King likely to start over Ealey at TB, Gamble over Washington at OLB

ATHENS — Caleb King, who started Georgia’s final five games last season at tailback, likely will do the same in the Sept. 4 opener against Louisiana-Lafayette. But Washaun Ealey will get extensive playing time, too, just as he did late last season.

That was the word Thursday night from running backs coach Bryan McClendon.

“Right now, it’s probably Caleb [as the starter] because he has been more consistent in his pass-blocking throughout camp,” said McClendon, who added that he expects King and Ealey to “share playing time and split series and things like that.”

“It’s a constant competition between those two guys, and they have embraced that to this point,” McClendon said. “But Caleb does sort of get the lean right now just because of his pass protection and his ability to do it and sustain it.”

Last season, King had 594 yards rushing on 114 carries (5.2 yards per carry), while Ealey had 717 yards on 125 carries (5.7 yards per carry).

Darryl Gamble’s strong preseason has earned him a starting nod at one of the outside linebacker positions, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said Thursday night. Gamble entered preseason behind Cornelius Washington on the depth chart.

“In base [defense], he’ll be out there,” Grantham said of Gamble. “Those guys are all going to play. We’re going to roll those guys. But he’ll be out there.”

Grantham expressed no dissatisfaction with Washington.

“Actually, Cornelius has done fine,” Grantham said. “He’s going to be in our rotation. Our first three games are at noon, and I think it’s important to keep guys fresh.

“I just think to be fair to everybody . . . when guys make plays and produce, you reward them.”

Coaches and players frequently have cited Gamble for productive performances in practices and scrimmages this month. Gamble, a senior, shifted from inside linebacker to outside in the final week of spring practice.

+++++++++

The combination of Hutson Mason’s progress and Logan Gray’s ankle injury have established Mason, a freshman from Marietta, as “pretty much No. 2 right now” in the quarterback pecking order, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said Thursday night.

“He’s No. 2; he’s one play away [from playing in a game],” Bobo said of Mason. “If there was an injury, he’d be in the game.”

Gray has missed the past 11 practices with a sprained ankle, Bobo noted. Before the injury, Gray was working exclusively at wide receiver, but coaches had reserved the option of returning him to quarterback in the event of an injury to starter Aaron Murray.

The tailback starter for each game after the first should be the one who has the best yards per carry from the last game.On the defense side, we need to rotate two at each position for the first three games.Heat and let’s see who will produce in the new 3-4 defense.

King over Ealey? Sounds like the same stupidity that got Martinez fired as DC last year…playing older players (B.Evans) over younger players (B.Rambo) when it’s obvious that Ealey is the better RB. Why does pass protection make King #1 when we’re going to be running it more? I guess we’ll see who gets more carries.

Coaches score running backs on a lot more than yards per carry. I trust them to coach up our backs and make playing time decisions. Read the article. Caleb is providing better protection, which might give a QB an extra split second to make a play.

Good to see King get the starting job, he and Ealey ran ALL OVER tech, destroying them to the tune of 339 rushing yards and a 30-24 victory by the Dawgs over the best the ACC had to offer.

I really like the way both sides of the ball are approaching things. I agree that Ealey might be the more explosive of the two backs, but King is not scared to put it in there with the QB protection. A good running game will do wonders for our young QB, but his pass protection won’t hurt. Also I like seeing Robinson’s named mixed in to some plays at LB, he had a couple of good games last year particularly against A&M. 8 Days, GO DAWGS!!!

Ealey is a great runner, King more of an all around back. Given experience and his own abilities I believe King won the job. I don’t think for a minute it was simply given to him because he was older. Both will play a lot and be very productive.

We start with the season with a QB who has never taken a snap in a college game. We need to build up his confidence right away, so the Dawgs want to minimize the number of times Murray gets sacked. That’s why the tailback who can block the best (Caleb King) is getting the start. Ealey will still get lots of playing time.

At first, I didn’t like reading that King would start because I believe Ealey is the better tailback who can scare opposing defenses. But, if opponents are already likely likely to stuff the box and make Murray throw while trying to shake him up, having King start makes sense.

So King fumbles the ball more than Ealey and he starts. There is a reason this offensive coaching staff is poorly regarded.

King looked like a stiff much of the time last year. Ealey is clearly the better runner and is more
physical. I dont get it. However, I do defer to the guys that are professionals and are at practice
everyday. Then again… Richt did admit he made a mistake not playing Moreno earlier. WHY did he not
play him earlier????? Because Brown, Ware or Lumpkin were better at picking up the blitz…

Absolutely insane. It was simple.Go get Cameron Newton. Let him win you two SEC titles, and play Murray as a seasoned Redshirt Junior( like John Brantley at Florida). Richt and Bobo had every chance to create this scenario, and chose to ignore the opportunity and now the kid’s starting for Auburn. He was the National Juco player of the year and is from Atlanta Westlake. What is wrong with your coaches. Richt was blowing more smoke today about your offensive line and fullbacks. How are Ben Jones, Chris davis, Clint boling and Shaun chapas going to help you in the red zone. You would think Richt was talking about Makeith Pouncey for Gosh sakes. And another thing, with all this bragging about your 3-4 and your pass rush, you don’t think other teams are going to get after Murray, knowing he broke his leg as a senior in high school, and a kid from Lassiter High School is backing him up. Richt and Bobo are simply trying to buy three more yearrs on the gravy train with this young, inexperienced quarterback stuff, and it could have been avoided. They’re ripping you off UGA fans, and they know you’ll put up with it. Every year up there it’s some crazy damn issue either off the field or on it. Richt is spending too much time on a flotation device at the lake house. The guy is semi-retired! Roll Tide. Thank you God for Nick Saban (and James Carpenter and Chance Warmack)

See how Malzahn at Auburn is handling it. Barrett Trotter, a rdshirt freshman, has moved ahead of their senior, Neil Caudle. Trotter will play a lot this year but basically will spend a couple of years behind Newton ,and then move right in after Cam heads to the NFL. The kid’s supposedly a David Greene type. auburn is developing Trotter the same way Saban brought along Greg McElroy behind John Parker Wilson, and Meyer brought along John Brantley with Tebo. People don’t realize it but Brantley played a lot last year. That’s how it’s done. You don’t start a redshirt freshman and back him up with a high schooler – not in this league. Bobo Loco Si?

Those who don’t understand the importance of a RB ability to pick-up the blitz just don’t get football. Well hell yes, Ealey is a beast totin the tater, but Caleb King’s ability not only to be productive running the ball, but also blocking is of the utmost of importance to a balanced attack. They will both get their carries, defenses will be confused thinking King is in the game to block, then drop his man and catch the ball himself out of the backfield………Question : If you were the D coordinator for South Carolina, opening series of the game, and Caleb King is the RB, how many men are you going to put in the box ?…………..Thought so ! Hell I wouldn’t have a clue either. Keep the other guy off balance, mix things up, play alot of smash-mouth football……..and by all means, keep our defense off the field, if we can execute our offense like that………….We beat the snot out of South Carolina…………University of Georgia 31 South Carolina 17……….GO DOGS !!!!!!!

Payne, I still like Bean at right Guard lined up next to Sturdivant at right tackle (to better protect his Knee). With Burnette at center , Cordy Glenn at left guard, and Josh davis at left tackle. Now you’ve got a Florida Gator type offensive line and you’re going to push some people around! You won’t even need to take a field goal kicker to Jacksonville with this front! Plus there’s a lot of technique to playing nose. You don’t just throw an inexperienced kid in there and ask him to start.because he has size. It’s not fair to Bean, the same way it wasn’t fair to Kiante Trippto move him to three different positions in the span of a year. Richt basically ruined the kid’s career.

For someone who seem to love Alabama you sure do seem to care a lot about what’s wrong with UGA. Grantham has already made a statement that the best players will play on defense he doesn’t care if the entire starting defense are all freshman. Just wait and see , it want take long now to see if Grantham is a man of his word. If he does play the best then maybe CMR will do the same on the offensive side.I also believe the best players should always be on the field. Yes they will make more mistakes but they will also make more meaningful play’s that will help UGA a lot more because they are play makers. Just realize that CMR wants team players , not a bunch of individuals that only want to show boat themselves. That means , on offense you better know how to block , I don’t care who you are.

Guys, I was just thinking, are Richt and Bobo sandbagging it with Logan Gray? the guy was a great high school Qb, is a very accurate passer and looked good in the G-day game, especially rolling out and hitting Durham with a TD pass. With all these closed practices, could he be getting more reps at Qb than Rict and Bobo are letting on . Because there is absolutely no way Hutson Mason is going to be thrown to the wolves if Murray goes down.

Jon P, you’re right.

Jim, it is a perfect example. Exactly, sir.

Right on Time, because the coaching staff on offense was as wrong about Knowshon Moreno (7th pick overall NFL Draft 1000 yards as rookie) as they were in saying Joe Tereshinski III was # 1 QB for 2006 Joe Cox # 2 for 2006 and Matthew Stafford (# 1 pick overall NFL Draft worst QB rating of all-time and that doesn’t even count his fumbles) # 3. It’s no different at the other positions too such as notably Orson Charles had 23 catches his Freshman campaign but didn’t win the Starting Job until Game 12 of the 13-game UGA year in a 14-game season because Aron White had 3 catches his Freshman Year.

Hutson Mason is # 2 QB Mike Bobo ? Duh, he is the ONLY other QB on the roster besides Aaron Murray.

Tide Rolling, they have done this EVERY YEAR. The only time they did NOT was when DJ Shockley’s Dad made Coach Richt promise him in 2001 when he redshirted DJ, that DJ would play in like the 2nd series from there on out, either that or he would have DJ move-on. 2001 to today Mike Bobo and Coach Richt have NEVER prepared our back-up like John Brantley, who is a seasoned veteran who KILLED GEORGIA, as just a for example.

Caleb King because of what Caleb King did vs Georgia tek ? Media Guide Page 73 shows Washaun Ealey 20 carries for 183 vs that HORRIBLE RUN DEFENSE of Georgia tek and by the way shows Josh Nesbitt 19 carries 1 less than Ealey for 41 yards.

Caleb King in 2006 was the # 1 football player in the state of Georgia. He has been here since 2007 and has a grand total 884 yards rushing. Out of what could have been 52 games, Caleb King has 175 rushes. That is 3 carries per game for the # 1 player in the state of Georgia since he got here. He told Ken Malcome that he finds playing tailback at UGA “a grind.” How the hell can it be a GRIND when you have averaged 3 carries per game since the day you stepped on campus here and have been the MAJOR REASON our Offense has FAILED. He feigns injury. Does NOT want to carry the ball. He is a pretty boy who does NOT do well against good run defenses and in fact, sits on the sidelines NOT PLAYING.

Washaun Ealey is The Dawgs’ Leading Rusher, not Caleb King. He has never recovered from the broken tibia. He therefore could not play football 2007, but is the # 1 football player in the state of Georgia ANYWAY. Yeah, right. Coddle his butt all you want. For his statement to Ken Malcome ALONE, he is NOT STARTING FOR ME.

1-yard rushing 2008 Florida
0-yard rushing 2008 Kentucky
0-yard rushing 2008 Auburn
1-yard rushing 2008 Georgia tek
0-yard rushing 2008 Michigan State

What happened then last year ?

Okie State, he has a hamstring and cannot play.

LSU we are playing at Home, and Caleb King decides he can play.

8-yards rushing 2009 LSU 7 carries

5 big games to date. Alabama, Florida, Georgia tek 2008. Oklahoma State 2009 and now LSU at Home 2009.

You want Caleb King’s rushing totals for those 5 games ?

The 7 yards he got against LSU doubled his total.

14.

14 yards rushing by Caleb King, in the 5 Big Games of 2008 and 2009 so far to-date in this summary of Caleb King as a Running Back at UGA.

14-yard rushing 2009 Vandie

At this point, with these 6 big games of UGA with Caleb King a grand total of 33 yards rushing.

I just skimmed the blog and didn’t see anymention of this; but does anyone remember that ga/fla game where king screwed up pass block assignments lost his job and now has been completely after those blocks then went to the coaches on how to improve? 5 yards rushing 2009 for Caleb King vs Florida

18 “RUSHES” for Caleb King vs Kentucky AT HOME 77 yards

LOST BOTH those games too as a DIRECT RESULT.

For THAT, then, Caleb King is the STARTER at Tailback at The University of Ground Attack because we “UGA fans don’t know SQUAT about football” according to Coach Richt, only HE and Mike Bobo do.

Which explains of course, why with Matthew Stafford, our Passing Offense was # 85 in the nation.

Why with Knowshon Moreno NOT REDHSHIRTED that year, our Rushing Offense was # 56.

Why for 4 yrs in row we avg # 96 NCAA Rank in Penalties all 4 yrs

Why for 4 yrs in row we avg 21 fumbles a year all 4 years

Why for 4 yrs in a row we avg 14 interceptions a year all 4 yrs

Mr.Richt is still making poor decisions for this team. Ealey is by far the best rb on that team but will be sidelined for the opener. Thank God Mr.Richt was not coach during the Herschel Walker era because he would of been sidelined.

We at least have a assistent coach(Todd Grantham) who believes in putting his best players on the football field. When Mr.Richt gets himself fired for continuing to make stupid decisions I hope Todd Grantham takes over.

tony

August 27th, 2010

Here’s a list of bad decisions that Mr.Richt has made at uga starting with the most recent one:

1) He will sideline his leading rusher(Ealey) because King is a better pass protector. Now everybody in the SEC will know when to expect the run. They will block ever lane when Ealey is in the game.

2) Last season he redshirted Murray and Zach. Had he played Murray last season he would of been more prepare this season. Now the LeMay kid will be unhappy when he realize that he will be a 1 yr starter because he will refuse to redshirt the way he refuse to except his punishment at his hs.

3) He reshirted Moreno.

4) For 4 seasons he ignored the fact that he needed a better defensive coordinator.

5) He’s still ignoring the fact that he need a qualified offensive coordinator.

6) He sent his team on the football field after a touchdown.

7) He teaching his players to believe in superstition by changing the color of their uniforms and helmets against certain teams.

I can go on and on about this guy. He will continue to lose those 5 star recruits because they also knows that he is a bad decision maker.
