Will Georgia sellout streak extend into 10th season? (Updated)

(Updated 6 p.m.)

ATHENS – Georgia, which has sold out every home football game the past nine seasons, needs to sell a few hundred more tickets to keep that streak alive next week.

Less than 600 tickets remained available Wednesday for the Bulldogs’ Sept. 4 season opener at Sanford Stadium against Louisiana-Lafayette, UGA associate athletic director Alan Thomas said.

He said those tickets are part of a large block returned by Louisiana-Lafayette, which was contractually entitled to 4,500 tickets for the game. The Ragin’ Cajuns wound up needing only 490 tickets, Thomas said.

Georgia has no tickets currently available to any of its other five home games, and Thomas said he expects the remaining tickets to the Louisiana-Lafayette game to be sold. They are available on-line at georgiadogs.com or by phone at 877-542-1231.  The price is $45 apiece.

If the game sells out, that would extend Georgia’s streak of consecutive home sellouts into a 10th season. According to associate athletic director Claude Felton, the Bulldogs have sold out every home game since Mark Richt became coach in 2001 — a streak of 57 consecutive games. The last UGA home game not to sell out, Felton said, was the Nov. 25, 2000, game against Georgia Tech.

Generally, opponents can return unsold tickets from their allotments as late as three weeks before a game. Louisiana-Lafayette’s contract called for the school to receive an allotment of 4,500 tickets to sell, but the Ragin’ Cajuns took only 2,095 of  the allotted tickets initially, leaving Georgia with the other 2,405. Then Louisiana-Lafayette returned an additional 1,605 tickets prior to the three-week window allowed in the contract, Thomas said.

When opponents return tickets, Georgia puts them on sale to the general public. It’s possible there will be returns from other opponents this season; Idaho State (Nov. 6) would seem the most likely candidate. But Idaho State’s contract calls for an allotment of 2,500 tickets and so far none have been returned, Thomas said.

GT Alum….maybe if comments like yokels weren’t so common from the mouthes of Techies then maybe just maybe UGA grads like me wouldn’t despise Techies so much. My wife a grad of UNC Chapel Hill and Emory Law…has told me numerous times that Techies act just like Pukes from Duke. People are silly and bold on a keyboard, but quiet little buggers in the light.

@Papadawg Probably not. In general we are all fans, some diehard, some more apathetic. We always enjoy watching, but it doesn’t dictate our moods. Even in years where we were doing super, like 1990, it wasn’t a major aspect of our lives. We just have other things placed as priorities… Legit Question though, as there are probably some fairweather fans, just like everywhere else.

For all you Bugs, you will be hard pressed to find any UGA fans in trailer parks. They have all seen the wind blow in a different direction and cast their allegiance from FSU ’90s to UF ’00s to now Bama. As for me I stay out of the places, but you Techies seem fascinated by the whole do-it yourself meth-head chemistry sets that are popping up in the mobile homes these days.

Certainly there is a higher priority article than about 600 tickets not being sold…oh well, I am still going and we make money…I do believe Tech was down a little in season tickets…..that’s where it counts…

AltamahaDawg – Just for fun, I did the math. 30,000/4=7,500 a year. 250,000/7,500=33.33 year life span after graduation. Yikes.

That obviously is wrong, because over the last generation, enrollment has increased to where it is now. As I said, just for fun, no harm intended.

We’ll see. I recall an excelent receiver for GT that had the potential, his quarterback was always the best player on the other team though. And that string of numbers what does that mean? Were you trying to count? Here is a suggestion use what they taught you in counting 99 at uga, take your shoes and socks of and let go of that beer bottle. Thats is 1,2,3…

Just wanted to make sure you understand the reality of 1990. You tied North Carolina, won a pre-FSU ACC, and played a 2-loss Nebraska team in the Citrus Bowl. Big deal.

…who has no business being a journalist. You splatter a headline on the front page of the website that says “UGA short of a sellout” to garner attention. However, in the article itself you admit that this is due to the fact that ULL returned 600 tickets (less than 1% of total capacity) because they could not sell them. These tickets will be sold in no time if they aren’t already. And tell me exactly why this is news and why it deserves to be front and center on the website? RE-DONK-U-LOUS.

I will not ever buy another ticket for the 600 level seats they banish the visiting team to. My wife and I bought a pair to the Arizona State game last year and it was the most miserable seats I’ve ever sat in, rain and thunderstorms not withstanding. I walk 4 miles a day but that climb was a killer. I’m sure the returned tickets will sell, but come on, ALL the regular tickets available to the home team were sold out long ago. In the future I will by from a scalper and get decent seats.

Most GT fans I know have a very unhealthy obsession with Georgia that is rooted in feelings of inferiority. Kind of sad actually. Most Georgia fans consider GT more of an annoyance than a rival. Sorry, but that’s the truth.

@ Big Pete – I am inclined to agree with this. Although this was a definitely different when Tech won three in a row, it was huge on both sides of the line, but as UGA has slowly fallen off its own coattails (reference earlier comments about being the Ray Goff era all over again), and ACC has gotten more teams that are consistently higher ranked than UGA, Tech fans don’t consider it the biggest game of the season either. So it works both ways. It is the one we want to win the most, but hardly the most important.

As a Tech Alum and a Georgia Citizen my entire life I disagree. Why most GT fans hate uga is because for some reason you think you have a good school. Last time I checked US News and World Report uga was not ranked in the top ten in any academic category. For some odd reason you associate an ok football team with being a good school, that is a place where you get an education. And you also think you have some sort of football dynasty. Don’t know how you got that.

@ Villa Rica DAWG – The rivalry is still called “good clean old fashioned hate.” And while it is fun sometimes, it lost the clean aspect long ago. Which harkens back to earlier comments about the difference between people with the connections to the school, and those who just root for UGA.

Tech will always be inferior to Georgia, Auburn, Florida, LSU, and Alabama every year.

So maybe GT would be the 6th or 7th best team in the SEC.

GT’s high school offense would never make it week-in and week-out in the SEC.

@Wreckem – That isn’t exactly fair to UGA. It is a great school. It just started from an Agricultural perspective where tech started from a trade perspective. UGA has an incredible music program. Good Law and Business programs. And many more. Look at the vet school, it is well ranked, but it also ties back to the Agriculture roots. Same as Tech and technical and engineering.

Quit your belly aching and have fun with this whole thing.

@ dawg fight – this sir is idiocy. Check the Rankings, and you will see why we would be third or 4th in SEC and not this 6 or 7th.

@how2fish – I guess we could turn your statement around. Has your average UGA fan’s income and standard of living caught up to the average Tech fan’s? When those number get close to equal, then we will compare butts in seats at the stadium.
