Stats and more from Georgia ‘practice game’

ATHENS — “Georgia” beat “Louisiana-Lafayette” 38-24 in a practice game Wednesday in Sanford Stadium. Or was that 38-0?

UGA coach Mark Richt said he spotted the “Louisiana-Lafayette” team –- Georgia scout teamers impersonating the season-opening opponent — 21 points. And he gave the “Ragin’ Cajuns” another three points by counting a missed field goal as made.

Got that?

The teams played one half of football, with coaches trying to emulate game conditions as much as possible.

That included having the assistant coaches working from where they’ll be in real games -– Todd Grantham, Rodney Garner, Mike Bobo, Stacy Searels and Bryan McClendon at field level; Warren Belin, Scott Lakatos, Tony Ball and John Lilly upstairs in the coaches’ box.

The scrimmage was closed to the public and media, but Richt provided what he called “unofficial official” statistics afterward:

  • Quarterback Aaron Murray completed 9 of 17 passes for 127 yards and one touchdown. He threw no interceptions. “He’s still learning,” Richt said. “It wasn’t real bad, but there were a couple of times he could have made a better decision.”
  • Freshman QB Hutson Mason completed 5 of 10 passes for 69 yards.
  • Caleb King had five carries for 36 yards and Washaun Ealey four for 31.
  • Wide receiver Kris Durham had three catches for 78 yards and A.J. Green four catches for 40.
  • Branden Smith had a punt return of 63 yards and a kickoff return of 31.
  • Defensively, Darryl Gamble had eight tackles and Vance Cuff six.

Before the scrimmage, coaches named captains for the opening game. They are Shawn Chapas for the offense, Demarcus Dobbs and Cuff for the defense and Fred Munzenmaier for special teams.

Here are the statistics UGA provided (and remember, they’re “unofficial official,” meaning they’re incomplete and won’t add up in all cases):

I think Mason needs to play this year, forget the red shirt. He might be needed later in the year. Keep Gray at WR. He’s shown he’s not good enough at QB. For those who say that Mason needs to RS to save a year, it won’t matter since LeMay will be a Jr by then, and who knows how many other 4 or 5 star QBs will be on campus by then. If Mason plays well enough to be the backup, then get him spot duty throughout the season.

Rambo had a pick return TD, Jakar had an INT, and Marlon Brown returned a PB for a TD. Defense forced 2 TO’s, PB team blocked another and returned for TD, Special teams were great today. Branden Smith had 2 big returns on kicking team.

Keep in mind 5 or 6 OL were kept out today, to make sure they’ll be healthy for game 1. So Murray, King, Ealey, and Mason’s stats could have been much higher, considering that, not bad.

It’s good to see Murray taking care of the football, but I’m surprised that his passing efficiency against the scout team D isn’t any higher—wonder if it’s dropped passes, poor passes, or low percentage attempts—hope it’s the third. Great to hear that AJ, Durham, Ealey, and King took care of business. Still curious why we’re not seeing any meaningful scrimmage stats for Marlon Brown. It’s great to hear that the coaches feel like he’s improved a lot, but why hasn’t that shown itself with receptions in the scrimmages? Good to see the D playing well and forcing some turnovers as well. While there are still a lot of questions, I think Georgia is very underrated and positioned for a great year…should be 7-1 going into Jacksonville. Can’t wait till the 4th! Go Dawgs!

Tim Tucker

Jess

Don’t forget, the stats were all from only one half of football.

If you double everything:

Murray would have gone for 260 yards passing for 4 quarters, 2 td’s, 0 int’s.

Rushing game would have gone over 200 yards too for 4 quarters.

Raynard

August 25th, 2010
9:31 pm

Coach Richt said in post interview that Rambo had a 66 yard return for td. Smith had a 63 yard kick return. Jakar had a 42 yard int return. Ealey and Thomas both had a 15 yard run.

I think Georgia’s laying off the TE’s, don’t want to give anything away. This TE unit will dominate and be the difference against teams like SC, ARK, Fla.

It’s telling that the only “unofficial official” stats that were stated were offensive stats. So a couple guys racked up some tackles on defense. If that’s all we can say we’re in trouble. I hate to be a doomsdayer, but I feel a repeat of last year coming on. Our offense will win for us whatever games we win this year. Our defensive unit might as well be from the Pac 10. Freshman QB…well in Murray we trust. The season really is on his shoulders.

It’s all over. UGA is finished. If by CMR standard Murray can’t play worth anything ( given CMR standards are VERY low) UGA will go 3-9, losing to tech by 20 and Florida by 30. UGA should just quit this season. I mean IF MURRAY SUCKS this badly with his own teammate how is he going to play south Caroline, you all heard it here: 3-9 season for UGA 2010.

Tim Tucker

At least he didn’t throw an INT, but Murray’s numbers weren’t good. I have little doubt he will leave UGA as a really good qb, but right now he has a LONG way to go. He didn’t win the Elite 11 camp because he stunk, so he’ll get there. At leeast our running backs are good though.

As long as Murray had no interceptions , I’m ok with the passing performance. If we didn’t have any of the 1st or 2nd team players fumble the ball then that would be such an improvement from last years team it would be something to celebrate. Also, if there were officials calling the game I want to know how many penalty’s there were. UGA had 5 losses last year and every one of those games they help beat themselves way more than average. I can accept a team beating UGA but don’t help your opponent with 100 yards of penalties, 3 or 4 fumble and 3 more pass interceptions.

Dual threat quarterback Aaron Murray had 1 carry sack, for minus 6 yards

This is because he is not fast; he is not going to run the football because he is too small, and because he can only be 1-dimensional.

There continue to a lot of lies on this topic to these blogs on this point. They disregard the fact that despite Buck Belue calling for Hutson Mason in Game 1 early on, our season is shot with an injury to a smallish guy playing quarterback as a freshman who missed practices when he got here because of his leg and ankle injuries, and then missed 21 practices last season in the Fall because he threw his arm out, and then of course Logan Gray held Mike Bobo and Coach Richt hostage this Spring making us still not get Aaron Murray ready splitting the snaps at # 1 with Aaron Murray and Logan Gray both. In this situation, only an idiot poster with some AGENDA would even venture that diminutive Aaron Murray is great at running the football.

I see Washaun Ealey AGAIN, as at every game and as at every Scrimmage all Spring and now all Fall (over) out-performed Starter Caleb King.

If you have a problem with the comments about Aaron Murray not being ready, not being able to run the football, having missed so many opportunities to get snaps under center last year and this year, and about not just his height but his size and strength, I suggest sir that that is you wanting only to hear the kool-aid.

He is small. It’s a fact. Why pick on someone calling it like it is ? Oh, I see there is only person saying that, so if you tell that 1 guy not to, what ? That 1 guy will kowtow to your wishes ? Hey dawgster, how is that going by the way ?

murray had 2 overthrows early, when he was still nervous, but then calmed down and starting hitting people accurately and safely. murray also got flushed out of the pocket on a screen play, and instead of throwing it out of bounds, tried to scrmable and got sacked. Couple of things,…please don’t ever mention Drew Brees and Aaron Murray in the same sentence. Also,…..Murray is 5′11,…it is what is. Might as well list him at 6′4 while you’re at it.

The question is how did this Murray kid ever got rated so high during recruitment, it blows my mind. All he has ever done is get injured, even in plant HS missed half of the games in his senior year bc of injury. Yet CMR has no idea of a backup. UGA is a free loss, I see no other way around it. You got a new defense, a joke for a QB, no backup (Logan Grey playing wide receiver?) how can a team be in a worse shape than the current UGA team?

I’ve actually meet murrray and he is not 5′11”. He is over 6′ period. Check your sources. If he were under 6′ would all the best programs in the country offer him? Your not that bright, so let me help…NO! Obviously all the gt fans get some pleasure in saying that he is short, which is as pathetic as their record vs. UGA.

Warrior Queen Boudica no conspiracy here Hamilton and Rambo played on the Georgia side so it’s hard to intercept their own qurterback while they are on the bench. Bingham and the other walk-on played for LA Laf and committed the interceptions. Why do fans look for conspiracy theories don’t know why the coaches would want to lie and if they were I’m sure they are smart enough to know if they list a defensive player having an interception that there had to be a quarterback throwing one.

12-2 ” So who is your team of choice “… why the railing on Aaron Murray? The kid played in the highest classification in Florida and spurned the big 3 in Florida for Georgia- are we a little po’d at that…sounds so to me… my god UGA has their worst season in over 10yrs and everyone assumes that is the end… please– it has always fallen back on coaching for a number of years and yes Richt ws guilty of propping up his buddy and his cronies ignorant to the fact he was in over his head.. He finally made the long awaited change hence the new defensive coaches on board. ( the one constant between all of them is: THEY ARE TEACHERS!!! which is something UGA has not had in the past as evidenced by the lack of funadmentals- arm tackles… penalty’s…etc )

Stop panicing dawg fans. We have the best receiver if football. We have the best field goal kicker and punter. We have two good running backs with an O line that should be able to create some holes this year for the guys to run through. We have a young quarter back who is still learning but was highly recruited around the country and was damn good in highschool. The defense can only be better. This should be a good season. Enough sreaming about the sky falling. We had a lot of close games last year wins and losses. We should be better. Meaning some of the wins will not be the nail biters we had last year and some of the losses like Kentucky and the horrible LSU ref will not happen again. I doubt Tennessee is going to kill us this year. Tech lost a ton of talent. Ark has no D. Florida has a new quarter back, d coach, and a lot of new players. Our schedule is not as tough as it has been in the past. We do not play LSU or Alabama. Auburn will be much better and they probably could/should have beaten us last year. Yes, things could go horribly wrong, but you have to be optimistic with the opportunity the boys have this year. Still, I would rather play Techs schedule… What a joke. If they are not a 1 loss team when we get ready to play they should look for a new coach.

Best stat to come out of the practice game…no injuries….we stay healthy we will be fine. 12-2 still a gasbag I see. Wonder how much Mason’s passing yardage was YAC. Glad to see is playing ball and is probably a good kid, but alot of his record breaking stats from high school last year were padded by YAC. 3 yard pass, 60 yard run, net 63 yards passing. Anyway, good for him—the Bennett kid is a good player at receiver….oh yes, The Hell With Georgia.

Murray is short ,slow and can’t throw the football, our defense will not perform well under the 3-4 with our new DC Grantham.Let’s enjoy reading these great comments in their little dream world our maybe our foes will read this great stuff and take it to the bank, probable to good to be true, you think..Can’t wait to see these boneheads on game day, they might be shocked.

Some people on this blog are stupid as hell. These are a half of stats and they are unofficial meaning some things might not be correct. Murray’s stats are not that bad for 2 quarters. If they were great yall would be saying our backups suck. Are yall negative about every facet of life.

Calm down DAWG fans. We are okay!!! CMR doesn’t wanna give away too much to the media to be exposed at this time. That’s why the stats are “unofficial”. We will be just fine this year. Expect great things!!!

The sky isn’t falling, but even the most optimistic dawg fan has to admit that Murray is making them a little nervous. He looked poor in the Spring game and his stats from the scrimmages have been average. Meanwhile, Richt has no solid backup for him in case he goes down, and by the way, he seems to be a little injury prone. There really is no excuse for a coach who has been in place as long as Richt to end up in such a dire QB predicament.

Mason threw one nice pass that a TE dropped in the end zone as well. The numbers aren’t adding up but it not a conspiracy. It is still a team working on their game. Every day they learn more and improve. I can’t wait for many of you to explain how the very people you claim can’t prerform, play or are too short, no arm, too slow, too young… etc. are getting the job done. Amazing how so many really know so little about the people they are judging. Almost comical how much is repeated from bloggs or some evaluation of a kid when he was in HS. Do any of you ever question the so called “gurus” that produce these half truths and poor evaluations. So many believe what they read and don’t look at how motivated a player is to get better. Makes me question how much moxie, dedication and determination many folks have in their own lives. I’d hate to think that by the time I’m 18 to 19 years old I am finished and done improving in my career, profession or personal life. So many draw conclusions, so few correct. I can’t wait to “watch” what happens and expect big days ahead.

Bama will POUND Brantley into little pieces and LSU will finish off your season the next week…wait and see.
