Report: Former UNC player, considered agent by NCAA, bought Green’s jersey

The person who paid Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green $1,000 for his Independence Bowl jersey is a former North Carolina football player whom the NCAA considers an agent, ESPN.com reported Thursday night.

Chris Hawkins identified himself in Facebook messages to Green as a financial advisor and memorabilia collector, according to the report, which cited unnamed sources.

The report quoted Hawkins as saying: “I didn’t come at A.J. like a marketer or an agent. I’m not an agent. I talked to him about ‘Good game this’ and ‘Good game that.’ I wanted the jersey because I collect jerseys.”

Green was suspended for four games by the NCAA on Wednesday for violation of the organization’s rule against accepting benefits from agents.

Georgia is appealing the decision to the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement in hopes of having the length of the suspension reduced. The appeal is expected to be considered next week. Green is not eligible to play during the appeal process.

Hawkins, a former North Carolina defensive back, is “at the center” of an NCAA investigation into alleged rules violations in the Tar Heels program, ESPN.com said. According to the report, a source said Hawkins contacted several sports agents about their interest in representing North Carolina players in the NFL draft.

The NCAA defines an agent as “any individual who markets or promotes a student-athlete.” According to the facts of the case submitted by Georgia to the NCAA, Green sold the jersey “to an individual who meets the NCAA definition of an agent.”

It also would be against NCAA rules for a student-athlete to sell memorabilia to a non-agent.

“It’s in a frame in a basement right now,” Hawkins said of Green’s jersey, according to the report.

Go to secstore.com and look for UGA football jerseys. There are eighteen #8 jerseys on page 1, some of them selling for as much as $150. So basically, the conference, the university, and the NCAA can make money selling replicas of Green’s jersey, but he can’t sell a jersey that is his property? This is a flawed rule that demonstrates the hypocrisy that permeates the NCAA.

Dawgster quit whining about what others programs do . AJ got caught . Deal with it. Its unfair to the other player who play by the rules and bust their rear ends off to play for UGA. I m tired of the selfish prima donnas spoiling the whole apple cart. I wished Richt would have told AJ adios and go ahead and find him an agent.

Shawn..also, vey little talk or bashing of Spurrier for his lack of control by allowing players to live in a hotel and getting special treatment…Tenn not suspended Rogers or even punishing him for his involvement in a fight that left a off-duty policeman in serious condition..Arkansas signing a QB under the circumstances they did…My point here is not to bash these other programs or Coaches, i just would like to see Coach Richt given the benefit of the doubt when dealing with these young men as he knows alot more about the situations than we do…Do i think we need to tighten our ship…I do, but these players have to take some responsibiility for their actions..Or coaches cannot watch 24/7 as in the old days when they were in atheletic dorms….

So the story changes again

Where does the female agent fit in? Lets see now this agent put the screws to NC and is after UGA now so he must really be working for Spurrier, Lou-Lou Holtz, or Mark Maybe.

As an old UGA Alumnus, class of ‘59,I for one am tired of all this crap with UGA athletes. These guys are getting a free ride with an education from a very good University which probably relates to about 100K to say the least over a 4 year period. I do realize that many of them come from very deprived backgrounds, but that does not give them the right to go out and do what they please to satisfy their own personal desires. A.J. surely knew that what he did was against the rules, and, if not then shame on the powers to be for not setting the table with what was right and what was not allowed. If he did, in fact know what he did as wrong, then his punishment is justified, and frankly I think he should have been suspended for the whole season. If coach Richt does not stop this charade that is happening with his players, then he should be relieved of his job. I know he cannot baby-sit all of these guys, but what is happening with his players is unacceptable. He is being well compensated for his work, and what is happening with regard to UGA football players is an embarrasment to not only the Univ. of Ga., but to the State of Georgia. JMHO

Memo to Loco/Bobo: Nice evaluation on Cameron Newton. Sheesh. Let’s just let him go to Auburn. You know what Uga fans; this follows an utterly insane pattern of Uga allowing in-state quarterbacks to leave the state and then incredibly lead their respective teams to national titles !!!. LOOK: Homer Jordan, Athens, Clemson National Title, Charlie Ward, Thomasville, Heisman Winner. FSU National Title, Sean Jones, Thomasville, Ga. Tech National Title, and now a talent like Newton is allowed to go to Auburn. Not only do you fail to sign the kid, you in effect empower your rival and give them a good chance to kick your butt! Richt needs to sell the lake house, get serious, or get gone, and Bobo needs to head to Valdosta State. Utterly inexcusable Georgia fans. Newton was just interviewed after the Miss. State win. Very impressive young man who has taken the nation by storm. What in the world were Richt and Bobo thinking.?! The kid is from Atlanta and attended the same school (Westlake) as Sean Jones, your All-American safety now with the Browns. Newton was rated the No.1 Juco player in AMERICA damnit!. For the life of me I don’t see how you Georgia fans take it.You never have and never will do anything about these collossal screwups. Simply amazing.
What a program.

Why does anyone believe this garbage?

Rabun Dawg, I agree with you…however the biggest deal now is these kids are getting everything from boosters, and others while in HIGH SCHOOL. They are treated like kings and many many times by the time they get to college they are spoiled and have everything done for them and expect things to be done for them. And if the school does not give what they want they will sign with whomever ‘gets them paid”..not all but a great deal of these kids are all about “getting paid”…

Aj is one person, last i checked it takes 11 to field a team, and not one person can do it alone….i think we are covered. May just change the game plan a little but we are fine. As to the suspension, yes imo it is steep, but it is what it is….Do we say the season is over if one gets a “high ankle” sprain and he might be out 3 or 4 weeks?….no we press on…..but just leave it to the mighty AJC to beat a dead horse. I get better reporting from “rumors” around everywhere verses what these bonehead anti Dawg haters here report. Not to worry, the game will not be as close as people think Dawgs blow em out…..and to use that assinine cliche……bank on it!

Because he has had only one season of true production. His freshman season was sensational…hello world.

But he missed many games his soph. year with the shoulder, and now he will miss a third of his jounior year.

Of a possible 39 games (3 regular seasons and bowl games), he has or will play in what, like 28?

Certainly, UGA must develop other recievers.

Auburn was fortunate to beat Miss State. Newton didn’t live up to the hype and Miss State had receivers open all over the place but either they dropped the ball or the QB was off on his accuracy. A decent passing team will eat Auburn’s lunch. Guess what – A.J. will be back by then, healthy and rested up.

Tide Roll..i have asked you this several times yet you don’t have the guts to answer…Newton actually was considering Miss State but instead signed with Auburn…Why didn’t Coach Mullen who also coached him at Fla do everything he could to sign him, maybe he did..but why didn’t that deal get done…also what makes you thing the young man had an interest in the dawgs and if he did would he have gotten in school…I mean everyone bashes the Coaching Staff for taking a chance on some of these kids so if we take him what kind of backlash would have been coming…This is in no way saying the young man should not have been given another shot…he does seem like a very good kid..I know you won’t answer this because you have no answer and very little reasoning in any of your posts…I would like to know how come Bama didn’t take him…I mean what kind of staff do they have and cannot recognize such a talent…Come on “Tide Roll”, tell us…Oh by the way Bama fans this is not a bash at your team, i just am trying make some sense out of a knucklehead…

$1000 for a game jersey. Sorry but I really have collected memorobilia and his jersey aint nowhere near worth a grand. Maybe $200 but not a grand. This is a payoff plain and simple.

And for you dawg fans who think that what Dareus did was worse you guys are just as dumb and stupid as everyone thought you were.

Dareus was proactive and came forward when he realized an agent was behind stuff. The NCAA in their Dareus findings stated “he was possibly the most truthful student athlete” we have ever dealt with. His situation is no where near AJ’s who was obviously trying to cover stuff up.

Get over your Alabama envy. You punks always were inferior to the tide and you always will be.

I think SC has a top 15 team this year and will only lose 3 games. But I think UGA is much better . UGA will beat SC 24- 10. Richt seems very confident that UGA has a really good team this year. I think the reason is because of Todd Grantham. And after watching Auburn tonight I am not near as concerned about Auburn unless they improve a lot by the Georgia game. UGA’s blitz would have stopped Auburn’s offensive completely tonight. Saturday’s games will tell us a lot about who are the contenders and who are the pretenders .

Oh we can blame Mark Bradley for reporting on the Suspension of AJ Green..
And while we are at it we can blame Jeff Schultz for posting the arrest of Washun Ealy…
Oh we can blame ESPN or Paul Finebaum for announcing another arrest of Tavares King..

Play a game that means something before you start standing on your scooter shouting out how good this UGA defense is…after Saturday night and again in two weeks against Arkansas if UGA does anything defensively in those two games you can come on here and smack talk…
