UGA will open 2012 football season vs. Buffalo

ATHENS — Georgia has agreed to open the 2012 football season against Buffalo, UGA associate athletic director Arthur Johnson said Thursday.

The game, which will be the first-ever meeting between Georgia and Buffalo in football, will be played Sept. 1, 2012, in Sanford Stadium.

Georgia will pay Buffalo $975,000 for the game, Johnson said. That matches the most UGA has agreed to pay an opponent to play in Sanford Stadium.

Also, Johnson said UGA is in the process of completing a deal with Georgia Southern to play in Athens during the 2012 season.

The Bulldogs had two openings on the ‘12 schedule and figured all along that one would be filled by Georgia Southern, which UGA is in the habit of playing once every four years. The Eagles played in Athens in 2000, 2004 and 2008.  To preserve maximum scheduling “flexibility,” Johnson said he wanted to complete negotiations on the other game — Buffalo, as it turned out — before finalizing a Georgia Southern deal.

boo.

I would liketo see Georgia State on a 4 year cycle in the GREAT town of Athens. I know they are a cakewalk now, but i truly feel they will be a great program within 5-10 years.

Before we know it, Georgia State will be THE team in Atlanta. With all do respect, the engineering, and engineering only ciriculum at Tech is going to hurt them when there is going to be another school with a hugly supported football program just a few blocks away. With an enrollment of 30,000+, and a wide open ciriculum, Georgia State will be a huge magnet for recruiting. While UGA will always be football King in the state of Georgia, Georgia State will be #2 before we know it.

No wonder UGA and Richt usually win 10 games. Only 60 other teams in the nation that win 10 with that schedule!! UK, Vandy, Buffalo, Ga. Southern, UT (now a joke), Yech, Miss St., other OOC joke, Mississippi makes 10 wins without the opportunity of a loss. UGA is certainly the top talented team in the nation that plays the absolute weakest schedule. Ohio State plays Miami….UGA plays Buffalo. WOW! Way to go Richt no wonder you usually win 10. LOL

UGA is doing little brother Georgia Southern a favor by giving them a big payday and letting 93,000 fans watch them. Interesting that Tech so far has skipped Ga. Southern, but will play G-W and Jax State.

Playing Buffalo gives the Dogs a chance to renew the rivalry with Chan Gailey. The Bills will likely be a 3 point favorite.

Take a look at the Florida Gator’s schedule over the last ten years. They open with two cream puffs, followed by another one or two during the season. Does their soft schedule hurt them. NO! Any player who is suspended sits out the first two games, ready too play for the big games. Do they have a game West of the Mississippi. NO!

I can only assume that the folks complaining about Georgia’s schedule are 12 year-olds or someone who has lost their memory. Richt winning 10 games only because he schedules cake teams? Hello. We play in the SEC, schedule the reining ACC Champ every year (sure its a weak Conference) and have scheduled plenty of tough non-conference teams through the years. Think Oklahoma State, Arizona State. Even Colorado was an upper-level Big 12 team when we scheduled them. So we play Buffalo in 2012, many teams schedule a team that they can get to come play in your stadium without a HOME-AWAY series. And considering we are not scheduling GA Southern every year but once in a 4 year cycle, what’s your beef?

Bama Dawg

August 26th, 2010
7:27 pm

We play GA Southern every so often to benefit their program, which is good for the state of Georgia. There are a lot of ties there (i.e., Erk Russell) just like there are a lot go ties between UGA and Auburn. If GA State is good enough for Alabama to play, why not give them a shot every now and then. We all know that we aren’t going to schedule an intersectional rival with the SEC schedule we have. May not like it, but that’s the way it is.

I might be the only person in the universe who cheers for both Georgia and Buffalo (obviously not equally), but the Bulls will be a nice match up. Remember, they won the MAC in 2008. It’s not like we picked them to avoid playing UNC or anything. Plus, we play at Louisville that year anyway (a game we scheduled before they tanked, by the way).

As a Georgia grad and Georgia State law student, I’d love to see us play the Panthers. I feel like they definitely need a few years to get established though before that happens.

Ga State guys please play a game and at least win one before talking so much trash. And east macon tech doesnt count.

do you dog goobers really think your 5 star recruits come to your university to play the ga southerns of the world? If they only have 12 games each in the four years they have of their college careers, would they not want to see if they can hold their own against other Div I teams, in and out of conference? I realize losing to Oklahoma State has probably something to do with this, but if you really want to be some kind of national power house again, play the big boys, and that goes for Alabama as well. PLAY SOMEBODY

on the other hand, I guess if your suspending 8 to 9 players in the game opener for actions committed prior to kickoff that year, then you would not want to open with anyone to save face. Knowing you got to suspend players to make it look like you have standards the NCAA and SEC would approve of..like Dooley and Saban as well. What a joke

Why can’t we hire some plantation negroes like they do at Auburn and Alabama and Southern Cal?

They sign them up and lock them in their rooms other than to come out and play. No scootergate.

I thought we were signing good folks who were good athletes? Seemed like a good idea but are there any out there?

The always “pretty good” UGA Bulldogs are not Ga Southern’s “big bro”. UGA enters its 119th football season with over $100 million annual revenue, great recruiting ground, and their one Nat’l Cahmpionship thanks to Erk Russell, Herschel Walker, and a fluke play to beat Fla – Lyndsay Scott! Lyndsay Scott!, and thank God Notre Dame turned the ball over 47 times in the Sugar Bowl. UGA is an underachieving embarrassment to State of Georgia Football. 2010 = 7-5 to 8-4 with a trip to a Who Cares Bowl and thousands of Dawg Fans complaining that the SEC is tough and officials are biased. BTW, how can it be “College” Football when you have players on your team who can’t spell SAT??

Georgia southern? Get real—UGA would beat them by 50 with their backups. Ga so needs to stick with the small time ball—-the big Dawg plays at another level.

home&home, you are right. ga southern fans, to a man, hate UGA. All they do is spout hate against UGA. They and their former coaches start vicious lies and rumors about UGA. ga southern is happy to take the charitable donation UGA gives them, but ga southern and their fans have an ultimate goal of destroying UGA. georgia tech has never given ga southern a game or a charitable contribution. ga southern or their fans have never said a bad word about ga tech. In fact, gs southern fans actively support their ex coach and pull for gt to defeat UGA. UGA should never play ga southern ever again. UGA has nothing to gain. If UGA schedules ga southern again, this 25 year season ticket buyer will never buy season tickets again!

EaglesCliff, if UGA is as bad as you say. perhaps ga southern should not continue to beg UGA for a game/charitable donation. UGA could schedule the real GSU (GA State Univ) and maybe someone outside of Bulloch would care about our opponent.

Also and furthermore Benedictine, who chooses players and gives them scholarships, is pitiful. They can’t win even in a low league with chosen players.

Just in case I haven’t been clear, I would like to point out that ga southern university and their fans hate UGA. They never miss a chance to smear and defame UGA. They are extremely jealous of UGA and all of our tradition. ga southern fans even think the great Erk Russell is theirs. Everybody knows Erk is a Dawg.

ga southern begs us to schedule them. ga southern fans pull hard for ga tech to defeat us.

ga southern would like to bring UGA down, they are our enemy. UGA should never play ga southern again. Playing them again would give them relevance. THEY ARE NOT RELEVANT!

ga southern is not relevant even in the inferior, lower divisions of football (1AA), or whatever they call it.

I get a kick out of the arrogance of the UGA fans on here; it seems that Athens, Georgia is rapidly becoming the “Hit and Run” capital of the SEC. So now Georgia’s “Hit and Run” Offense is in full swing and that Damon’s MidNight Panty Raid and Ealey’s 3AM spin in his roomies ride found something to hit besides an opposing defender; no doubt secured The University of Georgia as the hands down favorite to capture this years “Fulmer Cup”. I don’t know which one of you “G” chewing dog squeezes (69dog I think) made a comment about the Georgia Southern game being irrelevant or something. Well since they run the same offense as Tech now, the one originally developed under Coach Johnson at Southern it would be a good idea to at least get some more reps against it. before playing Tech. But of course 69dog like his bone head pooch pals are too drunk on Bulldog Cool Aid to get it and must be excused for their ignorance. As everyone else already knows .

Ga southern fans need to wake up—-your program is small time, irrelevant. Ga southern should switch back to Div II so they can win something.

Of course Ga Southern is irrelevant to ThUGA and the other minor league NFL program that pose as college football. What I want to know is why UGA has Top 5 money, Top 5 recruiting ground, and Top 5 attendance, but cant win a damn thing? At least Alabama fans demand excellence and Championships, Benedictine is pitiful, unfortunately and symptomatic of how low Savannah Football has become, “69dog” (who knows me, but doesn’t reveal his own ID).

The people of South Ga deserve a University with the same graduate programs available in the North. South Ga people who support UGA without alumni affiliation are supporting the institutionalized discrimination of South Ga by the Board of Regents and the Legislature. Go Dawgs, you’ll beat the Ga Southern’s and UL-Lafayette’s, but what about your own level? LOL

UGA fans and alumni, take a look at the crap posted by EaglesCliff. He and many, many more ga southern fans blame the third rate status of their school on UGA. ga southern fans want money and resources to be taken from UGA and given to them. On the other hand they never complain about georgia tech who is mainly in the business of educating out of state foreign students.

ga southern spouts hate for UGA, but begs for games/handouts from UGA.

UGA fans and alumni, call the Athletic Director and anyone you know! Tell them to not schedule ga southern in football or any other athletic event. UGA has nothing to gain and everything to lose. Believe me, or ask a Michigan fan what losing to a 1AA team did to their program. Nothing to gain.

Is there not a team we can play that someone knows where they are unless you have hire a private investigator?
Just don’t schedule Oka State…enough of those powerhouses!

Yeah, I think Georgia State can make some waves eventually. They’re gonna end up with an odd group of players that were overlooked or washed out from other places–players that are hungry to play and eager to prove themselves. A lot of these players are going to pick Georgia State over JC or other small schools since they can actually get a real degree and play in a big time stadium in a major market for a name coach.

They’ve got what sounds like a good group of coaches and a surprisingly large alumni base of folks that actually have jobs and make money–not to mention a great place to play.

UGA needs to get them on the schedule very soon. Go Dogs!

SEC Schedule + Tech + Other

August 29th, 2010

We play an 8 game conference schedule in the toughest conference in the land, plus Tech, plus one other BCS opponent. Two cream puffs on top of that is absolutely fine, and from a scheduling standpoint, it is necessary in order to have 6 home games due to the Jacksonville thing.

The GA Southern game in Athens is a blast. Folks who live and work in downtown Athens will tell you that they bring more fans than anyone but Tennessee. It has the feel of the Auburn game; spirited but friendly, with many family ties. Any college football fan looking for a good time should make it to Athens the Friday night before that game.
