(Please click here for the game story on Georgia’s loss to South Carolina.)
COLUMBIA – The suspended A.J. Green shared his feelings about Saturday’s loss via Twitter.
“I’m sick,” he tweeted.
“But we will bounce back,” he added. “[W]hen I get back someone will have a price to pay. [T]rust me!!!!!”
In Green’s absence, seven Georgia players caught passes against South Carolina, led by Kris Durham’s three for 76 yards, including a long of 55.
“You can’t replace A.J.,” Durham said. “I tried to step up. We all tried to step up our game. But you can’t replace that. He’s one of the best players in college football.”
++++++++++
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier appreciated some postgame words from Mark Richt.
“I shook hands with the opposing coach, and he said, ‘Coach, you have a heck of a team,’” Spurrier said. “I don’t think anyone has ever told us that before [at South Carolina].”
In his postgame news conference, Spurrier took just a little dig at Georgia’s new defensive coordinator, Todd Grantham, a long-time NFL assistant.
“When you have a back like Marcus [Lattimore] and the linemen opened cracks, I’m sure that Georgia defensive coordinator [became frustrated],” Spurrier said. “That little inside zone play, the NFL doesn’t run that play. That’s a new scheme, I guess.
“I’m sure they knew we’d run it, but they certainly didn’t stop it much.”
Lattimore’s 37 carries were the most against Georgia since Auburn’s Kenny Irons had the same number for 179 yards in 2005.
++++++++++
Tailback Caleb King, who got only one carry in the second half of the season opener because of a twisted ankle, got none Saturday.
“He was hobbling most of the week in practice,” Richt said.
Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo conceded that King’s absence “hurt us a little bit” but said he thought Washaun Ealey “was fresh and ran hard” throughout.
Ealey, making his season debut after being suspended from the opener, had 75 yards on 19 carries. But he fumbled near the goal line in the third quarter as Georgia seemed poised to score a touchdown. South Carolina’s Stephon Gilmore recovered the fumble at the Gamecocks’ 1-yard line and returned it 13 yards to the 14.
“I saw the end zone and was focused on trying to get in there,” Ealey said. “I wasn’t focused on the ball, and that’s what cost us.”
++++++++++
Outside linebacker Justin Houston had three sacks, the most by a UGA player since Marcus Howard’s three against Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl following the 2007 season.
Houston also had a career-high 10 tackles and a forced fumble.
But the fine individual numbers were ruined by the score, he said. “We lost, so I feel like I lost.”

We lost to a very good team. Do we need to get better? Absolutely! Both on offense and defense. This will be a good year for the dawgs. Don’t get discouraged.

well what do you expect when you have a bunch of passive o-linemen out there? they all need to step up and be men instead of playing like some pussies and letting everyone push them around.
STAND UP AND BE A MAN
as for the running game… yes it sucked but our best running back plays linebacker now… so yes caleb king, ealey all suck and always have.
you have a qb who is 5′11 ( dont believe for a minutes that he is over 6 feet like UGA says) i know cuz im taller than he is and im 6 feet…. history has said over and over again that short QB’s cant play the game. yes doug flutie was great but can you tell me another one that was great and under 6′1?
mike (dumbdumb) bobo maybe we should call you mike dumbdumb booboo. i remember when you played QB and you told the coach that you did not know what you were doing out there… well i still do not think you know what you are doing….. your formations suck. your playcalling sucks.. there is no reason that you should not have over 30 points on south carolina.
sorry but under 250 yards offense a game does not cut it… either quit or be fired. either way i will still hate you and you will not have a job at UGA next year

I am really tired of this begging CMR to do his job. Last year we had to beg/threaten to get a new defensive coordinator, this year we will beg, plead, threaten, etc to get rid of Bobo. So CMR only makes a change when he feels his job is on the line. Is that what we need in a head coach. Some one that can’t recognize the failures of his program. I don’t think so. He can continue to make changes only when he feels his job is threatened, but uga’s playing and success will not change until CMR is replaced.

Let’s be honest we know you can’t win every game, however you can put in some effort and play like you want to win. That was the most uninspired play from a Mark Richt team I have ever seen. Very embarassing. AJ Green we all know was very selfish, etc… but he does not play defense. I know alot of people who donate alot of money to this school are not going to put up with this lack of effort much longer. Bill Parcells is right when he says “you are what your record says you are”. We are a .500 medicore team.

RON, good points. I agree with all.
I will NEVER be a coach but I still could have out-coached Bobo yesterday.
I’m tired of so many other teams looking sharp, at least by comparison to us. Why can they do it and not us? I think we know the answer to that.
Do we fans have more GATA than the team?

As far as “Morons” go Dan, when you pay a coach millions of dollars a year, have 4 and 5 star players on your team and tickets cost an arm and leg, and you drive for hours getting there, sitting in the cold, the hot , the rain…..you can say whatever it is you wanna say. We are passionate Georgia Fans and yeah we can put their feet to the fire when they arent doing well. If youre too tender hearted and cant take these comments then leave. These ppl have the right to post things about georgia because they love the dawgs not like you. We dont just sit back and pray things will get better, we make things get better and open ppl’s eyes hoping that somehow someway Georgia can get back to where it once was. Im 53 years old and have seen alot of georgia ball and we have gone through lots of coaches and for what the tickets cost, parking, student tuition costs, what kinda money our athletic program brings in, it would seem to me that they could take some of that money and pay more for a better suited OC and quit fudging on profit so much.

Look the D players where in the right spot. They had Lattimore behind the line but could not ta whn you ckle. The scheme worked The yers need fundamentals in tackling. they were bouncing off of SC. Think about it. They were not taught how to tackle under CWM. Give them a break It will be straightened out.
And to the DAs that are saying sit AJ and Ealey. SHUTUP!! They made mistakes just like you when you were young. They just have a spotlight on them.

Welcome to the SEC Coach TG.
It did seem like coach TG defense was doing a decent job attacking against the pass but played poorly against the run why did he not stack enough players on the line to stop the run? Is that bad scheming and poor half time adjustments, everyone knew the freshman was going to get the ball.was it bad tackling on the players if so doesnt that fall on the coaches shoulders to teach or improve those fundamentals and eliminate mental mistakes. You cant blame Willie Martinez and his crew this year… Oklahoma 47 FSU 17, University of Cincinatti 40 ISU 7 just saying.

I played D-1 baseball and I new better to go out and do something like AJ did
As for Ealey a 10 year old retard knows better than to leave the scene of an accident or better yet drive with a suspended license knowing it was suspended
So yes Im for kicking them off a year what good are they to us
Ealey looked Rusty and Green didnt play and what happened we LOST!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now were basically out of the SEC east race so the season is basically driven toward what toilet bowl can we go to.
Suspend them both for the year, set an example, If Green comes back great if not who cares move on

My impression. Defense looked like they interpreted the idea of not making dumb personal foul penalties as once a person gets to the runner stay off. Many times I saw our guy watching because someone else had already got to the runner. Then once the runner broke the first hit, he was gone for more yards. I also saw them throwing their bodies trying to knock the runner down and not even trying to use their arms to hold on.
Offense -I was watching the line. This is their third year together since they had to start as freshmen. I thought they did fine with the pass blocking but did nothing when we ran. Very disappointed in the running game. When we needed one to two yards the line got beat and pushed back. I saw no holes open up for the runner. But how often do we run on 3 and 1. We still prefer a 15 yard or more pass when we need the 1 especially when we are deep in our own territory. We have a way to go and Murray will not be the issue. I also think AJ Green out is giving the others a 7 point spot. I hope all the player take notice how thier actions hurt the team.

Todd Grantham Spurrier had your number as far as how he was gonna beat your defense on saturday. Just run it up the middle, and dont you think that other teams will see this on film? They exposed your weakness and cashed in big time, i just would have thought you’d change up something and maybe you did and that seemed to help but they still ran on us and ate up the clock. If you cant stop the run then your doomed and theres no need for a team to pass the ball. Just like Vince Dooley did when he coached and ran the ball alot. I think that lattimore got most of his yards up the middle, how is it that you dont know this and the broadcasters do and why didnt you jam the holes more after the 1st quarter? I think you put pressure on the QB but hey when you run the ball with success who cares about pressure. SC ran the ball in the middle more than anything and off the left tackle, over pursuing, lack of tackling, not knowing where you should be doesnt help either.
I like you better than Martinez and im willing to give you some time to prove that your no fluke. As far as the offense goes our line should have dominated SC line and opened up bigger holes cause most of them are Juniors/Seniors so they have no excuse. AJ green would not have made much difference cause i think they would have double teamed him but Murray played well despite the bad play calling of Mike Bobo. Right now no one has stepped up on offense and is a playmaker. Georgia has got to get more turnovers and less penalties. SC had 6 to 7 offensive lineman to our 3 or 4 down lineman to me that makes SC running game more productive. Those defensive lineman got tired either from being out of shape or being doubled team so you need to blitz more or put more lineman up on the line. No college team, Coaches, Pollsters have no respect for Georgia. Can you not make goals such as “were not gonna allow a touchdown this game” or “get a turnover” or “stop the run” you know where im driving at. Get them more motivated as a Defensive or offensive unit and set goals. Our offense cannot produce alot of points against a superior defense and it will be up to the Defense to get turnovers and shorten the field. If you guys get together and say enough is enough and play as a team you’ll have better success. Theres still time…..Florida this year seems mediocre maybe its their down year, Ga. Tech seems avg as well and if you guys put the effort in it might pay off. Your schedule is light this year and you might have a chance but you cant lose anymore games like the one you just played. Get a team conference together, get back to the fundamentals, set goals, make each player accountable, and atleast try to compete. We as Georgia fans are apt to being more compassionate if you try and play hard but we are not gonna be as understanding if you try to arm tackle or come out playing flat like it was a scrimmage.

THE COACHES PLAYED “NOT TO LOSE” VS PLAY TO WIN. WE LOOKED TENATIVE. DID NOT ADJUST TO LATTIMORE.
THE PLAY CALLING WAS VERY PREDICTIBLE. THE OL STILL CAN’T RUN BLOCK. ON THE POSITIVE WE HAD VERY FEW PENALTIES. ALL OF THIS IS CORRECTABLE. WE WILL BEAT ARKANSAS.

We can gripe about play-calling, decision making, schemes etc, until the cows come home. But here is the problem folks, and it’s not going away. It’s called lack of physical strength!!! Our OL could not move their defense off the ball. Their running backs ran all over our would be tacklers. Our defensive backs didn’t even show up for this game. And last but not least, the play from our safeties yesterday made me want to throw up. I too watched the Bama game last night, as well as the Ohio St game. Those defenses know exactly how to tackle somebody. No arm tackling ,no shoulder bumping, I could go on, but I think I’ve made the point!

I have to say that I have been a CMR fan during his tenure and I really look up to him as a man and role model. But it is obvious to me now that he simply does not have the desire to do what it takes to put the best team he possibly can out there on the football field.
This not only includes what all Dawg fans saw yesterday on the field, but also what we have seen off the field with player conduct this year. There just is not enough accountability and discipline in the program. At some point this spring, he should have pulled the entire team together and told them as a team that the next arrest equals immediate dismissal for the offender and two a days for the entire team. There is simply no excuse for the lack of team discipline. It showed on the field in Columbia yesterday.
Again, I think the world of CMR and who he is as a man and what he stands for as a person. I just no longer respect his leadership as the head coach of my beloved Dawgs.
This was tough to say, but I finally had to get it off my chest. I sure hope somehow that CMR gets it and turns this around. True Dawg fans deserve better than what we have seen ALL YEAR LONG…….
And AJ, please keep your tweets to yourself. You let us all (school, coaches, team and fans) down, BIG TIME…….

God, I love this. I have a good idea for most of the people here. Return to the old west days and
have a public tarrring and feathering of the entire coaching staff-then run them out of town-TODAY.
Maybe even hanging-that much they deserve for losing a football game.

Wow! We lost to a team that will be a serious contender for the East this year. We are playing on their home feild in the second game of the year, without our #1 offensive threat, a redshirt freshman quarterback, and a defense playing its second game in a new sytem. We are trying to stop a kid who will be a serious hiesman contender if he stays straight and healthy. We lose 17-6. I’m dissapointed. We were beaten by a better team yesterday. We’re going to get better this year. The season is two games old. Some sense of rationality please.

Paul is right! AJ green and Washaun Ealey are young but doesnt mean their stupid. This seems to be the case every year…..Law breakers, and criminals are the norm just like Florida State does. Didnt Richt come from Florida State? Why did he bring this mindset with him, why not have the mindset of Paul “Bear” Bryant, Woody Hayes, someone who is a disciplineary who has strict rules and a no tolerance agenda? When you have players who get into trouble and gets alot of penalties on games that tells me theres no discipline on the team, no respect to the coaches, players and mostly the fans. If Mark Richt had harsher rules on team violations these players woiuld know better than doing some of these things in the 1st place cause the penalty would be severe. Richt was suppose to be a man of principles but these same principles dont apply to his team it seems. If i was a prominent player coming out of highschool and was coming to Georgia and knew the coach was very strict on his players, my mentality about doing things after i come to Georgia would reflect on the type coach im playing for is. It may hurt the program at 1st and the fans but in the long run make Georgia players a more disciplined team. Just my view on the foundation of building a good program as a team.

Grantham doesn’t have HIS recruits out there yet, so he gets a pass. The real frustration is in the embarrassing way Richt and Bobo obviously tried to shield Murray for the entire first half and not allow him to play his game of football. Please explain to me where is the sense in recruiting a kid to come play for you because you like his style of football, only to try and turn him into a predictable robot for an entire half of a very important game?

even though we were without the best player in the nation, have a freshman QB making only his second career start and first on the road, and an entirely brand new defense, what cost us the game was the Ealey fumble. You could see it on the SC fan’s faces. Everyone in that building knew, including Spurrier, had UGA gotten a TD that drive they would have won.
And the burning of the timeouts like a recreation coach didn’t help matters either.

What am I missing? UGA is going to run the ball this year? Seventy five yards? The offensive line is so good we don’t need to pass? SC cant run the ball? Lattimore gained his right up through the line. UGA looked like Tech from last year. SC never even tried to get the corner even with the quarterback. You can tell when a team comes to the line of scrimmage if they are confident and prepared. Ga. under Richt cannot cross the river either because he won’t allow his swimmers to swim or is afraid they might get wet. Bobo tries to cross in unlikely spots and mundane ways. Ga. sinks and drowns. Richt has not been able to find that mentality that bridges yearn and burn with simple smartness. If you have kids with skillsets wouldn’t it be to your advantage to allow some of the very athleticism you chased them for come into play? He doesn’t and never has been able to establish the fundamentals without choking down his attempts. Ga. has always played like we are lacking the confidence of knowing we can get the job done under Richt. If he would take those pretty boy sunglasses off and quit worrying about his hair he might find out whats working and whats not. In the meantime we flounder around splashing in knee deep water as usual.

He looked amazing last weekend and will prove to be one of UGA’s best in the future. This is the best team we have had in decades and yet we still needed a fumble recovery to seal the deal.
