Loran Smith replaced as UGA sideline reporter

(Updated 8 p.m.)

ATHENS — After 36 years as sideline reporter on radio broadcasts of University of Georgia football games, Loran Smith will not be in that role this season.

He’ll be replaced by Chuck Dowdle, the former WSB-TV sports director.

Smith will continue in his other long-time role as co-host, with Neil Williamson, of Georgia’s three-hour radio pregame show, the “Tailgate Show.”

Georgia associate athletic director Alan Thomas said the change of sideline reporters had been “contemplated” since the 2008 retirement of legendary play-by-play voice Larry Munson altered the “dynamics” of the broadcast.

“I had 36 good years on the sideline,” Smith told the AJC Thursday night. “It’s been fun, and I appreciate the support of the Georgia people.

“I had a good time, and I look forward to more good times. I don’t have to be on the sidelines to enjoy the broadcast and my role.

“I finally get to sit up in the press box where I can see,” Smith added with a laugh.

Smith said he joined UGA’s radio broadcast team in the early 1970s and has served as sideline reporter continuously since 1974. Munson’s hand-off call to Smith became a familiar and enduring part of UGA lore.

Munson’s exact words varied from time to time, Smith said.  “‘Whaddaya got, Loran?’ That’s how it started, and I think it became interchangeable,” Smith said. “I think  just whatever came to mind. He might have started with my name or might have concluded with it.”

Smith, 72,  said he leaves the sideline with “a lot of good memories” and confidence many more are yet to be made under coach Mark Richt’s leadership.

“I’m just looking forward to the future,” Smith said.

Thomas said Smith remains an important part of the broadcast team on the pregame show. Having Dowdle serve as sideline reporter is “a natural progression” of his role on the post-game locker-room show, Thomas said.

In another change to the radio lineup, veteran SEC broadcaster Charlie McAlexander will join Jeff Dantzler on the “Bulldog Game Day” show, which airs one hour before the “Tailgate Show.”

For sentimental reasons I would never have called for either Larry’s or Loran’s job. But like Larry, Loran lost his groove a long time ago. In my opinion Loran was always there more for tradition than knowledge and talent on the sidelines. Once Larry stepped down the charm was gone. Love ‘em both. But I look forward to the new energy and insight.

Although we appreciate Chuck Dowdle, Loran is very special; a true Southern Gentleman with class. We love hearing his gentle cadence and value his long history with UGA. In our opinion, he should be kept there until his health says otherwise.

As for Loran, I agreee with Mr. Dawg. He was there for tradition purposes only. Didn’t add a lot.

Loran Smith hasn’t uttered anything relevant for 15 years. Hopefully Dowdle will find something of interest to report on. If not I’d rather listen to a student give updates from the student section during games. It would be more interesting than what we’ve heard from Smith for all these years.

I tend to judge people in the spotlight based on how they treat children. Mr. Dowdle was my first experience with this. I met him when I was probably 8 years old at a tennis tournament. Probably one of the worst voices in any medium. Always sounded like he was coming out of a coma. Add to that a lack of substance and it was some of the worst tv/radio in the business. The ONLY reason he was around was because Larry kept him for sentimental reasons. Otherwise there’s no way any athletic department would have hired him, much less kept him around for any length of time.

UGA has had for a number of years a very capable goodwill ambassador in Loren Smith. He goes throughout the state and represents the university in a number of ways-speeches, writings, visits to the Bulldog club chapters, etc.

Loren has always been acommodating local people all over the state, whether acknowledging a funeral for one of the bulldog faithful, or writing a piece for the local newspaper about a favorite son or daughter that is in Athens participating in the programs.

Thanks Loren for all you have done-look forward to hearing your tailgate show.

I miss Larry and I will miss Loren. A nice gentleman and a great ambassador for UGA. I think this means we are all gettting old. lol
I would like to post a letter by the late great Coach Russell if I may.
I hope this brings back great memories and inspires you as much as it does me.

Gentleman: (and Lineman)
The football season of ‘80 will be my seventeenth as a Georgia Bulldog.
During this time there have been many thrilling Saturdays of competition, each with it’s indivdual memories, because each game has it’s own personality.
There are two Saturday traditions and experiences which have remained basically the same throughout the years for me and I would like to share them with you.
The first one concerns THE RAILROAD TRACK CROWD. These are my people because they love the “Dogs almost as much as I do. Oh, I know they do some crazy things-liek turn over our opponet’s busses sometims and now and then they throw one another down the bank and into the street below. But they stamp out Kuczu and they pull for us to win and that ain’t bad.
If you can get off the bus to the cheers of THE RAILROAD TRACK CROWD and walk down those steps to the dressing room and not be inspired to play football as best you possibly can, something important is missing beneath the Georgia jersey you wear. It is impossible not to be inspired. They choke me up!
The season of 1980 will be the last for the RAILROAD TRACK CROWD. A great Georgia tradition will have passed with the new addition to our stadium. The view from the track will be no more.
Your team will the last Georgia Team to be greeted and cheered by

THE RAILROAD TRACK CROWD. Wouldn’t it be fitting if their last team was also the best Georgia Team ever. Think about it!
Another Saturday tradition which has mean so much to me over the years can be stated very simply: “THERE AIN’T NOTHIGN LIKE BEING A BULLDOG ON STURDAY NIGHT—–AFTER WINNING A FOOTBALL GAME”. I mean like whipping Tennessee’s a** to start with, then ten more and then another one.

This is the Game plan. We have no alternate plan.

Sincerely,

You know you really hate to lose a tradition, but we all knew it was coming. My problem is that ISP and the new company run the show, we should have control. I coule see this at the Galleria the other night with CMR…congrats to Dowdle for getting a great second retirment job at the greatest place…UGA…double dipping that salary….

I agree with Mr. Dawg and Griff at 5:02 p.m… very well said. I grew up listening to Larry and Loran with the biggest Dawg fan I know, my father. It was part of UGA football history and their voices during a tense game will be missed.

I like the addition of Chuck Dowdle… he is a true professional and one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. Talk to anyone in the business, they will tell you Chuck is genuine, kind and knowledgable. He will be a great addition to the crew.

I only have one bone to pick with the Georgia broadcasts… I loved Eric Zeier as a player, but I am NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL with him as a color analyst. He doesn’t excite me at all or get edgy at all. Please, to those in charge of the Georgia broadcasts, look at some other options for the future. Truth be told, I’d kinda like to hear ol’ Kevin Butler do color sometime… he’s not afraid to say what he really thinks. But overall, Scott Howard is good with a lot of passion… Hondo and Loran do a great job on the tailgate show… and I think Chuck does a great job with the postgame interviews.

Can’t wait for the season…. go Dawgs!!!

Oh and I agree with jdawgs @ 6:36 p.m….. giving ISP control of UGA broadcasts was IDIOTIC. ISP is TERRIBLE. They do Ga. Tech games… ’nuff said.

Georgia sports broadcasting is a valuable commodity and should be treated as such, not just “another college program.” UGA should have ULTIMATE editorial, talent and content control.

To Georgia: FIRE ISP! Take control of the broadcasts. They already sound like other schools’ broadcasts with their lame, generic bump music… they are OUR games and OUR broadcasts… Glory Glory to ‘Ol Georgia!!!

This is actually a pretty fair arrangement. We get the benefit of Loran’s historical knowledge on the pre-game and perhaps a more active observer on the sideline. I’ve been a Dawg fan and listener for about 40 years, so I’ll miss Loran, and I believe he had unusual access to coaches and players because of his history, knowledge and connections, but he’s not the value add that he once was. I’ll go a bit further and observe that I prefer his written words to his spoken words. Sometimes we got more than we really needed from the sideline. I remember one broadcast from, I think, the late 70’s, in which Larry impatiently cut Loran off to get back to the game–one of Larry’s great strengths was his focus on the action–and when Larry went back to the sideline for Loran, there was silence! A rare moment of discord, and perhaps an example that even Larry found Loran too wordy at times.

They say some people have a face for radio. Loran has a voice for the newspaper. He sounds like Gomer Pyle and is guilty as charged of so many meaningless comments and silly questions so I wondered how he got and kept his job… then I found out he was the producer. All that said, you won’t find a more dedicated Dawg fan.

Someone new at his position is probably a good move… and Loran will still have 3 hours prior to games to continue his “tradition.”

I would bet that Donan and Loran never had a beer together. Loran was a UGA legend, but his time had come. DGD, for sure!! Personally, had rather listen to most network announcers on tv, than those doing UGA games on radio. Need more Kevin Butlers, who doesn’t “sugar coat” the situations.

Really Don? 4 is more than 3? Thanks for clearing that up for me…

Rabun Dog, You would lose a bet on Loran never having a beer with Donnan. I don’t know if he knows Donan. There was never a Coach Donan at UGA. If you don’t even know the UGA coaches, I can see why you need a numb-nut TV announcer to help you and your wife through a football game. You certainly haven’t been spending your time in Athens on Saturdays. Donan? Donan? Please go to a deer hunting site and never voice an opinion about UGA again! Donan?

Larry was a destructive force to UGA (the university). To boot, he was senile & incompetent for at least the last lustrum.

Loran has rarely added anything outside of the glaringly obvious in several years. Dantzler has a great voice, and more knowledge of UGA athletics than anyone not named Dan Magill. He needs a more prominent role, and if he can stay out of trouble with the DUI police, I think he’ll eventually get one. Dowdle is the worst possible choice. He sounds as though he’s been sucking helium and is, in person, the most condescending, arrogant media personality I’ve ever met outside of Wolf Blitzer.

I still miss Munson but won’t miss Loran. I’ve been listening to and attending games for over thirty years and still haven’t figured out what Loran was talking about. “Loran, Whatayagot?” was a apparently a trick question for Loran because he always came back with nothing of substance.

“Well Larry, I had lunch on Tuesday with Miss Allebelle Jones who some of you may remember was the sister of Jerome Jones whose high school backfield mate was George Jernigan, a four year lettermen for the Dawgs, who pulled a groin in the locker room after Georgia’s 1946 Oil Bowl victory over Tulsa. Tulsa, that reminds me of a story…”

I’m all for tradition (including no black uniforms or helmets) but is it really tradition if only two people know it happened or is it just history? Someone asked me on Wednesday if Loran was going to be back this year and I said that I hoped not and wanted them to give Butler a shot. But Chuck Dowdle? Haven’t the ISP guys seen the coach’s show or any of his other work? Scott Howard is pretty good and Zeier isn’t as bad since they turned his microphone down or he took it out of his mouth. Go Dawgs!

Loran will be missed but in a way only he could summarize:
“Loran, how’s it going to be working in the press box?
Well, the press box has seats and it won’t be grassy like the field. Back to you”

It will let him contemplate more wonderful thoughts such as “The team that scores the most has the best chance to win” and “he looks ready to come back in the second half after a warm up (the player being spoken of was on the sideline on crutches in street clothes).” Those are just two of the most useless quotes of his I can remember. Not once can I remember him adding anything constructive to any broadcast. Nice or not, he was a waste of airtime, like I would be if I were a sideline reporter.

Our play by play crew of Scott and Eric has to be the WORST in history. Hell, I had just assume liten to the TV guys.

Loren, awful announcer, but NOBODY loves the Dogs more than him (well, maybe Dan McGill).

Our crew is becoming more and more generic. Wasn’t Dowdlw diong Tech just a few years ago. Huge step up for him.

At least Larry and Loren had some personality.

Oh yeah, I like Hondo okay – nice guy (for a Yankee) in person too.

I am a long-time a dawg fan (since the mid 60’s) but count me as one who never cared for Loran at all. His high-pitched whiny voice and lack of polish had no place on a broadcast with one of the legendary voices of the game, Larry Munson. I do give him credit for his frequent humble admittance to his lack of talent. I always assumed he got his job by being friends with influential people in the athletic program and I think he pretty much admits that. That being said, I still respect him as a “dam good dawg”

To those of you who have said such unkind things about Loran, for shame. I hope you don’t call yourself a true Bulldog fan! As another poster said, “I would guess the people that don’t like hearing Loran really don’t have UGA in there [sic] blood and are relatively new dog fans. Bulldog traditions just were not handed down to them from their parents and grandparents.” Larry and Loran were THE voices of the Bulldog nation, and this is the end of an era. Loran Smith is one of the nicest, classiest gentlemen you will ever meet, and I am ashamed to see the disparaging remarks here from fair-weather fans who obviously have no loyalty or respect for tradition, and probably never even went to UGA at that. As another poster said, what’s next? Cutting the damn hedges?
