A.J.’s tweet, Spurrier’s dig, Caleb’s absence, and more

(Please click here for the game story on Georgia’s loss to South Carolina.)

COLUMBIA – The suspended A.J. Green shared his feelings about Saturday’s loss via Twitter.

“I’m sick,” he tweeted.

“But we will bounce back,” he added. “[W]hen I get back someone will have a price to pay. [T]rust me!!!!!”

In Green’s absence, seven Georgia players caught passes against South Carolina, led by Kris Durham’s three for 76 yards, including a long of 55.

“You can’t replace A.J.,” Durham said. “I tried to step up. We all tried to step up our game. But you can’t replace that. He’s one of the best players in college football.”

++++++++++

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier appreciated some postgame words from Mark Richt.

“I shook hands with the opposing coach, and he said, ‘Coach, you have a heck of a team,’” Spurrier said. “I don’t think anyone has ever told us that before [at South Carolina].”

In his postgame news conference, Spurrier took just a little dig at Georgia’s new defensive coordinator, Todd Grantham, a long-time NFL assistant.

“When you have a back like Marcus [Lattimore] and the linemen opened cracks, I’m sure that Georgia defensive coordinator [became frustrated],” Spurrier said. “That little inside zone play, the NFL doesn’t run that play. That’s a new scheme, I guess.

“I’m sure they knew we’d run it, but they certainly didn’t stop it much.”

Lattimore’s 37 carries were the most against Georgia since Auburn’s Kenny Irons had the same number for 179 yards in 2005.

++++++++++

Tailback Caleb King, who got only one carry in the second half of the season opener because of a twisted ankle, got none Saturday.

“He was hobbling most of the week in practice,” Richt said.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo conceded that King’s absence “hurt us a little bit” but said he thought Washaun Ealey “was fresh and ran hard” throughout.

Ealey, making his season debut after being suspended from the opener, had 75 yards on 19 carries. But he fumbled near the goal line in the third quarter as Georgia seemed poised to score a touchdown. South Carolina’s Stephon Gilmore recovered the fumble at the Gamecocks’ 1-yard line and returned it 13 yards to the 14.

“I saw the end zone and was focused on trying to get in there,” Ealey said. “I wasn’t focused on the ball, and that’s what cost us.”

++++++++++

Outside linebacker Justin Houston had three sacks, the most by a UGA player since Marcus Howard’s three against Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl following the 2007 season.

Houston also had a career-high 10 tackles and a forced fumble.

But the fine individual numbers were ruined by the score, he said. “We lost, so I feel like I lost.”

++++++++++

  • Fullback Shaun Chapas left the game in the first half with a sprained ankle and did not return. Richt said he wasn’t aware of any other injuries in the game.
  • Georgia’s six points were its fewest in a game against South Carolina since 1904, when the Bulldogs lost in Columbia 2-0.
  • The last time Georgia did not score a touchdown in a game? A 16-12 loss to South Carolina in Athens in 2007.
  • Saturday’s loss was Georgia’s first in Columbia under Richt after four victories.
  • The Ogletree twins, freshmen Alec and Zander, became the first brothers to play for Georgia in the same game since 1999 (Dustin and Miles Luckie). Both of the Ogletrees played on special teams.
  • Linebacker Akeem Dent wore No. 31, rather than his regular No. 51. A different UGA player is wearing No. 31 each game this season in honor of safety Quintin Banks, who was forced to forgo his senior season because of recurring knee injuries.

Ron good point

Im not on Granthams case because the defensive did make some noticable adjustments in the second half especially towards the end

Most of the defensive wo’s I blame on 2 things

1. Old habbits are hard to die i.e. not wrapping up

2. The defense was on the field to much thanks to master mind calling those wonderful offensive plays

its time that UGA be feared instead of having the opposing team love us

The defense played pretty well, except for tackling lattimore. I give him some credit, he is a load, but I saw plenty of poor tackling and he gained a ton of yardage after first contact.

I said all week tackling would be the big thing with our defense and unfortunately for us it was a problem. I thought that goal line stand at the end of the game was big. The secondary played a lot better than in recent years, but the free safety position needs some work. Rambo has already gotten sucked in on several plays and left the CB all alone with no help. Plenty to work on and build upon for next week.

CMR has yet to show anyone that he can win the big games! This will or at least should cost him in the near future. In the words of a random Facebook user: “Never has a coach accomplished so little with so much talent. Every year same old story. Richt is the biggest UNDERachiever in college football. If just being in a talented state is all their is to it, then what has happened to Florida State and Miami? Why isn’t Rutgers a top 10 program? Penn State hasn’t averaged 10 wins a year since Richt’s tenure. With the exception of USC, why isn’t UCLA, Stanford, Cal etc. averaging 9-10 a year huh? This is Richt’s first LOSS in Columbia. He is 7-3 vs SC.

I have to agree with you Scared. It doesn’t seem to me like the players care if they win or lose? The defensive tackling was terrible.

How can a 180 lb defensive back expect to stop a 200lb running back by bumping him with his shoulder and grabbing him with his arms?

Your still allowed to hit right ?

Jakar Hamilton is NOT the hit man.

Time will tell if things will improve?

Another reason why I can say it’s all about coaching. Take Boise State. Their entire offensive line are 2 star athletes plus they are undersize.

Faraji Wright(so) OT 284lbs………2star
Brenel Myers(so) OT 267lbs……..2star
Nate Potter(jr) OG 293lbs…………2star
Will Lawrence(sr) OG 293lbs…….2star
Thomas Byrd(jr) C 284lbs…………2star

Just imagine what Chris Peterson and his coaching staff could do with our 3 and 4 star recruits.

This is 2010, not 2007. SC has a tremendous team. Lattimore makes a huge difference for them. Unless Spurrier goes into another late-season senility spin-down, this could be the year the chickens play in the SECCG. More likely, they’ll spin out and lose to Alabama and Florida. That means, if the Dogs can man up and beat the Gators, they could win out. I think Carolina hit its high note against the Dogs. No doubt. Most important, Tech lost to a bad team. Georgia lost to a good team playing their best game of the year.

Coach Richt ever since you turned over the Play Calling to Bobo what have been the results? You gotta see what the fans see and maybe what the players see as well. You have no plays designed to utilize the talents of the players you have on hand? Tight end was the position we used alot, wide outs are there, we get big plays on certain calls on offense and Bobo does what? OMG wildcat and there are plenty other bad calls. Do you not think that teams like SC, Alabama, Fla, Lsu, Auburn have inexperienced DC? Its Bobo against them and they are very prepared for our offense because Bobo is 1 dimensional. Im serious now……..Coach Richt get an OC or start calling the plays yourself. We have given Bobo 5 years to get better at the expense of 5 seasons, fans, recruiting but am growing really tired of the same ol plays year end year out. If you dont make a change it may cost you your job, fan support and recruiting. Take your own money and hire you a OC itsa not like your poor or something. Oh and while your at it get you a new and better strength and conditioning coach cause those guys were pushed all over the field saturday.

I thought the problem was something more serious like this highly touted, experienced offensive line that to some are considered the “best” in the nation is really “bogus hype” and in reality “they suck” or that Grantham’s 3-4 defense was more like a Shanaya Twain song,”it don’t impressa me much”.

Look at the talent of the top teams in the SEC and compare it to what you saw on Saturday give or take one or two players. UGA is hurting desperately on the defensive line. The offensive line is no where near Bama’s and this is only Saban’s fourth year. I don’t see UGA winning the SEC East anytime soon. The SEC Championship is a dream at this point.

What happened to as College Football analysts put it “one of the top O lines in the country”? Over 100 combined starts but they couldnt block Louisana Laf.. What happened to the fixing of fundamental problems that killed UGA last year. Absolutely no discipline or coaching basics. Just look at the # of players arrested year after year. This is one program headed in the wrong direction. Richt will win 9 or 10 games a yr, but failing to win the big ones will keep Ga mediocre at best. I used to fault the media with not giving Ga the respect it is due, but after the last 10 seasons I have to agree with them. Respect is something you have to earn and UGA has yet to prove anything!

We all saw GA coming after Garcia that was the game plan to rattle him, sack him, and make him look bad. They kind of succeeded in that goal. Unfortunately they ignored reality as to what was happening on the field. Garcia didn’t get a chance to pass much at all. Spurrier adapted during this game Grantham was waiting for Spurrier to be Spurrier and he lost the game in the end. This to me was the headline Grantham ignored his own eyes.

We have no time outs left after 7 minutes in the 3rd qrt. We are playing a SEC game on the road,,,and we have to burn all our time outs halfe thru the 3rd qrt. Players and coaches not prepared.

We have 3 series in the 1st half..3 downs and punt..no urgency to gain ball control..keep the defense off the field,,

NO EMOTION…WE LOOKED AND ACTED INTIMADATED….WE COULD NOT MAN UP!..

BOBO and the entire offense needs to watch the replay of the WV vs. Marshall game…2 4th qrt. drives of 98 and 96 yards…their play calling..execution..QB showing leadership….playing on the road…was proof that you got to be able to MAN UP..when it’s time!

Richts Butt Cut……….is right. 10-11 against mediocre opponents. Let Jim Donnan call the plays, atleast he motivated the players, let Philip Fulmer call the plays atleast he knows how to bring the best out of players and utilize their talents, there are alot of coaches out there doing nothing but broadcasting and if you approached them the right way and not make this a public issue you might get a decent OC. We have a major i mean major problem with our offense coordinator. You know, we certainly know it and eventhough its early in the season theres no injustice about changing up things with Bobo. He knows that he cant call plays. Its kinda like owning a big corporation and you ask a mail clerk “hey you wanna be a vice-president” oh heck yes he would. More money who doesnt. But that decision will come back to haunt you and run your company down to the ground as what is happening at Georgia. Its a sinking ship in the ocean and you have no one who knows how to pale water but keeps waiting on someone to step up and pale water. It’s like Bobo has to open his book called “Offensive Plays even Dummies can do” and see what’s the next play he should call. I tell you theres no way Saban would let Bobo be his OC. After 1 series he’d be up in the booth pounding on the face of Bobo and kicking him off his coaching staff. He’d throw off his head set running up to the booth and throwing him off into the crowd below. He has no tolerance for mindless play calling, this mans serious about his program. This whole Bobo thing is a joke to me and others but you got to ask yourself how fast is the ship sinking and are there anyone who knows how to pale water.

A.J., the only one that will pay a price is your team and the UGA nation, which we have already paid (17-6). Your good , but not that good. I guess you would have been on (D) tackling Lattimore who is going to be worth way more than you because he looked like his mind was only on football. He didn’t look like a showboat (thug) like our whole team acts once they get talked about including Knowshone running up the sideline with his mohawk against Ala. , which started this downfall for the UGA program.

Also, the coaches are the reason we lost, not you. And from what I saw Saturday, Arron doesn’t just have to throw it up anywhere for you to catch, I think he is pretty dang accurate and more dedicated than you.

I have come to the conclusion that the talent we have on the OL is just average. They have the experience but they are just not that good. They couldn’t open holes against LL and USC exposed how week they are. We will need to pass more (They do a decent job in pass blocking) run blocking between the tackels is nothing short of awful and it has been for several years.
