Updating Anderson’s progress and Glenn’s recovery

Cleaning out the notebook to start the week:

+++++++

Justin Anderson is playing defense this month for the first time since his junior year of high school. But if Georgia’s season had opened last week, the 6-5, 330-pounder would have been a starter on the defensive line at the nose position.

He’s taking nothing for granted, noting that two weeks of practice remain before the first game and “anything can happen.”

But Anderson admits he’s farther along -– closer to a starting spot -– than he expected to be three weeks into preseason practice.

“To be honest, I didn’t” expect to be working with the No. 1 unit so soon, he said. “No, I didn’t. But hey, I’m just trying to get better.

“Coming on defense, I was kind of nervous at first. I knew I was physically going to do well. But in the past on the offensive line, I’ve had trouble with playbooks. So that was probably my biggest –- I wouldn’t say fright, but I was kind of skeptical about it. But I’ve picked up on it pretty good.

“Playing nose tackle,” he noted, “you just have to learn the base package.”

Anderson, a junior, likes the position. “Taking on those double teams every now and then, that’s probably the biggest challenge of it,” he said.

If Anderson starts at nose, DeAngelo Tyson shifts to an end.

+++++++

Here’s Mark Richt’s latest update on the recovery of offensive guard Cordy Glenn, sidelined the past couple of weeks with mononucleosis:

“We think Cordy will practice the week of the [first] game, if not sooner. In the beginning of the mono issue, the most important or most crucial part of it is the spleen can get enlarged, and that’s dangerous if you get hit with your spleen in that state. And once the spleen reduces the swelling, you’re still kind of fatigued, you’re still kind of tired. The spleen aspect of it, we feel real good about [now]. But he’s still got to get his strength back. . . . We’re trying to condition him now indoors, and when he handles that well enough, we’ll go outdoors and little by little we’ll phase him in.”

Glenn is one of two starters on the offensive line -– the most experienced facet of the team –- to miss much much of preseason practice. Center Ben Jones missed all of last week after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on Aug. 15 to clean up cartilage. Jones is expected to return to practice the week of the opening game. Also, a third offensive-line starter, right tackle Josh Davis, missed a couple of days with a minor ankle injury.

“You’d love to have them working together all this time, partially because you want the line to get used to each other but [also] for the offense in general to gain the confidence you need as a unit,” Richt said. “If your offensive line is run-blocking [and] pass-blocking, things are going to go well for you in practice, and as that happens, that gives everybody on the the entire offensive unit, including that young quarterback, confidence.

“I think there will be a little bit more of a mystery going into Game 1 as to how we’re really going to perform [offensively], whereas if [the starting offensive linemen] were practicing every one of those 29 opportunities, everybody would have a better sense of what’s going to happen.”

+++++++

Hope you read Steve Hummer’s excellent piece on Aaron Murray (and family) in Sunday’s AJC.

Chatting after practice Friday, Murray noted an advantage Georgia’s offense should be able to exploit in the red zone: three tall receivers in 6-4 A.J. Green, 6-5 Kris Durham and 6-5 Marlon Brown.

“We have three big, big targets,” Murray said. “Pretty much get to the line of scrimmage and whoever’s got the shortest cornerback, we’re going to pick on him for that play.

“All three of them definitely are going to be huge weapons in the red zone, where all you got to do is throw it in the back of the end zone and just let them jump up for it. It’s either going to be a catch or it’s going to be knocked down. The chances of it getting picked are going to be pretty bad unless I make just a horrible throw. If I just throw it high enough where they can out-jump someone, it’s a great shot for us.”

…give it a rest on the Samuel update question – Tim Tucker is being nice and not saying the obvious, which is that the kid did not take advantage of his chance at RB last season, and obviously cannot play linebacker at the D1 level. He will not see the field this year, unless on special teams.

He really should have transferred to a 1AA school if he wanted to play, but he wanted to remain a Bulldog (who wouldn’t) and for that I give him kudos…

…you are way off in your rant against me, but that is OK – I gave kudos to Samuel for remaining a Bulldog, but that is about it – he cannot play consistently at the D1 level, he proved that last year – not a slam on him, just a fact. And, he is now 20 years old, not 19 – though Ealy is now 21, which is a weird situation how a sophomore can be almost 2 years older than a junior – but, again, a fact is a fact…

So, our OL will have two starters out of shape for the SC game? Man . . .

I got mono when I was 19. I was a competition water skier, in a 2-on-two basketball league, and in great shape, and when I was finally over the virus, I was a weakling. It took a couple of months to start feeling normal again. That was a long time ago, though, so maybe treatments for recovery are better now.

If not, Cordy Glenn will not have his normal strength til mid-season.

Anderson has tremendous size, gets really low, has a burst, pretty amazing for his size, he’s 6′ 5”, 330 lbs, not many teams on Georgia’s schedule that can match up with Anderson’s size.

Getting the O-Line healthy for game 1, not a big deal. Just have em’ ready for SC. If the O-Line struggles in 1st 3 games, you’ll just need to defense and special teams to carry the guys for 2 games, which they will if needed. Georgia has a lot of dpeth at O-Line, will be fine.

Tim Tucker

Tim: Mark Richt said last week that Richard Samuel would be out another week or so. As for redshirting, I asked Todd Grantham about that. He said that while the missed time hurts Samuel, it’s still too early to say about redshirting: “I think we’ve still got a ways to go with that,” Grantham said. “How soon he would get ready could indicate what we would do. But right now I would still plan on using him and just see how he can come along.”

The spelling on this vent is not up to 4th grade level. You will have to take remedial spelling. You have murdered the English language and shall be punished. Bean will be good because he won’t have to think so much at nose tackle. That is not making fun of him – just a fact. He had a lot of problems with blocking – often out of position or late getting where he was supposed to be. Maybe that is a lack of coaching in the past. I don’t know. At nose tackle you don’t have as much to think about.

Tim,

If someone at AJC could compile all the different ways that a Dawg fan can watch the 1st game on TV and the options for listening to it over the internet, that would be most helpful for those of us who can’t be ‘tween the hedges.

If it spelled out, direct tv’s gameplan, and other cable/satelite and the various ways pay or otherwise to listen to it or even better watch it on the internet, I bet Dawg Nation would be most appreciative of that research. Thanks for the updates you have been providing.

Agree with the posters about throwing too many fade patterns. It can be a good play when you are first and goal or inside the 15, but is still a fairly low percentage pass even with the very tall receivers that we have.

I’d hate to see us relying TOO MUCH on it. Same goes for throwing bombs on 3rd and 7. We seemed to do that alot the last two years. I’m not against going deep a few times a game, but I think we do it too often on important 3rd downs where a 9 yard completion would keep the drive going.

Others say they believe him because of how great of guy he is, but I have to be honest and say I don’t know the man personally so I just can’t speak to that with personal knowledge. What I DO know is that we WOULD have seen the pictures by now if he were at any parties in Miami.

I am a UGA man to the core, grad, etc. I do not follow the other big boys ( SEC schools ) but I am curious to see if they also experience the annual depletion of first team O linemen during pre season camp like we at UGA do. This has been the trend at UGA since the Ray Goff days.

This is the one reason that during recruiting, I always beg for UGA to sign about 3 more wide bodies than they actually THINK that they will need …………cause come that next camp, whammo. There go the knees, the ankles and the inexlicable flu like symptons, mono, etc.

This is the strength of the UGA football team??? and we are already walking wounded and the ball has yet to be snapped in a real game. Amazing this stat is for UGA.

It’s good to see Bean is doing well at nose tackle. I understand a lot more now with him mentioning the play book difficulties. You Dawgs remember all those untimely false start penalties last year? A lot of em was Justin Anderson. And I do mean a lot. I think in one game it was twice in a row..

Anyways, O line is a lot more mental than other positions. If someone is having trouble with that aspect, there is nothing wrong with trying out another spot that isn’t as taxing on mental awareness.

Nose Tackle could be considered one of those spots.
Coach: “son, watch the ball, when it moves you move.”

Demetre Baker is the real deal at LB, quick as lighting(could play more than R Samuel)..said Boo Malcome is tough to bring down..he also went on and on about H Mason, but then again, he did that last year about Z Mettenberger(stay tuned)..and he thinks that our DB’s could be a real difference in the Defense this year, even though AJ catches anything that’s close to him..

I recall watching that Orange Bowl in which GT was whupped. Did Florida have a running back then called Larry Smith? I remember a name like that on a Gator running back that just ate GT up that night. My dad’s family are all gators and I am a dog and we watched that game that night.

GT fans of today still will not deny this factoid:

GT, counting the 67 Orange and the 09 Orange and even though the Citrus was a very seconday bowl in 90, I’ll count that as a major bowl …………..has been to three major bowls since the mid to late 1950s. GT has been to three major bowls in like 55 years. THREE !!!

Some guy here just insisted that I had to go all the way back to the 50s, to prove that GT was such and such. I did just that and that was my exact point ( lost on him ) that GT has only been to three major bowls since General Eisenhower was POTUS. Three majors

Go Dogs.

MAJOR BOWL AND THE RING WITH IT

August 23rd, 2010
3:33 pm

Imagine this ……the GT players wearing a 1967 Orange Bowl ring are now around 62-65 years old. Hey guys…. congrats, even though you lost. The next batch of GT players to wear a major college bowl ring are today’s GT players. Last year’s GT kids also have Orange Bowl rings and the memory of slow, white Iowa farm boys putting a whuppin on GT’s urban punks. Dwyer had 0 yds in the first half. Entire GT team had 33 yds in first half. Sad. Humiliating that whuppin was to slow Iowa farm boys.

Yes, the 90 GT team has NC rings, along with three or four other schools that claimed a share of the 90 NC. My point? There are 42 years between the 67 Orange Bowl squad and the 09 Orange Bowl squad. That means that GT has only been to two major bowls since the late 60s. Two!!!

Now, tell that story to today’s recruits. yeah, tell em ………they will really be impressed about GT’s TWO MAJOR BOWLS in nearly 1/2 of a century. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAHA

Now, if these same kids head over to Athens, they will see three Sugar Bowl trophies in the last 9 years and two Capitol One Bowl trophies and a Outback trophy ( 6 MAJORS in 9 yrs. ) and they will know that UGA has won 8 games or more for 13 years in a row and is the ONLY school to achieve that fabulous status. UGA is the ONLY ONE to win 8 or more going over 13 and soon to be 14 yrs.

GT? Tw0 major bowls in nearly 1/2 century.

The yellow maggots learned last year that the DAWGS (Run-This-State) and the Allycrocks will learn this year that the DAWGS begin a 10-15 year dominance of the slimy lizzards down in Jacksonville (lead by a Floridian that has his heart in UGA).

Who writes the headlines for your articles? I read “GAC basketball star nixes Georgia” and thought what in the world happened.

Turns out he just fell in love with UVA. Why can’t the headlines be that instead of a negative? He had UGA in his top 4, but fell in love on his first official visit to college.

Just face it unless they redshirt Richard Samuel 2-3-91(19) they will have wasted a tremendous opportunity to develop an athlete to his maximum by switching him back to LB from RB instead of playing him as an LB after a redshirt season..or leaving him at RB and running the ball more with the other two backs. We needed a running back last year and he did his very best…repeat did his very best…Ealey 6-1-89 (21) had more experience but came in overweight, King 1-10-88 (22) was injured so give Samuel credit instead of trashing him.. He did his best and should be commended. What would our running back situation have been last year without his efforts when Ealey and King were not ready. Quit trashing the kid…..Just a what if…Suppose King and Ealey have great years and both go in the draft…We are back to inexperienced recruits if we get one of them… Samuel needs two full years as a starting LB…the only way he can possibly get that is a redshirt this year and hopefully he has progressed enough to have two great years as a Linebacker.

Georgia Tech has a losing record to Georgia and has NEVER been consensus National Champions (though there is no real National Champion in college football and never has been)

Florida has a losing record to Georgia and in over 100 years of football they have NEVER managed to go undefeated

Both have fewer wins, conference championships, bowl appearances, bowl wins, all americans, NFL alumnus, etc.

Two powerhouses for sure.
