Caleb King’s twisted ankle, and other notes
5:00 am September 8, 2010, by Tim Tucker
ATHENS – Notes that have nothing to do with A.J. Green:
- Wondering why Caleb King got only one carry in the second half last Saturday? “I twisted my ankle right before the first half ended,” he said Tuesday. He called it “nothing serious” and said he is practicing without problem this week.
- Mark Richt reconfirmed that three players who were suspended from last week’s game because of recent arrests — tailback Washaun Ealey, split end Tavarres King and safety Alec Ogletree –- will play this week “if they behave.” King is No. 1 on the depth chart at split end (ahead of Marlon Brown), and Ealey is No. 2 at tailback (behind Caleb King). Ogletree, a freshman, is slated to play on special teams.
- Logan Gray will get a few practice snaps at quarterback “here and there,” Richt said, but is basically considered a receiver “right now.” Richt: “He’s a guy who we all believe can play. He knows what to do; he runs good routes; he’s got good hands; he’s a physical blocker. He’s definitely going to play.”
- Interesting comment by Richt on the botched coverage by Bacarri Rambo that allowed Louisiana-Lafayette’s only touchdown last week: “I’m glad in some sense there was a little mental error that happened that didn’t cost us the game but that you can teach from. Not only to Rambo, but everybody. One mistake and a team could score. That was probably good to have that point driven home for everybody.”
- “I think we played physical without playing stupid,” Richt said of the defense’s overall play last week. Notably, there were no penalties on defense.
- Offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant, who missed the opener with a stomach ailment, is “fine now” and expected to play against South Carolina, Richt said.
- Todd Grantham summed up his high regard for Steve Spurrier’s coaching ability with this: “First off, he won at Duke. That’s not a knock. He won at Duke, then really he got Florida to where it is now.”
- Tailback-turned-linebacker Richard Samuel is sidelined with a knee injury, but Grantham says it remains too early to think in terms of redshirting Samuel. Grantham still thinks there’s a role for Samuel this year, on defense and/or special teams.
- Missouri athletic director Mike Alden will succeed former Georgia AD Damon Evans as chair of the Division I Leadership Council, the NCAA announced Tuesday.

UGA fans will be shocked at the true speed and athleticism of the 2010 team by 2:00 Saturday. We have talent everywhere folks and finally we have a coach who knows how to inspire! The Ole Ball Coach is worried because he knows this is his window and he is still peeved the game was moved to noon from 7:30pm. I think UGA will wear down the paper-thin USC defense and win a fairly easy one going away. After this week we will start getting some national attention as well. Fixin’ to get fun folks in Athens!!!!!

I can’t believe how some of you fans THINK. We should never lose to SC, Ky and V. Remember we beat SC lasr yr without Ealey and we had the worse defensive coordinator in the sec. We have a new qb(Murray) who has the mobility and accuracy to make plays and he has the whole offense unit from last season. Mr Richt bad game managing is the only way we lose to this team. That’s why he lost to Ky.
What the hell?

Mike, hating Spurrier is one thing and it might be partially true about him having talent at UF but to say he had talent at DUKE? Duke hasn’t won anything since he left. Are you some kind of freaking MORON?

We lost to Ky because we turned the ball over, 4 times, in the 2nd half.

I’d ask my fellow members of the Bull Dog Nation to please temper the predictions. Yes we played good D and had some nice plays on offense..but we are playing the Visor in Columbia and it will be a close hard fought game. The war chickens are no patsy if we don’t play well and smart they can beat us…that being said Go Dawgs!

Mike u r truly an idiot, or, just 12 years old skipping school. Spurrier revolutionized college football in the 1990’s. He is friggin brilliant and always has been. By the way, I am a Dawg and didn’t say I liked him..

UGA needs Ealey back even more then Green IMO. King doesn’t have the explosiveness of Ealey. If he totes the rock 20 times this week, he’ll have 150 yards. You can bank on that Pete!

I am told Ga wideouts have to (sometimes) read the defense to determine which route to run. Anyone know? Heard Marlon Brown is really struggling with this.

Rambo better make a call to Sylvester Stallone and get some pointers for this week on survival. That mental mistake probably wasn’t the only one and SOS will be exploiting it all day long on Saturday. I think Grantham will have them ready though. He looks like he is coaching the entire game and actually paying attention. We now have a defense that makes “adjustments” during the game. Wow, I haven’t used adjustments and UGA defense in the same sentence in a long time without putting “not making” in front of it. Coach Richt looked like he was into the game too!

Stafford was 29 of 32 in passer rating in the NFL last year (http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?archive=true&conference=null&statisticCategory=PASSING&season=2009&seasonType=REG&experience=null&tabSeq=0&qualified=true&Submit=Go)
That is terrible. What did Stafford ever do at UGA to make him so good. He hung onto Knowshon’s shirt tail for the last two years, without one of the best RB’s in college football carrying the team, UGA would have not finished in the top 25 his entire 3 years he spent there.

I just realized he was playing for the worst team in the NFL. Even Peyton Manning would have struggled for Detroit. I also did some research and Stafford’s #’s were very similar to many other rookie QB’s who start in the NFL. So ignore my earlier post I didn’t realize. Also Sanchez had terrible numbers as did Peyton Manning his rookie year.

Ealey sat out a game. It just so happened the first game was against a nobody. If it had been against south carolina would that have made it better? They dont decide which game it just happened to be the next game. geez.

SecGuy – I think CMR’s approach to Ogletree and most of the other players was fine. With Ealey though it is another story. If deliberately disobeying instructions from coaches doesn’t merit more severe punishment then nothing does. This reminds me a great deal of Bowden at FSU.
To be fair – winning at SC is much more important to the UGA fans (and obviously CMR) than the image of the program and UGA is more likely to win with Ealey at tailback than without.

Stafford was a #1 pick before he stepped on campus. The lack of D and any offensive help other than Moreno was the problem. Trying to tell me that had he been at TExas, OU, OSU, USC, that he wouldn’t have put up great numbers??? Blame the coaching staff on that one.
He was drafted by the first winless team in NFL history!! Was he supposed to be Tom BRady??? My guess is he’ll be there till his contract is up and then he’s out to a better team.

I am not picking on Rambo he played a great game as did the entire defense. My point was that one of the best coaches at breaking down film and exploiting the weakness in a defense is Spurrier.

Hey TNTGSC,
Alec Ogletree couldn’t start last week because he was suspended. I’d say Jakar Hamilton played pretty well in that starting spot. Certainly well enough to keep starting. Though to tell the truth, my mom probably could have run that INT back for a TD.

ESPN reports that AJ sold his jersey and that is what the hold out is all about.
It is pretty sad that you cant sell something that belongs to you.
But I would think that 1 game suspension will be enough and he will play saturday. The article said that he was honest and didnt know that he had done anything wrong.

Let’s just hope that Richt has the good sense to give Ealey the majority of the carries Saturday. If Richt loses this game because of his own stupid decisions, the heat will be turned up very high. The South Carolina game cost us a National Championship in 2007, and everyone including Les Miles knows that. Miles even said that he wanted no part of UGA on national television that year. Richt is the reason we lost that SC game that year. He had better make the correct decisions this year. I really do not want to belittle players by name, so I’ll just say this: Ealey is our very best tailback, period, and we will more than likely need his carries to win in Columbia. Hope Richt knows this.

Zander = Alexander = A. Ogletree
Alec = Alec = A. Ogletree
So, therefore it was Zander wearing his own jersey with the first letter of his actual name.
I suspect that Alec’s jersey will simply say “Ogletree”….we’ll see come Saturday.
