(Updated 6 p.m.)
ATHENS – Georgia, which has sold out every home football game the past nine seasons, needs to sell a few hundred more tickets to keep that streak alive next week.
Less than 600 tickets remained available Wednesday for the Bulldogs’ Sept. 4 season opener at Sanford Stadium against Louisiana-Lafayette, UGA associate athletic director Alan Thomas said.
He said those tickets are part of a large block returned by Louisiana-Lafayette, which was contractually entitled to 4,500 tickets for the game. The Ragin’ Cajuns wound up needing only 490 tickets, Thomas said.
Georgia has no tickets currently available to any of its other five home games, and Thomas said he expects the remaining tickets to the Louisiana-Lafayette game to be sold. They are available on-line at georgiadogs.com or by phone at 877-542-1231. The price is $45 apiece.
If the game sells out, that would extend Georgia’s streak of consecutive home sellouts into a 10th season. According to associate athletic director Claude Felton, the Bulldogs have sold out every home game since Mark Richt became coach in 2001 — a streak of 57 consecutive games. The last UGA home game not to sell out, Felton said, was the Nov. 25, 2000, game against Georgia Tech.
Generally, opponents can return unsold tickets from their allotments as late as three weeks before a game. Louisiana-Lafayette’s contract called for the school to receive an allotment of 4,500 tickets to sell, but the Ragin’ Cajuns took only 2,095 of the allotted tickets initially, leaving Georgia with the other 2,405. Then Louisiana-Lafayette returned an additional 1,605 tickets prior to the three-week window allowed in the contract, Thomas said.
When opponents return tickets, Georgia puts them on sale to the general public. It’s possible there will be returns from other opponents this season; Idaho State (Nov. 6) would seem the most likely candidate. But Idaho State’s contract calls for an allotment of 2,500 tickets and so far none have been returned, Thomas said.

@ Can You Dig It – Why do you insist on personal insults? Are they the best you have? I have a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Registered Engineer in the state of GA. Siblings have degrees from tech in ME and in Applied Biology. My girlfriend has an Applied Mathematics degree from GT, My sister (applied biology) has a husband with an Electrical and Computer Engineering Degree from Tech. My girlfriends brother, uncle, and nephew have Engineering Degrees from GT. Why do you insist on insulting me personally?

I’m a little confused. AJC, is this news? This is not the red and black or what toliet paper substitue that they publish at uga. Come on there has got to be something more interesting to report like where Obama ate for dinner last night. Oh nevermind no one cares about that either. I guess you guys are just trying to meet your uga coverage quota. Great job! What’s the Good Word?

Gator 4 Life better than that joke Murray…then why did CUM spend so much time recruiting him? Face it against those teams in the role he played(mop up) Joe Cox would have looked like the 2nd coming of Peyton Manning.he may very well turn out to be a very good SEC QB but he is about to have to prove it on the field not have the Gator Nation anoint him before he takes his first snap as a starter.

This article is very misleading. The game will be a sell out by next week. I would imagine the game falling on labor day weekend may have something to do with the 600 tickets or so that haven’t been sold yet. I know a lot of my friends usually go to the beach on labor day.

I called the Tech ticket office and asked what time the South Carolina State starts. They asked what time I could get there. And they promised that the guys from Shorty’s garage would change the oil and give a lube job to everybody at the game. Shorty said they’ll be done by halftime.

@ Can You Dig It – What? You try to play hardball with your superiors, realize you are outgunned and you can’t handle it, so you revert back to name calling… How pathetic… Perhaps I should ask you, good sir, Can you dig it?
@how2fish – Again, humorous thought. I would say that you need to give him a couple of years to get a full set of his own recruits in to judge him completely though. I would say that a fair time would be either the end of this season or the end of next season. Since he was hired post 2007 season, his recruiting really didn’t start until after the 2008 season.
