Richt on poll: ‘I hope we play well enough to move up. That’s the plan.’

From AJC correspondent Andy Johnston in Athens:

Georgia will begin the football season No. 23 in the Associated Press media poll, which was released this morning. It is the Bulldogs’ lowest preseason AP ranking since being unranked entering the 2001 season, coach Mark Richt’s first in Athens.

“I’m thankful we’re ranked,” Richt said after this morning’s practice. “It’s important to be ranked. I hope we play well enough to move up. That’s the plan.”

The preseason rank marks Georgia’s return to the AP poll after falling out on Oct. 4 last season. Georgia started the 2009 season No. 13 but was not ranked after the fourth week of the season.

The Bulldogs are ranked No. 21 in the USA Today coaches’ preseason poll, released earlier this month.

Georgia is among six SEC teams, the most of any conference, ranked in the AP poll. Two SEC teams are in the top four: No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Florida. Arkansas, which will play Georgia in Athens on Sept. 18, is ranked No. 17.  LSU is No. 21 and Auburn No. 22.

If we beat SCAR and the Hogs, we’ll move past Tech in the polls. However, if Tech does beat UNC in Chapel Hill, it might be a tight race between the Jackets and Dawgs all season. Congratulation to our rivals, but take it from me, you don’t want to celebrate preseason rankings too much.

Foks …………this pre season poll stuff means nada, nothing. CMR is right ……..win and move up. The ratings will change on the first full weekend of ball, anyway. They will matter starting 9/6/10.

UGA or Oregon or Idaho, ALabama, LSU or U of F or SMU could all be ranked at # 56. If they win all of their games or in UGA’s case, by playing in the SEC, winning say 10 ………… UGA will be in the top 12 or so. Then, win the NY Day bowl and end up around 7th or 8th, possibly. Then and only then do the polls matter. This goal should be UGA’s target ………..period. NY Day bowl win.

Under Obama’s way of looking at the polls ………the more games that you lose, then the higher rated that you “should be”. After all, some other school ( rich school) recruited the best kids and you “could not reach your potential” ……..so you lost every game. Right?

So far, college football has not sunk to those low achieving depths ……….. yet.

Go Dogs and let us win at least 10!!!!!

Thanks how2, I actually root for you guys everygame but the obvious one. We have had the usual bumps and bruises and a few surgeries, but only to backups. Brantley has looked exceptional and the enterior D line, LB’s and DB’s are looking good. The only concerns are with the two DE’s which might prompt more use of the 3-4 which has been part of the scheme for the past several years. Probably the biggest concern will be having Brantley avoid injury. If that happens, all bets are off.

Attention, everyone, especially dawgtards. We will now observe a moment of silence in memory of Saint Jan Kemp, who exposed the shameful practices at UGA that were initiated and carried out by Vince Dooley. Dooley’s image as a coach and a nice guy were forever shattered during the trial, not to mention the one million dollars that dawgtards had to pay Saint Jan. These practices of recruiting morons and coddling them for four years, them tossing them out like garbage, are still going on, but at least the world knows what’s going on now.

And now, the moment of silence…

Thank you. You may resume your normal activities now.

It’s as simple as it’s ever been…dominate the teams you’re supposed to beat and beat, pretty or ugly, the teams that are supposed to beat you. We’ll be fine – obviously depending on injuries and how young Mr. Murray and the defense performs – in fact if the cards play out as they very well may, we could be in the SEC Championship game and then we all know what can come from that.

I know a lot of people say dawg fans say the same thing every year. I’m not one of those fans. Last year after we lost to Oklahoma St. I knew it would be a long season. I have been following UGA and how they are doing in practice since the new coaches arrived. All the feedback form the players have been good. Without them saying anything you can tell they are happier with the new coaches. The defense will be better than last year, but they wont be a great or #1 defense either. I think they will surprise a lot of people. The play of the defense will determine what kind of season we have. People can say what they want but EVERY team still has to take it one game at a time because anything can happen. When you think about it its about where you are ranked at the end of the season.

I mean baring major injuries how can you doubt it, our line will be bigger and more experienced as will the same backs that hung 300+ yards on you last year…what reason to you have to think you can stop that yeah your defense might be better this and I hope it is but it not going to be able to take the pounding your best hope of a win is to out score us you won’t stop us…and when CPJ starts passing just head for the exits its going to get ugly.

Teams Should be Ranked: I have said that for years, begin the next year where the previous one ended. If you were number one, you are number one until some beats you (I said that before Alabama was #1). But these rankings sell newspapers, magazines and bring views to sports talk shows, so they will never end.

GIven that, I think the best place to be ranked at the beginning of the season is around 8 or 9. You can easily move up but you don’t have a bullseye on your back.

I love the trash talk that comes out of the dawg haters. But looking at the polls there are a ton of question marks up and down the top 25. There are only two teams that really don’t have any question marks in the top 10, Ohio State and Boise. I guess by everyones account of how accurate these polls are we just as soon go ahead and crown them. They both return most of there starters from both sides of the ball. Bama and UF are both replacing a ton of people, mostly on the defensive side of the ball, not to mention UF replacing a coordinator.

Dawg Nation,
I am surprised by the over confidence I am reading lately. If you keep in mind that our starting QB has not taken a GameDay snap, that we have a completely new (though I believe vastly superior) D, young, raw talent with some experienced anchors and Bobo calling O Plays, we are NOT the powerhouse many of your seem to think.
South Carolina has a real shot to knock us off early on – and that is where our weakness is due to the above facts. If we can keep it together early on we MIGHT have a shot at Florida but that is something of a longshot.

I hope I am all wrong but while faith can move mountains it cannot beat a better and more experienced ball team.

Come on people, can’t we all get along? UGA fans, back off spouting off on your record against Tech. Its common knowledge even out here in LA that you beat the bees like a drum. UGA fans, I know its hard to be humble when you root for the Dogs, but try just a little more humility, because many readers on this blog are not as fortunate as you. UGA rival fans, emphasize more the positives of your own team. Sure, you may not be a Top 20 Public University. Sure, you don’t have a college town equal to Athens. Sure you may not own 132 SEC titles, and National Championships in 8 sports, but there are plenty of things for Tech and every SEC team to be proud of, its just that you may have to dig a little harder to find them, but they are there.

Looking forward to game 1 – regardless of who we are playing, always a great day (assume the same for fans of every school around the country). This is my 10th year of season tickets since graduating and this year I’ll be taking my daughter to her first game. As for the polls, to be ranked at all pre-season this year I’d say is good (based on last year and new QB). To the on commentor, I actually don’t see the normal over confidence in UGA fans this year – I do see a lot of optimism and excitement, much different though than over confidence. My prediction for the year 9-3 or 10-2, which would be a step in the right direction (unless the 3 losses are Florida, Tech, and Tennessee). WIll be interesting to see how long the Tech talk contiues, the ACC appears to be much improved this year. Less than 2 weeks until kick-okk with all the games on Thursday!

Interesting thought…..UGA is ranked anywhere from unranked to 20 in the polls….Oklahoma is ranked in the top 10 in almost all polls. Both teams were 8-5 last year. UGA returns 10 on O, 6 on D. Oklahoma returns 5 on each side. What’s the difference??? Why is OU ranked so much higher than UGA? Preseason polls don’t mean crap…..we’ll know the truth sometime in late October, then finally around Thanksgiving what kind of team we have.

As far as the rankings go, they’re meaningless. UGA could be ranked 64th (Orlando Sentinel..lol), but if they go out and win the East, then win the SEC, they’ll be playing for the NC. Just like every other SEC school has that same opportunity regardless of what their preseason rank is.

First of all, I am not worried about our preseason ranking.. Secondly the AP is the most useless poll around. Its not calculated in the BCS calculations, why is there such a big deal about it? If you want discussion talk about the coaches poll or Harris since they actually has an effect on the outcome (which I believe we are ranked about the same in the coaches, Harris not out yet) . I lost all respect for the AP poll when the AP gave USC the national championship in 2003 when LSU actually won the national championship game. Then they failed to award it to Auburn in 2004 even though they had a perfect record. Atleast be consistent!! And they should strip the 2004 NC title from USC for their guilty verdict..

I understand we have a new QB and a new Defense. We have a nice schedule to do some damage with, and still we’re ranked in the 20’s
I have to remind you all, UF has a “new starting” QB that has only played weak mop up and against Kentucky (which he couldn’t score in) and a new Defensive Coor. ( UF fan – do you really not expect the same drop off on defense that you had after losing your O-Coord last year? ) I think we all know —– He’s no Charlie Strong!
Add in your 1st schedule in over 5 years where you have to play 2 good teams back to back (check it out) makes your beginning ranking very iffy at best.
BTW: Termgator – you only know what Urban wants you to hear about how your doing. (UF practice is CLOSED, so Urban can *”sercretly”* install a passing offense because if Brantly runs, Brantly gets hurt) Urban’s “word” to non gator fans has no merit (another 3-4 loss year and he’ll blame it on being young) remember the class that just left had 4 losses the 1st year they had to start.
UF is Overhyped and Overranked (I remind you UF was only up by 3 over USC with 7 min left in the game last year) UF has the worst WR core they’ve had in DECADES!
I can’t wait for the return of Urban Crier! you should have went with your gut and quit! Your run is over!

“Last year we were under the radar…hey that’s a great place to be. F@#$ That!!! The best place to be is where expectations are high!Get used to it, it’s always going to be that way.”
–Rex Ryan, Hard Knocks.

For UGA to become a championship program, they need to adopt a championship mentality like Rex Ryan is talking about. It’s always easy to be under the radar and knock off other teams. But you have to learn how to handle expectations, which means that you prepare for everyone’s best shot and you’re prepared to give them yours in return. Florida and Bama have been able to handle the expectations for the most part, while UGA absolutely face planted in 2008. The difference? Leadership.

I don’t care about having a team with NFL talent. You know what care about? Wins, especially wins over rival schools. And it starts with having the right mentality, the kind that says ” I don’t give a damn if you have Jesus Christ playing QB for your team! We’re going to kick the ever living dog crap out of you the next 3 hours! And if you want this win, you’ll have to crawl over our dead bodies to get it!!!” That is a championship mentality. THAT is what wins. And UGA has only had it in spurts during Richt’s tenure( parts of 2002, the later half of 2007). UGA has a great college town, great instate talent, and one of the greatest revenue generating athletic departments in the country. All the resources are there to win and win big. It’s time to demand excellence! And if Richt can no longer deliver that for us, then McGarity must move in a different direction.

On the other hand it appears it will be the dawgs who will have to upset a lot of teams

Gatorbait 17-3

The Gators should walk away with the East this season. South Carolina is soft, UGA & Tennessee are in rebuild mode, and Kentucky & Vandy will be a non-factor. The Gators are in a very talent rich state and will continue to have great recruiting classes while FSU and Miami rebuild. With that being said, it takes 2-3 years for a great recruiting class to develop. The Florida defense in 2007 was comprised of under classmen and they took their lumps that year going 9-4. But in 2008 and 2009, those same players that got it handed to them in 2007 were the strength of the team.

I think the 2010 Gators won’t lose to any team in their division unless they are bitten by the injury bug. I think John Brantley will be utilized similar to how Meyer utilized Alex Smith at Utah, mixing the run and pass. I really don’t think the offense will drop that much and to be honest it wasn’t all that strong last season, especially after Tebow’s concussion. But I think the defense will not be as dominant as they have been the last 2 years because they are breaking in younger players like they were in 2007. I’m thinking the Gators finish 11-3 or 10-4.

LHardingDawg

August 22nd, 2010
6:17 pm

I’m not sure about the 43 supposed students being arrested. But if it were true, 43 out of 33000 is probably not a bad ratio. I’m also sure Florida with a student population of 45000 would have more. I’m also sure that, say an Auburn, with 25000 students would probably have a few less. To even bring it up in a football blog is stupid and very unmature.

As far as the Gators, they are very much like Georgia. New coaches, new quarterback, and more than one unknown. It should be a interesting year for every team in the SEC. The games will fall as they fall and each team will adjust to the ups and downs of their individual programs.

Bulldog , we are still waiting on that answer. When was it? You remember it right?. Was it Ray Goff’s period? Lets assume not. Donnan? Where you a happy resident of Donnan”s neighborhood? Since he couldn’t beat Tech or Auburn, or UF very often and yes also lost to KY, Ol Miss, SC (2x), I assume you meant before that. So we must be talking about Coach Dooley. Is that the time you remember? Where you even around? If so, that’s the time that you compare today game and today’s other teams in the conference to? Why can’t things be like they were 20 and 30 yrs ago..really? That’s you standard for the mess Richt has us in, its not like it was 30 years ago. My goodness.

BTW coach had a losing record to AU. Did you know that. 3-5 against Bama. Lost to ole’miss about every fifth attempt. And SC. And Kentucky. Lost to tech every forth time and UF every third. Oddly was 1-2 against Arkansas. Probably “hoping” to do better in that series?

So your assessment of “that’s the neighborhood we’re living in now. Get used to it until we get a new HC.” Uh, where exactly is that old neighborhood……….the corner of Fictitious Street, and Made It Up boulevard? And by new, you mean like the one you “remember” that didn’t have any better record, or one like you couldn’t possible remember because he never existed?

He lost 13 his last 4 years and we fired him for it.

Coach Richt has lost 14 his last 4 years.

Lost to Georgia tek, excuse me we LOST to a team who including their win over us won 4 games all season long – Vandie.

Oh, that doesn’t count.

We lost 3 of 4 to 4 of the lousiest vols teams of all-time.

We are 2-2 vs Kentucky.

We are # 3 Fulmer Cup the last 4 years.

We are WORSE than Florida last 4 years

We are WORSE than LSU last 4 years

We are WORSE than Bama since Nick Saban got there.

We are 3-4 at HOME vs SEC East teams the last 4 years.

And, there is not 1 team of the 7 games that we should have lost.

NOT 1.

THIS is what YOU want to talk about ?

All I said was merely the fact that we are the # 6 Ranked SEC team.

GET OVER IT.

12-2

I NEVER said we are going to be lousy this 2010 season.

It is, after all the 10th year of this regime.

A regime noted for the fact that the head coach I like has had a preference he said for NO NFL coaches because he said they are not loyal and work only for money.

IS THERE ANOTHER REASON TO WORK ?

I see we are all about altruistic goals now.

Forget that 9 years 1980 to 1988 we lost 21 games, had HIGHER win percentage, BEAT Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in Bowl Games, and oh by the way won Consensus National Championship.

Forget that 9 years 1940 to 1948 we lost 21 games also, had HIGHER win percentage, BEAT Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in Bowl Games, and oh by the way won Consensus National Championship.

We were NOT in the news daily for being the MOST Arrested / Suspended University in the United States of America, off the field.

We did not average # 96 NCAA Rank in Penalties ON THE FIELD.

We did not average 21 fumbles per year every year of the last 4 years.

We did not average 14 interceptions per year every year of the last 4 years.

We did NOT have a LOSING RECORD to 4 lousy SEC teams at HOME, none highly ranked, over the last 4 years that currently make up The SEC East.

We did NOT lose 8 games to teams NOT RANKED in the Top 25 Final AP Poll.

We did NOT lose to 17 of the 19 games against the Top 25 Final AP Poll.

We did NOT lose to 8 of the 11 games against Top 10 Final AP Poll teams.

We have a 1-year window THIS 2010 SEASON to go 12-2. THAT does NOT make us the # 2 best SEC Team. The SEC teams who will be HIGHER RANKED than Georgia, all play far better schedules, tougher schedules than we do. It’s like 2002 and 2007 when NEITHER YEAR did we beat a single great team, not 1 and we LOST games BOTH years to horrible teams, NOT Top 25 Final AP Poll RANKED teams. I believe that 2010 we should be able to go 12-2 with the best defense of the Coach Richt Era, Ray Goff Era and Jim Donnan Era and best Defense of the Vince Dooley Era once we could not dump Dooley for Erk Russell; we have as good a kicking tandem as there is in America and if we don’t play walk-ons on Special Teams, or the 5 walk-ons who got Scholarships given to them instead of recruiting a top player when God knows we are lacking talent now compared to what Jim Donnan left behind for Coach Richt, we should have better special teams since we do have guys who can return and should be able to tackle.

It’s year 10 of this regime.

We have 10 of the 11 starters back on Offense.

12-2.

Pick on me all you want but you haven’t had the guts to say compared to my 12-2 what your prediction is.

NONE OF YOU.

Then, after this season, losing 15 seniors and 4-5 juniors, we CLEARLY will see a significant drop-off from this 2010 season in 2011 and we play a far tougher schedule 2011 to this soft easy schedule this season.

YOU are the ones worried about losing to South Carolina in week 2; not I.

17-19 vs Top 25 Final AP Poll teams is not as good as Wally Butts 1940 to 1948 and not as good as Vince Dooley 1980 to 1988, not by a long shot.

We lost only 21 games both 1940-1948 nine years and 1980-1988 nine years as well, just as Coach Richt’s Lousy Coaching Staff SQUANDERED our talent in this state 2001-2009 nine years of 27 losses, 3-8 vs Top 10 Final AP Poll teams, and 8 LOSSES to 8 teams who even with their win over us were NOT Top 25 Final AP Poll teams BY DIRECT COMPARISON.

Don’t give this B.S. that Coach Richt’s 9 years are better than EITHER 1940 to 1948 nor better than 1980 to 1988.

There is NO COMPARISON on the field or off the field.

And, the vast majority of what Coach Richt has taken the flack for is OFF THE FIELD being # 1 Fulmer Cup Standings TODAY.

And, # 3 since Fulmer Cup Started after the 2005 season.

Couple his Fulmer Cup Standings for 47 arrests / suspensions since February 2007 not quite 4 years ago with his last 4 years of 10-10 vs SEC East and you have a combination of which, has him in the position where he damn well better go 12-2 this season with this schedule for after this season, he will NOT be in a position to have a 12-2 season the year after this 2010 season, in 2011.

We are NOT headed up. We have a 1 year window this season.

Coach Richt is given credit for being a nice guy.

NOT for NOT LOSING.

There are 18 teams the last 4 years whom Coach Richt does NOT have more wins than. There are only 3 states who have more high school players who go on to the NFL than the State of Georgia. UGA is the # 11 program all-time in 1-A wins. There is NO EXCUSE for Coach Richt finding TODAY 18 teams whom he does NOT have more wins than over the last 4 years. NONE. This is a different Era. You want to compare Coach Richt IN THIS ERA to these 18 teams he does NOT have more wins than over the last 4 years, once the Jim Donnan recruits all went into the NFL.

I don’t see how we could be ranked any higher than # 19

therefore, with 18 teams whom Coach Richt does NOT have more wins than

over the last 4 years

No I am not trying to compare Richt to Ray Goff. Quite the opposite. The guy said ” remember when….. I DO”. That would seem to me to indicate a time frame that existed sometime in the history of Georgia Football in which he was likely alive. Goof was a coach here during that time so I was ruling him out since he didn’t always beat Vandy, Ky, FL and AU. every year.

And let me rephase the question. Do you agree that the ranking of Georgia as the 6th worst team in the SEC this year is accurate? Maybe that removes the woo factor for ya.

You can’t compare Richt to anyone in any era. He had established himself as a good coach, had being the key word. He has regressed significantly the last 3 years. He allowed the program to slide into mediocrity. He now has to reprove himself. This should not happen at this level. One of the many differences and probably the biggest one has been his intensity, or lack of. I don’t care how you slice it, he sets the tone for the program, from the assistant coaches to the players, even to the fans intensity level. This Dawg hopes the gimmicks are gone and we get down to some real old fashion, physical, won in the trenches football. I know that’s not CMR’s style and that’s what worries me.

Still@theBar 1st off we have won more games in the last decade, oh and genius we were talking about the last 10 years..you of course can’t follow the discussion well enough to see that and give numbers about the last 4 years..your really need to try and keep up..or are the jello shots getting to you? Oh and news flash kids in college drink..really its true its true ! The difference is that UGA arrests students for underage drinking not give them a ticket as is the case at most schools..by the way the 18 year drinking age is almost as big a joke as you are.. but your getting better you didn’t play the race card or defame anyones mother so that is a positive.

gatobait 17-3,

Still here calling everyone out and trying to pass himself off as classy.

Calls UGA fans delusional yet won’t admit that he has labeled Aaron Murray a midget only because he didn’t sign with florida even though Meyer wanted him BAD.

Pot meet kettle.

did Dooley have to face any of the following?

Spurrier-NO
Meyer-NO
Saban-NO
Miles-NO
Fulmer-NO

He made his hay against charlie Pell, Doug dickey, Galen Hall, Morrison at SC.

Comparing the coaches he faced to the league today is a joke.

Dooley averaged 8 wins a year and he is the best we ever had according to you?

Richt averages 10 wins a year and gets us 2 titles in a much tougher league and he is an idiot?

You are saying you are not worried about SC game?

You have been predicting over and over and over and over again that we would be 10-11 vs SEC East after that game.

Now we are going to win that game according to you?

I tell you what.

Don’t bother coming to any of the games this year, home or away.

We don’t want your fat booing, drunk a$$ sitting with us. give your ticket to a fan of the opponent. At least it is obvious where they stand.

See what happens why Tebow gets hurt and can’t play. People like me go on AJC and make comments under an article about Georgia Bulldog football. I can’t help it! Work ‘em, Silly Gators!!!

And NO I was NOT selectively picking the years to look at, ignoring Richt last 4 years. The Boosters and Board will decide what years to compare, so it really doesn’t matter anyway. What I WAS doing was debating the idea of folks doing just that. Selectively ONLY looking at some years. Specifically, Richt worst years and comparing them to Dooley’s best years. Those best year occuring after he had 17 yrs of OJT at Georgia BTW.

Folks should hold Richt to whatever standard they please. Today is today, the stakes are higher, the rewards are higher. I don’t think even he would argue that his team are not up to the current standard lately. But it’s just factually wrong to claim the standard was set in the past. He is the one responsible for setting it where it is, and no coach in the past would have survived it.

DawginLex, I also would not want some negative overgrown Army Brat sitting next to me at a ballgame BOOING the team and cussing everything in a futile attempt to prop up his self-esteem. Just in case there was any question about how I would feel about that.
