ATHENS – Georgia coach Mark Richt commented after Wednesday’s scrimmage in Sanford Stadium that Aaron Murray “could have made a better decision” on a couple of occasions.
One such occasion sprung to mind for Murray: “a screen where I should have just thrown it out of bounds and instead I tried to scramble and got sacked.”
The education of Georgia’s starting quarterback continues.
“He’s still learning. He’s still a freshman,” Richt said. “It wasn’t really bad, but there were a couple of times where he could have made a better decision. I’m just thankful we got into those situations and it happened today. Hopefully, the point will be driven home a little bit better because it was more of a real situation. Hopefully, he’ll learn from it.”
Richt went to some lengths to make the closed-to-the-media scrimmage as real as possible –- a pregame coin toss, SEC officials, etc. –- and Murray admitted he “had a little jitters” beforehand.
“Whenever you go into Sanford Stadium,” he said, “your jitters are going to be running a little more than when you’re just out on the practice field.”
Even if, as he noted, there are “93,000 less [people in the stands] than there’s going to be in a week and a half.”
Murray felt he shook off the jitters and made progress as he and team inched closer to the Sept. 4 season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.
“The main thing is . . . I’m feeling more comfortable,” Murray said. “I feel like I definitely took a little step forward today.
“I feel like I’m making my reads better. I know where I’m going with the ball. … I feel like my knowledge is getting better. I just got to make the throws and the right plays.”
He completed 9 of 17 passes for 127 yards and one touchdown (to A.J. Green) in one half of action against basically Georgia’s scout team. He threw no interceptions.
Georgia’s offense continued to work without two starting linemen, center Ben Jones (knee) and left guard Cordy Glenn (mono). Both are expected back next week.
+++++++++
Richt said the scrimmage produced no “earth-shattering” developments that will alter the depth chart. It did reveal where the assistant coaches will be stationed on game days.
Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and defensive line coach Rodney Garner will be at field level, while inside linebackers coach Warren Belin and secondary coach Scott Lakatos will be upstairs in the coaches’ box. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who moved from the box to the sideline midway through last season, will remain on the field, as will offensive line coach Stacy Searels and running backs coach Bryan McClendon. Receivers coach Tony Ball and tight ends coach John Lilly will be in the box.

My gut tells me we’re in a little trouble. Not having a QB with 2-3 years in the system ready to go is Richt’s fault. I think Murray has some talent and some room to grow, but we are 3 weeks away from a Carolina team with some talent, and a seasoned SEC QB with a pretty good defense, not our scout team. This team has some strengths, but a lot of questions. We’ll know everything we need to know after SC and Arkansas.

Who is the simpleton posting as Reshad Jones? I know the real Reshad Jones turned out to be very overrated, but surely can’t be that jealous of A.J. to come on here with stupid remarks like that. As far as Richt goes, he better hope that Murray plays very well for UGA this year. JB above post is dead on, there is no excuse for Richt not to have a quarterback with some time on the field after being at Georgia for ten years. Richt may think he will get an 8-4 pass like his first season with Greene, but I can tell you the money people at UGA say different. Richt seemed to have put all of his eggs in Stafford’s basket as his biggest recruit of his career, but Stafford was far from being what he was talked up to be, mainly because of what he lacks between the ears. (He has not shown that he has gained any gray matter since going to Detroit). He threw more interceptions than any QB at UGA since Greg Talley was there. On the other hand, I remember all of the grumbling about D.J. before the 2005 season as well, and he turned out to be very good. If not injured for the UF game, we win that one, and the embarrassing losses that year were, Richt’s fault as well for ever naming that moron WM as our DC. Bottom line is Richt is expected to excell by the people pouring money into the atheletic department, and Richt is also the highest paid coach to ever coach at UGA. One day he comes out saying that he thinks we have a pretty good team, and the next day it sounds as if he’s not so sure. He had better hope that he is pulling a Dooley by not wanting the competition to really know that his team is loaded, because contrary to what Damon Evans said, he very much belongs on that hot seat list that Mr. College Football has on his blog from what I have heard from some very large money contributors.

Murray had 2 overthrows, and got sacked when a screen play broke down. Those were his only 3 mistakes in 2 quarters of football. Not perfect, but even if uncorrected, we can live with those kind of mistakes. What we don’t need, is Murray throwing interceptions like Cox did every 20 passes. Every 2 games, an interception is acceptable, but not every 20 passes like Cox. Murray threw no intercpetions yesterday. He showed good judgment in that area, and that’s the most important stat for him right now as a young QB.
Murray threw a td and passed for 127 yards in just 2 quarters, which would finish with 24 td’s, O int’s, and 3000 yards after the regular season over 12 games, which would be terrific.
Anyone complaining about Murray’s performance yesterday on this blog, is likely a competitor, acting like a Georgia fan.

Murray didn’t have 5 of his Offensive Lineman, these were all backups. If he did, his stats would have been around 60% accuracy instead of 52%, like this Spring’s 60% accuracy for Murray over the 3 scrimmages, and Murray probably wouldn’t have got sacked.

Murray got jitters, that’s expected. He handled them pretty well, threw a couple of passes to a safe area, where either our guy catches it, or it’s an incompletion. He had a bunch more overthrows than 2 on G-Day, and he threw an interception on G-Day and had 0 Td’s, so he’s getting better in all 3 areas.

Richt’s not letting Murray throw to TE’s yet, that will take the pressure off in a real game, as LB’s can’t cover Georgia’s TE’s.
Murray’s throwing to receivers onyl right now, because that’s where he needs the most work. But he’ll be hitting TE’s and RB’s in the games, and his results will be better.

What everyone is missing is Murry is in a non-contact jersey
He has been here a year and knows everyone and the plays so its not like he is green and worried about what his teammates think of him or doesnt know where the play is going
My point is he should have a better completion rate than 9-17, 8-20, 10-22 when not having to worry about a hostile crowd or getting his head knocked off
are we having a problem teaching the QB position like, tackling under Willie the Great.
Can he not see the players, have him drop back more but something has to change because your not going to tote the rock in this league and hope to pull it out with a new defensive scheme coming in

Bottom line is who is coaching these kids at QB up. Bobo sucks!!! Bobo can’t call plays!!! They would do Murray so much good to give him a good slant pkg (5 yrds, 10 yrds, 15 yrds.. etc) and not just keep this kid in the pocket to get killed. They also should just wear out the tide end down the middle. Orson Charles reminds me so much of Randy McMichael. How about running a draw play from a 3 or 4 receiver set once in awhile (you never did that last year). Be just a little more f”n creative than the silly pop warner you are Boblo.

Columbus Dawg, Stafford is doing just fine in Detroit. For being in Detroit he had pretty good rookie year with the supporting cast he had. Just as good a year or better than the great Sanchez in NY.
How much starting time did McElroy have for Bama before he started last year? I don’t recall very much maybe a Bama fan can tell us. Thing is McElroy had a lot of experience around him and he handled the situation great. Murray will be asked to managed the games and not lose them and hopefully grow as the season goes on. Some of you people are so negative. Why would anyone think we can’t beat SC & AR? We suppose to beat those teams. The reason why we had a subpar season last yr is because we had bad coaching and poor execution on offense. I still believe Bobo will call inadequate plays but Aaron Murray is no Joe Cox. Once he gets comfortable in games he will flourish in that offense. Aaron knows how to execute plays and get himself out of trouble when the offense breaks down. He’s a very smart young man.
Todd Grantham is no WM. He knows how to coach defense. I just got a good feeling about his coaching style. I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t go undefeated this season. The only team that could give us trouble is Al but we won’t play them unless we play for the SEC Title in Atlanta.

Tony, disagree, last year’s ills wern’t because of coaching, or poor execution on offense. Thse coaches got Georgia to a #2 finish in 2007. The offense was productive, Cox threw 25 touchdowns for over 2500 yards, and the RB’s led the SEC in rushing over the last 5 games.
The problems were due to poor strategy (too much passing, underutilizing playmakers/overotation of mediocre players, reactive pass defense).

The problem with Okl St, Tenn, Fla and Lsu, was strategy, not coaching or offensive execution. Bobo went in there expecting to win by throwing the ball, like Charlie Weiss, with a 1st year starter in Joe Cox. Dumb strategy. Then you rotate or underutilize players who are your best playmakers like Ealey, Olson, and Smith. Then Martinez didn’t move to a more proactive style of defense. All strategy, all wrong. Coaches got Georgia to #2 finish in 2007, all can coach, Cox finished with impressive passing numbers, King/Ealey finished with impressive rushing numbers once the strategy shifted to heavy rush, over last 5 games.

Hill, I don’t think our opponents will trot out their scout teams for us on Saturdays. And scout teams are not the 2nd string players. The scout team is made up of the players that are left over the “rotation” which is usually 2 or 3 deep per position.
Look, I love Murray and I’m hopeful. But like the Kiffins said, “UGA does the same thing they’ve been doing for 10 years. They are the easies team on our schedule to prepare for.”
Bobo is the reason UGA can’t move the ball nor score against the better SEC teams on our schedule.

One thing I don’t like about Georgia’s strategy is the whole rotate everybody, regardless of performance thing. That’s plain dumb. Percy Harvin got a lot of touches, so did Hernandez. Ingram gets a lot of touches. Georgia’s the only team I can think of who would limit AJ Green’s or Branden Smith’s or Charles Olson’s or Washaun Ealey’s touches to such low numbers. It’s a massive strategic mistake.

And whose fault is it for Georgia to have a true freshman about to be starting at quarterback? Last year couldn’t have been spent at least getting someone some snaps in preparation for this year, but instead UGA stuck with Joe Cox. Geez, with Joe T and Joe Cox as history, does Mark Richt have something against developing talented quarterbacks?

1- Passing too much in the first 7 games
2- Overotating mediocre players

4- Reactive defensive posture

George, you don’t what you are talking about young man. If coaching wasn’t the problem then why did they fire WM. As a matter of fact they should of replaced WM after the 2005 season. Didn’t Joe Cox throw 15 ints last yr? If I’m not mistaken I believe he threw an int in every game last season. If that’s what you expect from a qb maybe you need to stop watching football. Had Mark Richt hired himself a successful offensive coordinator in 2001 he probably would of won a national championship by now.

Coach Richt’s best seasons are where Georgia heavily uses playmakers like Moreno, Massaqia, tight ends in 2002 & 2005.

They fired Willie due to poor strategy, his read & react strategy. Bobo can coach, has great QB production, but has a tendancy to pick poor strategy too–just passes too heavily. The int’s were the result of the wrong strategy, relying too heavily on the pass with a 1st year starter. Willie can coach, as Stoops at Oklahoma grabbed him up.

Hey Red Panties Rick…what don’t you understand about not getting Murray ready last year..Had it not been for his arm injury and also you must remember he suffered a severe break in his leg his senior year, yet he still came back, probably too soon and led his team to a state championship…Please get this now: the chances were pretty darn good that Murray or possibly Mett some valuable playing time last year but it didn’t happen as has been discussed…You can make a case that Logan should have played more, and yes maybe that should have happened, but if it is not obvious to you by now, the coaching staff did not feel that Logan gave us the best chance to win…I still believe Joe Cox was our best option based on everything we know and injury to Murray last year…

Hopefully an improved D means the offense won’t have the added pressure of having to come back from behind. Not that I’m defending Cox, but last year they were always pressing because they were behind in the score. Sometimes it worked out well (see Arky) sometimes not (see FLA). Plus the D was always on the field so they were tired out by the 4th quarter. If the D can hold teams to under 17 points, we’ll have a chance in every game. The key is to get a lead and hold it.

George, Since Bobo became OC in ‘06, the QBs have tossed atleast 10 INTs a years.
Murray looked less than a amazing and tossed a terrible looking INT in the spring game.
Stafford has looked decent in the NFL maybe even good since he is at Detroit. Scouts have said he was one of the most NFL ready QBs directly out of college. So why did he struggle with INTs and could not produce clock killing drives against top teams? Maybe the plays and strategy were not in the playbook or gameplan?

Since when is strategy, i.e. “game planning” not part of coaching George? If CMR protects his young QB and allows him to come along slowly we will be OK. Great Coaches play to their strengths and protect their weaknesses. There should be very few surprises in our offensive game plan this year, especially early. We should utilize our strengths, be patient, and good things will happen.
My fear is we will see the same coaching style, poor offensive game planning, lack of patience with the running game, and CMR’s love for the big play. These things will get our young QB in trouble early and often.
If this is bashing our coaching staff so be it. That’s been a major part of our problem throughout the Richt years. If Richt were as good a coach as some of you think we would have possibly two MNC’s under our belt during his years.

“Murray should be more mature” (as a RS freshman). More mature than what? Than to not read every situation exactly right every time? Than to try to run around the end and make a play, when he should have just thrown the ball away? Every QB in the league makes those kind of mistakes from time to time. I’m not speculating about his maturity, but where in that article was that in question. Richt said he made some mistake and could have read it better, stands to learn from those so that he can improve his game. Is that not true of every film from every game on every saturday?

I think that by the end of the season Murray should be playing very well. We all have to be patient with him as he has no real live game experience. It’s crucial that we are physical and run the ball well. We cannot give up on the run game if it does not go well the first series as has happened in the past. Screens and safer passes to the tightend in my opinion would help in getting him comfortable before we ask too much too early of this kid. He does seem nervous at this point but so would I. Hopefully we get alot of turnovers and big plays from the likes of A.J., Wooten and Smith.

I can see the 1st game being more important than any of us thought. If he can come out and throw for 300 yards with2 td’s and no picks, it could do him a world of good confidence wise.

Part of coaching is coaching players to their strengths. In basketball, if you have a big team, you get the ball in the post.

Lex, I don’t have the answer to that. CMR’s coaching philosophy is basically different than mine would be. Don’t get me wrong, I love a big play, but I like the “ball control” style of offense. I just think over the long term it works better. I like seeing their defense worn out midway through the 3rd quarter.
Like I said yesterday in a post, you game plan depending on who your opponent is. Limit your mistakes, let the other guys beat themselves if they will.
It’s not my job, nor will you ever see me post anything close to “fire the coach” . I do believe that McGarity will be more hands on than Evans was when he’s sees the obvious problems we have dealt with the last few years. Long term I think that may be good for Richt, and us.

Stafford has a couple of more weapons at WR this year and some help at the running game. He has looked pretty dang good in the preseason. Here’s to hoping that the Lions can win 4 games this year.
Gatorbait, I don’t expect Murray to set the world on fire this year. He will win some games for us as well probably lose some games with rookie mistakes. My point is that McElroy didn’t have a lot of game time until last year and he adjusted well. I wasn’t sure how long McElroy had been at Bama that’s why I asked the question. Regarding Brantley I guess we will all see how he does under the gun. Even Stafford and Tebow had rough rookies seasons in the SEC.

Lex, me thinks CMR is a pro style guy and we will never have to worry about the spread as our foundation offense. I think with AJ, Logan, and Brandon we will employ the wildcat on numerous occasions, or at least we should, that could resemble some spread philosophy. That will also help our young QB stay out of trouble.
I don’t really have a preference as to the formation, as long as it fits the personnel.

Murray’s real education will start Sept. 11 in Columbia. Stafford did not reach his full potential as a QB at UGA mostly because of that moron Bobo, and I doubt Murray will live up to expectations either, for the same reason. Stafford went pro early because of the money, but I bet a lesser reason was: why should he hang around a dunce like Bobo for another year and waste it? If things don’t pan out any better then last year, I will be interested to see if Richt dumps Bozo over the side like he did Willie. Although Richt did need to make a change, Willie was not the sole cause of last season’s troubles.

I watched the Florida game last night. The score was 31-17 with 9 minutes to go. It ended 41-17 because of Cox throwing a pick and Gray throwing a pick 6 in the last 9 minutes of the game. Before that, cox threw 2 more picks.
The d actually held its own in the 2nd half.

Don’t share the concerns most UGA fans have about SC and AK. My thinking is the problems experienced during ‘08 & ‘09 were not related to lack of player talent but more related to areas of coaching;(or lack of) game preparation, strategy, mid game adjustments, players attitude & etc. Know coachs don’t throw, catch, block, tackle or run the ball during a game, but they are responsible for preparation. Hopefully that has been positively addressed. We’ll know soon.

We can’t look anymore lost on defense or as inept on offense as we have playing Florida the past couple of seasons. The coaches had no answer to the onslaught of Florida’s attack on both sides of the ball. Hopefully we are going to be more reactive and create confusion on defense instead of the laid back schemes that consistently failed us last year. Sure Murray is a question mark but hopefully he will grow into a capable leader. By game 4 you begin to get an idea of what we have. By game 7 we are pretty much what we are.

Here’s the answer to your question about what happens if Brantley gets hurt.
Meet Mr. Burton, he came in as a 3 star QB and the Florida coaches think they have really found prize recruit.
Trey Burton came to Florida as a quarterback, and while the day may come where that is his only position, right now the Gators are putting him here, there and everywhere.
And the reason for that is simple.
“He’s very versatile,” Florida offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Steve Addazio said.
Translation: Burton is a football player.
Right now, that means not only playing quarterback, where he probably is the Gators’ No. 1 “Wildcat” option, but also tight end, where Florida may utilize his sturdy and powerful 6-foot-2, 222-pound frame.
“Trey Burton is having a great week,” Addazio said. “He makes plays at a lot of different spots.” “He’s a great kid,” tight ends/fullbacks coach Brian White added
“He’s smart, athletic, tough.”And …”He’s a really unselfish guy,”
White said. “He’s a fun guy to be around.”
Oh, BTW he will run the Tebow package, 3rd and short.

Georgia will be fine and Murray will be solid. Everybody stop crying about South Carolina and Arkansas beating Georgia. South Carolina has bigger problems “like at tight end.” No way will Todd Grantham let Arkansas put up 40 plus points. We have two of the best running backs in football. We will keep all these spread offenses frustrated on the sidelines. Murray doesnt have to be a star. We have plenty of play makers. McElroy is not a good QB. I don’t care what anybody says. 1. Have our best athletes on the field, not necessarily those with most senority.
