Richt (and Spurrier) impressed with Georgia defense
5:00 am September 6, 2010, by Tim Tucker
To kick off Georgia-South Carolina week, some notes from the coaches’ Sunday conference calls:
- Mark Richt still wasn’t talking about the A.J. Green situation, but he did have some things to say about another wide receiver who missed Georgia’s first game. Tavarres King was suspended for the opener but will play against South Carolina and will “definitely have an impact on this game,” Richt said.
- King “has been practicing extremely well,” Richt said. “He’s in great condition. He had a super summer. He seems to be a lot more confident than a year ago. He’s beginning to become more physical in the blocking aspect.”
- Richt liked a lot that he saw from the defense in its debut under Todd Grantham, including the welcomed fact that it had no penalties. “I thought our guys had some very good judgment on not taking a shot on a guy when he was on his way out of bounds,” Richt said. “Or after he let the ball go.”
- Georgia had five penalties against Louisiana-Lafayette, four on offense and one on special teams.
- The defense held La.-La to 14 yards rushing and 114 passing. More from Richt on the defense: “I think they seemed very locked in mentally. They played extremely hard. There were very few loafs . . . very few mental errors . . . and we tackled well as a team.”
- The defense’s glaring error, of course, was Bacarri Rambo allowing the Ragin’ Cajuns’ only score, a 60-yard TD pass. That brought quite a scolding from Grantham, who was generally animated on the sideline. “I was grinning,” Richt said of Grantham’s demeanor. “I liked it. I think the players liked it, too.” Even Rambo said he appreciated it.
- Richt was even more impressed when he saw Sanders Commings‘ fourth-quarter interception on film. “About as fine an interception as I’ve seen,” he said.
- Caleb King had only one carry in the second half Saturday. He “got dinged up just a little bit,” Richt said. “I don’t think it’s anything serious.”
- Linebacker Richard Samuel was on crutches before Saturday’s game to take pressure off an injured knee. Samuel was getting “close” to returning to action when the knee “just sort of swelled up on him,” Richt said. “We don’t think it’s anything long-term.”
- South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Georgia’s defense “looked well-prepared and positioned to play pretty much every snap except one.” You know which one.
- And then Spurrier got hyperbolic, saying Georgia “has maybe as good a pass rush as anybody in the country right now, the way it looked this past Saturday.”
- Spurrier, who had a free Saturday to watch football since his team played on Thursday last week, was asked if any teams across the country particularly impressed him. “You mean other than Jacksonville State?” he replied.
- Spurrier on what’s coming up Saturday in Columbia: “It’s extremely important and should be a heck of a game.”
- Have a great Labor Day, everyone.

Punt rushers need to RUSH !!! Smart punter will wait for extra seconds for his coverage downd field. Just a common sense ‘look at the film’. It’s just a common sense not even physics or math. IF PUNT RUSHERS DID BETTER JOB, Smith will never had to faircatch any. Please no more doing Martinez-like rush. Got to go, good luck/ bye. GA by 21. (35-14).

This game will come down to personnel and depth. UGA is two deep on the offensive line and will be able to run the ball as the game progresses. USC is paper-thin on the offensive line and Grantham will rotate fresh players into the game. Eventually it will wreak havoc on Garcia who is pretty good but not under pressure. UCoon destroyed him with a pass rush and pressure DB’s. And UGA now has UConn’s DB coach as well as Grantham’s 3-4!!!

With my binocs, the holes were there for CK and he just hesitates for a second and that one second costs him a chance to gain yards. CT is far more decisive as a runner. CK will not win ballgames for the team. WE is the back with CT #2. CT needs to improve on pass protect. Get CK out of there and onto scout team. Offensive line did well. They should not be expected to hold their blocks forever for CK. Tell CK to trust his line and run. Ga over SC in a close one.

Congrats to UGA on the lack of defensive penalties, that alone is a huge step forward from last year. I will admit Grantham seemed to have UGA firing better on defense than Groh, but then you were playing the Ragin Cajuns. Good luck against USC next weekend.

I wonder if any of the books about UGA football include the perspective of someone speaking for the late Jan Kemp? The perspective that “student” athletes like Lindsay Scott were playing years without taking college level courses? That the “proudest” moment of the football program was earned by players who never earned a single college credit?
Dawgtards love to return to 1980, but their memories are really short when it comes to remembering an earthshaking event that happened a few years later that showed the world what a joke UGA athletes were and what a scam artist their beloved Vince Dooley was (and is). So for all those dawgtards with short memories or who think their athletes are actually taking real courses and trying to graduate, here’s the quote that broke the trial wide open and showed what a sleezebag Dooley is:
O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
Nothing has changed at UGA, they just do a slightly better job of keeping things quiet, but that’s hard to do when 42 of your player-thugs have been arrested, isn’t it?

Einsteindawg…you may have reason to be nervous. As it seems, since the AJC is choosing to give UGA a pass on this particular subject, Mr Green has told something of an untruth to the NCAA. And he got stone cold busted.
If you think Green was held out because the NCAA pushed his case to the back of the pile, then I have some ocean property in Nebraska to sell you. Green made a big mistake, and he got busted. If he were innocent, the NCAA would have cleared him to play last week. Dez Bryant anyone?

AJ Green did something wrong! If he didnt he would have been allowed to play! I am so sick of these Georgia players doing things to jepordize the state of the program. If he sits SDat against SC you better believe he was at that party in Miami and probably has been involved in some other bad things as well. These players in Athens are embarrassing the program and they arent doing anything special on the field to begin with. They are going to need all of their weapons to beat SC this weekend. I actually thing Murray will play well, but I will say that this offensive line will need to run block better. they didnt open the holes enough. Finally, I am glad to see a guy like Grantham getting in those guys faces when they screw up like Rambo did on that one play. I am sure they have a lot of blitz packages ready for SC.

I am glad this game is at noon! Does anyone know what channel it will be on with all of the other great games this weekend? I also think Hutson Mason should play a series or two if Georgia is in the game or has a lead. I like what I see of this guy. Finally, the thing that concerns me is that this game could come down to coaching and Spurrier is obvious a btter play caller than Bobo, but Grantham can go toe to toe with SC d coordinator.

As a program we deserve all the embarrassment and commentsour rivals are giving us. This year has been a disaster off the field. UGA football has become a laughingstock around the Southeast which is hard to do with all the other teams with problems. Enough is enough, minimum suspensions should be 3 or 4 games anytime you get arrested. Even 10 wins can not erase the black eyes we have been getting this off season.
One thing does stand out to me ...nope two things

5:44 pm
I saw our receivers come back to the ball. For years and years and years UGA receivers seemed to not fathom the need to come back to catch the ball, giving some brief, momentary separation from the defender. So simple but I simply loved it.
Second thing is this: Marvelous Marlon Brown will give us some marvelous moments over the next two or three or so years. I htouhgt that he looked like a man out there at times.
Lots to build on …………..so let us build.

But that would mean that Mark Richt found his cojones. Won’t happen.
The only way to end the arrests and the thuggery is to sack Richt and get a real coach.

Why does anyone give SC a better than average chance at winning this saturdays game? Did you see that they gave up 400 yards to a crappy southern Mississippi team? Garcia looks like he always has, butt average with horrible pocket presence, I keep wondering how long it will be until steve realizes SC will never contend for the SEC let along a national title.

The legacy of Jan Kemp
September 6th, 2010

Much jealousy/envy of UGA as on all blogs about the Dogs. We run this state.
Jan Kemp exposed some irregularities in the UGA athletic program. The university manned up and accepted the consequences, going beyond the call of duty by raising academic standards above those of many of our rivals. As a result, we lost some talented athletes to other SEC/ACC schools.
UGA alumni can be proud of the academic, as well as athletic prowess. Top 20 Public University, elevated rating by Parade survey, 132 SEC titles, NCs in 8 sports.
Its great to be a Georgia Bulldog!

Wait, didnt tech play some scrub team as well last weekend? Im sure they didnt like that defense one bit since that 3-4 matches up with their offense a little too well, also the DBs werent playing 3-5 yards off their men every play so there goes their timing pass routes.
Dont feel bad tech you will always be UGA’s ugly step sister.

Tavares King should NOT be taking Durham’s place as starting SE. Kris led the Dawgs in receiving…is bigger & has better hands than King. It was also good to see Munz getting some carries at TB. Him & Chapas were used very nicely Saturday & I’d like to see that trend continue.

re: Your 11:30
We blitzed just about every third down when it was more than four yards or so…even the announcers mentioned it, and pointed out that Georgia intended to do that a lot this season. What game were YOU watching?
I personally like to see us blitz and be aggressive, but it has hurt us the last few years. David might be right that we’re telegraphing it too much, but opposing teams…especially Florida and Alabama…have hurt us when we blitzed on third and long.

turkey caller,
Was I suppose to be a punk like the UGA fans that come on GT blogs and talk crap or like the ones on a UGA blog and for some reason are talking about GT. I was actually paying UGA a compliment on the lack of penalties and was sreally wishing UGA luck against USC. I would prefer both GT and UGA to be ranked and doing really well come clean ole fashioned hate and have the game mean something more than bragging rights. That would be good for both programs and though I don’t care for UGA I can look past the hate to see what’s good for the team and national outlook on Ga. football.

We all know that the “ACC is THE ACADEMIC CONFERENCE”. Correct?
About 5 years back GT had to forfeit a ton of basketball AND football games due to cheating on grades and now …………The Tarheels are going through the same deal. Cheaters.
Tareheel is the name given the Civil War NC soldiers, when one of the Confed Generals told them that if they continued to run like yellow bellies, that he would shoot them. After that, they held onto their position like they were stuck in tar.
Now? Their entire football program is stuck in SEC laughter.

“ACC is THE ACADEMIC CONFERENCE”
==============================
Whats funny is that none of the football players would even get into GT if they couldnt play, they have one of the top 3 normal student to athlete sat score ratios in the nation, meaning the gap of sat scores is large, it was something like 400-500 pts.
