What the Dogs were saying after the game …

Partial transcript of post-game interviews (provided by UGA):

Coach Mark Richt:

“It was a good start. It’s a credit to everybody involved. It takes so many people to put the plan together and to have a team effort like that. I want to thank everybody for the job they did. And I want to thank the Bulldog Nation for coming out and supporting us.”

“The defense really stifled Louisiana-Lafayette. We did have one mental error, and one mental error can be the difference between seven points and a shutout. The defense did an exceptional job of shutting them down. The guys were locked in and played extremely hard and disciplined. There were an awful lot of positives.”

“Aaron Murray did well. He’s definitely got some things to learn from. We’ve already pointed some out and we’ll probably have more when we see the tape. That’s part of the learning and growing process. … We didn’t put a tremendous amount in the plan. We tried not to overwhelm them with the plan, especially Murray.”

“It’s been a long time coming for Kris Durham. He’s been practicing tremendously well. He’s been leading the guys during summer workouts and camp. I was glad to see him play well and have a lot of balls thrown his way.”

“South Carolina looked good on TV Thursday night, and I have an awful lot of respect for what I saw. Hopefully they will see our tape and see something to respect us too. We’re looking forward to starting conference play. Winning the league is what it’s all about.”

Quarterback Aaron Murray:

On first career start: “It’s been a long time since I played and it was great to get out there. I really felt great. I was a little nervous earlier this week, but once I got out there and warmed up it really felt great.”

On the game overall: “We worked really hard all week as a team – all preseason – and it really paid off. I’m looking forward to getting back out there in practice this week.”

On his rushing touchdown: “It probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do because we would’ve run out of time before the half (if he didn’t score), but luckily I scored. I need to work on making decisions that will always get us points at the end of the half.”

On the play of the offensive line: “Those guys are great. They’ve had my back the entire preseason. I had plenty of time all day, and got to get through all of my reads. That was a big part of our success today.”

Split end Kris Durham:

On the season opener and his touchdown: “It feels great to get back out there. It was just like practice and we’ve been working on that throw all week. [Murray] made a perfect throw and it did the job.”

On returning from last year’s injury: “I was a little nervous and felt like a freshman again. Once I got out there I felt like I hadn’t missed anything. That’s a big tribute to our strength and conditioning and coaching staffs.”

Cornerback Brandon Boykin:

On the play of the defense: “Today was just a ton of fun. It’s really fun to get out there and stop the other team a bunch of times. Coach [Todd] Grantham kept telling us not to let up and we didn’t. We still made some mistakes and we have a lot of work to do, but we’re going to work on getting better this week.”

Safety Jakar Hamilton:

On the game overall: “We were coming out just trying to play hard and play physical. We ran fast and really executed well at the beginning of the game, and set the tempo for the entire afternoon. Our twos played just as well as our ones, and that’s huge for us. We’re going to be able to go far this year if we continue to play like this.”

I was very impressed with the intensity of the defense and loved Grantham’s fire on the sidelines. You would have never known UGA was up by almost 50 points. Murray did quite well and showed no signs of nervousness. I’m anxious to see how he does against a real defense next week with similar skill level. Offense: A- Defense: B+ Special Teams: A. Overall: A- in my expert opinion….

Next weeks game is going to be a barn burner. We need to shut down the henhouse early by pinning Ben and Jerry Garcia’s ears back. That 3-4 confused me. Now we see how the Sith Lord takes it.

Hey Cuz, looks like I messed up that Oregon St pick. I thought I read that the game was at Oregon, but it wasn’t. At least it was close.

The Dawgs looked good. They looked like they were supposed to against an inferior opponent. There are a lot of other SEC teams around the country that cannot say the same. (Ole Miss, really?) It feels good to see a pretty complete game from UGA again, but I’m not putting too much stock into this one. Let’s see how we fare against Darth Visor next week.

Watched the game today and thought that Georgia played with alot of energy that has been missing in recent years. A couple questions though, did gamble play today? I didn’t see him if he did and he was not listed on the stats (tackles). Also, did cuff play after half time? I don’t remember seeing him if he did. Just wondering if any of you noticed. Hope neither one of them got hurt. Looking forward to next week

The difference in a Soft Willie Georgia Defense and a Todd Grantham Georgia Defense?

There was NO let up, no matter how big the difference in the score was.

There were NO mental lapses late in the game.

There were NO cheap points scored by the other team during garbage time.

There were NO horrible personal foul penalties by players being stupid and undisciplined.

There were NO missed tackles.

It looks like our second string plays just as smart and just as hard as the first teamers. Like they know if they outplay the first teamers they can earn a starting job.

Because that last part didn’t exist under Soft Willie. Soft Willie had his favorites (Bryan Evans) and no matter how horrible they played (Bryan Evans) they would ALWAYS start (Bryan Evans).

So, under Soft Willie, the best players sometimes had no hope of playing. Under Soft Willie, the players were handcuffed by an unaggressive scheme that didn’t take advantage of their best attributes and skills. Under Soft Willie, the players had become undisciplined and soft.

THANK GOD SOFT WILLIE IS GONE!!!

Impressed with just 5 penalties. liking how the defense forced 3 to’s. Offense hung 40. Gray’s a breakout star. Durham’s a force. Murray played great for the most part–can do without the Fran Tarkenton scrambling junk and the interception—he still thinks he’s in high school—hope he learns to trust his teammates over time and dump the ball off instead of run—3 to 1 td to int ratio good but not great. Mason was spectacular–walked up to the line, dropped back, threw a td on his first pass–no interceptions—8th guy in NCAA history to throw an td on 1st pass–special talent. Jakar & Cummings & Boykin made plays on defense. TJ & Houston wreaked havoc all night. Butler and Walsh shined again. Marlon Brown was making plays–we need to get him more touches. Branden Smith was runing like a man on fire. No fumbles from Smith or King. D-Line played tough against the run. Like to see tight ends play up to their potential.

Ditto.

What I liked was only 5 penalties and just one turnover. Also Murray’s ability to tuck and run if he didn’t see anything.

Let’s get AJ on the field next week. Also, we did not use Charles at TE like we could have — can’t wait to see him full throttle next week!

How would y’all like to be Houston Nutt this week?

Hey Gangly One – Get Off Aaron Murray!! Give me a break! This was the kid’s VERY FIRST college game playing as a red-freshman, and first time playing football in 2 years. The reason he had to scramble was nobody was open for him to throw to on that play right before halftime. So as opposed to throwing a bad pass for an INT or running out of bounds and playing it safe, he saw the open lane and took it to the house. That’s the mentality of a WINNER, not a LOSER. When you’re up by 30 points, those decisions are less forgivable if you don’t make it versus being in a nailbiter. The good thing is he has the ability to get better and will with more experience. And as far as the interception goes, that was Durham’s fault. That pass bounced off his hands to the DB. Durham and Logan Grey had better tighten it up. Grey also dropped a TD pass in the first half on that scramble and throw. No excuse for that ball going right through his hands!! I don’t know where you get this “BREAKOUT STAR” and “FORCE” crap from. Those two WRs (Durham & Gray)had sub par games from what I saw. They had better not make those same mistakes against the tougher opponents we have coming up or else it’s gonna cost us. Aaron Murray reminds me of a slightly more athletic version of Drew Brees. This kid is a WINNER and I am so happy he’s playing for us. It’s gonna be alot of fun watching him and all his young teamates grow together the next 3 – 4 years with the new coaches now firmly in place!!

Great Game – Go DAWGS!!!!

Lots of good things from this game as we head into conference play and Columbia next week. Nice pick by Jakar “hitman” Hamilton for a TD. But what I really loved seeing was hutson Mason coming in and first play ever in collge…are you kidding me…throwing a nice touchdown pass. Guess we will not have to guess any more if UGA plans to redshirt him. Go Dawgs!

Enjoyed game overall but have to take one thing away. For this OL to be older, we definitely had some break-downs in run blocking at times. One thing I’ve noticed is for King to have success, he really needs a decent hole. At times, the Cajun D was in the backfield as soon as it was handed off. Murray did great-cut down on some of the scrambling and learn to SLIDE–don’t lunge head first. Like CTG and his intensity–Rambo sure knows about his intensity. Good first showing-good for Mason also. Did notice the better effort on tackling and usually the first one arriving got the job done. DB’s and safeties passed also. Encouraged but lets keep the fire for USC-gonna be difficult but I know we can pull it out. Study guys, GATA and bring it home. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The game felt different. I saw passion, energy, swagger, aggressiveness, discipline, intensity.
Is this UGA? I felt good about the day and about this team. There is something special in the chemistry. What about the D? Coach TG had them fired up. Loved the way he would not accept poor play that resulted in an easy td. Wish CMR would show a little more intensity. He sometimes looks like a casual visitor on the sidelines. Good start to 2010. We will get the real gut check next week. Go Dawgs …. whip Darth Visor.

A few concerns were poor kickoff coverage the first three times we kicked off. Taller receivers might have allowed LL to complete a few more passes especially in the first half. They missed on several opportunities that were there. To our credit the intensity and speed on defense looked good. I felt the offensive line didn’t open up the holes for the running game and allowed too much pressure on Murray several times. Murray did a good job overall and looked in charge and showed some confidence. We didn’t make an excessive number of penalties and do that stupid stuff such as celebrating on every play made, late hits, taunting, etc. The team looked well coached on defense and presented a workman like effort. Good pursuit on defense and this never let up. I got a good impression from Grantham that he won’t let them let up. This wasn’t the level of opponent we will be facing next week but overall there were a lot of good things showing. Still feel the OL needs work and we better be able to run the ball better than what we did yesterday.

UGA looked like a real football team. The defense played well and played very smart ball. The offense still has work to do. Murray was outstanding and I am looking for big things out of him. I was not that impressed with the run blocking. We are going to have to play a balanced game on offense next week because they are going to blitz every chance they can. We are going to have to hit those big SC receivers hard every chance we get and don’t over pursue. Great game dogs, now let’s get ready for the real test.

Great and beautiful day at Stanford. 55-7. Pizza downtown. 9 holes all with my old college roomie. A+ across the board with the exception of run blocking. Laf had some big boys but we didn’t move much. I liked the pass blocking, the pressure came form blitzes and AM felt it and showed terrific escapability. He had just 3 bad plays. Before his TD run, with 8 seconds left, I said,”I hope he knows he has to throw it in 3 seconds, no running around. AM knew his speed and saw 6. I think that if someone was going to hit him on the 5, he would have jumped out of bounds to preserve a second and the FG. Let’s make SC our next Lafayette!

So your team did ok against a high school team..good going guys! So how many more of your boys will be taken off the team for DUI’s, public intoxication, infractions with the NCAA, poor grades, etc? I would be ashamed if my team had so many infractions & the season has not even started. Coach Richt needs to get a lot less soft & a lot more hard on these “bad boys”. He should not be there friend, but their coach & make them pay the penalty for screwing up…kick them off the team…show some authority for God sake!

LOL!!!! that’s funny man, real funny. Yeah I really missed the soft zone, DBs playing 10yds off the line. “Read and React”, yeah getting rid of CWM was a real mistake.

Hate on Haters!!! The Junkyard Dawgs are BACK on defense, and all the offense and our “midget qb” did was go out and score 48 pts WITHOUT our #1 &#2 WRs and our #1RB. Call LA-Laffayette a middle school or whatever, bottom line we crushed them like a good team is supposed to. We gave up ONE big play on defense which accounted for nearly half of their total yardage for the game! (128 total yds, only 14yds rushing)
Again haters keep hating the Dawgs will keep getting better and stealing hopes and dreams each week, next victim SC….
