(Updated 1:45 p.m. Wednesday)
ATHENS – Georgia officials continue to anxiously await a ruling from the NCAA on the eligibility of star wide receiver A.J. Green. Coach Mark Richt said early this afternoon that there is “nothing new” on the matter today.
The investigation includes whether Green received an impermissible benefit by allegedly selling a game jersey, a person familiar with the matter told the AJC.
It is against NCAA rules for players to accept money for memorabilia.
The penalty in such a case typically would depend on several factors, including the amount of money received and the player’s cooperation with the NCAA.
Georgia held Green out of last week’s season opener, saying it was doing so “pending a ruling from the NCAA clarifying his status.” Richt said Tuesday that Green will practice with the team as usual “until we know something one way or another.” Richt made it clear that he expects to get a ruling before Saturday’s SEC opener at South Carolina.
“I’d be highly disappointed if we don’t hear something this week,” Richt said. “I would think we will.”
The NCAA launched the investigation of Green on July 21. On July 22, Green acknowledged that he was asked by Georgia officials about an agent-hosted party in Miami that triggered NCAA probes at several other schools. Green said he had never been to Miami.
On Georgia’s weekly depth chart, Kris Durham is listed in Green’s customary spot as the No. 1 flanker, with Rantavious Wooten No. 2, Logan Gray No. 3 and Israel Troupe No. 4. Then, in italic type and preceded by an asterisk, Green is listed as “Status TBD.”
Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said after Tuesday’s practice that he doesn’t know if Green will be able to play Saturday.
“If he’s there, he’s there; if he’s not, he’s not,” Bobo said. “It’s out of my control, so there’s nothing we can do. Wish there was, but there’s not.”
UGA President Michael Adams said last week that the matter is “being handled by our lawyers.”
Although Adams said he “can’t, shouldn’t and won’t” reveal details of the case, he was asked if the Green investigation is similar to agent-related NCAA probes at other schools. He replied: “No, I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to say that. … I think you don’t know all they’re looking at until it’s over. So if you just limited it to that or excluded that, you’d be making a mistake either way.”

If everyone is so sure he didn’t do anything wrong, why would UGA hold him out and wait for the NCAA? I’m not saying he did anything wrong, but holding him out makes it look like Georgia isn’t sure if he did or didn’t at this point. Go Gators!

I think if you read between the lines, what the NCAA is investigaing with Green is *not* whether he attended the party in Miami. The new AD as much as admitted that last week. I am curious what they are investigating but since no one is talking, its pure speculation.

The problem I have with Richt’s statement is that he is waiting on the “ruling” and not a “clearance”. Sounds like something is wrong and that we will be without AJ for possibly a few games to forever. Now with that said, this will be posted under the “updated” headline that AJ has been cleared to play.

Who knows what the NCAA found once they started digging? This probably started as South Beach but could very easily be about something else now. I have to think Richt and Co. know what’s up here and there is something to be conservative about. Hopefully whatever it is has been covered by the one game suspension AJ just served. I can’t imagine the NCAA and UGA coming out and saying he did absolutely nothing wrong.

While it appears clear Green was not in Miami, there may still be a question of improper contacts or benefits with/from an agent. It may be to our advantage for the NCAA to be slow in making its decisions as South Carolina has 3 players on the sideline while we only have Green. It is sad that the NCAA may be deciding the outcome of games by its slow process. I hope all of them will be cleared to play this week so it is fair contest. I think Georgia will win either way but it will be a close game, as always with South Carolina.

My guess is that every player on Mel Kiper’s Big Board has had an agent contact them which from my understanding is okay-given the Reggie Bush situation, the NCAA is probablty trying to get a handle on exactly what is going on out there-one of the guys sitting for USC is being investigated for helop w/ injury insurance-so they are probably looking into all contacts across the board -they need to get this done

Best to prepare like he isn’t playing. If the Alabama player got two games for his infraction, I would think AJ would be in line for the same assuming 1) he is guilty (which I am not) and 2) his infraction is similar. I would think selling a jersey or two would be similar to a free trip to Miami, but then again that depends on how many jerserys and how much money was made. Green doesn’t make or break this team. He clearly makes us better and I really want him to play, but we have receivers capable of helping is win.

Ted Striker is correct. At this point, with the NCAA having ruled on Alabama’s player with down to the penny accuracy, and Adam’s comment, it almost has to be about a different issue. Possibly something that was discovered during the South Beach party investigation. Hopefully, Green missing the Louisiana-LaFayette game will cover the playing-time portion of the penalty, if there is one.

Has anyone besides me noticed that we are undefeated when A.J. hasn’t been in the lineup? He missed most of the Auburn game last season, we won that, he also missed the Georgia Tech game, we won that, he missed Louisiana Lafayette, we won that…see the trend? What I’m saying is, if he’s not able to play do not panic. We’ll be fine with or without Green. We have enough weapons and Murray will have his coming out party this Saturday and will finally come of age. GO DAWGS!

I take that statement back, we are not undefeated without Green. We lost to Kentucky without Green but that’s the only one. He didn’t play in 4 games last season (Auburn, Tennessee Tech, Kentucky, and Georgia Tech) we won 3 of them. Plus he didn’t play against Louisiana so we are 4-1 without Green in the lineup. Put it like this, we will be fine with or without Green. If we do lose, it won’t be because we didn’t have Green.

I want to see someone offer a single credible source for the ebay story. From what I can tell, it appeared on message boards, spread from there to other message boards, and has had its “credibility” enhanced by pointing out that the rumor has also appeared on those other message boards. That’s about as idiotic as it gets. Sure, it could end up true, but there ain’t a shred of evidence yet, just a rumor circling about.
All the same, it’s understandable that it gains acceptance: people are hungry for information, and even more so as the days tick by, the South Carolina game gets closer, UGA remains uncharacteristically silent (I mean, think about it–we haven’t even had an off the record report!), and the NCAA gives no hint of a fast-approaching judgment.

Green and all of these other guys have been up in limbo for like a month or two now. You figured they would get their research done so these guys can play or not play, but guess all you need to see is how long it took for them to close the USC case.

I wanna believe they aren’t playing him in case he does become ineligible, and therefor if he plays, Georgia doesn’t have to forfeit the games he played in, possibly messing up any potential end of the year bowls are anything.

If he is found to be innocent then his record at Ga. will be short several games. Not fair to his record. Ga. may need him to win this week. I hate to say this, but the NCAA wouldn’t be taking a chance on finding him innocent of anything, and then dealing with the backlash by holding the dawgs feet to the fire…I think that it will end up being about something more than selling some jerseys, i hope thats all it is, but some of the rumors, and thats all they are, are disturbing..Don’t know much about the insureance policy, but with lawyers involver, that would make sense that they would be checking out how this insurance policy was paid for and who paid for…If they find out an agent paid for it, then AJ will probably be done…He is a good kid, i hope he has not sacrificed his junior year, These kids are bombarded with people who promise the world and take advantage of these young men…but for now AJ is innocent until we know otherwise…Its just a shame that the dawgs and other programs are being held hostage by the NCAA..again, that is what scares me, the NCAA will receive a backlash from these universities and others if everyone is cleared with no penalties…This is not good, but lets hope it turns out ok for the young man…

For all of you dog lovers…google the name Gary Wichard…he is an associate and friend of former UNC coach John Blake( who resigned monday). Mr. Wichard is directly involved with the agent issues which also opened the pandora’s box of allegations and extra benefits..from the party to hotels. to trips, to clothing, money advances, tickets, selling of property (including jerseys and athletic authenticated jerseys).
This whole thing involving AJ boils down to a couple of issues..the first one is how AJ got caught up in this deal?. Well players upon being informed by their schools that the investigator wanted to talk to begin to talk and talk about anything and everything..it is actually turning the heat on someone else. Now it is pretty common knowledge that Mr. Green was not in Miami for the party, the second question comes from that, What did someone report to the NCAA that got AJ hooked into this? If AJ did commit a violation the best outcome was to come completely clean, if he made the Investigators work to get dirt, then the results will be harsher. Someone, somewhere connected AJ to something and when the lights go on with the NCAA is mighty hard to get the lights off until someone is sitting in the dark room on game day.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think Green is totally innocent. He insisted he’d never been to Miami in his life time. And now he is not even talking, and according Michael Adams, UGA has lawyer dealing with NCAA.
Well, maybe he’s never been to Miami, but he still got some favor from the agent, or he went somewhere close to Miami (Roswell is not Atlanta, remember?).
Believe me, if he is clear-cut innocent, he is cleared already. Even Dareus of BAMA is cleared after admitting he dealt with the agent.
The question is, if Dareus is suspended 2 games for being straightforward with NCAA, how many games Green will be suspended for lying to NCAA?

This is hilarious to listen to all of you just rip the ncaa and say how football is everything. The proof is in the pudding. Just look at AJ’s high school transcripts. The kid only had a technical degree until his senior year and he was magically held back not one but two years. I’m afraid to ask what he made on his SAT/ACT, or who took it for him when his reading level is that of a 3rd grader. AJ is a great kid who was blessed with athletic talent but I blame the high schools and colleges that just care all about the sport. Maybe the ncaa is trying to set an example and stop this crap bc I can assure you it is happening at every major college and most high schools.

Could it be that Georgia did not let AJ play on Saturday because they are not sure he is telling the truth? I mean, if they believed in Green’s honesty wouldn’t they play him?
Regardless, Green must play against SC or the Dogs probably cannot win with a freshmen QB. They actually have nothing to lose by playing him. Worst case scenario is they later forfeit (lose) the game they lose without him anyway! They darn sure wouldn’t want to sit him out, lose, then learn he could have played!

I am less concerned about AJ and way more concerned about the offensive line’s ability to creat holes up the middle or give the QB time to get rid of the ball on Saturday against one of the worst teams in football. Too many broken plays. QB scrambling. We did not look very good for a team that is about to play S Carolina. That looked more like a spring game on offense. Again, the scores and stats may look good, but the play did not. That was La Lafayette. Half of our size, none of our depth. SC seemed to have a much cleaner game against Southern Miss who is a better team by far than Laffayette. Hope they wark hard at practice this week.

Mich vs ND game getting all the attention but I would rather see UGA/USCe game.
Also:
Thursday Night’s game between Auburn and Miss St will be real good, Miss St looked pretty good this weekend.
I’ll watch:
12 – GT vs Kansas (UGA/USC commercial breaks)
3:30 – FSU vs Oklahoma / Miami vs Ohio St (switch channels)
7PM – Penn St vs Alabama
10:30 – Stanford vs UCLA – should be good game

The fans paid to see Green. It is another case where you have someone in control who is not in the economic loop and thus has no customer they must serve. I don’t think the NCAA silence on AJ means anything either way – and AJ and CMR being silent means absolutely nothing. The players (and their coaches) who have been questioned by the NCAA investigators concerning AgentGate are all acting as if they are under gag orders.
The NCAA has limited resources and is trying to be thorough in investigating a number of players – and it’s not as if UGA needed Green against LaLa. Carter and Sturdivant of UNC were only “cleared” by the NCAA last Friday afternoon.
If there is no word on AJ by game time this week then UGA fans should start getting worried.

Brad Stevens,
Are you serious?? The NCAA trying to set an example?? Yeah, an example on how to make money. That’s all they ever have cared about. If the NCAA truly cared about ’sportsmanship’ we would have a playoff, not this BCS crap we currently see.
Furthermore, if the NCAA holds AJ out of Saturday’s game, then they find he comitted no violations later on, I think UGA should sue.
Think about it. If UGA loses a close game, not having AJ participate could in affect cost UGA millions of dollars in a higher tier bowl. The difference between one loss could mean millions, as in either playing in the BCS NC, the Sugar bowl or the Capitol One bowl.

The NCAA should be placed on probation for two years. They’re handling of this matter wrecks of bias against UGA. How can it possibly be right to simply keep a team in limbo like this? Until they come to a decision, he should be allowed to play. Once they make a decision, then impose the penalty if any is forthcoming. The way it is now, even if he is innocent of any wrong doing, he and the team have been “punished” by virtue of no action by the NCAA. Simply unacceptable.

No prediction of the outcome, but the more I consider holding him out this past Saturday, the less I think it means anything should be read into that. Didn’t need him, and even if there is a .001 chance that the NCAA could retroactively declare him ineligable, why risk negating a blowout win. Even if you could appeal and win that, the distraction would linger all year, but holding him out will linger about 2 seconds once/when he hits the field again. Hey gator queen, we are holding him out because the ncaa can’t get there head out of there a__ and make a ruling, and if we took a chance andplayed him and then they rule he has done something wrong then the whole team is punished. Mystery at UGA

The mystery goes on … what did AJ do or not do? It has to be a serious matter for it to take this long for the NCAA to investigate and release their findings. I think CMR knows there’s trouble in this. I don’t think AJ will play this week and the investigation will continue. I think it’s more serious than selling a game worn jersey. I think it has to do with agents and money and insurance and issues that could totally affect his eligibility. CMR seems resigned that Green will not be there. What is the IQ and intelligence level of UGA football players. Stupid is as stupid does and it does seem lots of UGA football players do stupid things. I am getting tired of the “thug” appearance of UGA football. It’s time for a change. It’s time for CMR to change or it’s time for us to change CMR.

susposidely he sold a jersey to help his family out when his dad lost his job….hmmmmmmmmmmm..understand rules are there for a reason but would think the NCAA should be more worried about agents, the crap we have for officials etc etc that really tarnish the game….maybe the NCAA can use some common sense…1 game at most…..

Southern Miss had 23 first downs against Carolina. LL had 5 against Georgia. I like our chances. SM had over 400 yards of offense against Carolina, LL 123 vs Dawgs, 60 or so on one big play. I like our chances. OL at Carolina pretty weak. Georgia Defense will give Garcia fits. The talent level at UGA and the new Defense coaching staff will separate after a quarter, and Dawgs win in a yawner, say 24-10

So, the NCAA can figure out the Marcel Dareus situation faster, and with more leniency that AJ’s situation? Marcel goes on two trips to Miami, and Green sells a jersey for gas money. That’s about half stupid. The kid has served enough of a suspension.

Let us place this NCAA conduct thing in proper perspective. The young men across the USA on full rides as athletes have it very, very easy. Kids their ages are off, away from home and college opportunities in a war as volunteers, gang. Volunteers. We are talking about weapons and such.
Yes, many jocks or maybe most come from very poor circumstances. They do need spendng money. I washed mobile homes ( trailers ) in Athens as a Junior and Senior because I needed some bread. I worked for a slum lord doing that and knocking on doors of delinquent renters. I would have rather been in Vietnam than do that. Wild that gig was. I got $5.00 for each collected rental check That filled my car with gas. Not kidding! Two or three checks and I was flush with $15.00-$20.00 per week. Gas was 39 cents per gallon too in 1968,69,70,71. Pizza was $1.99 for a large with three toppings. $3.99 with pitcher of brew.
As a high profile athlete, atheletes are schooled on the NCAA violations, etc. They know what the rules are. AJ likely will be fine but if not …………..Marvlous Marlon Brown or Durden or some body else will get a shot. This is the way that it is. Sorry ……….. they know the rules.

What is so difficult about determining if Green is guilty of selling a jersey???? The ineptness of the NCAA is unbelievable and shows the lack of credibililty of the whole organization. Why has not Michael Adams stepped up and insist they make a speedy decision.. Do they not listen to him?? The NCAA is more guilty of selling media activity than anything these players have done by prolonging a decision.

Three months to determine if AJ Green sold a shirt. Big deal. These guys are making millions upon millions for the schools, funding the NCAA and they get about $70,000 over four years in educational funding as a result. By the time you back out the restrictions on their ability to earn a living during summer like most students do (let’s say, $3500 for a summer), you have about $59,000 in benefits. If the kid sells his jersey for $200 or so, I think he is still owed about $2,499,800 more for his contributions to the university. The NCAA is a joke.

I think it’s hilarious that all of a sudden these “new dawgs”, that carried so much doubt prior to the season, are now tagged as worldbeaters, and as a team that can beat a solid South Carolina team in Columbia with or without their best player. Give me a break. Last weekend, you played Louisiana Lafayette, a team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2005. Is beating a team like that really grounds for boasting as much as you are? Me personally, I don’t really care, because it just makes it that much sweeter to watch you whimper back home with your tail between your legs when someone puts you in your place and shows you you’re not nearly as good as you think you are. I just wanted to let you know that a win against ULL doesn’t mean a whole lot, especially when you play in the SEC.

Sorry Double Down, but it isn’t a violation for a player to take out an insurance policy with Lloyd’s using loaned funds from a financial institution as the premium. In those cases, the lending institution will delay repayment of the principal and interest until such time as the signer on the note, the player for those of you playing at home, is gainfully employed. I worked for a bank in Athens and it was common practice for us to make these loans for NFL prospects.
And, before you say this is fishy, do your research and look into the articles about Willis McGahee taking out a $2 million policy the night before the 2003 national championship against Ohio State. As you recall, he injured his knee in that game but his potential future earnings were somewhat protected by the insurance money.
I’m not saying all these players are saints, but you have nothing to stand on with your comment.

A person familiar with the NCAA investigation told ESPN.com that Green did not sell his jersey on e-Bay and received less than $1,000 for it. The source said Green has been forthcoming and honest with NCAA investigators, but added there were “some twists and turns” involved with the case.
Now that we can eliminate two of the thousands of possible marketplaces for and prices of Green’s jersey, I suppose we … have learned absolutely nothing about whether or not Green will be eligible to play for Georgia against South Carolina.”

Certainly the NCAA can look bad at times, but it’s hard to fault them with having rules that do make sense. Such as: players cannot profit monetarily from the sell of items associated with thier (NCAA sanctioned sport). AJ green is not a star on his own. AJ Green, UGA football player, is. Aside from the fact that it’s an official UGA licensed product, which is a whole nuther issue. It’s not even close to selling a personal stereo.
Given that the back-up puter at Elon College would not have the same ability to sell autographed jersey’s as AJ Green, you surely see that a line has to be drawn at zero. You can also see how an open policy towards that would be a can of worms.

This is a very serious issue with Georgia. these players are undisciplined and they keep doing things to embarras the school. If this was just he sold a jersey on EBAY, they should just give him the punishment and move on, but I hate to say this but these seems like it is going to be like the Dez Bryant situation fromo last year because I dont think AJ is being honest in everything that he is telling the NCAA. I think AJ is a class guy who made a mistake and now he is going to have to pay by having his entire senior season taken from him,but as always it will be the university that will suffer. AJ will be a topc 10 pick and a millionair! Georgia will lose at least 6 games without him. What a drag! these players are all about what they can get and they never think about the university.

AD, no they didn’t. The name on the back of the shirt is just as important as the name on the front if not more so in our celebrity culture. If the number was so important people would just pick thier favorite number and there would be no real correlation between star players and jersey number sales. They don’t. Jerseys that get sold have no name plate because then they would actually be required to pay players for trading on their likeness. They are, but they get around it by not including the players name. Nevermind that the star players jersey number is the one that’s for sale. The jersey is worth what it’s worth because of who wore it, not because of what school it came from or the team logo.
If the NFL created a development league and that league took the best players out of college football the popularity would suffere greatly.

The NCAA and UGA makes hundreds of thousands of off selling Greens replica jerseys but it’s illegal for him to sell one himself? The players need to file a class action suit for revenue sharing from video games, television and merchandising. A scholarship isn’t fair compensation any more for the billions the schools and NCAA make off the players in football and basketball.

Sorry, but the NCAA can pound sand over this jersey business. These kids play for these schools, and the schools and the NCAA make millions off of them, and they basically have to live in the poor house until they either finish school or get drafted. When you’re on scholarship, you aren’t allowed to get a job to make extra money. The scholarships cover as little as humanly possible and leave the students dirt poor since they can’t work. So of course these guys are looking everywhere to make a little money on the side, selling jerseys, taking money from agents or boosters, etc. I don’t blame them; I would too in that situation.
Universities nowadays will do anything to make a buck, but god forbid one of their athletes try to make a little beer money on the side.

I think it is about time to allow college football players to be a paid by the universities. When a kid from a poor family (not necessarily A.J.’s situation) cant afford to go to a movie, while at the same time helping the university to make millions, something is wrong. I know they get a scholarship but academic scholarship students can work on the campus book store and get paid so why cant an athlete.

Word on the street is that nobody on the blog knows what is going to happen. Some of you cannot even get the UGA v. SC record straight (Christopher). Dawgs are 11-4 in the last 15 years versus the chickens. With our without Green, Dawgs prevail. I have to agree with those saying the NCAA can “go pound sand” on this issue. My kids have several Dawgs jerseys (D. Green, Pollack, Stafford, Knowshon, and AJ Green), and I am certain that none of these players got any of the income from the sale of these – even after they graduated. Why is it that being a student makes you forefit your rights to income based on your work? This is a class action suit waiting to happen, and I hope I am on the jury.

Talk about delusional! One poster on here thinks Clemson has 6 top ten finishes this decade, and 2 top three rankings. This poster also thinks the Tigers are averaging 10 wins a season over the last nine years. And some people call Dog fans delusional?
Come on people, if you want to express your UGA envy, at least come up with some logical criticisms. After all, it is not like the university is perfect.
I will make it easy and give you some examples:
1. UGA is not a top ten public university (only top 20)
2. UGA has won NCs in 8 different sports, but still trail USC, UCLA, and a tiny handful of others in that category.
3. Some polls have other college towns ranked ahead of Athens, though that is a stretch I will admit
4. Doubt if there is a NC in store for the football Dogs in 2010 (though will not rule out 2011)
5. The Dream Team Richt is assembling will likely be missing a couple of prominent Georgia athletes – the Dogs can’t get them all.

Insanity. The NCAA should establish guidelines that a school should pay each athlete, directly relevant to the gross income produced by a given sport, and establish maximum payment amounts across all NCAA schools, with slight adjustments for cost-of-living. It is reprehensible that schools and coaches earn substantial sums off college sporting events, and they are unable, or unwilling, to share some of the proceeds with the athletes.

Here is a suggestion to the UGA coaches/AD/athletic staff: Start vetting the potential players that you’re interested in recruiting from high school before you offer them a scholarship to UGA.
There appears to be a huge disconnect with what UGA tries to portray, in terms of the football team’s image, and what is actually happening in Athens compliments of the Athens and neighboring Police Departments along with the NCAA investigating folks. Nearly every week there is another negative story in the media…..what’s up with that???????

Zero.
Clemson, like UGA has had NFL-like talent and like UGA, they’ve done absolutely nothing with it. (i.e., if you’re not winning national titles, you’re not relevant)
Clemson’s last national championship was in 81. Uga’s was in 80.

Because everybody knows that winning a National Championship has nothing to do with being voted in to the game. You have to earn it on the field. UGA is terrible because they haven’t been voted in.

Like I said, this game is ALWAYS close, I just feel UGA has a better D, a more experienced O-line and more offensive weapons that’s it. If we lose that game we would have to shoot ourselves in the foot on both sides of the ball all day. Not saying that couldn’t happen, I just don’t think it will…

(2:31, YoMamma): Re Jan Kemp: In 1981 Kemp was one of the teachers who complained claiming that Georgia officials had intervened allowing nine college football players to pass a remedial English course, allowing them to play against Pittsburgh in the Sugar Bowl.
Kemp was demoted in 1982 and dismissed one year later. She then filed a lawsuit claiming she had been fired due to her complaints about the passing of players. During the time after she was dismissed Kemp tried to commit suicide twice. The University defended its actions saying that Kemp was dismissed for “disruptive conduct and for failure to conduct adequate scholarly research.”[1]
The jury found the University guilty for the illegal dismissal of Dr. Kemp and she was awarded $2.5 Million, which was later reduced to $1.08 Million. Kemp was reinstated and University President Dr. Fred C. Davison resigned. Don’t know what remedies issued for FB team.

Just to dispel something mentioned earlier…someone mentioned USC would be without their best DB (possibly) this weekend…that is not true. Culliver is in limbo but Stephon Gilmore is the best DB and he will lock AJ Green down; I’d be surprised if he caught more than 3 passes.
Where there’s smoke there is fire, I will say this. If the NCAA hadn’t been snooping around our suspended TE, Wesley Saunders, then they would have never uncovered the Whitney Hotel stuff. These kids sometimes just don’t get it.

Last evening around 8:00 p.m. the beloved Dawg Post was that AJ would be cleared and would play against USC on Saturday. Many Red and Black visioned fans were taking this as a minor matter. This is all related back to the Gary Winchard players party and his “runners”. It may take a year or two but at some point this is going to come out in the open. These top players are a tight knit group and these agents and runners are all over them, however unlike the underground drug trade in this country, these kids have turned on one another and AJ was too close to a couple of players caught up in the investigation. The thing with AJ was just in 2003 the NCAA passed a regulation regarding selling of player issued memorbilia and gifts from schools or bowls, this rule was directly pointed at UGA for selling bowl rings. AJ was not immediately forthcoming and that is where his trouble took him. Several other players on other teams were aware of this practice and opened up about everything to get the NCAA to move on to the next guy.
So if anyone thinks this is unfair, remember this particular NCAA rule was put in place due to UGA players selling their bowl rings, and the UGA compliance office stated they had addressed it.
Feel sorry for AJ and his family, it sounds from other post that his family has had some recent hard times. But keep in mind in 9 months this kid will be a multi-millionaire. The ones that are hurt are his teammates who sweated all summer with USC in their sights as the game to get them started off right in the conference. Now because of a decision he made with the influence of an agent or runner he now jeopardizes his school and they could possibly be out of the SEC race by the 4th week without some players stepping up and playing their fannies off.
Good Luck
