UGA will open 2012 football season vs. Buffalo

ATHENS — Georgia has agreed to open the 2012 football season against Buffalo, UGA associate athletic director Arthur Johnson said Thursday.

The game, which will be the first-ever meeting between Georgia and Buffalo in football, will be played Sept. 1, 2012, in Sanford Stadium.

Georgia will pay Buffalo $975,000 for the game, Johnson said. That matches the most UGA has agreed to pay an opponent to play in Sanford Stadium.

Also, Johnson said UGA is in the process of completing a deal with Georgia Southern to play in Athens during the 2012 season.

The Bulldogs had two openings on the ‘12 schedule and figured all along that one would be filled by Georgia Southern, which UGA is in the habit of playing once every four years. The Eagles played in Athens in 2000, 2004 and 2008.  To preserve maximum scheduling “flexibility,” Johnson said he wanted to complete negotiations on the other game — Buffalo, as it turned out — before finalizing a Georgia Southern deal.

C,mon..We can do better..I have to wonder if Damon scheduled this before he left…Southern is fine, but a better opponent is in order for the other game, especially with turner Gill leaving.

Can we do better, sure. But why? Our schedule in ‘12 is tough enough. The usual SEC East guys plus an @ Alabama and Ole Miss at home. Don’t forget about an @ Louisville. We play GA Southern every 4 years to help an in-state school earn a nice payday.

boo.

I would liketo see Georgia State on a 4 year cycle in the GREAT town of Athens. I know they are a cakewalk now, but i truly feel they will be a great program within 5-10 years.

Before we know it, Georgia State will be THE team in Atlanta. With all do respect, the engineering, and engineering only ciriculum at Tech is going to hurt them when there is going to be another school with a hugly supported football program just a few blocks away. With an enrollment of 30,000+, and a wide open ciriculum, Georgia State will be a huge magnet for recruiting. While UGA will always be football King in the state of Georgia, Georgia State will be #2 before we know it.

No wonder UGA and Richt usually win 10 games. Only 60 other teams in the nation that win 10 with that schedule!! UK, Vandy, Buffalo, Ga. Southern, UT (now a joke), Yech, Miss St., other OOC joke, Mississippi makes 10 wins without the opportunity of a loss. UGA is certainly the top talented team in the nation that plays the absolute weakest schedule. Ohio State plays Miami….UGA plays Buffalo. WOW! Way to go Richt no wonder you usually win 10. LOL

UGA is doing little brother Georgia Southern a favor by giving them a big payday and letting 93,000 fans watch them. Interesting that Tech so far has skipped Ga. Southern, but will play G-W and Jax State.

Playing Buffalo gives the Dogs a chance to renew the rivalry with Chan Gailey. The Bills will likely be a 3 point favorite.

Take a look at the Florida Gator’s schedule over the last ten years. They open with two cream puffs, followed by another one or two during the season. Does their soft schedule hurt them. NO! Any player who is suspended sits out the first two games, ready too play for the big games. Do they have a game West of the Mississippi. NO!

I can only assume that the folks complaining about Georgia’s schedule are 12 year-olds or someone who has lost their memory. Richt winning 10 games only because he schedules cake teams? Hello. We play in the SEC, schedule the reining ACC Champ every year (sure its a weak Conference) and have scheduled plenty of tough non-conference teams through the years. Think Oklahoma State, Arizona State. Even Colorado was an upper-level Big 12 team when we scheduled them. So we play Buffalo in 2012, many teams schedule a team that they can get to come play in your stadium without a HOME-AWAY series. And considering we are not scheduling GA Southern every year but once in a 4 year cycle, what’s your beef?

Bama Dawg

We play GA Southern every so often to benefit their program, which is good for the state of Georgia. There are a lot of ties there (i.e., Erk Russell) just like there are a lot go ties between UGA and Auburn. If GA State is good enough for Alabama to play, why not give them a shot every now and then. We all know that we aren’t going to schedule an intersectional rival with the SEC schedule we have. May not like it, but that’s the way it is.

I might be the only person in the universe who cheers for both Georgia and Buffalo (obviously not equally), but the Bulls will be a nice match up. Remember, they won the MAC in 2008. It’s not like we picked them to avoid playing UNC or anything. Plus, we play at Louisville that year anyway (a game we scheduled before they tanked, by the way).

As a Georgia grad and Georgia State law student, I’d love to see us play the Panthers. I feel like they definitely need a few years to get established though before that happens.

There is a lot more to think about in this scheduling process besides how tough the competition will be. With that said UGA should not be playing Buffalo. Find a southern school with some players from Georgia to pay the $975K too. That would at least make it interesting for the fans.

I know UGA is just doing what everybody else does, but I hate this aspect of college football. Why schedule teams that have less then a 1% chance of beating you. You might as well take the week off and rest because half the team isnt even going to play in the second half. Its a complete waste of time.

GT Fans are you seriously bitching about our scheduling? What a bunch of dumb smart people. South Carolina State this year, Jacksonville State in 2008 and 2009, Samford in 2006 and 2007, Troy in 2006, etc. Get real.

Georgia’s opening games…2010 UL-F, 2009 #9 ranked Oklahoma St., 2008 GSU, 2007 OSU… No comparison you morons. Look at most of the big time DI football teams, they all have cupcakes in the first game. Most have them in the first two games. At least UGA has the nuts to go out and play somebody that actually has a shot as beating us.

http://www.collegelunchboxes.com I know on the surface it looks like the Dawgs are taking the easy way out but when you consider their SEC schedule and at least one of the four nonconference is GT you need a brake from the tough grind. This year they travel to Boulder they may not be a beast this year but when they signed the home and home agreement they very well could have been. I don’t blame them at all for booking a cupcake twice a year. How come nobody gets on the Gators for their patsy lineup?

The Dawgs ain’t the only ones scheduling these easy games. Do we really need to look at Floridas out of con. Schedule from last year, or Bama’s this year? Tech plays Jax state every year and LSU plays Tulane. The Dawgs just got a lot of big mouth haters with selective memories.

Another great home schedule in the works. Geogia is really concerned about the season ticket holders. I guess we are dumb enough to pay top dollar to watch anyone play. Georgia does not understand the word COMPETITION. Lets round out the schedule with Georgia State and Presbyterian College. Oh, that’s right, TV scheduled these match ups. TV needed a high quality game those weekends. Why doesn’t Georgia just join the Southern Conference. Maybe Georgia could win at least half of the games.
