also a great number of people that accused the former of being irrational or just plain stupid. You see what happened in the end but it took way too long. Looking back, in my opinion, we had an AD that had his mind on something other than UGA athletics and didn’t hold CMR accountable as to what was happening with the football program. That, my friend has now changed. Don’t think for one minute that McGarity isn’t tuned in to what’s going on. Neither is he afraid to make necessary changes. This football program gets far too much talent and these coaches get paid far too much money to be underachieving year after year. Stay tuned and lets see what happens.

Hey hatfieldgeoff…for your info Caleb King was one of the highest ranked RB’s coming out of high school, pretty much all the major programs wanted him…However, he has been injured on and off alot since his senior year in high school and you are correct he has not performed as we thought…as far as Troupe and Wood, they also were highly recruited, especially Troupe…Gray was a highly recruited QB out of high school by many schools…My point to you is that recruiting is a hit and miss sometimes…The number of stars a player has means nothing, really, when they move into Div 1 Football..I don’t think our recruiting is off the mark, yes we miss some, so do all the teams….Its what you do with them when they get here…Is that Coaching? yes…Is that the attitude and the work ethic of the player? yes…I will agree that on the offensive side of the ball it does not seem we are getting the most out of the talent we think we have….Hopefully, that will be corrected soon…At the end of the season, if our offense continues to struggle i think we will see some changes there…

You’d think it was a blowout by some of the comments from Supprrier. Youd’ think they could have scored a passing td on Georgia since they ‘dominated’. You’d think an experienced QB like Garcia could have passed for more yards than a Freshman like Murray. You’d think the score wouldn’t have been 14-6 with 2 minutes to go if SC had dominated the game. Something doesn’t add up, I think it’s Spurrier’s recollection of the game.

Rambo needs to hit the bench, he was loafing and even got called out by the TV announcers… WTF is up with our o line and mike bobo, sorry, but maybe we need some changes there too. we have never had a dominate line, and his play calling was awful. 3-2 lets run it right up the gut with 11 defenders waiting….. yeah, i hate to say it but if this season tanks, and next season tanks, we will have a new coaching staff. sorry, and trust me it hurt for me to say these things but really, WTF.
