Richt (and Spurrier) impressed with Georgia defense
5:00 am September 6, 2010, by Tim Tucker
To kick off Georgia-South Carolina week, some notes from the coaches’ Sunday conference calls:
- Mark Richt still wasn’t talking about the A.J. Green situation, but he did have some things to say about another wide receiver who missed Georgia’s first game. Tavarres King was suspended for the opener but will play against South Carolina and will “definitely have an impact on this game,” Richt said.
- King “has been practicing extremely well,” Richt said. “He’s in great condition. He had a super summer. He seems to be a lot more confident than a year ago. He’s beginning to become more physical in the blocking aspect.”
- Richt liked a lot that he saw from the defense in its debut under Todd Grantham, including the welcomed fact that it had no penalties. “I thought our guys had some very good judgment on not taking a shot on a guy when he was on his way out of bounds,” Richt said. “Or after he let the ball go.”
- Georgia had five penalties against Louisiana-Lafayette, four on offense and one on special teams.
- The defense held La.-La to 14 yards rushing and 114 passing. More from Richt on the defense: “I think they seemed very locked in mentally. They played extremely hard. There were very few loafs . . . very few mental errors . . . and we tackled well as a team.”
- The defense’s glaring error, of course, was Bacarri Rambo allowing the Ragin’ Cajuns’ only score, a 60-yard TD pass. That brought quite a scolding from Grantham, who was generally animated on the sideline. “I was grinning,” Richt said of Grantham’s demeanor. “I liked it. I think the players liked it, too.” Even Rambo said he appreciated it.
- Richt was even more impressed when he saw Sanders Commings‘ fourth-quarter interception on film. “About as fine an interception as I’ve seen,” he said.
- Caleb King had only one carry in the second half Saturday. He “got dinged up just a little bit,” Richt said. “I don’t think it’s anything serious.”
- Linebacker Richard Samuel was on crutches before Saturday’s game to take pressure off an injured knee. Samuel was getting “close” to returning to action when the knee “just sort of swelled up on him,” Richt said. “We don’t think it’s anything long-term.”
- South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Georgia’s defense “looked well-prepared and positioned to play pretty much every snap except one.” You know which one.
- And then Spurrier got hyperbolic, saying Georgia “has maybe as good a pass rush as anybody in the country right now, the way it looked this past Saturday.”
- Spurrier, who had a free Saturday to watch football since his team played on Thursday last week, was asked if any teams across the country particularly impressed him. “You mean other than Jacksonville State?” he replied.
- Spurrier on what’s coming up Saturday in Columbia: “It’s extremely important and should be a heck of a game.”
- Have a great Labor Day, everyone.

This team appeared coached and prepared especially on defense. The OL was disappointing in not creating more running room. We have got to be able to run the ball with consistency. The defense usually comes around quicker than the offense on teams so maybe the OL can produce. I would like to see them play with the intensity the defense showed. Kickoff coverage didn’t seem as good to me as Richt thought it was. Our kicking game on the other end is worth 10 or more points per game in field goals, field position. Don’t get too caught up in believing Murray won’t make mistakes. He likely will but he showed alot of poise and headiness in running the offense. The SC game always is tough and this year will probably be one of those when you better show up ready to play.

JB…Agree, I have no reason to doubt that we cannot win that came. It will be tough and likely to come down to the fourth quarter but Dawgs will win. Ball Control and do not turn the ball over and the Dawgs win by 7-10 points

It’s obvious SC has no chance to win this game. I’m wondering if they should even take up network time broadcasting the game and just have SC forfeit. We all know it’s in their best interest. Anyone who could so soundly defeat UL-La has no equal in the college football universe…

Stupid Dog = jb. No nerd here either. Making comments about the dogs arrest record is not the issue. It seems most take the bad with the good and move on, however it seems dog writers etc., try to dwell on the good and ignore the bad or distractions. Beating the 1969 ACC Champs would be more impressive. We shall see. Grow a pair

Destin Dawg…I would say that Nesbut’s Heisman campaign is already over. He may be Tech’s MVP but he is not a Heisman candidate. BTW, how will Tech pay for the advertising campaign if they don’t sell out their games. Plus all those free hotdogs and cokes…

Lou Lafayette had very little pass rush and even Joe Cox was accurate when he wasn’t rushed. I will say that Murray can move around better than Joe did. The GameCrocks will be putting a big rush on Murrray and UGA’s o-line did break down at times. Murray can’t do all this scrambling against the GameCrocks or he won’t be out there long. Spurrier is going to do everything he can to knock Murrary out. There are two keys: #1) Can UGA get enough pass rush to prevent the deep ball and #2) Can the o-line protect Murray against a very good defense? Carolina has excellent WR’s – especially Jeffries. It looks like UGA is much better in pass coverage – though LL is not a SEC caliber offense by any means.

Louis Layaf ranked 109 out of 120 in rivals preseason. Yes you sure beat a juggarnaut! I guess Nebraska beating them 55-0 last year was even more impressive!!

The o line has got to do a better job of run blocking! Seems like we passed the ball alot Sat and I wonder if that was the plan to get Murry some pass exp….I’m just concerned….we must be able to run the ball in the SEC…we didn’t have one ball carrier with over 100 yards….if we can’t run the ball on SC and keep Murry in 3rd and shorts we are going to be in for a long game! King runs best on toss sweeps….not between the takles like Ealey….Thomas should get more reps he looked good/shifty…think our special teams wins the game for us in SC!

Stacy Searles was a ball of fire his first year at UGA. Since then, this clowns unit has underachieved particularly in the run block shemes. I thought the offensive line would be more athletic and physical but looks more like a team that plays in the Sun belt Conference. Its time to show Van Halanger the door too because this clown has been asleep for years now.

So Chris, to be fair, give us the Southern Miss ranking and explain how SC gave up 400 yards of offense…Sorry, but i’m not impressed by SC’s win just as you are not impressed with UGA’s win.

Here are my keys to the game: Dawgs have to rattle Garcia and contain him. SC has to not give up 400+ yds like they did to SoMiss. I expect turnovers to be even. I don’t think that SC has the playmakers that UGA has. Dawgs win by 7-10 in the fourth quarter.

Carolina will play their ass off against UGA. They always do. The teams are prety evenly matched this year in starting talent but UGA is deeper in backup talent. This will be a close game. This game will turn on special teams play (UGA advantage) or mental mistakes and turnovers (tossup). I say UGA 19 to 17.

Spurrier’s comments about Georgia’s pass rush are interesting. Did anyone else think that SC’s O-line looked a little shaky against Southern Miss on Thursday?

Einsteindawg…I think the NCAA just pushed our case back to the back of the pile. They had so much work to do with NC and Bama that they haven’t been able to focus on UGA.
