Richt on poll: ‘I hope we play well enough to move up. That’s the plan.’

From AJC correspondent Andy Johnston in Athens:

Georgia will begin the football season No. 23 in the Associated Press media poll, which was released this morning. It is the Bulldogs’ lowest preseason AP ranking since being unranked entering the 2001 season, coach Mark Richt’s first in Athens.

“I’m thankful we’re ranked,” Richt said after this morning’s practice. “It’s important to be ranked. I hope we play well enough to move up. That’s the plan.”

The preseason rank marks Georgia’s return to the AP poll after falling out on Oct. 4 last season. Georgia started the 2009 season No. 13 but was not ranked after the fourth week of the season.

The Bulldogs are ranked No. 21 in the USA Today coaches’ preseason poll, released earlier this month.

Georgia is among six SEC teams, the most of any conference, ranked in the AP poll. Two SEC teams are in the top four: No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Florida. Arkansas, which will play Georgia in Athens on Sept. 18, is ranked No. 17.  LSU is No. 21 and Auburn No. 22.

“Last year we were under the radar…hey that’s a great place to be. F@#$ That!!! The best place to be is where expectations are high!Get used to it, it’s always going to be that way.”
–Rex Ryan, Hard Knocks.

For UGA to become a championship program, they need to adopt a championship mentality like Rex Ryan is talking about. It’s always easy to be under the radar and knock off other teams. But you have to learn how to handle expectations, which means that you prepare for everyone’s best shot and you’re prepared to give them yours in return. Florida and Bama have been able to handle the expectations for the most part, while UGA absolutely face planted in 2008. The difference? Leadership.

I don’t care about having a team with NFL talent. You know what care about? Wins, especially wins over rival schools. And it starts with having the right mentality, the kind that says ” I don’t give a damn if you have Jesus Christ playing QB for your team! We’re going to kick the ever living dog crap out of you the next 3 hours! And if you want this win, you’ll have to crawl over our dead bodies to get it!!!” That is a championship mentality. THAT is what wins. And UGA has only had it in spurts during Richt’s tenure( parts of 2002, the later half of 2007). UGA has a great college town, great instate talent, and one of the greatest revenue generating athletic departments in the country. All the resources are there to win and win big. It’s time to demand excellence! And if Richt can no longer deliver that for us, then McGarity must move in a different direction.

Funny that AU & ARK are ranked, much less ahead of UGA. Both teams are more ‘unproven’ than UGA. Disagree?? UGA’s beaten AU four yrs in a row & ARK evertime they’ve played them since I don’t know when. AU & ARK coaches are also not proven in the SEC. Bottom line is it doesn’t matter where you’re ranked at the beginning of the season…just where you’re ranked at the end. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why would UGA get it’s swagger back from beating( as Dawgs always say) a USC team you own and an Arkiesaw team that can’t beat UGA if only the 2nd string dawgs and Russ showed up? You dawgs can’t have it both ways. Either this schedule is a JOKE( which it is) or UGA is not that good and these will all be hard games.

What happened to all the expert Georgia fans that have been saying the Gators are going to have a down year? I guess all the people who are sports writers or coach college football know nothing. The Gators are in the top 10 in every poll and in the top 5 in most.

On the other hand it appears it will be the dawgs who will have to upset a lot of teams
to finish in the top 25. To be very honest, it is more likely for the dawgs to finish 8-5
than to make it to Atlanta, much less win that game

Gatorbait 17-3 the Gators are again going to be tough too much talent not to be but will they have a “down” year I don’t think so, however there will be a learning curve they will have to overcome without Tebow, Coach Strong , and a new starting QB..plus this year you have Bama pretty early..so “down” might not be the right word..tougher is more like it.Best of luck until Jax…can’t wait for the season to kickoff!

How2fish it is great to know you actully amdit that UGA is just a mid tier team. I guess you are happy to not be Mississippi or Vandy. We know UGA is not Florida or Vandy in Education for sure.

Gatorbait 17-3

The Gators should walk away with the East this season. South Carolina is soft, UGA & Tennessee are in rebuild mode, and Kentucky & Vandy will be a non-factor. The Gators are in a very talent rich state and will continue to have great recruiting classes while FSU and Miami rebuild. With that being said, it takes 2-3 years for a great recruiting class to develop. The Florida defense in 2007 was comprised of under classmen and they took their lumps that year going 9-4. But in 2008 and 2009, those same players that got it handed to them in 2007 were the strength of the team.

I think the 2010 Gators won’t lose to any team in their division unless they are bitten by the injury bug. I think John Brantley will be utilized similar to how Meyer utilized Alex Smith at Utah, mixing the run and pass. I really don’t think the offense will drop that much and to be honest it wasn’t all that strong last season, especially after Tebow’s concussion. But I think the defense will not be as dominant as they have been the last 2 years because they are breaking in younger players like they were in 2007. I’m thinking the Gators finish 11-3 or 10-4.

LHardingDawg

August 22nd, 2010

I’m not sure about the 43 supposed students being arrested. But if it were true, 43 out of 33000 is probably not a bad ratio. I’m also sure Florida with a student population of 45000 would have more. I’m also sure that, say an Auburn, with 25000 students would probably have a few less. To even bring it up in a football blog is stupid and very unmature.

As far as the Gators, they are very much like Georgia. New coaches, new quarterback, and more than one unknown. It should be a interesting year for every team in the SEC. The games will fall as they fall and each team will adjust to the ups and downs of their individual programs.

Bulldog , we are still waiting on that answer. When was it? You remember it right?. Was it Ray Goff’s period? Lets assume not. Donnan? Where you a happy resident of Donnan”s neighborhood? Since he couldn’t beat Tech or Auburn, or UF very often and yes also lost to KY, Ol Miss, SC (2x), I assume you meant before that. So we must be talking about Coach Dooley. Is that the time you remember? Where you even around? If so, that’s the time that you compare today game and today’s other teams in the conference to? Why can’t things be like they were 20 and 30 yrs ago..really? That’s you standard for the mess Richt has us in, its not like it was 30 years ago. My goodness.

BTW coach had a losing record to AU. Did you know that. 3-5 against Bama. Lost to ole’miss about every fifth attempt. And SC. And Kentucky. Lost to tech every forth time and UF every third. Oddly was 1-2 against Arkansas. Probably “hoping” to do better in that series?

So your assessment of “that’s the neighborhood we’re living in now. Get used to it until we get a new HC.” Uh, where exactly is that old neighborhood……….the corner of Fictitious Street, and Made It Up boulevard? And by new, you mean like the one you “remember” that didn’t have any better record, or one like you couldn’t possible remember because he never existed?

How2fish UGA is 10-10 in the SEC in the last 4 years! WOW, what a great record. UGA beats 3-4 OOC teams and the week sisters of the SEC. Great that you beat 8 teams a year, but look at the 8 teams. HAHAHHAHAHHA. You can go to the Athens Clarke Sherrif’s site and se the bookings for the last 24 hours. But the ABH and the Red & Black gave the # of arrests in articles already. UGA has 33,000 but you can take out about 8,000 grad students that should be smart enough not to get a DUI. Then probably another 12,000 that are of age and can’t get the MIP charge. Athens has more bars than the Legal Age Drinking Public can support, but they stay open. How can that be? Oh, ok.

I got it.

You are comparing Coach Richt Era to Ray Goff Era.

Jim Donnan ? Funny how you list the details of his last 4 years and not the details of Coach Richt Era the last 4 years.

He lost 13 his last 4 years and we fired him for it.

Coach Richt has lost 14 his last 4 years.

Lost to Georgia tek, excuse me we LOST to a team who including their win over us won 4 games all season long – Vandie.

Oh, that doesn’t count.

We lost 3 of 4 to 4 of the lousiest vols teams of all-time.

We are 2-2 vs Kentucky.

We are # 3 Fulmer Cup the last 4 years.

We are WORSE than Florida last 4 years

We are WORSE than LSU last 4 years

We are WORSE than Bama since Nick Saban got there.

We are 3-4 at HOME vs SEC East teams the last 4 years.

And, there is not 1 team of the 7 games that we should have lost.

NOT 1.

THIS is what YOU want to talk about ?

All I said was merely the fact that we are the # 6 Ranked SEC team.

GET OVER IT.

12-2

August 23rd, 2010
3:10 am

I NEVER said we are going to be lousy this 2010 season.

It is, after all the 10th year of this regime.

A regime noted for the fact that the head coach I like has had a preference he said for NO NFL coaches because he said they are not loyal and work only for money.

IS THERE ANOTHER REASON TO WORK ?

I see we are all about altruistic goals now.

Forget that 9 years 1980 to 1988 we lost 21 games, had HIGHER win percentage, BEAT Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in Bowl Games, and oh by the way won Consensus National Championship.

Forget that 9 years 1940 to 1948 we lost 21 games also, had HIGHER win percentage, BEAT Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in Bowl Games, and oh by the way won Consensus National Championship.

We were NOT in the news daily for being the MOST Arrested / Suspended University in the United States of America, off the field.

We did not average # 96 NCAA Rank in Penalties ON THE FIELD.

We did not average 21 fumbles per year every year of the last 4 years.

We did not average 14 interceptions per year every year of the last 4 years.

We did NOT have a LOSING RECORD to 4 lousy SEC teams at HOME, none highly ranked, over the last 4 years that currently make up The SEC East.

We did NOT lose 8 games to teams NOT RANKED in the Top 25 Final AP Poll.

We did NOT lose to 17 of the 19 games against the Top 25 Final AP Poll.

We did NOT lose to 8 of the 11 games against Top 10 Final AP Poll teams.

We have a 1-year window THIS 2010 SEASON to go 12-2. THAT does NOT make us the # 2 best SEC Team. The SEC teams who will be HIGHER RANKED than Georgia, all play far better schedules, tougher schedules than we do. It’s like 2002 and 2007 when NEITHER YEAR did we beat a single great team, not 1 and we LOST games BOTH years to horrible teams, NOT Top 25 Final AP Poll RANKED teams. I believe that 2010 we should be able to go 12-2 with the best defense of the Coach Richt Era, Ray Goff Era and Jim Donnan Era and best Defense of the Vince Dooley Era once we could not dump Dooley for Erk Russell; we have as good a kicking tandem as there is in America and if we don’t play walk-ons on Special Teams, or the 5 walk-ons who got Scholarships given to them instead of recruiting a top player when God knows we are lacking talent now compared to what Jim Donnan left behind for Coach Richt, we should have better special teams since we do have guys who can return and should be able to tackle.

It’s year 10 of this regime.

We have 10 of the 11 starters back on Offense.

12-2.

Pick on me all you want but you haven’t had the guts to say compared to my 12-2 what your prediction is.

NONE OF YOU.

Then, after this season, losing 15 seniors and 4-5 juniors, we CLEARLY will see a significant drop-off from this 2010 season in 2011 and we play a far tougher schedule 2011 to this soft easy schedule this season.

YOU are the ones worried about losing to South Carolina in week 2; not I.

12-2

August 23rd, 2010
3:25 am

17-19 vs Top 25 Final AP Poll teams is not as good as Wally Butts 1940 to 1948 and not as good as Vince Dooley 1980 to 1988, not by a long shot.

We lost only 21 games both 1940-1948 nine years and 1980-1988 nine years as well, just as Coach Richt’s Lousy Coaching Staff SQUANDERED our talent in this state 2001-2009 nine years of 27 losses, 3-8 vs Top 10 Final AP Poll teams, and 8 LOSSES to 8 teams who even with their win over us were NOT Top 25 Final AP Poll teams BY DIRECT COMPARISON.

Don’t give this B.S. that Coach Richt’s 9 years are better than EITHER 1940 to 1948 nor better than 1980 to 1988.

There is NO COMPARISON on the field or off the field.

And, the vast majority of what Coach Richt has taken the flack for is OFF THE FIELD being # 1 Fulmer Cup Standings TODAY.

And, # 3 since Fulmer Cup Started after the 2005 season.

Couple his Fulmer Cup Standings for 47 arrests / suspensions since February 2007 not quite 4 years ago with his last 4 years of 10-10 vs SEC East and you have a combination of which, has him in the position where he damn well better go 12-2 this season with this schedule for after this season, he will NOT be in a position to have a 12-2 season the year after this 2010 season, in 2011.

We are NOT headed up. We have a 1 year window this season.

Coach Richt is given credit for being a nice guy.

NOT for NOT LOSING.

There are 18 teams the last 4 years whom Coach Richt does NOT have more wins than. There are only 3 states who have more high school players who go on to the NFL than the State of Georgia. UGA is the # 11 program all-time in 1-A wins. There is NO EXCUSE for Coach Richt finding TODAY 18 teams whom he does NOT have more wins than over the last 4 years. NONE. This is a different Era. You want to compare Coach Richt IN THIS ERA to these 18 teams he does NOT have more wins than over the last 4 years, once the Jim Donnan recruits all went into the NFL.

12-2
