Richt (and Spurrier) impressed with Georgia defense
5:00 am September 6, 2010, by Tim Tucker
To kick off Georgia-South Carolina week, some notes from the coaches’ Sunday conference calls:
- Mark Richt still wasn’t talking about the A.J. Green situation, but he did have some things to say about another wide receiver who missed Georgia’s first game. Tavarres King was suspended for the opener but will play against South Carolina and will “definitely have an impact on this game,” Richt said.
- King “has been practicing extremely well,” Richt said. “He’s in great condition. He had a super summer. He seems to be a lot more confident than a year ago. He’s beginning to become more physical in the blocking aspect.”
- Richt liked a lot that he saw from the defense in its debut under Todd Grantham, including the welcomed fact that it had no penalties. “I thought our guys had some very good judgment on not taking a shot on a guy when he was on his way out of bounds,” Richt said. “Or after he let the ball go.”
- Georgia had five penalties against Louisiana-Lafayette, four on offense and one on special teams.
- The defense held La.-La to 14 yards rushing and 114 passing. More from Richt on the defense: “I think they seemed very locked in mentally. They played extremely hard. There were very few loafs . . . very few mental errors . . . and we tackled well as a team.”
- The defense’s glaring error, of course, was Bacarri Rambo allowing the Ragin’ Cajuns’ only score, a 60-yard TD pass. That brought quite a scolding from Grantham, who was generally animated on the sideline. “I was grinning,” Richt said of Grantham’s demeanor. “I liked it. I think the players liked it, too.” Even Rambo said he appreciated it.
- Richt was even more impressed when he saw Sanders Commings‘ fourth-quarter interception on film. “About as fine an interception as I’ve seen,” he said.
- Caleb King had only one carry in the second half Saturday. He “got dinged up just a little bit,” Richt said. “I don’t think it’s anything serious.”
- Linebacker Richard Samuel was on crutches before Saturday’s game to take pressure off an injured knee. Samuel was getting “close” to returning to action when the knee “just sort of swelled up on him,” Richt said. “We don’t think it’s anything long-term.”
- South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Georgia’s defense “looked well-prepared and positioned to play pretty much every snap except one.” You know which one.
- And then Spurrier got hyperbolic, saying Georgia “has maybe as good a pass rush as anybody in the country right now, the way it looked this past Saturday.”
- Spurrier, who had a free Saturday to watch football since his team played on Thursday last week, was asked if any teams across the country particularly impressed him. “You mean other than Jacksonville State?” he replied.
- Spurrier on what’s coming up Saturday in Columbia: “It’s extremely important and should be a heck of a game.”
- Have a great Labor Day, everyone.

I TOTALLY agree with the comments on Caleb King. He has one good run a game and runs into the pile every other time. I am absolutely astounded when TV commentators talk about his ability to cut and change direction. Chapas cuts better than he does! Love what he’s doing, by the way.

melanie-hobby or whatever you choose to call yourself and your alias. Such visceral hate for the DAWGS must come from a personal nature. Did a cute UGA girl or boy reject you and you settled for a red headed pimpled face hag with coke bottled thick glasses? Your nasty bitterness comes through too clearly. Find another reason to exist rather than being a DAWG critic.

1. Florida has dominated your program over the past 20 years, and regardless of what you attempt to say about Florida, their titles are more and more recent than your lousy 1980 title, which is your only title in 117 years. Second, you are right, Tebow single-handedly beat the pure living sh#$ out of your program, along with Danny Wuerfell, Doug Johnson, and Chris Leak, so there are plenty more lined up behind Tebow to kick your ass, again.
2. You did defeat Boise State years ago, but my point is that you would get crushed by this current squard. You are the typical Bulldog Idiot who lives in the past and can only talk about what happened in the past.
3. You might get by South Carolina this weekend, but if you don’t I am sure the excuses will start flying Saturday night and you will bury your head in the sand, again.
You cannot put your money where your mouth is, because shooting off your mouth is cheap.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em. Spurrier is good for football. The SEC would be boring without him in the coaching ranks. The man knows football and I believe we and the media like to concentrate on some of his remarks because we know he’s going to tell the truth and not hold punches. He’s good for our kids that play for him. I would have Spurrier coaching my son any day if the opportunity was there. A greater man than he’s ever been a football coach and he’s a darn good football coach. This wasn’t that hard to say coming from a DAWG fan.

Played many sports, including football, but the difference is I grew up with folks respected UGA with players like Ben Zambizi and Scott Werner, not all the trash talking thugs you have now. Seeing your team strut around the field against Agnes Scott Girls School is a total embarassment to the state of Georga and proves this program has no class.
Let’s talk Alabama 2008…any takers? You know the night the lights went out in Georgia.

JD, good coment and I agree. If eveyone loves you, then you are not winning, if you are winning, then everyone hates you.
Since DawginLex likes to talk about the past, then let’s discuss UGA and Florida 1995.
What about September 2008 vs. Alabama?
What about the loss to Vandy for homecoming?
There is just so much we can discuss?

The mighty and powerful SEC……Jax State….say no more. The SEC is made up of 1 team, Alabama and there is no doubt you will have to go through Tuscaloosa for the national title this year, but I can clearly recall how Utah handed Alabama their helmets about 2 years ago in the Sugar Bowl…sweet!
Best focus on teams and not conferences, because Boise could clean the clock of just about any team out there, including the Tide. Their defense is fast, swarming and knocks you into next week. More importantly, they bring discipline.

What was up with our running game Saturday? King didn’t appear to break too many runs Saturday. I know that UL-Laf had the LB’s converted from DB’s so they might have been a little quicker to the line but still I didn’t see any gaping holes up there with all the experience we supposedly have. Maybe we were just holding back a little? I hope. Otherwise everybody looked good Saturday. Few penalties. I think Spurrier will enjoy picking the defense apart this weekend.

Florida has hammered you 17 of the last 20 games, what sort of smack talk could you bringing from this sort of history? Meyer could start his Labrador at QB and Florida would still beat you like a dog!!!
Remember: someone in Athens popped off to Spurrier and said no team had ever hung 50 on the Dogs between the hedges. Well, 1995, Florida hung 52 on you and did the same the year before. Now which Florida QB did you dominate in the last 20 to 25 years? Yep, none of them.

Interception idiot says he grew up with Zambiasi and Werner? He can’t even spell Woerner.
Spurrier backed into his title after getting throttled by FSU. He shouldn’t have been allowed to play for the title. The other 2 have been won with Tebow.
No Tebow=No title
You say Boise would whip UGA and I’m supposed to believe you just because they beat an ACC school?
Facts are in 2005, not 1980, Boise ventured into Athens with the same crap being said then that is being said today and we handed them their rear ends 48-13. They play 9 cupcakes in a crap league. They venture OOC to play one or two decent teams. Their last “savior” coach is about to get fired at Colorado.
You are too dam stupid to argue with.

I suppose Athens still refuses to count the 2 losses in 1943 and 1944 to GT? Athens is nothing more than a spineless chickensh#$ school who cannot man up to losses, only when they squeak out a win against a D-1AA team.

mikebobo17int, so you are indeed a fl gator fan? Is that correct? And, your obsession with Georgia is inspiring. And for your info., a takedown is a humiliating vicious sack in the backfield for a loss. An old defensive coordinator of mine used to use the phrase. By the way, I grew up in the era of which you speak. I also remember Deion Sanders at FSU stealing jewelry and not missing a game for Bobby Bowden. I was living in Florida at the time near Tallahassee. No college team is clean or has ever been totally. It is just which one is being singled out. Yes, an USC in California was “squeaky clean” until Pete Carroll left, right? Wrong. Florida, has its “Brandon Spikes” too. But, you obviously would be shocked to discover any such news! You might be in denial. We aren’t at Georgia. I hope that we are able to manage the distractions. By the way, were you proud of your gators last weekend?

I agree with you on the Spikes issue and other related players with issues. There are problems with all programs and the reason Carroll left USC.
Not a real Gator fan, and yes they have holes, but they also have a superior coaching staff who will bring them back in line. Money still rides on Gainesville in November.

Hey interception idiot,
Since you are so into “recent” history,
What is spurrier’s record vs Richt since moving to SC?
Yet you predict another “beatdown” despite the “fact” that the last 5 games have been decided by 7 points or less.
Who is the retard?
I need to stop and follow the advice of Tide Rising:
Don’t argue with an idiot. He will take you down to his level and beat you with experience.

mikebobo17int, I believe that the November outcome will be evident after the first five games of the season for both programs. I still did not like the meyers peeing on Georgia with his stunt” time out” and tebow being left in until the end of the game routine.. We, the faithful, remember. Unfortunately, Coach Mark Richt won’t retaliate in kind if given the opportunity. That is just who he is. I don’t agree with his approach but I admire his convictions. I am looking forward to watching our SEC with pride.

Here are my takeaways from Saturday… I was at the game:
1. Murray exceeded my expectations.
2. Caleb King underperformed. He didn’t have problems “cutting back”, he had problems breaking to the outside, where there was room! Thank heavens Ealey is coming back. Message to Crowell… come to UGA and get instant PT.
3. There’s a new Sheriff in town and his name is Todd Grantham! Guys were flying to the ball and the tackling was flawless. No stupid penalties either. Can you imaging TJ Stripling and Jarvis Jones next year??? Holy smokes, this D is going to be insane.
4. We have the best kicking game in America, bar none!
5. Bobo called a great game!!! Nice and conservative, allowing Murray to get his confidence. Just what the doctor ordered.
6. I can’t stand Georgia fans who are late to games and leave early. You people are pathetic. Why spend the money to come to a game if you aren’t going to watch the whole thing. Totally lame A-holes… support the team correctly or give your tickets to someone else who cares!!!
