Caleb King’s twisted ankle, and other notes
5:00 am September 8, 2010, by Tim Tucker
ATHENS – Notes that have nothing to do with A.J. Green:
- Wondering why Caleb King got only one carry in the second half last Saturday? “I twisted my ankle right before the first half ended,” he said Tuesday. He called it “nothing serious” and said he is practicing without problem this week.
- Mark Richt reconfirmed that three players who were suspended from last week’s game because of recent arrests — tailback Washaun Ealey, split end Tavarres King and safety Alec Ogletree –- will play this week “if they behave.” King is No. 1 on the depth chart at split end (ahead of Marlon Brown), and Ealey is No. 2 at tailback (behind Caleb King). Ogletree, a freshman, is slated to play on special teams.
- Logan Gray will get a few practice snaps at quarterback “here and there,” Richt said, but is basically considered a receiver “right now.” Richt: “He’s a guy who we all believe can play. He knows what to do; he runs good routes; he’s got good hands; he’s a physical blocker. He’s definitely going to play.”
- Interesting comment by Richt on the botched coverage by Bacarri Rambo that allowed Louisiana-Lafayette’s only touchdown last week: “I’m glad in some sense there was a little mental error that happened that didn’t cost us the game but that you can teach from. Not only to Rambo, but everybody. One mistake and a team could score. That was probably good to have that point driven home for everybody.”
- “I think we played physical without playing stupid,” Richt said of the defense’s overall play last week. Notably, there were no penalties on defense.
- Offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant, who missed the opener with a stomach ailment, is “fine now” and expected to play against South Carolina, Richt said.
- Todd Grantham summed up his high regard for Steve Spurrier’s coaching ability with this: “First off, he won at Duke. That’s not a knock. He won at Duke, then really he got Florida to where it is now.”
- Tailback-turned-linebacker Richard Samuel is sidelined with a knee injury, but Grantham says it remains too early to think in terms of redshirting Samuel. Grantham still thinks there’s a role for Samuel this year, on defense and/or special teams.
- Missouri athletic director Mike Alden will succeed former Georgia AD Damon Evans as chair of the Division I Leadership Council, the NCAA announced Tuesday.

It appears the NCAA is in no hurry to settle the A. J. Green investigation. If he is guilty of something go ahead and release it so it can be dealt with. If there is nothing to it then release him so he can play. By doing nothing they are punishing him and the team. Alabama got their’s resolved quickly why don’t we deserve the same consideration?

The mystery goes on … what did AJ do or not do? It has to be a serious matter for it to take this long for the NCAA to investigate and release their findings. I think CMR knows there’s trouble in this. I don’t think AJ will play this week and the investigation will continue. I think it’s more serious than selling a game worn jersey. I think it has to do with agents and money and insurance and issues that could totally affect his eligibility. CMR seems resigned that Green will not be there. What is the IQ and intelligence level of UGA football players. Stupid is as stupid does and it does seem lots of UGA football players do stupid things. I am getting tired of the “thug” appearance of UGA football. It’s time for a change. It’s time for CMR to change or it’s time for us to change CMR.

Mystery at UGA – you think to much when you aren’t used to it….. A.J. sold ONE football jersey that belonged to him for a profit. That’s all there is to it. Sorry to disappoint you. It was not illegal but the Hitlers at NCAA consider that to be a violation. He will probably get cleared to play this week.

If AJ has to sit out another week it’s okay as long as we show up and play the way we did last week. No penalties on defense? Now that is a stat we could never ever fathom under “Slick Willie”. With all the other players we get back this week I’m confident we will handle business this weekend. I really hope Sturdivant can come back, stay healthy, help lead us to a NC victory before he leaves, become his once dominant self again, and have a career in football.
It’s sad to think what could have been for him. Had he never gotten hurt, he would have been a top ten pick in this past April’s draft, getting the fat contract before the rookie salaries get cut after the new CBA kicks in next year.
Grantham has the defesnse headed in the right direction. They look like they are more fundamentally sound and know where they are supposed to be in every situation. If Mike Boo-Boo continues to stick with the running game this year and allow AM to let his game come into it’s own gradually and not rush him to be the next Matthew Stafford, we will do great things this year and beyond!

Richt’s right, it CAN BE a positive if the botched coverage by the defense, is a lesson.
You can’t just blame Rambo. The D-Line got no pressure on the QB as he rolled right. The LB’s didn’t get to the QB or drop in short coverage. Rambo didn’t jam the receiver at the line, so he got a clean start, and then bit on the double move. Last, you have to also include Lakatos as part of the responsibility, Lakatos’ DB’s/Safety’s showed MASSIVE improvement, but will need to rep double moves a bunch, to correct that.

Of course Grantham will say nice things about Spurrier. But the reality is, Spurrier was the beneficiary of superior talent at Florida. Spurrier wasn’t a good coach at duke, and he’s not been a good coach at South Carolina. Spurrier brags that his 5 years at SC have been the best 5 years ever in the history of the school. SC’s a 5 or 6 loss team, every season under Spurrier. Without superior talent, Spurrier hasn’t done anything at Duke or SC, that falls on coaching.

Looking back to last year, SC outgained us 425 to 320. They jumped out 14-0 and only because of a KO return and a reverse were we able to get back in. If they jump out 14-0 Saturday, we are in big trouble.
Anyone predicting a beatdown is delusional. This game will be a war. The game will be won by our defense if we win. The 2 offenses will struggle and as the day wears on in the heat, the offenses will get worse.
Depth on the DL could bite us in this game but our depth on the OL could win the game.
Total points scored on’t be over 45 at the most.

It looks like AJ will be cleared. According to the Times Free Press AJ apparently sold a Jersey to a private collector for $1,000. This violated his amateur status and the NCAA has made him repay the money. This has now been repayed and the University is awaiting the NCAA to officially sign off on it….

The Ole Ball Coach is worried because he knows this is his window and he is still peeved the game was moved to noon from 7:30pm. That is terrible. What did Stafford ever do at UGA to make him so good. He hung onto Knowshon’s shirt tail for the last two years, without one of the best RB’s in college football carrying the team, UGA would have not finished in the top 25 his entire 3 years he spent there.

SecGuy – I think CMR’s approach to Ogletree and most of the other players was fine. With Ealey though it is another story. If deliberately disobeying instructions from coaches doesn’t merit more severe punishment then nothing does. This reminds me a great deal of Bowden at FSU.
To be fair – winning at SC is much more important to the UGA fans (and obviously CMR) than the image of the program and UGA is more likely to win with Ealey at tailback than without.

Stafford was a #1 pick before he stepped on campus. The lack of D and any offensive help other than Moreno was the problem. Trying to tell me that had he been at TExas, OU, OSU, USC, that he wouldn’t have put up great numbers??? Blame the coaching staff on that one.

Let’s just hope that Richt has the good sense to give Ealey the majority of the carries Saturday. If Richt loses this game because of his own stupid decisions, the heat will be turned up very high. The South Carolina game cost us a National Championship in 2007, and everyone including Les Miles knows that. Miles even said that he wanted no part of UGA on national television that year. Richt is the reason we lost that SC game that year. He had better make the correct decisions this year. I really do not want to belittle players by name, so I’ll just say this: Ealey is our very best tailback, period, and we will more than likely need his carries to win in Columbia. Hope Richt knows this.

I really do not want to belittle players by name, so I’ll just say this: Ealey is our very best tailback, period, and we will more than likely need his carries to win in Columbia. gomdog, if SC players played football as good as their fans run their traps, they’d be national champs year after year. I hear it every year but the record speaks louder than chicken fans do.

Zander = Alexander = A. Ogletree
Alec = Alec = A. Ogletree
So, therefore it was Zander wearing his own jersey with the first letter of his actual name.
I suspect that Alec’s jersey will simply say “Ogletree”….we’ll see come Saturday.

One mistake that CMR has made in the past it not taking advantage of their opponents weaknesses. Southern Miss. throw over 50 times against SC for nearly 400 yards. They got virtually nothing on the ground. UGA doesn’t need to try and get a balance offense in this game. Run the ball some to keep SC honest and playing tight for it, but for the most part UGA needs to throw at least 75% of the time. SC knew Southern Miss. was going to throw and still gave up nearly 400 yards. UGA needs to take advantage of a glaring weakness of SC.

Good point TX. We wondered the same thing. I also thought that was a good show of respect that Aaron Murray extended to his older brother by using A. Murray. (as opposed to just assuming he was the “Murray” on the team)

UGA fans, why does Caleb King’s ankle concern you? CMR will never line up and run the football. He may talk about it, but talk means nothing. UGA could not block Lousiana L. There is no plan to run the ball. It is not in CMR’s plan. Of course, as always, check with how2fish for approval of any thing said on any blog.

We played physical on defense, but the OL needs to be more assertive and show a mean streak the rest of the season. Need to be more creative on offense and make Marlon Brown step up and the rest of the WR. Ealey will produce way better than King. He is the better RB. I still can’t stress that we have to be more physical on both sides of the ball and continue to play smarter.

I think Green should be credited for having the moxy to pick up $1000 (at least that is all the NCAA knows about now, but doubt that is the whole amount) for a worthless momento from Shreveport. With four games out, he can kiss goodbye post-season honors. This means that the best WR will leave Athens with no team trophies and no real individual brass. Tough way to end a career. Too bad he chose a program that kept him mired as an unknown player, except in Towns county.

Don’t get me wrong – AJ’S a great player and having him on the field is a tremendous boost. But we don’t need him to win games….he doesn’t carry this team. Durham, King and Brown will all be more than adequate along with a stout running game and an improved defense. And don’t forget the kicking game and our all world group of TE’S…..we’ll be fine until AJ gets back.

The way I understand it A.J. sold a jersey for a thousand and it had to be repaid to a charity which has been done. The Alabama guy did the same thing and a different mandate was handed down for them. That’s what a N.C. will buy you!
