From AJC correspondent Andy Johnston in Athens:
Georgia will begin the football season No. 23 in the Associated Press media poll, which was released this morning. It is the Bulldogs’ lowest preseason AP ranking since being unranked entering the 2001 season, coach Mark Richt’s first in Athens.
“I’m thankful we’re ranked,” Richt said after this morning’s practice. “It’s important to be ranked. I hope we play well enough to move up. That’s the plan.”
The preseason rank marks Georgia’s return to the AP poll after falling out on Oct. 4 last season. Georgia started the 2009 season No. 13 but was not ranked after the fourth week of the season.
The Bulldogs are ranked No. 21 in the USA Today coaches’ preseason poll, released earlier this month.
Georgia is among six SEC teams, the most of any conference, ranked in the AP poll. Two SEC teams are in the top four: No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Florida. Arkansas, which will play Georgia in Athens on Sept. 18, is ranked No. 17. LSU is No. 21 and Auburn No. 22.

No I am not trying to compare Richt to Ray Goff. Quite the opposite. The guy said ” remember when….. I DO”. That would seem to me to indicate a time frame that existed sometime in the history of Georgia Football in which he was likely alive. Goof was a coach here during that time so I was ruling him out since he didn’t always beat Vandy, Ky, FL and AU. every year.
And let me rephase the question. Do you agree that the ranking of Georgia as the 6th worst team in the SEC this year is accurate? Maybe that removes the woo factor for ya.

You can’t compare Richt to anyone in any era. He had established himself as a good coach, had being the key word. He has regressed significantly the last 3 years. He allowed the program to slide into mediocrity. He now has to reprove himself. This should not happen at this level. One of the many differences and probably the biggest one has been his intensity, or lack of. I don’t care how you slice it, he sets the tone for the program, from the assistant coaches to the players, even to the fans intensity level. This Dawg hopes the gimmicks are gone and we get down to some real old fashion, physical, won in the trenches football. I know that’s not CMR’s style and that’s what worries me.

Still@theBar 1st off we have won more games in the last decade, oh and genius we were talking about the last 10 years..you of course can’t follow the discussion well enough to see that and give numbers about the last 4 years..your really need to try and keep up..or are the jello shots getting to you? Oh and news flash kids in college drink..really its true its true ! The difference is that UGA arrests students for underage drinking not give them a ticket as is the case at most schools..by the way the 18 year drinking age is almost as big a joke as you are.. but your getting better you didn’t play the race card or defame anyones mother so that is a positive.

gatobait 17-3,
Still here calling everyone out and trying to pass himself off as classy.
Calls UGA fans delusional yet won’t admit that he has labeled Aaron Murray a midget only because he didn’t sign with florida even though Meyer wanted him BAD.
Pot meet kettle.

12-2
did Dooley have to face any of the following?
Spurrier-NO
Meyer-NO
Saban-NO
Miles-NO
Fulmer-NO
He made his hay against charlie Pell, Doug dickey, Galen Hall, Morrison at SC.
Comparing the coaches he faced to the league today is a joke.
Dooley averaged 8 wins a year and he is the best we ever had according to you?
Richt averages 10 wins a year and gets us 2 titles in a much tougher league and he is an idiot?

You are saying you are not worried about SC game?
You have been predicting over and over and over and over again that we would be 10-11 vs SEC East after that game.
Now we are going to win that game according to you?
I tell you what.
Don’t bother coming to any of the games this year, home or away.
We don’t want your fat booing, drunk a$$ sitting with us. give your ticket to a fan of the opponent. At least it is obvious where they stand.

And NO I was NOT selectively picking the years to look at, ignoring Richt last 4 years. The Boosters and Board will decide what years to compare, so it really doesn’t matter anyway. What I WAS doing was debating the idea of folks doing just that. Selectively ONLY looking at some years. Specifically, Richt worst years and comparing them to Dooley’s best years. Those best year occuring after he had 17 yrs of OJT at Georgia BTW.
Folks should hold Richt to whatever standard they please. Today is today, the stakes are higher, the rewards are higher. I don’t think even he would argue that his team are not up to the current standard lately. But it’s just factually wrong to claim the standard was set in the past. He is the one responsible for setting it where it is, and no coach in the past would have survived it.

DawginLex, I also would not want some negative overgrown Army Brat sitting next to me at a ballgame BOOING the team and cussing everything in a futile attempt to prop up his self-esteem. Just in case there was any question about how I would feel about that.

FISH and TECH has more National Championships in the last CENTURY. UGA is getting weak in the last years playing weak SEC teams.
