The education of Georgia’s starting quarterback continues

ATHENS – Georgia coach Mark Richt commented after Wednesday’s scrimmage in Sanford Stadium that Aaron Murray “could have made a better decision” on a couple of occasions.

One such occasion sprung to mind for Murray: “a screen where I should have just thrown it out of bounds and instead I tried to scramble and got sacked.”

The education of Georgia’s starting quarterback continues.

“He’s still learning. He’s still a freshman,” Richt said. “It wasn’t really bad, but there were a couple of times where he could have made a better decision. I’m just thankful we got into those situations and it happened today. Hopefully, the point will be driven home a little bit better because it was more of a real situation. Hopefully, he’ll learn from it.”

Richt went to some lengths to make the closed-to-the-media scrimmage as real as possible –- a pregame coin toss, SEC officials, etc. –- and Murray admitted he “had a little jitters” beforehand.

“Whenever you go into Sanford Stadium,” he said, “your jitters are going to be running a little more than when you’re just out on the practice field.”

Even if, as he noted, there are “93,000 less [people in the stands] than there’s going to be in a week and a half.”

Murray felt he shook off the jitters and made progress as he and team inched closer to the Sept. 4 season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.

“The main thing is . . . I’m feeling more comfortable,” Murray said. “I feel like I definitely took a little step forward today.

“I feel like I’m making my reads better. I know where I’m going with the ball. … I feel like my knowledge is getting better. I just got to make the throws and the right plays.”

He completed 9 of 17 passes for 127 yards and one touchdown (to A.J. Green) in one half of action against basically Georgia’s scout team. He threw no interceptions.

Georgia’s offense continued to work without two starting linemen, center Ben Jones (knee) and left guard Cordy Glenn (mono). Both are expected back next week.

+++++++++

Richt said the scrimmage produced no “earth-shattering” developments that will alter the depth chart. It did reveal where the assistant coaches will be stationed on game days.

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and defensive line coach Rodney Garner will be at field level, while inside linebackers coach Warren Belin and secondary coach Scott Lakatos will be upstairs in the coaches’ box. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who moved from the box to the sideline midway through last season, will remain on the field, as will offensive line coach Stacy Searels and running backs coach Bryan McClendon. Receivers coach Tony Ball and tight ends coach John Lilly will be in the box.

Aaron Murray = Joe Cox II

It’s going to be another looooong season.

How much longer are we going to put up with Richt. We can do so much better.

Also, the Dawgs need to control the clock, (running)
and field position (kicking). Field goals will be real
important in close games.

It’s not necessarily the percentage of the time you run, it’s when you choose to run that would determine it’s effectiveness. I can be specific, 2005, midway through the 4th quarter, you’re leading, and you throw 3 and out. Numerous other examples come to mind.

I heard richt has uga scientists working on special “platform cleats” so little murray can see over the line of scrimmage. It could be the difference. Richt—always thinking ahead.

blah blah nostradamus,

I won’t bother watching now since I know the outcome.

2008 it was 14-7
2007 it was 16-12
2006 it was 18-0
2005 it was 15-13

2009 was the exception with all the points scored and now willie is gone.

Since you are obviously smarter than all of us, I won’t bother watching or trying to have a civil discussion. I will just bow down to your intellect.

Interesting Year Ahead

I expect many aspects of the team to be truly offensive this year. The play calling, the QB play and the OL play. Even the D that everyone is figuring to be a 180 from last year will probably be offensive. Mediocrity doesn’t turn around in one year, I don’t care who’s coaching. On the bright side, I expect the running and kicking games to be pretty good. And the receivers should do well if someone can deliver the ball to them and they can hold on to it.

I can’t wait until the season starts so we will have something intelligent to discuss, if that is possible on here. Things like actual performances that we can analyze.

I do need some help. For my UFL fanatsy team I have Shockley at QB. For my RB do I go with Maurice Clarrett or Johnny Dwyer? Any input would be appreciated.

Dangerous, don’t know where your post came from about me “rewarding mediocrity”, but that has nothing to do with what my posts were regarding…My point is don’t make so much out of statistics from a controlled scrimmage game, where you are working on different things and personnel packages….If you want to bring up the statistics after a few real situaltional games then thats fine…let the statistics speak for themselves,,most importantly is due they translate into wins…And just what the heck does Saban and Applewhite have to do with anything in that i posted regarding Murray’s scrimmage statistics or our QB situation this year and Murray’s injury last year which probably kept him from playing as a freshman….Maybe you misread my post…try again, thank you…

Lex, me thinks CMR is a pro style guy and we will never have to worry about the spread as our foundation offense. I think with AJ, Logan, and Brandon we will employ the wildcat on numerous occasions, or at least we should, that could resemble some spread philosophy. That will also help our young QB stay out of trouble.

I don’t really have a preference as to the formation, as long as it fits the personnel.

Murray’s real education will start Sept. 11 in Columbia. Stafford did not reach his full potential as a QB at UGA mostly because of that moron Bobo, and I doubt Murray will live up to expectations either, for the same reason. Stafford went pro early because of the money, but I bet a lesser reason was: why should he hang around a dunce like Bobo for another year and waste it? If things don’t pan out any better then last year, I will be interested to see if Richt dumps Bozo over the side like he did Willie. Although Richt did need to make a change, Willie was not the sole cause of last season’s troubles.

SEC defenses are going stack the line and force him to throw the ball. Freshman will be freshman. He’s going to have to have a good season for UGA to win some games. Everyone and their brother will be focusing in on stopping the running attack. He’s going to have to eventually step up and do some things out there. I hope you guys have a good year until you meet us in November.

good point furman.

I watched the Florida game last night. The score was 31-17 with 9 minutes to go. It ended 41-17 because of Cox throwing a pick and Gray throwing a pick 6 in the last 9 minutes of the game. Before that, cox threw 2 more picks.

The d actually held its own in the 2nd half.

I still don’t believe WM was the answer but you are right, it wasn’t all his fault in some of the games.
