Alabama hears from NCAA, but Georgia doesn’t

The NCAA issued a ruling Thursday in one agent-related investigation, declaring Alabama defensive lineman Marcell Dareus ineligible for two games. But no ruling came down in several other cases, including Georgia’s.

Georgia did not hear from the NCAA on the matter Thursday and has not gotten any indication of whether it’ll hear before Saturday’s season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette, associate athletic director Claude Felton said Thursday night.

Dareus was penalized by the NCAA for accepting $1,787 in improper benefits during two trips to Miami, where an agent-hosted party triggered NCAA probes at several schools.  The NCAA required Dareus to donate that amount of money to a charity of his choice as a condition of reinstatement after missing two games.

Georgia was informed of an NCAA inquiry on July 21, and wide receiver A.J. Green said the next day that UGA officials asked him about the Miami party and that he was not there. Green otherwise has declined to comment about the NCAA probe, per Georgia’s instructions.

Coach Mark Richt was not available after practice Thursday. Asked a day earlier if he expects Green to play Saturday, Richt replied: “You know I can’t talk about that.”

Caleb King welcomes the increased workload that could come his way Saturday because of the suspension of fellow tailback Washaun Ealey.

“If they asked me to carry 100 times,” King said, “I’d probably do it with a smile.”

He could at least surpass his career high of 18 carries.

“Of course I want to be the focus of the offense,” King said. “What running back doesn’t want that? I’m excited for this opportunity and trying to do the best I can.”

King said he hasn’t been told how many carries to expect against Louisiana-Lafayette. Richt said Carlton Thomas will get carries and Fred Munzenmaier also “could get some totes at tailback.”

Ealey was suspended by Richt for at least the first game after being arrested last Friday on charges of hit-and-run of a parked vehicle and driving with a suspended license.

“He’s down, but he’s still on the sideline talking and trying to hype everybody up,” King said of Ealey. “From the sideline, he can tell me what I’m doing wrong and what I need to improve on. Of course I’m listening to him. I know he’s mad he can’t play the first game, but I know he’ll be ready … the following week.”

Yeah, Guilty of what?

you are kidding yourself if you think that our new AD has that much clout with the NCAA.

You know Dawg_Mike, I couldn’t care less……but he’s obviously done something or the NCAA wouldn’t be sniffing around (I mean, where’s there’s stink there’s usually something (you hiney sniffers should know this). Maybe the AD’s pleading request will take longer than the actual A J Green investigation and by then all will be forgotten by the UGA Faithful……I doubt it, but it could happen.

Warrant issued for UGA football player
9:58 am September 3, 2010, by Tim Tucker

Me thinks UGA is recruiting the wrong type of football players……maybe they should do some background investigations before offering them a scholarship……oh, I forgot…..they already do that and the UGA Athletic Department doesn’t really care…..that’s what football factories do!!!!!!!

A 35 dollar helmet supposedly swiped on June15 th.That is some silly crap…I don’t understand why it took the APD 3 months to press charges.I mean silly stuff like this used to NEVER be made public. That could have been a prank or some sort of hazing …this kind of foolishness used to be handled by the coaching staff….now it’s breaking news.Geesh

Police Blotter

Another UGA player charged…let the excuses begin….a. it was a 35 dollar helmet , b. it is a minor crime. c. he is a young kid, d. he thought it was a gift, e. he comes from a disadvantage family, the list and excuses go on and on….

Now onto the USC game…..after the first possession on both sides of the ball, USC looked pretty darn good…both QB’s can run that offense….the Lattimore kid is going to be a load to stop if the front 3 of UGA does not hold up( which if you ask any UGA coach they will tell you that is the one area of weakness they have and the difference from great UGA defensed in the previous years) and off goes a 100 yard game for these USC backs. USC has 3 very tall Wideouts..could cause problems for many many SEC teams not just UGA. Kicking is good for USC( NOT as good as UGA’s kickers) to keep you honest. USC defense will give up some big plays, but the front 7 are studs, USC DB’s are the weakness…a good passing game will make USC blitz more and open up some holes for the RB.

AJ Green….something is just not right here….other schools and players have know for a few days now their status…although USC and UNC did not want to come out and say it….they were told not to play these guys and the kid from UNC was NOT going to play in any games this season, the USC situation is due to the kid lying to investigators, and coaches….

Good Luck to your teams….This season is going to be fun

Olgetree? Great, WTF it takes the Athens Police/UGA police 2 months to file an arrest warrant? A day before the season begins?

If AJ was in serious trouble it would have come out by now. CMR will not have a player lie to him, (he kicked Mett of the team for lieing to him). AJ told CMR that he has never been to Fla. so AJ will play Sat. If he wasn’t going to play CMR would have indicated as much by now.

Wonder why it took Police 3 months to investigate a so called helmet theft? Wonder why they issue the warrant the day before the opening game of the season? This does not pass the “sniff” test. One thing is for sure, CMR will get to the bottom of this today (not 3 months from now), and he will deal with AO accordingly.

Nothing like getting the blog hits fired up 5 hours before any actual story is available. I realize that it’s public infermation, but is thee any journalistic duty to actual have details before rushing to get this headline out? I would think that a 3 month FBI crime scene investigation could wait a half day before rushing to sell some tires with it.

Tide Roll you are really stupid or really trying to be funny – but aren’t. I guess the guy Bama just had suspended by the NCAA for two games was investigated because he was black and because Saban gave them permission to investigate him because he was black? He was investigated because he was suspected of violated rules of the NCAA. Even Saban can’t control who the over reaching NCAA investigates and certainly Richt has no influence on the NCAA ego maniacs. You should be banned from the VENT until you et a brain.

So we are waiting to hear from Police Chief Roscoe P Coltrane? Is that who runs the UGA PD now? Arrest a kid for a helment theft? A theft that occurred between the hours of 4PM and 10:45PM. Olgetree must have staked that helment out for hours. PLaying football where does he have 6 hours and 45 minutes to wait for somebody to move away from their bike helment?

Regarding the arrest warrant: Can’t you go to the practice field and talk to the kid? Have “come down to the station”? You know where to find him on any given day. “Kiddie cops” was the term for the campus police when I was there. Somethings never change.

WTF? The artical says the owner of the bike helmet reported it stolen back on Jun. 15th. Why the he** did they wait until the day before the season starts to question Ogletree? How the heck did they even know he allegedly stole the helmet? And what all of a sudden made this “victim” decide to change his mind & press charges today?

That is so jacked up fishy smelling it’s funny.

Ok, which one of you media dorks or GT idiots paid this guy to change his mind & press charges?

UGA police are making things tough for themselves. They clearly have a grudge & jump at any chance to hurt the football program. Takes them all of 30 seconds to make sure every little event gets blasted to the media & sensationalized. They better be careful or fans are going to go ape**** on them.

The NCAA owes it to UGA and go public. Either Green went to Miami and the NCAA has proof or they do not have a shred of evidence. If the NCAA wont make an announcement, UGA can not be blamed for playing Green. If Richt believes A.J. then back him up and play him! And all of the other schools involved should back their players too!

“GaTruth?” – It’s all in fun. HOWEVER, I’ve heard stories of the Dallas Cowboys back in the Tom Landry era, that when someone got out of line and made the team look bad, a couple linebackers would drag the perp into the shower and just beat the cr@p out of them – end of problems. Richt should “order the Code Red” and ensure that the lunacy comes to an end. I hate to say it, but it looks like Eugene “I know tomorrow is the Super Bowl and it’s 3 a.m. but how much?” Robinson would fit right in with the current crew of UGA idiots. Someone please kick the cr@p out of Ogletree. A $35 helmet – un-freaking-real…

Still no answers, I’ve gotta say I’m darn proud to be a GT fan right now while we watch your program crumbling in Athens. Another day and another Georgia player in the Athens Clarke County jail. You must be so proud. And all of you who think this AJ Green inquiry is all about the trip to Miami should wake up and smell the coffee. When the NCAA launches an inquiry they can look for anything and everything. So there may be a lot more to this story. And frankly it sounds like there is.

This holding AJ out for the first game seems crazy. Based on what we know, there is no evidence to suggest he has done anything wrong. Alabama was at least able to get the NCAA to rule on their player. Why can’t we push for a timely ruling? Otherwise, play the kid. He has been adamant about never even having been to Miami. If we believe him, let him play. If it turns out he’s lying, he’s gone – dismiss him from the team. Dismissing your best player from the team is more than the NCAA would require and there would be no further penalties. Surely he’s not ineligible just because the NCAA has interviewed him.

Dealing with young people these days is a full-time job. I never think anything is gained by finding joy when any college kid is in trouble. I like it when each team is at their best and the best team wins.

As far as South Carolina…. They always play Georgia well. Steve Spurrier is a great coach. I don’t think his behavior is always admirable.

All of us must take responsibility for bad behavior. While it is understandable that many of these young men are tempted to give in to the big money agents and alumni offer…. They know the rules and the cost it could mean for their team.

A salute to all the folks on this blog who expressed their opinion with respect. It is something this country is short on these days. We seem to think winning, no matter the contest, is more important than how we behave as men and women.
